Matthew Weiner is Here: Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis to Star in Feature Directing Debut

This just in at ML HQ: Esteemed Mad Men creator and occasional director Matthew Weiner will make his feature filmmaking debut with You Are Here , to co-star Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis in a “funny, charming, and deeply honest film about who we were, who we are, and discovering the power to embrace life, no matter how much you screw it up.” There is also a road trip! And possibly Amy Poehler! Read on for full details from producer Gilbert Films. ========= LOS ANGELES, March 28 — Gilbert Films announced today that their next theatrical film project, YOU ARE HERE, will start production in May 2012 in North Carolina. The film, written and to be directed by Matthew Weiner (creator of Emmy and Golden Globe winning series MAD MEN, writer/executive producer of THE SOPRANOS) will star Owen Wilson (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, WEDDING CRASHERS) and Zach Galifianakis (THE HANGOVER, DUE DATE). Discussions are underway for Amy Poehler (PARKS & RECREATION) to co-star. Weiner will be making his big screen debut after having directed numerous episodes of the award-winning MAD MEN through its five years of production. Gary Gilbert, Scott Hornbacher, and Jordan Horowitz will produce. Lionsgate is handling international sales. Local weatherman and freewheeling bachelor Steve Dallas (Wilson) and bi-polar man-child Ben (Galafinakis) are childhood best friends who embark on a road trip home after Ben discovers that his estranged father has passed away. Once there, Ben is shocked to learn that his eccentric father had big plans for him and he’s inherited a whole lot more than his father’s money. As Ben struggles with his new responsibilities, his friendship with Steve is tested by the complications of his inheritance, his sister Terry’s (Poehler) ambition, and Steve’s desire to be with his father’s beautiful young widow Angela. YOU ARE HERE is a funny, charming, and deeply honest film about who we were, who we are, and discovering the power to embrace life, no matter how much you screw it up. “This movie has been my passion for eight years and to see it come together with Owen and Zach and Amy is a dream come true,” said Weiner. “I can’t wait to get started because the movie is about everything I care about and I’m tired of reading it out loud to my friends.” Noted Gilbert: “We are thrilled to finally bring this project to the screen. Matt is one of the brightest creative minds in television, and we are confident that this project will solidify the same reputation for him in the world of narrative film.” ###

Oscar 2012 Best Presenters: Robert Downey Jr., Bridesmaids, More

Co-stars Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis make a hilariously musical entrance, while Sandra Bullock shows off some impressive German. By Terri Schwartz Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow present at the 84th annual Academy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images There are typically two kinds of presenters at the Oscars : the earnest and the hilarious. But every year, a handful of actors manage to capture the goal of either category in a way that makes the moment unforgettable. On Sunday night, the Kodak Theatre saw plenty of earnest presenters. Natalie Portman, Colin Firth and Morgan Freeman reminded viewers why we love the Oscars. But it was the presenters with the funny bits who really stole the show. Whether comparing short films to male genitalia or tossing cymbals onstage when they should have been reading out the name of an award winner, we couldn’t stop chuckling. Here, the MTV Movies team handpicks the five most memorable presenters of the 2012 Oscars. Robert Downey Jr., Documentarian Trying to stay ahead of the curve, Robert Downey Jr. and a camera crew joined Gwyneth Paltrow onstage to present the Best Documentary award in an attempt to popularize his new art form, “live documentary.” Of course, as Paltrow pointed out, that’s called the news, but we couldn’t get enough of their Tony Stark/ Pepper Potts-style banter several months before “The Avengers” hits theaters. And we like that Downey joked that he turned down the role in “The Descendants” with George Clooney looking on from the crowd. Emma Stone Is Super Good Yes, Emma Stone is charming, but we were still surprised at how well she pulled off the task of co-presenting Best Visual Effects alongside Ben Stiller. First-time Oscar presenter Stone acted out her skit flawlessly and even managed to poke fun at Stiller’s previous presenting stunts in the process. But it was her asking “Superbad” co-star Jonah Hill to come onstage and dance with her — and his subsequent refusal — that made this one of the funniest moments of the night. Sandra Bullock Is “Extremely” Bilingual Did you know Sandra Bullock was bilingual? It certainly made her presenting the Oscar for Best Foreign Film all the more fitting. And although the actress said she was going to present the award in Mandarin, Bullock actually announced the award in German. For those who wondered about the Academy’s motivation for having the “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” star present in a different language, it turns out it was because the Academy Awards “are an international show and because there are over 1.2 billion people in China.” So why not? Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis Make Music Leave it to the stars of the upcoming political comedy “The Campaign,” Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, to make one of the funniest and most dramatic appearances of the night. Dressed in all-white tuxedos, the duo emerged from the orchestra pit smashing cymbals together. Because how else do you expect comedians to present the award for Best Original Song? Fortunately, winner Bret McKenzie also had a good sense of humor in his acceptance speech for “The Muppets” song “Man or Muppet.” “Bridesmaids” Stars Toast Scorsese Again Who else but the cast of “Bridesmaids” could make presenting the three short-film categories one of the most hilarious of the night? Sure, Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph’s whole opening spiel was one big penis joke, but can you expect any less when Melissa McCarthy earned her Oscar nomination for a part that featured her comically defecating in a sink? We’re still trying to figure out what the rules of Rose Byrne and McCarthy’s Martin Scorsese drinking game are, but we’ll let you know when we do. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Zach Galifianakis Scores With Second Appearance On ‘Saturday Night Live’

The idiosyncratic comic sings ‘Annie,’ shaves head, and lampoons ‘The Hangover’ on long running sketch comedy show. By Shawn Adler Zach Galifianakis on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC After a well-received performance from host Miley Cyrus last week that contained funny, if fairly straightforward and typical sketches, Saturday Night Live wasted no time in racing back to its anti-comedy roots, thanks to an appearance last night (March 12) from the improvisational and idiosyncratic Zach Galifianakis, who was hosting the program for the second time. Galifianakis set the episode’s tone early, delivering a monologue chock full of non-sequiturs (“In April, I’ll be babysitting my sister’s kids,” he said. “Via Skype.”), before plunging with gusto into a lip-synched performance of the song “Tomorrow” from “Annie.” Adorned in the character’s iconic short red dress, Galifianakis pranced and skipped across the stage while pretending to sing at the top of his lungs, simultaneously pulling back cue cards to goad the audience in a bizarre cross between Andy Kaufman’s “Mighty Mouse” and Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” “Clap if you endorse medical marijuana,” one cue card read. “I smoke so much pot sometimes I forget to smoke it,” read another. “Dukakis 2012,” read the last. From there, Galifianakis appeared as an audience member vocally disappointed that he was at a taping of “The Talk” rather than his preferred “The View,” and an airhorn blowing comic in a pre-taped bit titled “The Original Kings of Catchphrase Comedy Tour.” But while he also took turns alternately playing the Captain of the Titanic and a Canadian talk show host with a penchant for long vowels, the show’s highlight might have been when Galifianakis appeared on the long running skit “Scared Straight” alongside Kenan Thompson. Wheeled in on a gurney and dressed to look like Hannibal Lector, Galifianakis and Thompson played words like musical notes, turning names and titles like Helena Bonham Carter, Colin Firth and “Home Alone” into borderline filthy and scatological puns. “And there won’t be a baby and a papoose, it’ll be a baby’s arm in your caboose,” Galifianakis punned, referencing his star turn in “The Hangover.” Galifianakis also appeared on the digital short, which revolved around the comic interviewing children to be his new personal assistant. The musical guest was Jessie J, who brought along B.o.B to perform “Price Tag” during the show’s musical interlude. What did you think of Galifianakis’s performance on “Saturday Night Live?” Which skit was the funniest? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. The Wolfpack, folks, is on its way back. On May 26, The Hangover 2 hits theaters around the country. Featuring original stars Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, and Ed Helms, the sequel will find these well-meaning morons in Thailand for Stu’s wedding. As you might expect, things don’t go so smoothly during the pre-ceremony brunch. While the following trailer doesn’t reveal much about the follow-up, we dare you not to crack up at the sight of Galifianakis’ Alan… The Hangover 2 Trailer

‘Hangover Part II’ Trailer: The Five Coolest Moments

From the monkey on Bradley Cooper’s back to Ed Helms’ tribal face tattoo, we can’t wait to hit this destination wedding. By Eric Ditzian Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and Zack Galifianakis in “The Hangover Part II” Photo: Warner Bros. Todd Phillips promised and he delivered. Last week, the writer/director — who these days can’t seem to make an R-rated comedy that doesn’t do mega-business across the globe — assured MTV News that the teaser trailer for “Hangover Part II” would be popping up online this week. And pop up it has. True to Phillips’ words the footage is “truly a teaser,” with almost no dialogue and little hint about the events surrounding what clearly turns an innocent destination wedding in Thailand into a life-altering disaster. We do, however, contest Phillips’ speculation that the teaser “might end up frustrating more than solving questions.” While questions are hardly solved, we couldn’t be more pumped finally to feast our eyes on official footage from the Memorial Day weekend release. Here are our picks for the five coolest moments: Hotel or Prison? In “The Hangover,” Bradley Cooper and his pals find their way into one of the chicest suites in Las Vegas. Their digs in Thailand, alas, look more like the confines of a prison — less “King and I” than “Brokedown Palace.” There’s no way that this was their original resort locale. It’s anybody’s guess how and why the end up in this dump. Say Goodbye to That Security Deposit This image is a direct homage to the post-party scene in “Hangover”: After swilling what turned out to be roofie-infused booze, the friends awoke in their trashed Vegas suite, each one nursing a nuclear headache as a tiger roamed freely in the bathroom. This time around, the morning after takes place in a decidedly less glamorous environment and the big cat is replaced by an oversize cockroach. The Wolf Pack is Back In the original film, Zach Galifianakis proudly — and nonsensically — welcomed the crew into his wolf pack. Disaster ensued. This shot shows the gang back together again. Missing, interestingly, is Justin Bartha, who went missing in the first flick and whose absence in the new trailer seems to lend credence to the rumor that he’ll once again disappear in “Part II.” Is This Kind of Nice? The trailer’s first piece of dialogue belongs to Galifianakis and it’s, predictably, hilariously detached from what is clearly a seriously bad situation. Why else is a monkey wrapped around Cooper’s neck? Why does Galifianakis look like a blind man shaved his noggin? And about Ed Helms’ face … Mike Tyson, Trendsetter Iron Mike’s cameo in “Hangover” was one of the comedy’s finest pleasures. And as we’ve seen from “Part II” photos, Helms somehow finds himself branded with Tyson’s most infamous identifier: a tribal face tattoo. For a guy about to get married, that’s just not a good look. As he says before hanging his head, “Oh god!” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . The Verge: Keir Gilchrist

As gay teen Marshall on United States of Tara , Keir Gilchrist often seems to be too preternaturally sensitive for the real world, and his lead role in the Toronto-premiering It’s Kind of a Funny Story (adapted from the Ned Vizzini novel by indie directors Ryan Boden and Anna Fleck) takes that personality type to its logical conclusion: His character, Craig, checks himself into a mental hospital after life seems like too much to bear. Gilchrist talked to Movieline about booking the role, improvising with costar Zach Galifianakis, and why he’s not a big fan of preparation.
