Flag Day vs. Bourbon Day: Which Would You Rather …

Today, Friday the 14th of June, is Lucy Hale and Donald Trump’s birthday . It also happens to be Flag Day and Bourbon Day, too. U-S-A! U-S-A! Often overlooked, Flag Day is kind of like the awkward little brother of July 4, but regardless, today marks the anniversary of Old Glory itself! On this date in 1775, the Continental Congress adopted a rag-tag band of men and boys who had started shooting at the British. The U.S. Army was born. Exactly two years later, on June 14, 1777, the Stars and Stripes debuted! The design of the flag is recognized as a symbol of the people: the red and white stripes represent the original 13 colonies, with a star for each new state. Initially, there were only 13 stars as well, but that quickly changed. Fundamentally then, and continuing to this day, the flag represents the unity of the people from every corner of the U.S. in their genuine desire for freedom. As for Bourbon Day, that commemoration is slightly newer. It’s not just because people enjoy drinking the smooth, Southern-bred product, nor totally out of place alongside Flag Day as a national event, however. More than any other spirit, bourbon is an all-American drink. Congress itself staked national claim to it in 1964 as a “distinctive product of the United States.” In recent years, the market for bourbon has surged (thank you Mad Men ) with the popularity of both single-barrel and small batch bourbon rising. So, let’s raise a glass (and a flag) to both of these occasions! And tell us: Which of the two would you rather … celebrate?   Flag Day! Bourbon Day! View Poll »

Miley Cyrus: I’m Not the White Nicki Minaj!

Miley Cyrus definitely dresses a little bit differently these days. But the young singer says folks have gotten the wrong impression from her makeover, telling the latest issue of Billboard : “A lot of people wanted to try to make me the white Nicki Minaj. That’s not what I’m trying to do. I love ‘hood’ music, but my talent is as a singer.” And the Twerking aficionado also drives home a point in the interview that she’s been making for years: don’t even attempt to tame her! “I can’t really be told what to do right now,” Miley says. “I’m too young to go in and make someone else’s vision come to life. I want to go make my visions. Cyrus has made news over the past few months for partying and dancing and smoking and flirting with Justin Bieber … but she doesn’t want anyone to think her personal life comes at the expense her professional life. “I never stop working, ever,” she says. “I want my record to be the biggest record in the world, and I’ve given everything to get here, even down to friends and family and relationships – I’ve just put this music first.” The album will be released later this year and Miley teased that it may surprise some long-time fans: “I’ve always wanted country-rock influences, but now I’m moving over to a more urban side. It’s not a hip-hop album, though – it’s a pop album. I’m not coming in trying to rap. It’s more like, ‘I don’t see any girls out there doing what Miguel and Frank Ocean are doing.'” For even more from Miley,’ pick up the latest issue of Billboard. It goes on sale Monday, June 17.

Chris Brown Death Threats Prompt LAPD Investigation

New death threats made against Chris Brown have prompted Los Angeles Police Department officials to open an investigation, according to reports. Multiple death threats were called in to the office of Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, took them seriously enough to contact the LAPD about this. The caller(s) threatened Chris’ life. It’s unclear how specifically. Geragos turned over all the information he had on the calls. He filled out a report and the LAPD is on the case, but there are no suspects at this time. It’s unclear who would want to kill Chris Brown, though Ricky Romance and Raz B once threatened to, and there is the whole house graffiti situation. Then there’s the list of people who may have a bone to pick with him. Jenny Johnson, Miranda Lambert, Drake, Meek Mill, Frank Ocean, that valet at the bowling alley, Rihanna, Karrueche … we could go on and on. We’re just kidding. Mostly. Who do you think is behind it?

Frank Ocean – “Eyes Like Sky” [Listen]

Frank Ocean is already almost a dozen songs deep into his next album, but here we have an older tune that’s new to most of our ears. “Eyes Like Sky” was probably meant for Ocean’s debut, channel ORANGE, and didn’t make the cut, but not for a lack of quality…. Continue
