Young Jeezy Explains Why He Picked Plies And Yo Gotti For New LP

‘You heard of them, but you don’t know them,’ he tells MTV News of working with the lesser-known MCs. By Jayson Rodriguez Young Jeezy Photo: MTV News Young Jeezy might rock microphones alongside Jay-Z, but the Georgia rapper isn’t ready to be exactly like Brooklyn icon just yet. The Def Jam star featured a pair of less-heralded acts in Plies (“Lose My Mind”) and Yo Gotti (“All White Everything”) for two of the first three singles from his forthcoming Thug Motivation 103. The Snowman said he tapped the Southern artists not only to put the spotlight on both of them, but also to show his new fans — who might not be familiar with his mixtape work — where he comes from. “Me and Gotti kind of came up at the same time,” Jeezy told MTV News. “But I respected his grind just as well as he respected mine. Same thing with Plies. We kind of cover the same routes with what we do. Of course I’ve sold records in other places, but I don’t ever want to forget. ‘Cause I was always that cat trying to get to the next level, and no one held their hand out. I had to grind my way up. So I feel like the big homie, like, ‘Come on, y’all, let me show you over here.’ Just as well as showing the people over here who don’t understand why I act the way I act, this is what I come from. And look who I’m bringing with me? You heard of them, but you don’t know them. We know them.” Young Jeezy’s Thug Motivation 103 is set for a September 28 release. In addition to the two aforementioned singles, Jeezy has also released the Lil Jon collaboration “Jizzle.” He also recently put out a mixtape, 1,000 Grams, Vol. 1, which featured the track “Death B4 Dishonor,” a song seemingly directed at Rick Ross. Jeezy, however, denied the charge, saying the record is “not a dis.” What do you think of Jeezy’s latest collaborators? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Young Jeezy Plies Yo Gotti

Lady Gaga Says Her New Album Is ‘Utter Liberation’

Pop star tells i-D magazine she wants to ‘create the anthem for my generation.’ By James Dinh Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images Lady Gaga may have caused a stir with her recent talk of sex and drug use, but the singer knows that in the end it all boils down to the music. In the pre-Fall issue of i-D magazine that surfaced online on Friday (August 13), the songstress opens up about what she has planned for her upcoming album. “The new album is my absolute greatest work I’ve ever done, and I’m so excited about it,” Gaga said of her still-untitled album. “The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it’s utter liberation. I’m on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that’s what I’ve done.” While the singer has frequently worked with producers like RedOne (“Bad Romance” and “Just Dance”), Gaga plans to keep her sound fresh with a line of new producers on the forthcoming project. But she’s keeping them a secret, saying, “I will never tell because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them. So all I can say is that nobody knows who they are. They’re all new.” And for those who were wondering if the Elton John-esque ballad “You and I” was an indication of the project’s sound, Gaga said, “It’s not totally indicative of the new album sound; it’s just a really big rock-and-roll hit.” The pop star confirmed that the song, which she first performed at Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball in June, will appear on the LP. “I do have these hopes that it could be a great rock crossover record, so I’m going to put my producer’s hat on and get it to a place where I feel like it could reach the masses,” she said. “It’s a beautiful, beautiful lyric and melody. I wrote it at the piano I grew up playing in New York.” Despite the success of Gaga’s collaborations with Beyonc

Yet-untitled LP is coming ‘sometime in November,’ and next single will be ‘Lost in the World’ or ‘All of the Lights.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Getty Images A mere 140 characters can’t contain Kanye West . The Twitter newcomer took to another digital medium Friday afternoon (August 6) when he broadcast his first Ustream session from Korea, during which he spoke from a hotel balcony as the sun rose behind him. “I’m bout to get on to answer questions and chip away at my mystique one humanizing question at a time,” he tweeted before going live. West was particularly open during the 25-minute chat, revealing tentative dates for the release of his forthcoming album (“sometime in November,” he said) and the follow-up single to “Power” (either “Lost in the World” or “All of the Lights,” which he said could arrive in 20 days). The Chicago MC was killing time until he had to depart for the airport. He was upbeat throughout the chat and displayed his wacky humor, especially when he alerted his viewers that his outfit was the same one he wore in his “Flashing Lights” clip. He also touched on his latest video, the brief 90-second clip for “Power.” West said his initial plans were to create a 30- to 40-minute mini-film. But once the song leaked, he had to move fast on a new treatment. “We vibed out in my house, and I had all these references of Renaissance paintings,” he told his followers. “I always wanted to re-create the Sistine Chapel. This is not the full re-creation [though]. I still might want to do that.” What do think about Kanye West’s social-media conquests? Let us know in the comments! Taylor Swift’s New Single ‘Mine’ Hits Internet

Lead single from singer’s upcoming Speak Now leaked on Wednesday. By James Dinh Taylor Swift Photo: Charles Eshelman/ WireImage If there’s anyone who knows how to sing a song with a spark of teenage love and a happy ending, it’s Taylor Swift. On Wednesday (August 4), the pop star’s “Mine,” the lead single from her forthcoming album, Speak Now, leaked onto the Internet. On the new song, Swift sings about what it feels like to find a guy who’s an exception to the rest. “Mine” is all about the wonders of being in a happy relationship after surviving a rocky past. Without straying too far from typical Swift subject matter, the song features an uplifting country/pop melody and a big chorus. “Do you remember we were sitting there by the water?/ You put your arm around me for the first time/ You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter/ You are the best thing that’s ever been mine,” Swift belts on the sing-along chorus. And while Swift embraces her emotions, her take on relationships proves more realistic than some of her earlier material. “And I remember that fight, 2:30 a.m./ You said everything was slipping right out of our hands/ I ran out crying and you followed me out into the street/ Brace myself for the goodbye/ Because it’s all I’ve ever known/ And you took me by surprise/ You said, ‘I’ll never leave you alone,’ ” she sings on the song’s bridge. Last month, Swift described “Mine” as a reflection of her own love-life habits, revealing that she’s “developed this pattern of running away” when relationships turn to love and get serious. “The song is sort of about finding the exception to that and finding someone who would make you believe in love and realize that it could work out, because I’m never ever going to go past hoping that love works out,” she told fans during a live Ustream chat. Swift recently taped a performance of “Mine” for an upcoming special titled “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock,” which will air September 1 on ABC. The video for the song was shot in early July and features British actor Toby Hemingway. Locals on the set reported spotting Swift shooting scenes on a lake and walking outside of a church. Christopher Nolan Finds Meaning In ‘Superman’ Adaptation

‘Whether you’re doing a ‘Batman’ or ‘Superman’ film, it’s all about story first,’ ‘Inception’ director says. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Christopher Nolan Photo: MTV News Of the many accomplishments that director Christopher Nolan achieved with “Batman Begins” in 2005, one of the greatest involved his ability to craft a compelling comic book adaptation while maintaining a surprising level of realism. Nolan’s down-to-earth, non-superhero approach to the Batman mythos owed much thanks to the character’s lack of superpowers — but when he puts his stamp on Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s forthcoming “Superman” reboot, he’ll likely have to try a different approach with the invulnerable Man of Steel. As the producer of the upcoming “Superman” film, Nolan is already hard at work on the story alongside his “Dark Knight” collaborators Jonah Nolan and David S. Goyer, but the project remains so early in development that casting hasn’t even been considered yet. “I haven’t even thought about it, to be honest,” Nolan told MTV News during a recent press junket for “Inception,” his forthcoming thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio. “All of these things, whether you’re doing a ‘Batman’ or ‘Superman’ film, it’s all about story first. It’s all about figuring out exactly the tone and the meaning of the story and how you’re going to approach it. Casting comes later. All of those considerations come later.” Even if casting isn’t an immediate concern, Nolan already has plenty of history to look toward as he and his collaborators find the story for “Superman.” For Nolan himself, the filmmaker considers director Richard Donner’s first adaptation in 1978 as something to aspire to. “I was hugely struck by the Donner films in the ’70s when I was a kid,” he said. “In 1978, I saw [“Superman”] and it had such epic scope to it. It took on this incredible, iconic figure and gave that iconic figure an appropriate framing. It made quite an impression on me. It’s definitely one of my childhood touchstones of what epic cinema can be.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Inception.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Jeff Beck Soars At Intimate Les Paul Tribute Concert, By Kurt Loder

Legendary guitarist gets small at New York’s Iridium club. By Kurt Loder Jeff Beck performs in New York on Wednesday Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images NEW YORK — How rare an event was the small-club show Jeff Beck played here on Wednesday night? Well, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett flew in from his home in Hawaii to catch it. And he wasn’t the only weighty player in attendance. Also crowding into the packed-out Iridium, a Broadway jazz club, were E Street Band (and “Sopranos”) veteran Steven Van Zandt; onetime Stray Cat Brian Setzer; psychedelic-blues virtuoso Warren Haynes, of Gov’t Mule; and such notable Beck buddies as Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer. They were all on hand to catch the great guitarist in an uncommon context. Beck’s fiery, soaring style — which has been unendingly influential ever since he emerged as Eric Clapton’s replacement in the Yardbirds in 1965 — makes glorious use of maximum volume. However, his two Iridium dates (the first one, the night before, had drawn such admirers as David Bowie) were a birthday tribute to Beck’s late friend, the innovative guitarist Les Paul, whose own style was clean, sharp and jazzy. In saluting Paul — who maintained a weekly Iridium gig virtually up to the time of his death last year , at the age of 94 — Beck would necessarily be turning down the volume a bit; and since Paul had a strong country side, too, his English acolyte would also be showcasing his rockabilly chops. Beck was joined for these dates by Irish singer Imelda May and her tight three-piece band. May is a belter with range — she’s up for taking on early Elvis and even Howlin’ Wolf, and she held her own as Beck called forth the ghosts of such rockabilly guitar masters as Cliff Gallup and Paul Burlison (on a stomping rendition of “Train Kept A-Rollin’,” a tune Beck covered with the Yardbirds). But May also shifted down to a smoky purr for Julie London’s late-night lounge standard, “Cry Me a River” (with Beck flawlessly replicating Barney Kessel’s original plaintive chord patterns); and her takes on such vintage Les Paul recordings as “How High the Moon” and “Bye Bye Blues,” whipped along by Beck’s heavily echoed riffing, were pure, jumping ’50s pop. Paul invented the solid-body Gibson guitar that bears his name, and Beck has played one at various times throughout his career. But he’s most closely associated with the Fender Stratocaster, which has a throatier, more sinuous tone. So when he strapped one on midway through the show (possibly to the dismay of Gibson Guitar execs in the audience), the music grew noticeably more muscular. Bringing on a four-piece horn section, he unleashed the deathless crunch of “The Peter Gunn Theme,” and then — out of nowhere — launched into a rendition of the Shangri-Las’ girl-group classic, “Remember (Walkin’ in the Sand),” that might have actually raised the roof if the club weren’t located in a basement. The show peaked when Beck invited Brian Setzer out onstage (“the only guy in the room who could give him competition,” Van Zandt whispered) with his trademark Gretsch guitar. Their extended, dueling-riffs run-through of Eddie Cochran’s “Twenty Flight Rock” was the sort of thing guitar fans might expect to hear only in heaven. The crowd was still buzzing at an upstairs party following the show. Most people have a favorite Beck phase: the Yardbirds stuff, of course, or maybe the mid-’70s jazz-fusion period of Blow by Blow and Wired. For Kirk Hammett, the Jeff Beck Group’s 1968 blues-rock touchstone, Truth, was a major album. “One of the very first guitar solos I ever heard was the one on ‘Let Me Love You,’ ” Hammett said. “I flew in from Hawaii, but he flew in from some other universe.” Related Artists Jeff Beck Les Paul

New ‘Bourne’ Movie Planned As Sequel, Not Prequel

Matt Damon’s participation in the fourth “Bourne” film is unclear. By Eric Ditzian Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in “The Bourne Ultimatum” Photo: Jasin Boland/ Universal Studios Call it the Bourne Determination. Despite the participation of star Matt Damon and two-time franchise director Paul Greengrass being in doubt, Universal is pushing forward with plans for a fourth “Bourne” movie, tentatively called “The Bourne Legacy.” And word is that, in contrast to earlier rumors that the new flick would be a reboot or a prequel, “Legacy” will be a straight sequel. According to reports from Variety and Deadline.com , Universal has hired Tony Gilroy to write the script. Gilroy wrote the first three movies and has also been tapped to write a franchise bible, lending credence to the idea that the fourth film is only the beginning of Universal’s big-screen plans for the “Bourne” universe. “Legacy” — which will not be based on “The Bourne Legacy,” an Eric Lustabader-penned novel in the Robert Ludlum series — is looking at a 2012 release date. The news that the forthcoming “Bourne” film will be a sequel comes as something of a surprise. Earlier this year, Damon said the next installment would likely be a prequel . But whether or not Damon and Greengrass will take part in the fourth film is an open question. Back in February, Damon said he wouldn’t reprise the role without Greengrass, who bowed out of his directing duties last fall. Yet both men left the door open to returning to the franchise down the line. “We see a very clear way that they could go [with the story] that wouldn’t interfere with the series that we have and that might give it a chance to have a life right now and if we come back and did another one, even after that without us,” . That “very clear way” seemingly involved rebooting the franchise with another actor taking Bourne’s identity, or name given to a uniquely positioned government operative. Such a storytelling technique would easily allow Damon and Greengrass to reenter the fold in the future. But with Gilroy back in charge of storytelling duties, there’s always the chance that Damon and Greengrass can be enticed to return. As the director himself , he maintains a good relationship with the studio and he plans to work with Damon again. “I’m going to continue to make movies for Universal,” Greengrass told us in March. “I’m going to continue to make movies with Matt hopefully. They’ll undoubtedly continue to make ‘Bourne’ movies. So it’s all good news.”

Eminem Admits Being Jealous Of Lil Wayne, Kanye West On ‘Talkin’ 2 Myself’

‘I almost made a song dissing Lil Wayne,’ he raps on the Recovery track. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil’ Wayne and Eminem performs onstage during the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Eminem dived into the depths of his drug dependency for his last album, Recovery, and on his forthcoming Recovery, he continues to speak on some of the low points in his life. On the track “Talkin’ 2 Myself,” the Detroit MC admits being jealous of Lil Wayne’s and Kanye West’s rising prominence. “I went away, I guess, and opened up some lanes,” Em raps on the DJ Khalil-produced number. “But there was no one who even knew I was going through growing pains/ Hate was flowing through my veins/ On the verge of going insane/ I almost made a song dissing Lil Wayne.” In the song, Em later claims that the attention Wayne and Kanye were receiving while he was away prompted the intended attack. But he backed away when he realized he wouldn’t have been much of an opponent, in his condition. “I would have had my ass handed to me” he spits, acknowledging his respect for their craft. Upstart singer Kobe is featured on “Talkin’ 2 Myself.” He’s one of the few guests on Recovery, in addition to Lil Wayne, Pink and Rihanna. For the set, though, Eminem reached out to a slew of producers he never worked with before, including Just Blaze, Havoc, Boi-1da and Khalil. Recovery is slated for a June 22 release, however the project leaked to the Web on Tuesday (June 8). In the past, the rapper’s recording home, Interscope Records, has shifted the album release forward to compensate for such leaks. As of press time, the label had yet to indicate whether the release date for Recovery would be moved up. Are you surprised that Eminem nearly went after Lil Wayne and Kanye West?
