For several weeks now, the strange saga of Jussie Smollett has dominated headlines and heated social media discussions. In case you somehow missed the story, here’s a brief recap: Smollett claimed that he was attacked by two white men while walking home from a Subway restaurant around 2 am. Despite frigid, polar vortex weather, Smollett stated that the two men had staked him out and recognized him from his role on TV’s Empire . He added that they came equipped with a bottle of bleach that they dumped over his head and a length of clothesline that they wrapped around his neck in an act mock lynching. Smollett claimed that the men used several racist and homophobic slurs and screamed at him, “This is MAGA country!” Many found the actor’s version of events suspicious from the start, but Smollett quickly gained the support of numerous celebrities and politicians, including presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Cory Booker. Over the course of the past week, however, Smollett’s story began to unravel. Currently, Chicago police are investigating the possibility that Smollett staged the attack with the help of two Nigerian who briefly worked as extras on Empire. His case is set to go before a grand jury as early this week. If convicted of a felony for filing a false police report, Smollett faces several years behind bars. So it should come as no surprise that he’s lawyering up — or that he’s reportedly hired one of the most famous defense attorneys in the country. According to TMZ, Smollett has hired Mark Geragos to represent him in court. Neither Smollett nor Geragos has officially announced that decision, but the attorney has spoken out on Jussie’s behalf on several occasions, most recently on Anderson Cooper’s CNN show: “Any time you start to get law enforcement drip, drip, drip leaks that, to me, is a telltale sign that something else is going on,” Geragos told the host. Geragos went on to express his doubts that it would have been possible for police to track down Smollett’s alleged co-conspirators via the “grainy footage” that was presented to them. He credits Smollett’s cooperation with the arrest of the brothers, and states — in somewhat contradictory fashion — that they were only taken into custody due to public “pressure” to make an arrest. “I haven’t seen anything but leaks from law enforcement sources,” Geragos added. “To me, that screams out that someone is trying to manipulate something.” No doubt by this time, many on both sides of the aisle would prefer for this ugly story to disappear from the headlines. But as Geragos and Smollett gear up for an epic legal battle, we’re reminded that this saga is just getting started. View Slideshow: Jussie Smollett: Did He REALLY Stage His Own Attack?! All it took was one night with Lady Gaga to drive David Letterman away. We kid, but the day after Gaga sang for the first time on The Late Show, Letterman announced his retirement as a talk show host. The comedian told his studio audience at today’s taping of his decision, with REM bassist Mike Mills Tweeting the news and various outlets subsequently confirming that Letterman will recite his final Top 10 List some time next year. David Letterman Retirement Announcement Letterman got his big break by performing stand-up many times on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He was then given NBC’s Late Night in 1982. In 1993, Letterman moved to CBS and became the host of The Late Show. His contract is set to expire in 2015 and he said at this afternoon’s taping that he’ll step away “sometime in the not too distant future.” That’s when “Paul and I will be wrapping things up.” In February, of course, Jay Leno stepped down from The Tonight Show and Jimmy Fallon has been killing it in the ratings ever since. Expect speculation to soon begin over who will take over for Letterman, but let’s stop before that gets out of control and admire one of the funniest men to ever grace a television screen. As previously reported, Chris Brown has been picked up by U.S. marshals for his cross-country journey to stand trial for assault charges in Washington, D.C. The 24-year-old star is on his way from jail in L.A. to a federal holding facility in San Bernardino, Calif., to begin his long trip to our nation’s capital. Later, escorted by U.S. Marshals and appropriately restrained, he will get on a plane to D.C. Only there will be layovers along the way. A LOT of them. According to TMZ, there are so many stops en route (think Oklahoma and other out of the way places ) to pick up other prisoners, it’ll take days. He will be there by Monday, however, when his lawyer, Mark Geragos, will try to get the assault charges dismissed against Chris, and he stands a chance. The evidence is flimsy as is, and Geragos believes prosecutors inappropriately used the grand jury to gain an unfair advantage in the criminal case. If that motion is denied, though, Chris will sit in a D.C. jail until his trial kicks off on April 17, at which point Geragos must proceed with his actual defense. At least he has Karrueche to leave voicemails for … Karrueche Plays Message From Chris Brown The confusing legal background, if you care: Chris is on probation for beating the crap out of Rihanna back in 2009. His probation requires him to obey laws. Clearly a major issue for him. His probation was revoked following his 2013 arrest for assault in D.C. He could’ve been jailed then, but a judge allowed him to go to rehab. He got kicked out of rehab , TWICE, and is therefore in solitary now. The judge won’t even let him out to go to D.C. Hence the Marshals. If convicted in the D.C. case, Brown could go to PRISON. Gulp .
New death threats made against Chris Brown have prompted Los Angeles Police Department officials to open an investigation, according to reports. Multiple death threats were called in to the office of Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, took them seriously enough to contact the LAPD about this. The caller(s) threatened Chris’ life. It’s unclear how specifically. Geragos turned over all the information he had on the calls. He filled out a report and the LAPD is on the case, but there are no suspects at this time. It’s unclear who would want to kill Chris Brown, though Ricky Romance and Raz B once threatened to, and there is the whole house graffiti situation. Then there’s the list of people who may have a bone to pick with him. Jenny Johnson, Miranda Lambert, Drake, Meek Mill, Frank Ocean, that valet at the bowling alley, Rihanna, Karrueche … we could go on and on. We’re just kidding. Mostly. Who do you think is behind it?
If it ain’t one thing, it’s muhfuggin’ other… Chris Brown Twitter Rants About Neighbor’s Street Art Complaints Via AP Chris Brown’s attorney is slamming neighbors who are demanding the star remove street art-style murals from his Hollywood Hills home. Neighbors claim the monsters are scaring neighborhood kids and ruining the hillside aesthetic of the area below Lake Hollywood. “There are lots of babies, lots of children, and they’re literally frightened. It’s like devils on the wall — big scary eyes and big scary teeth, and just the whole vibe is not what we’re used to,” said Patti Negri, president of the Hollywood Dell Civic Assn. The above was Chris’ twitter response to Patti’s comment. Responding to complaints about the monster art, L.A. city code officials cited Brown for unpermitted and excessive signage and ordered him to remove the art within 30 days. He also faces fines that start at $376 but could rise significantly if he fails to comply. Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, said the musician is not backing down. He says it’s the neighbors who are harassing Brown. “I’m scared of neighborhood busybodies like this,” Geragos said. “They’ve called animal control. They have sicced parking [enforcement] on him, and now they reached the heights of ridiculousness here. Shame on them.” Geragos said the city can expect a legal fight over Brown’s personal artwork, which unwittingly thrust him into one of L.A.’s longest-running civic debates. Although the city has a reputation for being the street mural capital of the world, much of that artwork has been done illicitly. City ordinances make it illegal to create murals on the vast majority of private properties. “They are trying to suspend the 1st Amendment,” Geragos said. In another moment of open rebellion Chris stated: In their best Rihanna accent we’re sure Chris’ neighbors are probably thinking: “Phuck yo’ artwork!!!” Image via LATimes/Twitter
