T.I. Says Pharrell Asked Him To Vent On ‘Get Back Up’

‘I just need you to get those same sentiments, those same feelings on a record,’ Tip recalls the producer telling him. By Hillary Crosley T.I. Photo: MTV News It’s no secret that T.I. is experiencing a difficult time in his career. The Atlanta rapper was on the cusp of releasing his comeback album, then titled King Uncaged, following a one-year prison stint when he was arrested once again. Tip was sentenced to 11 months for violating his parole and shipped back to the same Arkansas facility he’d just left. But through it all, the MC found inspiration for the track “Get Back Up” from his now-titled No Mercy album. “Yeah, ‘Get Back Up,’ produced by Pharrell of the Neptunes, one of the most passionate, genuine, artistic guys that I’ve met in the game and has had a hand in my movement since my very first album,” T.I. said. “He was one of the first big producers to work with me.” Tip said the pair reconnected and were recording for his then-forthcoming seventh LP when disaster struck. “Prior to my arrest, we had done about three or four songs, considerably hot records, some of which you’ll definitely be hearing on this project,” T.I. said during our exclusive “RapFix Live” interview . “But … I left out the studio, and the next day, I go to jail, or I get arrested, which took me in a whole ‘nother, different direction. “When all of these things started coming to pass, Pharrell called me like, ‘Hey, man, somebody somewhere is trying to tell you something,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, you know, that may be,’ ” the MC continued. “Then we had a conversation at length about how I felt about the media’s portrayal of my circumstances. And he said, ‘You know what? That’s what you need to say in a song.’ And I say, ‘Man, I ain’t talking about no music right now, P.’ And he say, ‘But that’s what they wanna hear, that’s what you need to tell ’em. Just ride with me on this. I’mma get it to you, and I just need you to get those same sentiments, those same feelings on a record.’ I said, ‘All right, man, give it to me.’ ” It didn’t take the talented producer long to craft a beat perfect for Tip’s emotions. “So it might’ve been a week or two later, he called me and it might’ve been at 4 o’clock in the morning, like, ‘I got it!’ ” T.I. recalled. “I immediately heard the potential, I immediately heard that this was a special record, a personal record, a statement record … and one that could be delivered with humility and not as defensive as it may sound in conversation if I said it.” What do you think of “Get Back Up”? Daft Punk’s ‘Derezzed’ Video: Behind The ‘Tron Legacy’ Nerdery

We take a closer look at the just-released clip from the sequel’s soundtrack. By Eric Ditzian A scene from Daft Punk’s “Derezzed” Photo: Walt Disney Records What would happen if Daft Punk were not only tasked with drafting the score for “Tron Legacy” but also were given full creative control of the Disney-backed sequel? Well, it would probably rock, and it would probably look a lot like the group’s just-released music video for “Derezzed.” The video pays deep respect to the 1982 original movie (light-cycles, black-and-neon grids, gladiator games) while staking out new visual territory and just being kinda weird (what’s up with that bird?). For committed “Tron” nerds, the music video speaks in their language, but the uninitiated might be a bit lost. That’s where MTV News comes in. Let’s begin at the beginning, OK? The video opens on a shot of Flynn’s Arcade . The Flynn in question is Kevin (played in both movies by Jeff Bridges), a game designer working for a tech company called Encom until his creations are stolen by a nefarious rival, and he’s promptly sacked. He ends up opening the arcade, which becomes a popular hangout in the early ’80s. But running an arcade just ain’t gonna cut it for a guy as ambitious as Flynn. He hatches a plan to break into Encom and prove the company’s new games — such as Space Paranoids and Matrix Blaster — are actually his own. Flynn’s heart was in the right place, but what he didn’t count on was an Encom mainframe capable of sucking him into a computer world. That’s exactly what happens, and throughout the first film Flynn is forced to fight off all sorts of pixilated baddies . And that’s pretty much what happens to the Daft Punk dudes when they pop a few quarters into that “Derezzed” video console . There’s no such game in the Encom world, but “derezzed” is an especially resonant word in the “Tron” universe: It’s a sort of digital death in which your program essentially disappears. “Derez” is what happens to that unfortunate jouster late in the music video. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Back to Flynn’s Arcade! Once Daft Punk have powered up the game, their digital selves — “programs,” in “Tron”-speak, which are written by “users” like Flynn — materialize in the game world as light-cycles that flicker into being. Of all the beloved “Tron” imagery, light-cycles are easily the most iconic. The vehicles are part of a gladiatorial racing game that Flynn created. Once inside the computer world, though, he finds himself actually racing along on them (the object is to make competitors crash into the trail of light your bike emits). Daft Punk tweaks the light-cycle motif when it becomes clear these aren’t just bikes but mechanized horses . We’ve got an old-fashioned joust on our hands! We haven’t seen that before. But then, we haven’t seen anything like this music video before. “Tron,” while revolutionary in its time, hardly looks cool by 21st-century standards; its chunky graphics and limited color palette are amusingly outdated. “Tron Legacy,” by contrast, brings to bear the very latest in computer-generated imagery; it is reminiscent of, but distinctly different from, its progenitor. The music video splits the difference with a retro-contemporary hybrid: This is the 1982 aesthetic cut through with 2010 moviemaking technology. It’s both for the old-school geeks for whom “Tron” is akin to scripture and the whippersnappers who, sure, know something about the original film, but would never, like, sit down and watch it yet still are psyched to see the new flick when it hits theaters December 17. Waka Flocka Flame ‘Feels Good’ About Gold-Certified ‘No Hands’

‘The first song going gold is big for me,’ Atlanta MC tells MTV News of club staple. By Hillary Crosley, with additional reporting by Audrey Kim Waka Flocka Flame Photo: MTV News 2010 has been a banner year for Waka Flocka Flame , not only in the streets, but also on the Billboard charts. Now, the Atlanta MC’s female-flavored anthem “No Hands,” featuring Roscoe Dash and Wale, has been certified gold by the RIAA after selling 500,000 copies. “That feel good, the first song going gold is big for me,” Waka Flocka Flame told MTV News at the Power 106 Cali Christmas concert in Los Angeles. “It means that I’m growing as an artist, so I need to take effect to that.” After dropping his mixtape Salute Me or Shoot Me, Vol. 1 in January 2009, many were introduced to the energetic rapper through “O Let’s Do It,” Waka’s breakout record. The rowdy club track quickly became a fan favorite and, a year later — after he peppered the streets with more mixtapes and a guest verse on “Bingo,” from Gucci Mane’s 2009 LP, The State vs. Radric Davis — “O Let’s Do It” got an official remix featuring Diddy, Rick Ross and Gucci Mane. Then “Hard in Da Paint” took over the clubs in early 2010, followed by “No Hands,” which currently sits at #1 on Billboard ‘s Rap Songs chart, #22 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Earlier this year, MTV News’ Hip-Hop Brain Trust voted the rapper 2010’s #8 Hottest MC in the Game . “I was like, got-damn!” Waka said at the time. “Oh, sh–, I made it! Hell yeah, I was [surprised]. Come on, man, I never thought I’d be on something like that. Not yet. It’s so soon.” What do you think of Waka’s breakout success this year? Sound off in the comments! Soulja Boy Makes Wishes Known With ‘Grammy’

SB tells ‘RapFix Live’ he wants The DeAndre Way to show ‘Soulja Boy has grown, he’s developed, he’s matured, and he’s going places.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Soulja Boy Tell’em Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News Soulja Boy Tell’em has gone on record with his goal to be taken more seriously as a lyricist. Kanye West and 50 Cent are two peers of the young rapper who have co-signed his talent, which he first showed off in 2007 with the playful “Crank That (Soulja Boy).” On his new album, The DeAndre Way , however, SB is yearning to be seen as more than just an artist who has an affinity for making the teen set dance. “Grammy,” featuring Ester Dean, is a slow-turning contemplation of his career and his desire to win one of the music industry’s most-coveted awards. “That was really to strike that emotion, to tell that story,” Soulja Boy told MTV News during an appearance on “RapFix Live” on Thursday. “This album, I want people to take from it that Soulja Boy has grown, he’s developed, he’s matured, and he’s going places.” In the past year, SB has stepped up to the plate to rhyme alongside a higher caliber of rapper than ever before, from Drake to 50 Cent. The G-Unit superstar has long been an admirer of his labelmate, which SB talked about with MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway. “To have 50 have my back, that’s definitely exciting; it’s an achievement. 50 don’t mess with no rappers,” Soulja explained. “When I came out, there [was] a lot of people that was hating on me [and] felt like I wasn’t real to the game — don’t hate the player, hate the game. 50 shed light on me, and he came to my defense.” Are you a fan of The DeAndre Way ? Black Eyed Peas Confirmed For Super Bowl Halftime Show

Peas will touch down during big game on February 6. By Gil Kaufman Black Eyed Peas Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images As if any more proof were necessary, the Black Eyed Peas will cement their reputation as one of the biggest bands in the world in February when they take the stage during the Super Bowl XLV halftime show. After unconfirmed reports surfaced last week that the hip-pop superstars would be breaking the recent chain of classic rock halftime performers, representatives from the National Football League made it official on Sunday. The Peas, whose latest album, The Beginning , is due out on Tuesday, will play the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLV Halftime show during the big game at Cowboys Stadium on February 6. Even for a group that has played to massive crowds across the globe, the Super Bowl gig is a once-in-a-lifetime affair, as it is the most-watched TV event of the year, seen by more than 153 million viewers in the U.S. and millions more around the globe. Both the game and the halftime show will be broadcast worldwide. The Peas will become the first non-rock act in seven years to perform on the biggest stage in TV, following in the footsteps of a glittering procession of classic rock acts that have had the honor in recent years, including Sir Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, and last year, the Who. As extra incentive for fans to pick up The Beginning, the band is offering a chance to be their special guests at the Super Bowl halftime show. The megashow will be the first of what will likely be a whole year of blowouts according to BEP leader will.i.am , who recently told Billboard magazine that his group hopes to fill stadiums around the globe in 2011. Rihanna for Interview Magazine of the Day

I know why Rihanna is famous. She brainwashes you with her songs. I’ve seen Josie and the Pussycats, I know how the music industry works, cuz some songs just rape my fucking brain hard the first time I hear them and the repressed memories of the shit keep coming out to haunt me at the weirdest times, like when I am trying to be intimate with another person or intimate with myself, or pretty much doing anything, all I hear is her new fucking song from the AMA performance….I fell asleep with it in my head, I woke up with it in my head, I may have even dreamt about it….It is still in my mind and I’ve been thinking about it all day…Oh na na what’s my name, Oh na na, what’s my name…that song basically revamped this bitch in my eyes and made me a fucking believer again. Oh na na, What’s my name, Oh Na na, what’s my name….Seriously, she’s back and it scares me how inconsistent and bi-polar and schizo I am about this bitch….Oh na na, what’s my name, oh na na what’s my name….Fuck, I hated her, I found her vile looking, everytime I saw her I was disgusted about everything about her, from selling out her man for putting her in her place, to her thighs….but she’s got me in her Voodoo West Indian spell….get her out of my brain….this isn’t making sense to me…Oh na na, what’s my name, Oh na na, what’s my name….fuck. Singing this song makes me feel homosexual. Here she is in a recent Interview magazine spread: I’ve watched this AMA performace so many times, I know every single move by heart. Seriously. This was the game changer for me. Rihanna’s back. I have lost my mind…

‘King’s Speech’ Star Colin Firth Talks Awards-Season Love And ‘Dumb Luck’

2010 best actor nominee looks poised for another Oscar nod. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Colin Firth in “The King’s Speech” Photo: The Weinstein Company For the second year in a row, Colin Firth finds himself at the center of awards-season chatter. And after losing out on a best actor Oscar for “A Single Man,” the 50-year-old actor has again established himself as one of the frontrunners in that category, thanks to his turn as the stammer-afflicted King George VI on the verge of Britain’s entry into World War II in “The King’s Speech.” It seems Firth is an actor at the top of his game, but to hear him tell it, it’s as much a matter of good fortune as it is great talent. “It’s just dumb luck,” he told MTV News at the Toronto film festival in September. “That’s all: Just getting a crack at it. Sometimes you just take roles to stay in the game or pay bills and hope the good ones are going to come along. “I was never in a world of perfect choice, and now I feel like I’ve had a couple of real plums landing in my hand,” he added. It was at fall film festivals in Toronto and Telluride, Colorado, as critics first began to catch screenings of “King’s Speech,” that it became clear we’d still be talking about Firth’s performance come awards season. He’s been faithfully making the publicity rounds ever since, and as he told us when we chatted earlier this month in New York, he’s not bored with the experience. “Funnily enough, I find it easier than many things,” he said. “There are so many angles you can approach it from, to do with the way people are reacting to it to the surprises we’ve had along the way to nuances about the actual history itself. I think this has a lot of mileage in it. “It’s been very gratifying for audiences to have howls of laughter and be open to crying,” he continued. “To see that happening in the same film is a triumphant feeling. When you’re in Telluride, you can put it down to altitude — one glass of wine amounts to 10. So we had to test it at sea level as well to see if people enjoyed it, and they did.” Did you see Firth’s performance as King George VI? Give us your review in the comments below.
