‘American Idol’ alum opens up about suicide attempt, teenage rebelliousness. By Kara Warner Fantasia on “Behind The Music” Photo: VH1 When Fantasia Barrino told America that she had “been through some stuff” upon winning the “American Idol” crown in 2004, she was putting it mildly. That didn’t even include her most recent struggles with a drug overdose and being accused of breaking up a marriage . On VH1’s latest episode of “Behind the Music,” which premiered Tuesday night (August 24), viewers learned that, although the spunky “Idol” winner has suffered several lows recently, she is on her way to a full recovery and proud of herself for being who she is. The episode opened with a detailed account of Barrino’s shocking overdose, in which she said she made attempted to end her life because she “didn’t have any fight” in her . “At that moment I didn’t care about anything. I just wanted out,” she said, boldly admitting that the overdose wasn’t at all an accident and that she was not happy when she woke up in the hospital and realized her suicide attempt “didn’t work” — until her nurse, Melody, told her to get up and fulfill her destiny. From there, the episode delves deep into Fantasia’s North Carolina roots — beginning with when she began singing (at age 5), then tracing her first love (ex-boyfriend Brandel Shouse, the father of her daughter, Zion), which would later turn into an abusive relationship. “He was somebody I was crazy about,” Barrino said. “The first guy who showed me attention.” Barrino recounted how in high school she started to crave attention in other ways, by wearing tight clothing, acting like she was already an adult, until her world was turned upside down after she was raped at her high school at age 14. “I didn’t even cry my way home,” she said of her feelings after the assault. “I was numb, very numb, confused, I just felt nasty. Disgusting.” Although she didn’t press charges, Barrino said she was unable to continue going to school because of the taunts and harassment from her classmates, so she dropped out and then “turned into a rebel,” until her hard-partying and careless ways landed her pregnant at 17. Unable to support herself and her daughter, Barrino began singing professionally, taking any gigs that paid, until she saw an episode of “American Idol” and fought her way into an audition. The rest of Barrino’s story is familiar to “Idol” fans: She was crowned the winner of season three, which she called “the best day of my life,” signed to a record contract with Clive Davis and was the first new artist to have a single debut at #1. Barrino’s post-“Idol” career path wasn’t smooth sailing, however. The young singer once again found herself nearly bankrupt after dealing with corrupt managers and legal woes, but she received new hope after being cast in “A Color Purple” on Broadway . From there, the episode delved into the star’s recent lows — a scare with throat tumors, which she had surgically removed — and her relationship with Antwaun Cook and the lawsuit from his ex-wife, Paula, which led to her suicide attempt last week. “I realize how people end up in the grave because of that one moment,” she said of that dark day. “Feeling like they can’t go on [because] it’s too heavy, that’s somewhere I never want to go again.” Fortunately, the episode ended on a high note, with Barrino proudly receiving her GED and walking in a graduation ceremony with the 2010 class of her former high school, St. Andrews. “I know that I am beautiful and special,” Barrino said. “I am who I am — and that’s what makes me Fantasia.” What did you think about Fantasia’s story on “Behind the Music”? Chris Brown says co-star Hayden Christensen ‘had swag’ in the film. By Shaheem Reid Chris Brown Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images When talking to the cast of the upcoming film “Takers” (arriving in theaters Friday), it was clear that each actor had to not only be sharp with his lines, but with his clothing as well. The film stars Idris Elba, T.I., Chris Brown, Paul Walker, Michael Ealy and Hayden Christensen as a crew of bank robbers out to steal approximately $30 million from an armored car. And when they’re not busy plotting their heist, the crew enjoy the finer things in life, from women to wardrobe. “For my end, my fashion in particular, I had as much input as one could have,” Tip said. “There were some things that were suggested that weren’t me. There were other things that faced adverse opinion at first, but after dialogue and compromise, I saw that it came out and worked best for the character’s presentation for the screen.” “How a man dresses is how you start to create this character,” Idris Elba, who plays the team’s leader, Gordon, affirmed. “I had a big influence on how Gordon looked. My team was in suits, that was a big component.” So with everyone on-set dressed to the nines, who had the flyest outfits? Chris Brown said it was a toss-up. “Hayden dressed dope,” the singer, sitting next to Michael Ealy, who plays his brother in the film, complimented. “You know, the hat, the suspenders. He had swag. That’s kind of my feel [in real life]. “And Idris, he had that white coat on,” Brown continued, referring to a scene where the gang gathers at their hangout spot, a jazz club owned by Ealy’s character. “He had that tuxedo on. Like, ‘Yeah, I’m the leader.’ ” “I saw Idris got to wear the white coat. I was digging the white coat,” Tip agreed. “I saw Hayden got to wear the hat. So everybody had a different element of fashion they brought to the table.” Ealy says it was no contest. “I felt I’m the best dressed through the entire piece,” he joked. “I’ll take best dressed.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Takers.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘The explosions, the shootouts, the chase scene with Chris,’ Tip teases at premiere for heist flick co-starring Chris Brown. By Shaheem Reid T.I. at the L.A. premiere of “Takers” Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images On Wednesday night at the Arclight Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, some of the biggest names in music, including Snoop Dogg and Keri Hilson, came out to support T.I. , Chris Brown and the rest of the cast of “Takers” at the film’s world premiere. Co-stars Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen and Michael Ealy lined the red carpet. Along with Paul Walker — who was absent because of filming for the next installment of “The Fast and the Furious” franchise in Puerto Rico — the trio play members of a team of bank robbers that includes Brown and Tip. In the film, the crew sets out to rob tens of millions of dollars from an armored truck. The action flick is filled with flying bullets, chases and explosions, but the King of the South said he couldn’t really take part in the more physical aspects of filming. “To be candid, they wasn’t allowing me to do many stunts myself,” T.I., who was married over the weekend , said on the red carpet. “Due to the circumstance of my personal [troubles], I witnessed a lot of them [instead]: the explosions, the shootouts, the chase scene with Chris. They’re outstanding.” During filming in early 2009, Tip was in the midst of a legal saga stemming from a federal gun case. “Takers” has been in the vault for quite some time, but neither the action nor the story feels dated, and on August 27 the rest of the world will get to see the stars try to pull off an elaborate heist. “We worked hard,” Tip told MTV News. “We worked hard. I think all of this is just a result of the hard work that was put into the project. Everybody gave 150 percent. Nobody laid back, nobody took off — everybody went hard. This is the result of that.” After the film, you know it’s the afterparty. The stars headed to L.A.’s Boulevard3, where Tip took the stage with Keri Hilson for a performance of “Got Your Back.” Not to be outdone, Chris Brown performed as well. C. Breezy focused on dancing and, midway through his set, hyped the crowd to the sounds of a few other artists’ hit records like “Shots,” “Teach Me How to Dougie” and DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win.” He told anyone over the age of 30 to party like they were 17, before shifting to reggae (he threw in some hip-hop moves). Later, Chris revived some ’90s R&B, singing a bit of R. Kelly’s “Bump N’ Grind” and Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It.” Brown also rocked a handful of songs such as “Deuces” with guest/mixtape partner Tyga. ‘I was in the same predicament in terms of being a new artist,’ he tells Vibe of UGK’s beginnings. By Mawuse Ziegbe Bun B Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Few can understand the outsize buzz that has accompanied Drake’s hotly anticipated debut, Thank Me Later. However, Houston hip-hop stalwart Bun B, who first started out with Pimp C in the influential duo UGK, said that he relates to the frenzy the Canadian MC has experienced during his rise to stardom. “To be honest, I was Drake,” Bun B told Vibe magazine. The Texas MC said he can relate to artists like Drizzy and Kid Cudi — who both leveraged their undeniable popularity as unsigned artists to score successful mainstream success — because he grappled with the same type of attention and hype from the industry while he was still grinding on the indie circuit. “I was in the same predicament in terms of being a new artist,” he said. “I was involved in a bidding war when we first came out independently. Labels were calling us and inviting us to meetings.” Bun B also told the magazine that his ability to stay relevant and uphold UGK’s legacy after being in the game for years has endeared him to the younger generation of MCs. “We were able to work it out in terms of UGK’s legacy and longevity. And we have inspired a lot of cats. I definitely get calls from up-and-coming artists about how to stick around for a while. I feel like some of these cats could use a little direction.” Bun also defended Drake against detractors who say the Toronto MC’s blending of lyricism and crooning isn’t authentic hip-hop. “I don’t know what they are talking about, personally, because if you are saying that, then that means you are trying to say that people like T.J. Swan, Slick Rick and Biz Markie are not hip-hop. Come on … all of those guys sung on their songs,” Bun said. “Singing in hip-hop is nothing new. We’ve always had people that incorporated singing in their raps. And believe me, if MCs could sing, they wouldn’t get singers to sing on their albums.” What do you think about Bun B’s Drake comparison? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Bun B Drake

Australian actor thought about the Denise Richards movie when emerging from the water as Riley. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Xavier Samuels at the “Eclipse” premiere Thursday Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images In trailers and clips, fans have already been teased with what it will look like when Riley and the army of newborn vamps emerge from the water, on their way to the final battle in “Eclipse.” Australian up-and-comer Xavier Samuel , who plays Riley, new the image would be dramatic, and he had a very interesting movie reference in mind as he got into character for that particular scene. “Well, I’m lucky it was kind of covered the first night at drama school,” he joked to MTV News at the red-carpet premiere of “Eclipse” in Los Angeles on Thursday night. “Let me say a large source of inspiration for that scene was Denise Richards in ‘Wild Things.’ ” Of course, movie buffs may point out that when Richards and Neve Campbell rise out of the pool in the 1998 movie, they’re actually referencing a scene in “Apocalypse Now,” but if it worked for Samuel, we won’t argue with him. And with “Eclipse” set to open on Wednesday (June 30), he said he now has a game plan for his next big Hollywood move. ” ‘Wild Things 5,’ ” he laughed when asked about his next project. “And hopefully that will continue on for a while.” Samuel said that there are few things in this world that would get him as hyped as the fans who had lined up for days outside Hollywood’s Nokia Theatre to catch a glimpse of their favorite “Twilight Saga” stars for the premiere . “I was really into Australian football when I was younger,” he said. “But I wasn’t writing posters or anything like that, but I can understand the degree of hysteria.” So, did he get any marriage proposal from any of the aforementioned fans? “I’ve only had one,” he revealed. “Not [married] yet, but I just thought I’d say, ‘Look let’s get to know each other. We should meet first, perhaps.’ Absolutely [I’d date a fan].” What other movie references have you seen in the “Twilight” movies? Talk about it in the comments. ‘I can’t help it, Joy, if America has a very dirty imagination,’ gossip blogger says. By Jocelyn Vena Perez Hilton Photo: Frazer Harrison/ WireImage Perez Hilton has felt the heat since tweeting a link to a photo of Miley Cyrus that appeared to show the pop star exiting a car without any underwear on. He’s already addressed the controversy in a video statement on his website, and on Thursday he visited HLN’s “The Joy Behar Show” to try to clear the air again. The gossip blogger told Behar that people “are getting upset over an image they didn’t see.” Though he did remove the link from his Twitter, he claimed, “You didn’t see anything down there. … I can’t help it, Joy, if America has a very dirty imagination. “I feel like if everyone saw this image in question, they would clearly see that you’re not seeing anything down there that you’re not supposed to,” Hilton continued. “It’s definitely not child pornography, and it’s definitely not illegal.” Hilton says he knew that the 17-year-old singer was wearing underwear in photo, and other pictures taken at the time clearly showed that she was. “I think it’s insulting to children to accuse that of [being] child pornography,” he said. “The point of me choosing that one photo is because it was showing Miley getting out of the car in an unladylike fashion,” he explained. “And I just thought that was funny and in keeping with her shocking behavior of late, because she was very well aware that she was in a public place at a video shoot and that there were paparazzi present. “I would have posted the image on my site had I been able to, but it was taken by one photo agency that I don’t have a deal with,” he added. “So, I’ve learned my mistake in the past about using photos that I don’t have licenses to.” In the end, the gossip blogger stands by his actions, despite having removed the tweet from his site. He noted that what he did is no different than the actions Cyrus has been taking as of late, in his opinion. “It’s not actually doing anything worse than Miley herself has been doing recently,” he argued. “From grinding up on her 40-something-year-old director to pole-dancing to all the over-sexualized things that she has been doing and turning herself into this creature.” Do you think Perez Hilton was wrong to post the photo of Miley? Gossip blogger posted a picture that appeared to show the 17-year-old singer exiting a car, sans underwear. By Kara Warner Perez Hilton Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Gossip blogger Perez Hilton is in hot water Tuesday (June 15) after posting a photo of Miley Cyrus to his Twitter feed. In the picture, which Hilton warned readers not to view if they were easily offended, Cyrus is shown exiting a car, seemingly sans underwear. “If you are easily offended, do NOT click here,” he tweeted. “Oh, Miley! Warning: truly not for the easily offended!” The public reaction to Hilton posting the photo — which he later removed — was fierce and quick. Hilton defended himself via a video he posted on his website , claiming the photo didn’t show what everyone thought it did. “Miley was clearly wearing underwear,” Hilton says in the video. “Do you think Miley is that stupid to be out in public without panties?” Hilton claimed he only posted the photo to make light of the fact that the teen pop queen was getting out of the car in “a very un-ladylike fashion.” “Sure, I like to be controversial,” he said. “But I don’t want to go to jail.” Salon.com consulted L.A.-based criminal defense attorney Jeffrey Douglas, who specializes in child-pornography cases. Douglas deemed Hilton’s liability “extraordinary and intense,” calling his decision to publish the photo “suicidal.” “We’re not talking about a misdemeanor,” Douglas told the site. “You don’t have to know what the definition of the law is; all you have to do is knowingly distribute the photograph.” The Disney star herself seemed to be handling the controversy when she called into Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show Tuesday morning. Cyrus pointed out that the incident is oddly timed with the release of her upcoming album, Can’t Be Tamed. “Isn’t it funny that things like that, that are so negative, have to come out right before my record?” she told Seacrest. “It’s like no one can let positive things happen. All I do is focus on the positive, and I hope this record does well.” Do you think Perez is telling the truth or backtracking? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Perez Hilton

After 59-year-old allegedly beat him with a bat, Bam can’t be hit on head for the movie. By Gil Kaufman Bam Margera Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Only in “Jackass” world would an accidental head injury prevent someone from suffering a planned head shot. According to TMZ , the assault on Bam Margera this weekend could prevent the “Viva la Bam” star from participating in the filming of the opening sequence of the upcoming “Jackass 3-D” movie. Bam was assaulted early Saturday morning (June 12) and beaten with a bat wielded by a 59-year-old woman, following a noise complaint at The Note, the bar that Margera owns in his hometown of West Chester, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth Ray, who lives on the same block as the bar, attacked Margera with a bat at around 2 a.m. on Saturday. She was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault and two counts of reckless endangerment. She posted $10,000 bail shortly after her arrest. Ray professed her innocence to the Philadelphia Daily News, claiming that Margera used racial slurs during their initial argument about the noise. “He called me the N-word,” she said. “I’m innocent, and he’s a jackass, just like his movies.” Margera was taken via ambulance to Chester County Hospital and treated for his injuries, and at press time no update was available on his condition. “Jackass” co-star Steve-O told TMZ that Margera had been brought into the intensive care unit of the hospital and was released a few hours later. “I think he’s gonna be OK,” Steve-O told TMZ. The one lasting effect of the beating is that the concussion Margera suffered has complicated his participation in the upcoming shoot for the intro to the third “Jackass” movie. TMZ reported that Margera flew to Los Angeles on Monday for the shoot, which calls for the entire “Jackass” crew to take some hard shots to the skull in slow motion 3-D. Margera reportedly told the site that his head-shot had to be rewritten because of the concussion and internal bleeding he suffered in the assault. A spokesperson for Margera could not be reached for comment at press time. “Jackass 3-D” is slated to hit theaters in October.

‘I’ve got to find something for him, because he’s been texting me,’ Todd Phillips says of Iron Mike. By Todd Gilchrist, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Last summer’s biggest comedy (and six-time MTV Movie Awards nominee ) “The Hangover” knocked out audiences like an uppercut from a heavyweight champion. And it stands to reason that director Todd Phillips would bring back the first film’s actual champ, Mike Tyson, for more sparring with co-stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha in the sequel. Saturday night at Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards, Phillips told MTV News that he’s looking for a part that Tyson can play in “The Hangover 2.” “I’ve got to find something for him, because he’s been texting me,” Phillips said. “I’ve got to figure it out. We’re going to find something for Mike.” The director also explained that the focus of the sequel won’t shift a lot from the first film, although some new characters will be introduced. “It’s expanding a bit, obviously,” he said. “There’s new people to be introduced. But the core cast is still who it’s about.” Since the completion of “The Hangover,” Phillips reunited with Galifianakis for a comedy called “Due Date,” which also Robert Downey Jr. Phillips said that and Downey commiserated about the challenges of following up a successful film with a satisfying sequel. “I became really close with Robert Downey, and he, of course, did ‘Iron Man 2,’ and he’s doing ‘Sherlock 2,’ ” Phillips said. “And when we were doing ‘Due Date,’ he talked to me a lot about the pressure you feel when you’re shooting that sequel, especially [for] something as beloved as ‘The Hangover’ was and, of course, as ‘Iron Man’ was.” Although audiences will enter the sequel with a wealth of expectations, Phillips said there’s actually something exciting about that pressure. “I think there’s another part of it which is really exciting — [which is] when you’re doing a comedy, can we do it again?” he explained. ” ‘The Hangover’ really worked because there were so many surprises, and it’s like, can we capture that again? So I’m kind of excited about it.” Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
