Talk that Cumberbatch is playing the new ‘Trek’ villain is ‘just supposition,’ the actor said at the 2012 Golden Globes. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Benedict Cumberbatch Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Ever since British actor Benedict Cumberbatch was announced as part of the cast of “Star Trek 2,” fans have been arguing back and forth over who the “Sherlock” star might be playing in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel. Lots of speculation has centered on whether he’d be playing a familiar villain in “Trek” lore — like Khan Noonien Singh, the most popular theory to date — or an entirely new bad guy. But perhaps we’ve all been barking up the wrong tree (or beaming aboard the wrong ship, as it were) as Cumberbatch teased to MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday night (January 15) that he might not be playing an antagonist at all. “I don’t think we do know that, actually,” Cumberbatch told MTV’s Josh Horowitz when asked if his “Star Trek” role is a villainous one. “That’s just supposition. And that’s all I’m going to say about it.” Perhaps some clues can be found in the fact that Cumberbatch has been preparing for his role by consulting friends and family members better versed in the “Star Trek” universe than he is. “I started [becoming a ‘Star Trek’ fan] slowly, but quite genuinely, when he rebooted it with this last film,” the actor said of his own “Trek” familiarity. “I have lots of friends and family, all sorts of people who’ve loved all of the series and all of the films. I’ve been introduced to it through them and now I’m going back to them and asking them questions so I can get up to speed with true Trekkies.” Though the character’s identity remains concealed, whomever Cumberbatch is playing requires no small amount of physical preparation. The actor said he’s been “working out nonstop,” indicating that his part in “Star Trek 2” is a very physical one. But even if preparation has been somewhat grueling, the actor insists that he’s having a blast getting ready for the role. “[Abrams has] great ideas. It’s been great fun to prep,” Cumberbatch said. “I start [shooting] next week, which is really exciting, and I can’t say any more than that.” Stick with MTV News all night for the 2012 Golden Globes winners , and don’t miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet ! Jon Bernthal tells MTV News the relationship between Shane, Rick and Lori ‘gets more dangerous and more complicated’ as season progresses. By Josh Wigler Jon Bernthal Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Secrets are no fun — unless you’re talking about “The Walking Dead.” In that case, secrets make for very, very fun television. Take Sunday night’s episode, for instance: Appropriately titled “Secrets,” the latest round of “Walking Dead” madness zeroed in on the walkers hidden away in Herschel’s barn, unbeknownst to anybody in Rick Grimes’ group of survivors, save for Glenn and Dale. That story looks likely to boil over in next week’s ominously titled mid-season finale, “Pretty Much Dead Already,” while this week’s outing pushed another tenuous thread closer to its breaking point: Lori’s pregnancy and her infidelity with Shane. Rick learned both of his wife’s biggest secrets in the episode, and he took the news surprisingly well. But one has to wonder how Shane is going to react when he learns that Lori is pregnant and determines that he could very well be the baby’s father. Speaking with MTV News earlier this year, Jon Bernthal chimed in on his character’s increasingly fragile mental and emotional stability, indicating that something like Lori’s recent revelation will have a profound impact on Shane. “He’s lonely,” Bernthal said. “He’s not suffering from the kind of loneliness you suffer from when you’re far away from the people you love; it’s the loneliness you feel when you’re right there with them and you can’t be with them in the way you want.” Bernthal said he doesn’t view the situation between Shane, Rick and Lori as a love triangle. Instead, he sees the characters as members of “a family that’s been fractured and cut open by the circumstances.” “The people that Shane loved more than anyone else in the world before the apocalypse are still very much alive and still very much with him, but he’ll never be with them in the way he wants to and the way he once was,” he explained. “Every relationship — Shane/Carl, Shane/Lori and Shane/Rick — it’s tainted and fractured. When you suffer from that kind of loneliness, it brings out the worst in you.” We’ve already seen the darkness in Shane — you could ask Otis all about it, if he were still alive — but is the worst yet to come? Bernthal said that, yes, this kind of loneliness can bring out “the best” in a man, but for Shane, the rollercoaster ride isn’t ending anytime soon. “I really applaud the writers by making this. … There’s nothing tired about the relationship,” he said. “It gets more and more dangerous and more and more complicated as the season progresses. They’ve given me wonderful stuff to play.” How do you think Shane will react to Lori’s pregnancy? Sound off in the comments!
After weeks of online protests from Lions fans, there’s official word the band has been booked to play. By James Montgomery Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger Photo: Getty Images Well, now it’s official. Two weeks after an irate Detroit Lions fan launched an online petition asking the team to remove Nickelback as the halftime performers for their annual Thanksgiving game, there is finally confirmation from the United Way — sponsors of said halftime show — that the Canadian quartet will be performing at the game. “Nickelback will take the stage for the 2011 United Way Thanksgiving Halftime Show during the first game of the NFL’s tripleheader when the Detroit Lions host the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, November 24, at 12:30 pm ET,” the United Way said in a press release. “The game and halftime show will be broadcast live on Fox.” It marks the first actual confirmation that Nickelback will be performing at the game. On November 1, The Oakland Press reported that the band had been booked — a story that led to the creation of that online petition claiming there are better choices for the gig — but neither the NFL nor the Detroit Lions commented on the matter (a spokesperson for the league did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment last week, and a rep for the Lions had no comment when reached). There is no mention of the online outrage in the United Way press release — though they do announce that “American Idol” season 10 runner-up Lauren Alaina will be singing the National Anthem before the Lions/Packers tilt — but there is a quote from Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, who thanked his fans in Detroit for their continued support of the band (petitions notwithstanding). “We are honored to perform at the United Way halftime show on Thanksgiving Day,” Kroeger said. “We always love playing in Detroit, our fans there have been tremendously supportive of us through the years and we can’t wait to come back and celebrate an exciting day for the Lions and the city of Detroit.” Related Artists Nickelback
‘You can kind of say anything,’ he laughs to MTV News at L.A. premiere. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images It ain’t cool to show up early to your own party. Robert Pattinson took his time Monday night (November 14) arriving at the RPattz Super Terrific Happy Hour — otherwise known as the black-carpet premiere of “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” The wolf pack and the Forks students had come and gone. Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz and Peter Facinelli were likely settled into their seats, popcorn in hand. Little Mackenzie Foy had already bounded inside. But the party didn’t truly begin until around 6:30 p.m. PT, when Pattinson sauntered onto the scene and the assembled crowd — including the hordes that had been camped out in Tent City for days — erupted into screams so high-pitched you’d have thought they’d been bitten by a vampire. Perhaps they had. And they couldn’t get enough. By the time Rob made his way to MTV News’ live-stream platform, he couldn’t quite believe real life had not in fact gone flying out the window and a surreal fantasy had enveloped him instead. “It’s like an alternate reality,” he said of the premiere. “My everyday life is so boring, and then you go to these things and everyone thinks something cool is happening.” It is, dude. For a while. Pattinson’s press tour has been going on for weeks now, with the 25-year-old skipping across the globe and stopping to chat with MTV News on a number of occasions. Wherever he goes, though, the talk always seems to turn to one topic: sex. Specifically, the honeymoon boom-boom that Pattinson’s Edward Cullen shares with Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan. “It is kind of disgusting,” he laughed. “It’s weird. I feel like I’m going a little bit crazy. You can kind of say anything. It’s like sex and death.” One thing Pattinson hasn’t discussed — and one thing he jokingly admitted on the carpet — is that though “Breaking Dawn” ended up rated PG-13, he is quite sure the harder, bloodier version would have made for a better flick. “Oh yeah, completely. Definitely,” he said of an R-rated “Breaking Dawn.” “It’d be way better.” Stick with MTV News as we roll out even more from our “Breaking Dawn” premiere live stream! Director Jon Favreau tells MTV News there’s much more to the movie than the ‘silly’ title may suggest. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jon Favreau Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images When news broke that “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau had wrangled two of the biggest names in the action-movie business — Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig — to star in his intriguing genre mash-up “Cowboys & Aliens,” that and a compelling premise proved to be enough to send scores of fanboys online seeking advanced tickets. But though there’s lots of early buzz from the marquee names associated with “Aliens” (mega-watt producers Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard are also onboard), Favreau recently admitted to MTV News that he felt pressure to deliver something extraordinary for fans. “Of course, with Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg [producing], I’m in real good hands,” Favreau said about overcoming the challenges of establishing just the right tone for the movie. “I learned a tremendous amount from them, and I think when you cast Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig — with ‘Bond’ and ‘Indy,’ those are two franchises that are fun but not silly,” he added about Craig’s 007 and Ford’s “Indiana Jones” series. “And I think that if people take a clue from who I cast in the film as to how it’s going to play, it’s a good indicator,” he explained. Favreau went on to say that there’s far more to the film than what the title suggests. “I think [moviegoers] hear the name ‘Cowboys and Aliens,’ it sounds kind of silly, but it also sounds compelling and interesting,” he said. “So if they give it a chance, they’ll see it’s a fun movie, it’s an exciting movie, and I think it’s going to exceed their expectations.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Cowboys & Aliens.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘American Idol’ alum says she’s well into recording her yet-untitled, R&B-flavored debut. By Gil Kaufman Pia Toscano Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images You can’t blame Pia Toscano for being angry. The “American Idol” season 10 finalist was shockingly bumped from the competition in ninth place, though many viewers and experts suspected it was not the last time they would see — or hear from — the raven-haired singer. After Toscano scored a major-label deal with Interscope Records — making her the first ninth-place eliminee in “Idol” history to pull off such a feat — the 22-year-old New Yorker made it clear on her first single, “This Time,” that she’s determined to do things her way. “The song could pertain to ‘American Idol’ and my journey on the show,” Toscano told MTV News about the double meaning some fans and critics have found in the empowerment anthem’s lyrics about shaking off a guy (or a voting bloc) who did her wrong. “It’s a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, and it’s not just a breakup song.” The tune, with a heavy R&B beat and a twinge of twang that might not be out of place in a Carrie Underwood foot-stomper, was written by Ester Dean, who has made similarly smart anthems for Rihanna (“S&M,” “Rude Boy”) and Nicki Minaj (“Superbass”). Though she said no specific breakup in her past inspired the tune, Toscano — who is reportedly dating “Dancing With the Stars” pro Mark Ballas — said she felt like it suited her well and might just reflect on some things that have happened to her in the past. “I can 100 percent relate to it whether it’s about a relationship or my journey on ‘Idol,’ ” Toscano said as she navigated her way through an airport on her way to an Idols Live! Tour date in Oklahoma City. What’s ironic about the song is that Underwood-esque country twang mixed with an R&B backbeat, which gives it a sound like the kind of contemporary pop/country tunes you might expect from “Idol” runner-up Lauren Alaina. In it, she sings that she’s “mad as hell, ain’t gonna take it no more” and that she’s “gonna free herself.” “This time, I’m gonna do it my way/ This time, I’m finding out the hard way,” Toscano sings on the chorus. The former makeup artist said that’s just a preview of the range of sounds you can expect to hear on her yet-untitled debut, due in the fall. “It’s not just one thing, not pop or R&B,” she said, promising that “This Time” is an anomaly and she won’t be encroaching on Alaina’s or winner Scotty McCreery’s country airspace. “It will be pop with an R&B influence, with an edge,” she said of the album. “It will be soulful and powerful.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
‘All my windows still are broken but I’m standing on my feet,’ the star sings on new track. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Demi Lovato’s new single “Skyscraper” is finally here. The empowering ballad about finding strength in the wake of a waning relationship dropped on Tuesday (July 12). A piano plays as Demi sings, “Sky’s are crying, I am watching catching teardrops in my hands/ Only silence, as it’s ending, like we never had a chance.” By the second verse, an empowered Lovato begins to find more strength. As a beat kicks in, she sings, “As the smoke clears/ I awaken and untangle you from me/ Would it make you feel better to watch me while I bleed?/ All my windows still are broken but I’m standing on my feet.” And on the chorus, she proclaims, “You can take everything I have/ You can break everything I am/ Like I’m made of glass, like I’m made of paper/ Go on and try and tear me down/ I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper.” The song closes out with Demi proudly belting out that chorus. In a teaser for the video , directed by Mark Pellington and dropping this week, Demi is seen standing alone in the desert. She looks straight into the camera before the clip fades out. “This song is so special to me because it’s inspired by my journey and the struggles that I’ve dealt with this past year,” she told Seventeen.com . “I hope people are able to relate to it and realize that they are able to rise above and overcome any obstacle, no matter the circumstances, and shine like a skyscraper. I am still on a personal journey dealing with my own issues each and every day, but the best advice I can give to anyone going through a rough patch is to never be afraid to ask for help.” The song was written by Toby Gad and will be her first big release since leaving treatment earlier this year. “Recording this song was such an amazing experience for me. It was such an incredible and emotional process, and I couldn’t have asked for a better producer to work with than Toby Gad,” she said. “Toby is one of the sweetest people I know and I am so proud of the work we did together. My biggest wish for this song is that it’s able to inspire others and urge them to keep moving forward no matter what the odds.” What do you think of Demi’s new single? Tell us in the comments. Meyer’s love of Jane Austen can be seen throughout ‘The Twilight Saga.’ By Terri Schwartz Stephenie Meyer Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images With the final two “Twilight Saga” films on the horizon, author Stephenie Meyer is ready to sink her teeth into some non-vampire projects. Meyer will produce the Jane Austen-inspired “Austenland,” an adaptation of the Shannon Hale novel that will be directed by newcomer Jerusha Hess. Heat Vision has the news of Meyer’s involvement, reporting that filming begins this week in the U.K. The movie is about a woman whose obsession with Mr. Darcy is so strong it is ruining her love life, so she ends up going to an Austen-themed resort in England and inevitably falls for the Mr. Darcy actor at Austenland. The cast so far includes Keri Russell, J.J. Field, Bret McKenzie, Jennifer Coolidge, Jane Seymour, Rupert Vansittart and James Callis. Meyer has been a longtime fan of Austen’s work and credited the author’s “Sense and Sensibility” character Mr. Edward Ferrars with the decision to name her leading man Edward. In addition, “Twilight” was inspired by Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” to the point that main character Bella is reading the novel during the story and often compares her relationship with Edward to Elizabeth Bennet’s relationship with Mr. Darcy. This will only be the fourth film Meyer has produced and the first outside adaptations of her own works. The two “Breaking Dawn” movies were her first venture into producing, and now she is also attached to produce the upcoming adaptation of her book “The Host.” But she also had a chance behind the camera thanks to one of her favorite bands, Jack’s Mannequin , back in 2008. In addition to being influenced by classic romances, Meyer often cites inspiration from music. Singer/songwriter Andrew McMahon took her appreciation for his band Jack’s Mannequin a step further when he asked her to write a treatment for the music video of his song “The Resolution” and then come to Los Angeles and direct it for them. “I’m most excited because, when I was making this album, I wanted to find someone who was really talented and get them to write a treatment and just leave it alone and let it fly. And that’s exactly what we’re doing here,” McMahon told MTV News about his experience working with Meyer back in 2008.
