Seabird That Soars In Air and Water Inspires New Flying/Swimming Robot

Photo via Wikipedia The common guillemot is a seabird with a smart strategy for fishing. It can fly over the water with straight wings, but when it dives into the water to catch it’s prey, it swims with bent wings. The bend in the wing reduces drag, and it is this morphing wing that has inspired researchers to come up with a robot that can both fly and swim — something brand new in the biomimicry world. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘If you touch my junk, I’ll have you arrested’ Flier becomes instant folk hero for refusing airport molestation

“I don't understand how a sexual assault can be made a condition of my flying,” said 31-year-old John Tyner to a pair of Transportation Security Administration officials insisting on giving him a “groin check” before boarding his plane. Tyner was scheduled to fly this weekend out of San Diego International Airport when he was pulled from the security line at the metal detectors and told he would be either subjected to one of the TSA's full-body scanners – which reveal a virtually nude image of passengers – or a full-body “pat-down,” including an inspection of his inner thigh. Discomforted by the invasive procedures and the thought of a security officer touching his genitals, Tyner made a joke that has since made him an instant Internet folk hero: “If you touch my junk, I'm gonna have you arrested'' Tyner's words have since resonated in dozens of online comments and thousands of views on YouTube, for the comment – and the controversial discussion that followed – was recorded by Tyner's cell phone. Though the phone was with his belongings, and thus only caught audio of his confrontation with TSA officials, the camera's footage is posted on a blog Tyner created detailing the incident and viewable below, with his “touch my junk” comment and ensuing confrontation beginning at roughly the 3:45 mark: For Tyner, however, his troubles had only begun when he threatened to have the TSA officer arrested. A female supervisor was called over to handle “issue,” and she promptly explained to Tyner that he had two choices: submit to the groin check or be escorted back out of the airport. “I don't understand how a sexual assault can be made a condition of my flying,” Tyner objected. “This is not considered a sexual assault,” the supervisor said. Tyner replied, “It would be if you weren't the government.” Sign onto the petition demanding the suspension of the privacy-invading scans and pat-downs. According to Tyner's account, he was eventually confronted by more senior TSA administrators and one San Diego police officer before being escorted back out of the security area to the ticket counter. To his amazement, American Airlines then refunded the price of his non-refundable ticket. Before he could leave the airport, however, Tyner says a TSA employees insisted that if he left the airport, he would be subject to a civil suit and a $10,000 fine. Nonetheless, Tyner left and then made his story public. His blog repeats the refrain, “I would not be groped.” Tyner also told his story to the San Diego Union-Tribune: “People generally are angry about what is going on,” said Tyner, “but they don't know how to assert their rights. … There is a general feeling that TSA is ineffective, out of control, over-reaching.” Though Tyner insists he's not trying to start a “movement,” he nonetheless told the newspaper, “It's time to stop treating passengers like criminals and start treating them as assets.” Earlier this week WND reported as dozens of other airline passengers shared their real-life horror stories of close encounters of the TSA kind, including a 70-year-old whose fudge “contraband” was discovered, a Los Angeles passenger who was “groped” four times and a man who was the target of a TSA screaming fit when he chose to opt-out of the “porno scan.” Just a day earlier, WND reported on the growing movement by activists and citizens to push back against Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano's plans for “enhanced” screening at airport checkpoints. A petition has been launched to tell President Obama, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano and members of Congress all about the problem. The petition targets the decision-makers in Washington who could bring the invasive procedures to a screeching halt. “We, the undersigned, call for the immediate suspension of the enhanced security screening procedures and an apology to the American public by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano for directing the implementation of this ill-advised program,” says the petition. Concerns over the invasion of privacy by TSA scanners, described as voyeurism by critics, along with the “molestation” of the associated “enhanced” pat-downs and the health concerns from the blasts of radiation have now reached a critical mass. As WND reported, groups have formed to organize passenger boycotts and prepare protests at airports, calling for a “National Opt-Out Day” on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The options now are to have a full-body scan that essentially produces a nude image of the passenger or opt out of that procedure and endure a full-hands-on body pat-down that includes private parts. added by: crystalman

‘The Other Guys’: Five Secrets Revealed

Find out more about the Mark Wahlberg/Will Ferrell comedy, including the reason behind its many TLC quotes. By Eric Ditzian Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell in “The Other Guys” Photo: Sony Pictures On Friday, we revealed five secrets about Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s buddy cop flick “The Other Guys,” , from the explanation for Paris Hilton’s missing cameo to how they managed to get such a curse-filled movie to be rated PG-13. We got the inside scoop from co-writer/director Adam McKay, who called up MTV News shortly before the film opened and went on to reel in $35.6 million over the weekend . McKay also let slip a bunch of other secrets that were simply too spoilery to publish on Friday (August 9). Now, as “Other Guys” enjoys its place at the top of the box office, we’re pushing forward with five more secrets revealed (of course, beware of spoilers below!) . Why Jackson and Johnson Plunged Off a Roof to Their Deaths This out-of-nowhere game-changer comes about 15 minutes into the movie: the tough-guy cops played by Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson actually die after they miscalculate a roof jump and land with a crunch on the sidewalk. McKay told us that they entertained a number of funny and unexpected deaths before settling on the failed roof jump. “The first thought we had was that they get a call for a chase, and they pull out to join it, and just get broadsided by a truck that had nothing to do with the chase,” he said. “Then we just played with the idea of a really ignominious death — autoerotic asphyxiation — but we knew there was no way we could get that into a PG-13 movie. Even though it makes me and you laugh, 80 percent of the audience would be flat-out horrified. The one we really liked — and we came close to doing it — was that they were in a shootout and they just got shot. If you have too many shootouts, you’re going to get shot. I think even the forensic guy was like, ‘They were in 90 shootouts. You’re gonna get shot eventually.’ “But the jump was just so much fun,” he continued. “Originally in the script, you didn’t see them hit the ground. But I thought, ‘You gotta shoot that.’ It could be either grisly or fantastic. Once the Foo Fighters’ song got in, we knew we had it. For a second, you think you’re watching the worst filmmaking ever. Are they really playing this song during a fake Hollywood jump? And then they die!” How They Pulled Off The Motion-Capture Bar Scene The film’s most visually stunning scene is one that even James Cameron might applaud. It’s a freeze-frame, continuous-shot bar scene in which Ferrell and Wahlberg are caught mid-action in a series of drunken incidents. The scene honestly defies easy explanation, which is why we waited until now to reveal how McKay captured it. “My DP, Oliver Wood, and I had seen this Phillips short film with cops fighting clowns ,” he explained. “We loved it, but I think that cost $4 million to shoot. At first we were going to do digital camera stills, and I just thought that was boring and we kind of did that already on ‘Talladega Nights.’ Then Oliver said, ‘I think we can do the Phillips thing,’ and in four days we came up with the plan. “We got this motion-capture camera that you program so the camera moves exactly the same every time,” he added. “It was similar to what they did in ‘The Matrix’ with the flying bullets. They weren’t wearing motion-capture suits. I wish I had thought of that. I would have made Will wear one for no reason. We just wrote joke scenarios of a night gone horribly wrong. We went to this bar on the Upper West Side [of Manhattan] and shot it in half a day. We cast stuntmen and women who could hold poses. Our special effects company, Evil Eye, added all these funny elements.” Why Keaton Quotes TLC Michael Keaton plays the NYPD precinct captain who’s always barking orders at Ferrell and Wahlberg. He also has a strange and hilarious habit of quoting TLC lyrics without seemingly having any idea who that group is. It’s a gem of a recurring bit, and it came about entirely by accident. “We were trying to write phrases for the captain that were tough-guy euphemisms,” McKay said. “We had a draft where he said all this crazy stuff and out of that I started to say, ‘Don’t go chasing waterfalls,’ and everyone started laughing. Then we called it back two more times, and then Keaton was doing them so well, we added more.” “We came up with a whole backstory that he drove his son to college and his son played a TLC greatest-hits CD the whole time but the captain was never aware what he was listening to,” he added. “We knew at least 35 percent of the audience would have no idea who TLC is, but we were like, ‘Screw it! It’s too funny!’ ” Why McKay Had Such a Weird Cameo Last week, we revealed why Paris Hilton’s cameo was left on the cutting room floor. Now we turn our attention to McKay’s cameo as a demented homeless man who is the ringleader of a roving gay orgy gang. Yes, it is all as bizarre as it sounds. “We originally had it just as a reference about all the horrible stuff that happens to [Will’s] car [after it gets stolen],” he said. “We did a table re-write and Andrew Steele, the head writer for Funny or Die, came up with this joke that the thieves left a thank you note. That made us laugh, and then we named the thieves Dirty Mike and the Boys. Then we’re like, ‘We’ve got to see them.’ I always like to do something small in our movies, so I was like, ‘All right, it’s me!’ “So we shot this riverside scene and just did thirty minutes of the filthiest improv you’ve ever heard in your life, and had to cut everything except what you see in the movie,” he continued. “But the extended DVD has all the nastiness.” A Sequel Just Might Happen After the collapse of “Anchorman 2” this spring, fans might be wondering if we’ll ever see a sequel from one of the four big-screen collaborations between McKay and Ferrell . McKay revealed that we just might see “The Other Guys 2” down the road. “We had fun shooting this and we talked about it,” he said. “There’s almost a novelty to doing a sequel at this point. The two we were talking about were ‘Step Brothers’ and ‘Other Guys.’ We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. But I would be happy to go back into this world. I never got tired of seeing Will and Mark going back and forth.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Other Guys.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video: A Cultural Cheat Sheet

Clip pays homage to Renaissance painting, M.C. Escher, ‘House Of Flying Daggers.’ By Gil Kaufman Kanye West (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Most music videos aim to overwhelm you with quick cuts, big explosions, clever editing tricks and flashy sets that look really expensive. Then there’s Kanye West’s clip for “Power.” Never one to follow trends — peep how he’s already reinvented the art of Tweeting in just a week — West’s 90-second clip is less a video and more a moving painting in which a grim-faced ‘Ye stands center stage while a galaxy of saintly and devilish female figures surround him. Director Marco Brambilla said his intention was to create a video “portrait” that would “visualize power … to do a portrait of what power would look like in a sort of timeless way.” We spent way too much time studying what feels like a trailer for a larger piece of conceptual art and broke down the imagery in the video. If it’s been a while since your last art history class, get ready to go to school: Dragonlance: An image of a sword descending into a crown hovers over Kanye’s head, bringing to mind Volume Two of Douglas Niles’ series “The Crown and the Sword: The Rise of Solamnia,” in which Sir Jaymes Markham commands the orders of the Rose, Sword and Crown. M.C. Escher’s “Waterfall”: The Dutch artist famous for making eye-popping images in which gravity and space were twisted into pretzels sketched an image in 1961 in which the water at the base of a waterfall appears to be flowing uphill against gravity before reaching the top of the fall, much as the water pours towards the sky out of two urns held by maidens in the Kanye clip. Chiaroscuro: The monochromatic clip plays with this Renaissance style of painting, in which the artist used sharp contrasts between light and dark to highlight the drama on the canvas. Often, unseen sources of light would illuminate the subjects; in the clip, Kanye appears to have an inner glow that manifests in his eyes and the sword and crown above him cast a light on the entire scene. Jean-Leon Gerome: The French painter known for his love of historical painting with Greek mythological themes created an image entitled “Head of a Woman with the Horns of a Ram,” which is not unlike the albino-like female figures sprouting long, pointy horns who frame ‘Ye. “House of Flying Daggers”: Though he’s transposed the action from China to ancient Greece, Brambilla might be paying homage to the 2004 action-romance “House of Flying Daggers” with the scene at the end of the video, in which two combatants are flying through the air in mid-sword fight as white bursts of light fill the screen. Ed Moses’ “HOLA”: This features a haunting single eye glowing behind a swirl of heavy brush marks that some have compared to the mask of a superhero. In “Power,” Kanye’s eyes have an eerie glow as he stares unblinkingly, also not unlike actor Idris Elba’s Heimdall in the upcoming movie “Thor.” Michelangelo: From the rows of Ionic columns surrounding him to the floating parade of gauzy-shift wearing Greek men and women who drift into the frame, Brambilla is clearly taking some inspiration from the classic frescoes painted by Italian Renaissance painter and architect Michelangelo. Q-Tip: The legendary rapper and member of A Tribe Called Quest released an album called The Renaissance in 2008. He said the reference to that period was more than just an album title and a sign of his unwavering commitment to keeping his art pure. Ancient Egypt: Yeezy once again rocks the unbelievably fat chain he wore at the BET Awards earlier this year. Its giant pendant is an image of Horus — the Egyptian god of the sky, war and protection. Flying Car a Step Closer to Reality

Weird-looking cars are a dime a dozen. Far less common are weird-looking cars that can also fly AND have approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. Indeed, as far as we know, there's only one of those babies: The Terrafugia Transition. The private aircraft/funky-looking car has been in the news before. But the recent announcement that it's going into production sparked mega-searches on the Web. Almost immediately, online lookups for “terrafugia transition” and “terrafugia transition pictures” both, well, took off. A popular article from the UK's Daily Telegraph explains that the FAA's special exemption allows the vehicle to function as both a “light aircraft” and a car. Normally, for a plane to meet the “light aircraft” designation, it can weigh no more than 1,200 pounds. The Terrafugia Transition weighs 1,320, due primarily to the number of car-related safety features, like airbags and crumple zones. The “light aircraft” designation is key, because licenses for planes with that label require only 20 hours of flying time. Fewer hoops to jump through means more potential sales. So, how does the plane/car work? Check out the flying car's official video below. So far, 70 people have placed a deposit. The total retail cost: $194,000. Expensive, but really, can you put a price on skipping commercial flights? Link to comments—- http://buzz.yahoo.com/buzzlog/93804?fp=1 added by: remanns
