Lady Gaga Says Next Album Is ‘Beginning To Flourish’

‘I have the name for it,’ Gaga reveals to MTV News, while producer Fernando Garibay says they’re hoping to ‘outdo’ Born This Way. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias and Vanessa WhiteWolf Lady Gaga Photo: MTV News Lady Gaga is perhaps the busiest monster of them all. Just six months after dropping her chart-topping Born This Way, the Mother Monster is already hard at work on its follow-up. “I’ve started writing it and I have the name for it and all the concepts are beginning to flourish and take place,” she told MTV News at Jingle Ball in Los Angeles, where she also talked about her Grammy nods and “Marry the Night” video . “I’m excited to put it out, but it’s not done yet. So I’ll put it out when it’s done.” BTW contributor Fernando Garibay recently stopped by the MTV News offices in Santa Monica, California, and shared the vision he has in mind for Gaga’s next release . “I get a little bit of anxiety thinking about that right now,” the producer said of plans for the album. “I wanna just always try to outdo ourselves, our songs. “They’re already incredible songs. But I feel like she’s so young,” he said, adding that the record is in its early stages and that “there’s a lot of room to grow.” While Gaga will hit the road on the Born This Way Tour next year, Garibay said that won’t halt the recording process. “The last record we made in bus stops and hotel rooms,” he said. “Wherever she’s at, we’ll make it.” However the recording schedule pans out, Garibay knows he and Gaga will continue experimenting with new sounds. “She’s the perfect platform for me to express myself,” he said. “You can do stuff with her that you can’t do with anybody else. It’s amazing.” What are you expecting from Gaga’s next album? Share your ideas in the comments! Related Videos MTV First: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Machine Gun Kelly, Kendrick Lamar To Visit ‘RapFix Live’

Roscoe Dash will also check in Wednesday at 4 p.m. on MTV.com, when 2011’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs list will be revealed. By Rob Markman Machine Gun Kelly Photo: MTV News There is no denying that hip-hop veterans like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Rick Ross have all had a remarkable 2011, but the past 12 months also saw the meteoric rise of some of the game’s most exciting young MCs as well. Since the top of the year, artists like Mac Miller and Meek Mill have established themselves as bona fide stars. On Wednesday at 4 p.m. on MTV.com, “RapFix Live” will explore the budding careers of some very notable rap rooks, as Machine Gun Kelly, Roscoe Dash and Kendrick Lamar check in to discuss their big year. During the show, MTV News will also reveal the list of 2011’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs. Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established in 2010 by MTV News as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done and the votes were tallied, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang general beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. “It’s a great thing to be recognized on that level, and really just by my fans,” Wiz told MTV News after his win. “That award right there, I feel it was real special to me, because I feel like my whole career has just been based off my fans. My fans just really came through and they just pushed me over.” The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during December 14’s “RapFix Live,” along with a special announcement about the next Hottest MCs in the Game. To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010’s Hottest Breakthrough MC poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won’t be part of this conversation. The fan-voted winner of Hottest Breakthrough MCs will be considered in the upcoming 2011 Hottest MCs in the Game list as well. Who will be crowned Hottest Breakthrough? It’s all up to you, so tune into “RapFix Live” for the full list of rookie MCs. Catch Machine Gun Kelly, Kendrick Lamar and Roscoe Dash on “RapFix Live” Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive! Nicki Minaj A Not-So-New Best New Artist Nominee

J. Cole, Skrillex and Bon Iver have also been around for years before rookie Grammy nods. By Gil Kaufman Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images There are many reasons people love to bash the Grammys, but one of the most frequent punching bags is the Best New Artist category. Whether it goes to someone music fans have never heard of (2010’s Esperanza Spalding ), an act who’s been around forever (2001’s Shelby Lynne), or one that even at his or her peak seemed unworthy at best (notorious 1981 flash-in-the-pan Christopher Cross), Best New Artist is a perennial head-scratcher. By Recording Academy rules, the award is for a musician or band who releases an album during the year of eligibility that establishes their “public identity” as an artist. That doesn’t mean it’s their first album or that they suddenly appeared on the scene just that year, because, really, no act just materializes out of thin air and makes their way to the Grammys without years of unseen road, club and studio work. But a look at this year’s nominees is proof that in an age of mixtapes, YouTube, features and blog love such “new” acts as Bon Iver, Nicki Minaj, Skrillex and J. Cole are practically veterans by the time the Academy decides to shine its spotlight. In fact, of all this year’s nominees, only country trio the Band Perry are truly “new,” and they formed in 2005, then gigged around and dropped a few singles until their only full-length studio recording was released in late October of last year. William, Harry & Kate: British Olympic Ambassadors!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry are joining forces in their official new roles as ambassadors to the British Olympic and Paralympic teams. Sadly, Pippa Middleton is not royalty and thus, will not be participating along with the aforementioned, adorable trio. She remains royally cute, however. The Royals are part of a group of 27 other ambassadors named from among Britain’s most inspirational and accomplished Olympians from previous games. In the cuteness department, team Great Britain has already won gold . “Catherine, Harry and I are honored” and “hugely looking forward to an incredible sporting competition, but are also looking beyond next summer’s games to the springboard it will provide for future success and excellence,” William said in a statement. “London hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will inspire so many people – particularly the young – to be the best they can be,” he added . Their offices at St. James’s Palace said the Royals will “use their roles to promote the importance of participation in Olympic and Paralympic sport and encourage greater awareness of the Olympic and Paralympic values.” For Kate Middleton , the appointment positions her in another major national role after her being named a patron for the country’s Princess Foundation. Among themselves, all three are athletic: William, an avid swimmer, hopes to run a marathon, takes part in soccer and rugby, and plays tennis with Kate. She played hockey at school, and still loves the game, as well as tennis. William’s younger brother Harry is a major rugby and polo enthusiast. [Photos: WENN.com]

Jennifer Lopez Planning Greatest-Hits Album

Vocal producer Kuk Harrell tells MTV News he’ll team with Tricky Stewart and The-Dream for the project. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Jennifer Lopez Photo: Mike Coppola/ Getty Images Jennifer Lopez certainly has had some big hits. Since releasing her debut album, On the 6, in 1999, J.Lo has commanded pop radio with tracks like “If You Had My Love,” “I’m Real,” “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” and “Jenny From the Block.” And she hasn’t stopped. This year, she released Love?, featuring club bangers like “On the Floor.” Now, J.Lo plans to give her fans a proper greatest-hits album. “I just got the call a week ago that the greatest-hits album for Jennifer Lopez is coming up,” vocal producer Kuk Harrell told MTV News. “Now I’m just waiting for them to put on the schedule [and] let me know what songs we’re actually cutting and stuff like that.” While he didn’t have too many details about what fans should expect on the album, Harrell did share who else Jenny is hitting the studio with. “I think [when] I find out what the direction is, I will definitely go in the lab. I will get in the lab with Tricky Stewart and The-Dream and see what we can come up with for it.” Harrell has certainly been busy this year. He worked with Rihanna on her Talk That Talk album , Justin Bieber on Under the Mistletoe (and will work with him again on his next album) and now has plans to hook up with Lopez. He’s grateful for all the opportunities he’s been given. “I’m so fortunate to be able to work with Rihanna and Justin Bieber … and Jennifer Lopez for that matter, so anytime a call comes in to work with the three of them, it’s always ‘yes,’ because it’s just assumed [it’ll be good],” he said. “They’re superstars, so how are you going to turn them down? Unless we have a scheduling conflict, but it’s always a ‘yes.’ It’s always an immediate ‘we’re gonna kill it.’ That’s when my competitive edge comes out. It has to be the best. It has to be better than anything we’ve ever done.” What tracks do you hope to see on J.Lo’s greatest-hits album? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Jennifer Lopez

Tupac Shakur Was ‘Mad Talented,’ Phife Dawg Recalls

Phife will appear on ‘Yo! MTV Raps: Classic Cuts’ on MTV2 on Sunday. By Rob Markman Tupac Shakur Photo: Steve Granitz/ Wireimage During its history, “Yo! MTV Raps” documented the rise of hip-hop’s most revered artists. One of rap’s most iconic figures, Tupac Shakur , gave the show many memorable moments; one in particular found a fiery ‘Pac airing out his beef with “Menace II Society” film directors Albert and Allen Hughes. Still, as controversial as Tupac was, he sure did get a lot of love. “Dude was just mad talented,” Phife Dawg told MTV News of Tupac. “He’s a human being, he’s made some mistakes along the way, blah, blah, blah, but the love was there. You couldn’t tell the ladies nothing about Tupac. Now that I live on the West Coast, I really see for myself firsthand how much love that dude gets.” Phife, a former member of A Tribe Called Quest , will appear on “MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps: Classic Cuts” on December 4. He made his bones in the early 1990s, much like ‘Pac. While they both hailed from New York, Shakur called California home. “A lot of people forget he’s originally from Harlem, went to school in Baltimore with Jada Pinkett Smith — they forget that he’s actually from the East Coast,” Phife explained. “But one thing I heard ‘Pac say is, ‘I learned the game of life from the West Coast.’ So I guess he can say West Coast is home.” When the topic of the greatest MC of all time comes up, Shakur’s name is usually mentioned, but in Phife’s opinion, when out in California, there’s not even an argument: Tupac reigns supreme. ” ‘Pac is king on the West Coast,” he said. “Nobody touches Tupac out there.” Watch “MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps: Classic Cuts” on December 4 at 12 a.m. ET, immediately after the “2011 Sucker Free Awards.” Related Videos Reminisce Over The Return Of ‘Yo! MTV Raps’ With These Classic Clips

Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg Video Debuts Wednesday On MTV

‘Young, Wild & Free’ is first clip off ‘Mac & Devin Go to High School’ soundtrack. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Matt Elias Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa on the set of “Young, Wild & Free” Photo: Matt Elias/MTV News The school year may already be in full swing, but on Wednesday, fans will get their first glimpse of Snoop Dogg and ‘s “Mac & Devin Go to High School” film when the smoked-out duo premiere the video for “Young, Wild & Free” on MTV. Starting at 6 a.m. ET the video will debut across MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Hits, MTV.com and MTV Jams, where it will play every hour. Directed by Dylan Brown, “Young, Wild & Free,” featuring Bruno Mars on the hook, is the first video from the official “Mac & Devin Go to High School” soundtrack. While integrating movie scenes into music videos sometimes gets cumbersome, Dogg and Khalifa worked things out by cleverly filming the clip in a Montclair, California, drive-in theater. “We got some more party scenes where we just gonna be doing our verses and having the scenes from the movie play on the big screen from the actual movie ‘Mac & Devin Go to High School,’ ” Snoop told MTV News on the video set back in October. “So people get a chance to see a few scenes and see us perform at the same time.” In one particular scene, the pair race in off-road karts, with some choice video models in tow. “We just getting it crackin’ in the parking lot, man, turning this thing out, so we had a couple of our little friends in the car and we drove fast,” Wiz said. “I had to level out the playing field; I had some weight issues so I had a couple of girls roll with me to level out my car,” Snoop jokingly added. The song is a carefree affair, with Mars singing, “So what we get drunk, so what we smoke weed/ We’re just having fun, we don’t care who sees” on the track’s hook. Keeping in tune with the single’s theme, Wiz raps about rolling up and sagging his jeans while Snoop rhymes like he’s 17 years old all over again. Khalifa teases that the entire soundtrack will carry a similar mood. “We got the homey Juicy J on the soundtrack, we got Curren$y on the soundtrack, but mainly it’s just me and Dogg,” he said. “It’s a real big deal because nobody’s done it like that as far as a veteran, an O.G. in the game, a pioneer, and then the newest, youngest, most exciting dude in rap coming through and really just giving the people a complete project.” “The music is quality,” Snoop said. Are You Feeling These Get Ups? Tyga Celebrates His 22nd Birthday With Drake’s Sloppy Seconds Blac Chyna

Damn… *Drake voice* Guess bountiful cakes are thicker than water in this case… Last night, YMCMB rapper Tyga celebrated his born day in Las Vegas with friends, family, and Drake’s ex-stripper “girlfriend” Blac Chyna. For those asking “Who the hell is Blac Chyna?” Allow us to explain” On Drake’s hit record “Miss Me” featuring Lil Wayne, the Toronto MC recites the following bars: “Call up King Of Diamonds and tell Chyna it’d be worth the flight/ I’ll be at my table stackin’ dollars to the perfect height/ Work somethin’, twerk somethin’ basis/ She just tryna make it/ So she right here gettin’ naked/ I don’t judge her, I don’t judge her/ But I could never love her/ ‘Cuz to her I’m just a rapper and soon she’ll have met another…” Well Aubrey Graham just might be the most clairvoyant rapper in the game, because that is exactly what happened! Tyga has been seen galavanting around L.A. with this broad for several weeks now and we refuse to believe that he isn’t chopping down her ample (and probably “injected”) backs! The say it ain’t trickin’ if you got it… Flip the page to peep Chyna’s birthday cakes as well as some questionable outfit pics from Tyga’s party.

‘X Factor’ MC Astro Calls Drake’s Take Care ‘A Classic’

‘I feel like I’m trying to be a part of that group that brings hip-hop back,’ pint-size rapper tells MTV News backstage. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Astro Photo: MTV News While many of his fellow contestants were getting dinged for not going hard enough on Wednesday night’s rock-themed episode of “X Factor,” that was not a problem for pint-size sensation Astro. The swagtastic 15-year-old rapper with the heart of a champion put up another great performance with a cover of Diddy’s “I’ll Be Missing You.” And though he’s lamented that hip-hop is dead and he’s the one to bring it back, Astro did make an exception for one artist he thinks is killing it right now. “You can’t not say Jay-Z,” he told MTV News’ Jim Cantiello after the show when asked to name anyone besides the Jiggaman who is on top of their game right now. “That has to be included. Jay, Kanye, Lupe [Fiasco], Pharrell … Drake? That album is classic,” he added about the Canadian MC’s just-released Take Care. “Everything from the artwork, the inside pictures. Drake is awesome, and I feel like I’m trying to be a part of that group that brings hip-hop back also.” Astro — whose song fit the rock theme if only because Diddy sampled the Police classic “Every Breath You Take” — paid homage to a number of fallen hip-hop greats during his performance.
