Swedish House Mafia Set To Take Over Madison Square Garden

‘It’s one of those moments you’re never going to forget as long as you live,’ Steve Angello says about MSG one-night stand. By Adam Stewart, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Axwell and Steve Angello of Swedish House Mafia Photo: MTV News The boys are back in town — and this time they’ve gone big. In fact, it doesn’t get much bigger. Just two years shy of the anniversary of their New York City debut at M2 nightclub, Swedish House Mafia is revved up and ready to rock Madison Square Garden on Friday (December 16) with their high-energy, heart-pounding sight-and-sound spectacular. Group members Steve Angello and Axwell took time out of their jam-packed schedule on Thursday to sit down with MTV News and share their excitement for the night that the dance music world can’t stop talking about. “It’s just pretty unbelievable,” Axwell gushed. “We were obviously scared when we decided to do it because it’s such a big place, it’s such an expensive place to rent and it’s hard to fill. But so many people bought tickets and it sold out in 10 minutes, and just, Wow! you know? It’s really amazing that we have that sort of appreciation this side of the Atlantic.” “[Madison Square Garden] is great. It’s a beautiful place,” said Angello. “Since we were kids, we’ve always seen the hockey and basketball [games]. It’s one of those places — it’s the Garden. It’s everyone in basketball’s favorite place to play, and it’s just magic — it’s New York!” Their presence at one of the world’s most iconic venues is certainly reflective of the exploding EDM scene here in the States as well as one of the world’s most important music cities. The Swedes have been an integral factor in cultivating the sonic palette of cool culture in America. “New York is one of those places where you’re always shocked when you leave a show here because of the energy and the crowd,” Angello said. “I know how I’m going to feel tomorrow after the show. It’s one of those moments you’re never going to forget as long as you live — one of those key moments in your career” This moment has been so massive in the Big Apple that the trio decided to add a second show, in what’s being dubbed an afterparty, just up the street at the Roseland Ballroom. All of the action is paired with the highly anticipated digital release of their latest single, “Antidote,” a collaboration brought forth by Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen of Pendulum, under their dubstep-infused production moniker, Knife Party. “Steve was in the tour in Australia, [he] met up with Knife Party and started out with the idea there,” Axwell said. “[But] we wanted the track to have some sort of identity, we wanted to have the instrumental and all, but it would be nice with some identity, [so] we started working with a guy named Klas

Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, More Light Up Z100 Jingle Ball

Kelly Clarkson delivers jaw-dropping set, as LMFAO, Gym Class Heroes, David Guetta and viral sensations Karmin help fill jam-packed MSG lineup. By Henna Kathiya Lady Gaga performs at Jingle Ball on Friday Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Without skipping a beat, Z100’s annual Jingle Ball kicked off at exactly 7:30 p.m. Friday night to an arena full of screaming fans. The head-turning lineup featured Demi Lovato , Kelly Clarkson, LMFAO , Pitbull, Foster the People, Mindless Behavior, the Script David Guetta , Gym Class Heroes and Lady Gaga , who brought some of the year’s biggest hits to the Madison Square Garden stage. ZI00’s Elvis Duran and the Morning Crew personally came onstage to introduce the night’s most-anticipated performance. “Years ago, there was a young girl in the audience watching the Z100 Jingle Ball [and] she told her mom she wanted to be a singer,” Duran said to the squealing concertgoers. “Three years ago, she opened up the show with her hit Just Dance. It gives me pleasure to say that a lifelong Z100 fan has now become one of the most important artists of our generation.” With the crowd chanting “Gaga,” the New York City native opened with Edge of Glory. But in true Lady Gaga fashion, she didn’t appear onstage right away. Instead, she emerged from a Christmas tree mid-song, decked out in a studded leather outfit. She then belted her way through “Bad Romance.” “When I was 11, I came to this very concert and told my mom I wanted to be a singer, and guys … here I am,” she said, launching into “Just Dance.” “Some people thought I was just going to be a one-hit wonder,” Gaga continued as she moved on to mega-hits “Poker Face,” “Telephone” and “Judas.” The pop diva then paid homage to the holidays with a naughty rendition of “White Christmas,” gyrating her way across a holiday-themed set, complete with antlers, Christmas trees and lights. Mother Monster danced through “Born This Way,” before closing out the show with her latest, the Fernando Garibay-produced “Marry the Night” , for which she channeled the video by changing into a a hospital gown and carting an IV stand onstage. As the song ended, fireworks went off and red confetti shot out all over the jubilant crowd. Jingle Ball 2011’s stellar lineup was more than just Gaga, of course. During a short break in the show, fans took to their phones and began tweeting furiously in anticipation of another act: Demi Lovato. Finally, after what seemed like years in tween time, Big Time Rush introduced the 19-year-old, who took the stage looking classy in an all-black gem-studded blazer. Lovato, joined by her backup dancers, opened with “All Night Long,” and followed up with her new single, Give Your Heart a Break , to the delight of screaming Lovatics. Demi turned serious, though, for her comeback ballad “Skyscraper,” and the whole room sang along. She closed out her set by ripping off her blazer, all the better to shimmy to and sing the finale, “I’m Broken.” “Thank you guys!” she told her adoring fans. “You all have been so amazing!” Turns out Kelly Clarkson, who took it back with her massive uptempo hit “Since You Been Gone,” is also a Lovatic. “I’ve been waiting for a long time to do a duet with Demi,” Kelly said. “Wow, she can sing her butt off!” she added as Demi returned for the classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Needless to say, the two power singers … killed it. (Lovato has long cited Clarkson as an inspiration.) Clarkson then switched gears, dipping into her latest album, Stronger , for the sassy “Mr. Know It All,” and chart-toppers like “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Gym Class Heroes opened with their staple “Cupid’s Chokehold,” but the hip-hop/rock band also rolled out numbers from their new album, The Papercut Chronicles. They said goodbye with frontman Travie McCoy rapping his solo hit “Billionaire,” as the crowd eagerly sang Bruno Mars’ hook. Reality star Khloe Kardashian was one of the night’s guest hosts, and she told MTV News she has “a passion for music.” Dressed in LMFAO-approved leopard tights, Kardashian introduced electro-pop duo, who were short one party-rocker. “SkyBlu couldn’t be here with us tonight because he hurt himself wiggling,” RedFoo explained. Although he was without his partner in crime, RedFoo held it down, kicking off with “Sorry for Party Rocking” and dancing with two giant plastic zebras in the background. Foo went on to perform “Shots Shots” and “I’m in Miami” (a New York version, of course). He finished up with explosive — there were fireworks — versions of the LMFAO hits “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It,” as fans wiggled in their seats. Youtube sensations Karmin also performed — but not onstage. They surprised everyone by rocking right in the crowd. Share your Jingle Ball concert reviews in the comments below! If you didn’t get a chance to catch any of Coldplay’s festival appearances earlier this year, singer Chris Martin promises that the new Xyloto songs will fit in with their soaring catalog, but might also feel a bit … different. “It’s definitely a schizophrenic album … it keeps changing sounds,” he told MTV News. “That’s why we called it such a strange thing, Mylo Xyloto . Because we felt like so many people have already made up their minds about us, both good and bad, that we can sort of start again from scratch and try and reflect all the music we listen to and we love.” And while you may not see album guest Rihanna hop up on stage with the band during the outing to sing “Princess of China”

Kanye Talks ‘Pursuit Of Awesomeness’ In Backstage Video

‘I wasn’t given this power for no reason,’ rapper says in behind-the-scenes video filmed on Watch the Throne Tour. By Rob Markman Kanye West Photo: Getty Images No one knew what to expect back in October when online entertainment company VoyR announced that it would be partnering with Jay-Z and Kanye West ‘s Watch the Throne Tour to give “access to exclusive, inspirational and shareable stories” with live webcasts. Would fans get sneak peeks backstage? Would part of the concert be streamed in real time? How much of Jay and ‘Ye would we actually see? There were quite a few questions. Now, almost two months later, VoyR drops its first behind-the-scenes video. Kanye narrates the clip, which was recorded at one of the Throne’s November shows at Madison Square Garden in New York. “I always joked that I was like — OK, I’m doing music, but there is a bigger plan for me at a certain point. I wasn’t given this power for no reason and now it’s starting to open up,” ‘Ye says at the start. Yeezy continues to wax poetic about his mission in life, concluding that his goal is to inspire future world leaders who will go on to pay homage at the rapper’s funeral when he dies. All the while, West’s voice-over is coupled with concert footage of him emerging onto the MSG stage atop a four-sided video cube. “I’m on a pursuit of awesomeness,” West continues. “Excellence is the bare minimum.” VoyR charges a fee that grants fans access to a number of different episodes, but in this first video we see the Chi-Town MC backstage getting dressed for the night’s show. While wearing a black shirt, with the same Givenchy designs that appear in the Watch the Throne album insert, Kanye straps a chunky gold bracelet to his wrist, adjusts his in-ear monitor and laces up his Air Yeezy sneakers as he gets ready to hit the stage. The video mostly focuses on the “All of the Lights” MC, and we hardly see Jay at all. Instead we see Kanye marching through the concert halls, greeting visitors like famed Roc-A-Fella engineer Young Guru and Wu-Tang Clansman Raekwon. Hov does show up in one scene, marveling over one young fan’s haircut. The preteen, who made his way backstage, has a WTT logo shaved into his head. He is all smiles as Jay talks to him with Kanye, Bronx, New York, rapper French Montana and Hot 97’s Angie Martinez looking on. “Oh, you outta here, told you,” Jay says, laughing. Kanye continues to narrate, talking about his legacy. “I wanna know when I’m gone that they’ll be 10 people that will go up and grab that mic,” he said about the impression he hopes to leave. “I wanna know that there are warriors now.” Related Photos Exclusive Photos Of The ‘Watch The Throne’ Recording Sessions Jay-Z And Kanye West ‘Watch The Throne’ Listening Related Artists Kanye West Jay-Z

Bow Wow may not be Lil Bow Wow anymore, but he’s in a Lil trouble with the federal government over some back taxes. Like more than 90 grand worth. A tax lien filed in Florida by the U.S. government says the rapper owes Uncle Sam $91,105.61 to be exact for unpaid taxes dating back to the year 2006. Bow Wow took to his blog to dispute the report of his financial troubles, calling it “not true,” and advising his fans not to believe celebrity gossip outlets. “We all know not to believe anything that the media writes or blogs,” Bow Wow wrote . “It’s their job to entertain the minds of the simple minded.” Deep . He urged fans to ignore the report and turn their attention to the release of his now delayed album Underrated . Gotta pay down those debts somehow! “Stay away from them damn blogs its bad for your health,” he then wrote. “Remember Ima always keep it 100 with yall and let yall know the real on anything I got going on even if its bad if it’s the truth I’ll own up to it.” It’s true. Meek Mill will also make an appearance on the show, airing Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Rob Markman Rick Ross Photo: Getty Images Rick Ross is back and the Maybach Music boss has much to celebrate. Trina stayed tight-lipped about the merger, but hopefully Ross can shed some light. “I have a few surprises,” Trina said on “RapFix Live.” “This album, I want to make it more about me. I’m not going to have a whole album full of features. I’m working with some really great producers and Ross, of course. He’s the structure and the leader for the album. I love Ross. He’s like my brother, so it’s really important for me that he understands where I’m at right now and to help make this album be as great as I want it to.” Ross has also been contributing to Meek Mill’s as-yet-untitled debut LP, so expect an album update from the Philadelphia flame spitter as well as info on his recently released “I’ma Boss (Remix),” featuring Lil Wayne, T.I., Rick Ross, Swizz Beatz, DJ Khaled and Birdman. Lady Gaga And Laurieann Gibson: The Way They Were

After meeting in 2007, creative director went on to put her stamp on many of the pop superstar’s most memorable creations. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images On Monday (November 14), Lady Gaga and Laurieann Gibson confirmed their split, ending a creative partnership that dated back to the beginning of the pop star’s career. Gibson first teamed up with Mother Monster in 2007 , when the choreographer helped her most famous Dream Warrior with a live routine for her Fame track “Boys Boys Boys.” The two ladies shared a similar background, both drawing inspiration from the singer’s hometown of New York City, where Gaibson had arrived many years before meeting Gaga, hoping to make it as a dancer. In August, Gibson explained to MTV News that Gaga’s Nick Knight-directed “Born This Way” video was meant to pay homage to their love for the city. “This was the place that we started. This was the place that birthed her. This was the place that birthed my dance,” Gibson told us. “New York just has something so real about birthing something specific.” In the years since they first hooked up, the two women have forged one of the most close-knit, high-profile relationships in pop. Gibson has had credits on nearly every Lady Gaga video released so far, including “Poker Face,” “Just Dance,” “Telephone,” “Alejandro,” and “Born This Way.” But she has also worked closely with the singer on her live performances and massive stage shows . Among members of Gaga’s elusive Haus of Gaga, Gibson is certainly one of the most public. Over the course of the past 12 months, the former “Fly Girl” rose to prominence thanks to her work as creative director for the superstar, starring in not one, but two, of her own reality shows: E!’s “The Dance Scene” and BET’s “Born to Dance.” And it was during this time that the duo showed the world what they could do as a pair, producing some of Gaga’s most talked-about creations, including the clips from the Born This Way album, which was released in May. “I woke up one night and I got it and I said, ‘I got it: We have to birth a new race ,’ ” she recalled to MTV News about the idea for the “BTW” clip. “As genius as [Gaga] is, she then begins to create all of these elements that make her Lady Gaga. When I saw the final edit, I, of course, was loving some stuff and then I was like, ‘But oh, here we go.’ It was brilliant. Nick is amazing.” While Gibson was outspoken when she disagreed about a creative decision the singer made, she seemed to be always by her side, working on projects like Gaga’s Google Chrome commercial , which again pays homage to the star’s Big Apple roots. The HBO special “Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden” highlighted Gibson’s work as creative director and earned Gaga five Emmy nominations. Laurieann also co-directed the “Judas” video , which she told us had left her satisfied. “I was able to sit in the director’s seat and fulfill our vision and see it all the way through. So at the end of the day, you saw how amazing she looks — beautiful — she’s dancing again,” Gibson said. “And it’s just great because I was able to produce the next level: who she is, how many levels she can go and the idea that this artist is a real artist and capable.” Gibson was also onboard for the “Yo
