What can a lil flirt hurt right?? If you think flirting will help you get ahead, think again. We’ve all done it. A seductive smile while negotiating a big purchase. Flirtatious banter with your cubicle neighbor or morning barista. That certain suggestive lilt that enters your voice when asking for help with a project. Those adept at the subtle art of flirting know that batting their lashes or casting a longing look can be a form of social power, sometimes useful in securing an advantage or ally. Career experts like Nicole Williams, author of “Girl on Top,” advocate using every tool available to you to gain an edge in the workplace. Although it often goes unspoken, many executives agree. “Flirting?” asked one woman. “I call it efficiency.” How can one tell the difference between two people who relate to one another having a pleasant conversation and two people intimating that they want to bump uglies? Well psychologist Simon Rego, director of the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Program at Montefiore Medical Center in New York defines it for us: “Flirting is the suggestion of the possibility, but not the probability, of something sexual occurring between two individuals,” says But sometimes flirting may have reverse effects that one may not have forseen. According to Rego, the danger arises from misreading the context and the other person’s perspective. “In a bar, it will be perceived differently than being pulled over for speeding,” he notes. But flirting with a police officer to get out of a ticket is at least worth a try, right? Not necessarily, says Rego. An officer who might have been willing to give you a break before, may be insulted by the obvious manipulation, thinking: You think I’ll bend the rules for a little bit of flirting? Suddenly, they’re more apt to put you in your place. The workplace is especially ripe for misunderstandings or harsh judgments. David Nour, author of Relationship Economics, says he frequently observes employees flirting to improve their position, be it a salesperson trying to build preference with a buyer or a professional hoping to gain priority on a project or land a promotion. Yet misreading the flirtee can result in questions about your intentions, credibility and character. At the very least, it could undermine the foundation of trust between you and your supervisor. Even worse, you may end up on the receiving end of unwanted advances, warns Nour. “Flirting at work is simply dangerous and very career limiting.” What do you think? If you haven’t heard Killer Mike’s song “Burn,” it is exactly the kind of protest song everybody always says today’s young Hip-Hop fans need to hear more often. Not some general, rebel without a cause, rage against the machine type of joint. But a song that addresses what many people have been feeling in America over the last 3-4 years. Without inciting a riot or causing a conflict, the song asks that young people think about the situations that they’re in and ask the right people the right questions to improve those situations. The video for the song, which includes clips of friends and family protesting Oscar Grant’s death, as well as cameon appearances by several artists including Diddy, is just as poignant. And purposely so. “I wrote this song and presented this visual to validate the anger of the working and middle class in my country today,” Mike told BOSSIP. “It is my sincere hope that Americans, no matter their race, creed or color, will see this video as I intended: as a scream of truth too powerful institutions, corporate and government, that we are suffering and deserve better.” But for some reason, BET has made the decision to ban the song’s video… even though it’s premium cable sister station MTV Jams has had “Burn” in rotation for almost a week now. African-American unemployment is real, and the Congressional Black Caucus is not feelin the way Barry-O is handling the situation: Members of the Congressional Black Caucus on Thursday publicly accused the Obama administration of failing to adequately address a veritable epidemic of African American unemployment. “Can you imagine a situation where any other group of workers, if 34 percent of white women were out there looking for work and couldn’t find it?” asked Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat and chairman of the caucus. “You would see congressional hearings and community gatherings. There would be rallies and protest marches. There is no way that this would be allowed to stand.” In May, the black unemployment rate was at 16.2 percent compared to 9.1 percent overall joblessness and 8 percent levels among white workers. In Milwaukee, Wis., a staggering 34 percent of black men are unemployed, CBS news reported. The Obama administration has focused on broad-based initiatives aimed at lowering unemployment in general, while declining to address elevated rates among minority groups. The administration unleashed an $800 billion package of spending measures aimed at stimulating economic growth, while extending unemployment benefits and increasing funding for community health centers. These programs are also sure to help black and Latino Americans hard hit by the recession, Obama said at a White House press conference in April. Debate about the ability of a universal job creation strategy to address persistent and disproportionate African American unemployment occupied a significant portion of Thursday’s gathering. So too did concerns about the political feasibility of any sort of effort to target black joblessness, the public’s appetite for programs that may look and sound like affirmative action and common assumptions about why so many black people do not have jobs. Black Americans make up about 12 percent of the nation’s population, but about 20 percent of the unemployed. “This is an American crisis that demands an American response at the highest echelons of our government,” said Michael Eric Dyson, a writer, Georgetown University professor and frequent social and political commentator on television and radio programs aimed at a black audiences. “And that does include the White House.” Discuss… Source
