Halle’s been talking about her ‘dream’ of playing activist Angela Davis for a while now and in her recent interview with InStyle magazine, she brought it up once again, hinting that she’d like to make a film that “explores Angela’s Communist beliefs. “Her story is so fascinating. I would love to bring it to the screen. I would pick her brain to have a better understanding of her affiliation with the Black Panthers and that period from the 1960s.” Back in early 2011, Halle spoke to Jet magazine about her eagerness to portray Davis… “I’ll probably never get to play it in my life and I am going to be sad until the day I die, but I really want to play Angela Davis badly. So badly.” “I just think she’s fascinating and I think I would love to tell a story from her perspective about that time in our history and what it was all about with the Black Panthers,”. Are they trying to imply that Black voters only vote for black candidates? Even if Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a republican, he definitely wouldn’t be a fan of all the bull going on today. According to The Huffington Post : Hovering above Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Dallas, a provocative billboard makes a controversial claim in black and red block letters: “Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican. VOTE REPUBLICAN!” It’s a claim, and a voter registration tactic, that has been used before, despite a decidedly mixed reactions from community members who see it. The ads posted this year — as well as similar billboards posted in Austin and in Houston back in 2009 — are the brainchild of Claver Kamau-Imani, a Houston, Texas, church leader and the founder of RagingElephants.org, a conservative group that aims to recruit more African Americans for the Republican Party. Kamau-Imani said the use of the American Civil Rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner is appropriate and accurate. “The use of Dr. King, because of him being an icon in the community, we feel would be most effective,” Kamau-Imani told CBS DFW. “That’s why we used it. We have the documentation to back the claims we’re making on the billboard.” This documentation is hard to pin down, however. In 2009, Kamau-Imani told Fox News that King’s niece, the Rev. Alveda King, said her uncle was indeed a Republican. But while video of Alveda King’s claim is available on YouTube, Kamau-Imani acknowledged there’s no documentation to back her up. That 2009 billboard was taken down early, after the leader of the local New Black Panther Party chapter organized a press conference rallying support against the $3,000 sign. “Martin Luther King may have very well believed in some of the Christian principles of the Republican Party, but Dr. Martin Luther King was not a Republican or a Democrat,” Quanell X told Fox News at the time. “[He] would not be with the party of Newt Gingrich, he would not be with the party of Sarah Palin, he would not be with the party of Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage or Sean Hannity.” Dr. King’s son Martin Luther King III, as well as various other friends have all objected to this label. Ultimately, Politifact said the claim was false. Back in Dallas, Peter Johnson, an activist who worked alongside King in the 1960s, told CBS that the billboards are simply offensive. “Using his image is one thing, exploiting his legacy is another,” Johnson said. “To distort his legacy, it’s sacred to some of us. We know the suffering and sacrifice that was made.” To take the sacrifice that Dr. King and so many others made is beyond disrespectful. According to the New York Post : A four-story apartment building in Chelsea suffered a partial collapse this evening, authorities said. The building, on Eighth Avenue near West 15th Street, has the front façade completely exposed following the collapse around 6:25 p.m. One firefighter suffered minor injuries, the FDNY said. A tourist from Seattle who was staying in the building said she first noticed some pieces falling from the ceiling. “It’s an old building, it creaks and things, so initially we didn’t think anything was going on,” said Natasha Stelmaszek. She then went outside to look at the building, which has a business on the first floor, and noticed a crack. “I decided to go upstairs to the fourth floor and then down to the second to let everyone known,” Stelmaszek, 56, said. “And as a group, we just figured it was time to get out.” Isabelle Boussard, who is visiting from France with her family, said after Stelmaszek alerted them to the imminent collapse, “we quickly went in and packed our luggage and we came across the street. “Ten minutes later, we watched it fall. According to The New York Post : NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor has won a lawsuit that tried to hold him accountable for sex with a 16-year-old girl in a hotel room near New York City. The jury returned its verdict Friday after hearing testimony from the now 19-year-old woman and Taylor. Taylor gave a thumbs-up to a friend in the spectator area when the verdict was announced. Outside the courthouse, the former New York Giants linebacker celebrated by lighting up a big cigar — when asked what kind it was, a triumphant LT said “Redemption!” “I feel for what she’s gone through,” Taylor told reporters. “I wasn’t a bad person. I could have helped her … I hope the best for her. Now it’s time to go back and concentrate on my own broken life.” Taylor acknowledged that he had sex in 2010 with a prostitute. He denied, however, that he ignored obvious signs she was a teen runaway in distress. The woman had claimed that an abusive pimp forced her to have sex with Taylor for $300, in an encounter that occurred in a hotel room in Montebello, just north of New York City. She sued Taylor, seeking unspecified damages. After the verdict, a juror told The Post the jury was unanimously behind Taylor, and some members wanted to find for the fallen football star in as little as five minutes. “I, and I think everyone, had an extreme amount of sympathy for [the woman],” said the juror, a female 43-year-old engineer from Westchester. “It came down to a matter of consent because they obviously had some kind of physical contact … She gave her consent by removing her clothes and allowing penetration. According to The Miami Herald : The young girl had run away from home to be with her much-older boyfriend and within a day her beau made a shocking demand, according to police: Become his prostitute or go home…The 13-year-old agreed. She worked the Biscayne Boulevard strip, giving the man half the money she earned, police said, until he threatened to kill her. Now that man, Daron Eugene Sneed, 26, is in jail and facing a slew of charges, including procuring a person under the age of 18 for prostitution. He is being held in a Miami-Dade jail without bail. A woman who worked with him — and, police said, helped train the girl to be a prostitute — also was arrested on various charges. Melquinice T. Macklin, 20, was being held in a Miami-Dade jail on $2 million bail. Both were booked into jail Thursday after a lengthy investigation. Reached by phone, Macklin’s mother, who did not give her name, said “Those are just allegations. Obviously that’s why we have the court of law.” The investigation involved Miami-Dade schools police, Miami police and the State Attorney’s Office. It was the fall of 2011. The girl was waiting for her school bus at Northwest 22nd Avenue and 183rd Street when Sneed, also known as “Killer,” went up and befriend her. They kept in touch, first through their cell phones, later meeting up in person at a playground. On Sept. 11, 2011, the girl ran away from home with Sneed. While on a bus to Biscayne Boulevard, Sneed convinced her to work as a prostitute, “telling her that, if she didn’t do it, then she would have to return home,” the affidavit said. He knew her age was 13. She performed her first act of prostitution 15 minutes after getting on Biscayne inside an abandoned home for $80. Macklin gave the girl lessons in how to be a prostitute, the affidavit said, even though the girl had been reported as a runaway. For about a week, she worked mostly out of the Kings Motel, 7150 Biscayne Blvd., giving half the money she earned to Sneed, who beat up johns who refused to pay, according to the affidavit. Macklin and Sneed supervised, using the money for food and shelter. On Sept. 17, 2011, the girl left after Sneed threatened to kill her. SMH! Immigrant Florida Voters Told They Can’t Vote Residents in 23 Florida counties report getting letters questioning their citizenship. Via Loop 21 : Residents in Florida have reported getting official-looking letters telling them that their citizenship is in question. The letters are fake, but they have gone out to predominately Republican voters where GOP officials have led efforts to keep those who are not citizens from registering to vote. The letters have been reported in 23 counties so far and Department of State spokesman Chris Cate said it looks like an attempt to intimidate voters. Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who pushed for the purge of noncitizens in the state, said Florida has “zero tolerance” for voter intimidation. “Anytime anybody’s trying to prevent somebody from voting that’s a serious issue,” Scott said. “We’ll get to the bottom of it. We’ll turn over any violations of law to law enforcement. I expect law enforcement to prosecute those individuals.” Florida’s Cubans, about half of the Latino population in the state, typically vote Republican. New Cuban immigrants also can become legal residents and US citizens simply by getting to the country because of the so-called “wet foot, dry foot” policy. This is just ridiculous! People want to keep “certain” demographics from voting this election year, only because they realize how powerful our voice is. Money Mitt kept trying to shift the conversation back to education and the high unemployment rate during the entire debate and in the end, Romney adopted Obama’s foreign policy and looked like an amateur who knew nothing about what it really takes to sit in that chair in the Oval Office! Mexico wasn’t mentioned once in tonight’s debate but China came up in regards to trade and finances. Barack didn’t hesitate to call out Romney on his shady relationship with them either when he said, “If it were up to Romney we’d be buying Chinese cars today, not selling cars to the Chinese”… According to CNN: A forceful President Barack Obama put Republican challenger Mitt Romney on the defensive on foreign policy issues on Monday night, scoring a solid victory in their third and final debate just 15 days before Election Day. Obama displayed the experience of a commander-in-chief in explaining U.S. policy under his leadership and attacking the views and proposals of Romney, a former Massachusetts governor with little experience on overseas issues. Romney applauded Obama’s efforts to kill Osama bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders but insisted that “we can’t kill our way of this mess.” Rather, he pushed for “a comprehensive strategy” to curb violent extremism in the Middle East. “The key is the pathway is to get the Muslim world to reject extremism on its own,” Romney said, proposing U.S. policies to promote economic development, better education, gender equity and to help create institutions. However, he was unable to express any significant policy difference with Obama on how that would happen. Obama responded by criticizing his opponent on a host of foreign policy issues — claiming Romney had favored positions that would have hurt the United States or offered sometimes contradictory views. “What we need to do with respect to the Middle East is strong, steady leadership — not wrong and reckless leadership that is all over the map,” the president said. Romney also repeatedly tried to shift the discussion to his strongest issue — the continued high unemployment and slow economic recovery under Obama — arguing that a strong foreign policy and national defense depends on a strong economy. The president shot back that Romney was basing his comparison on military capability on outdated models, saying America had fewer naval ships than years earlier but also has fewer bayonets. “The question is not a game of ‘Battleship’ where we’re counting ships. It’s a matter of capability,” Obama said. Romney’s economic plan seeks trillions in tax cuts while increasing defense spending, which would increase the deficit, Obama said The candidates were at odds as well about how Washington should ultimately respond to the continuing violence in Syria.
