One Direction Offer A Lesson In British Slang

In preparation for U.S. tour, fans might want to learn ‘bird’ and ‘sithee.’ By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images One Direction will soon be embarking on their first-ever U.S. headlining tour . The British imports will take their mop-top, sunny pop tunes all across our great land. Before they hit the road, MTV News caught up with the fivesome in New York City, where they performed on “Saturday Night Live.” The guys revealed some key British slang terms American girls might want to learn to impress them. To get you in-the-know before your next One Direction concert, the guys broke down key phrases to use in conversation: “Trousers” are pants, per the guys, and a “jumper” is a sweater, and therefore possibly a good thing to wear with trousers. Louis Tomlinson said “fit” is a key word to describe an attractive person, explaining, “If a girl’s fit, she’s hot.” One Directioners might use “fit” to describe the “blokes” in 1D: “He’s a nice bloke,” Liam Payne said of the term for a guy. On the other end of the spectrum, Harry Styles let us in on a word for a special lady and romantic interest. “Quite slangy,” Harry explained, “but if someone was your girlfriend, you’d be like, ‘That’s my bird.’ ” And, finally, “sithee” means “see ya” or “goodbye.” That will be perhaps the hardest thing a Directioner will say to one of the guys if they should meet them during their outing this year. The tour will kick off May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia, as part of a North American tour set to wrap up July 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with stops along the way including Chicago, New York, Atlanta and Las Vegas. They are also set to take the stage at New York’s famed Madison Square Garden on December 3. The guys’ debut album, Up All Night , which features their lead single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” is out now. Share your favorite British slang in the comments below! Swedish House Mafia’s Next Single Inspired By Australia

‘Our cameraman and one of the guys from management started to cry when they heard the song,’ Sebastian Ingrosso tells MTV News. By Akshay Bhansali Swedish House Mafia at Masquerade Motel Photo: Rukes.com Before headlining day one of Masquerade Motel Miami , Swedish House Mafia confirmed that they’re working on a follow-up single to “Greyhound.” In their three years recording together, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello have just five Swedish House Mafia singles under their belt (six if you count “Leave the World Behind,” their collaboration with Laidback Luke and Deborah Cox), so the very mention of a new SHM song is a highly anticipated event in dance-music culture. “We didn’t manage to finish that track,” Axwell revealed when we asked if the new song would make a debut at Masquerade Motel Miami. “We were trying.” “The only thing that we can say, actually,” Axwell continued, “is that we were at this amazing house in Sydney by the water, and we were trying to take in all the amazingness of Sydney. So we took out a couch … and sat in the garden with the ocean view there. And we were like, ‘OK, let’s make something that sounds how this looks.’ ” Fans of Swedish House Mafia were first clued in to some recording Down Under when the gents posted a clip online showing Ax, Seb and Steve at an Australian lab, making music and swimming in a pool with a scenic Sydney Harbour view. Fans should be tickled to know, according to the guys, that their next release seems like it will be equal parts beautiful and banging. “Our cameraman that has filmed for us and one of the guys from management started to cry when they heard the song,” Seb revealed. “So we’ll see!” Axwell said. “But it was amazing to sit there at a couch outside with our laptops and just looking out.” “That should be the new studio,” Angello chimed in. “We needed to do that for that track,” Seb said. “Because that track has been in demo state for a long time,” Ax said. “We’ve been really, like, ‘How can we finish this in the right way without making it too banging or too soft and keep all the lyrics?’ So we were on a couch on the beach finishing it. Almost.” No word yet on the new song’s official title or release date. What are you expecting from SHM’s next single? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Swedish House Mafia

Nicki Minaj Makes ‘Fearless’ Statement With Music

‘I don’t ask girls to wear pink hair; they just do it,’ Nicki Minaj tells MTV News of her growing popularity. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News ORLANDO, Florida — Who says divas have to be difficult? After her performance at the start of the NBA’s 2012 All-Star Game on Sunday, Nicki Minaj graciously invited MTV News into her dressing room before she even got a chance to catch her breath. Once inside, the reigning rap queen spoke on balancing her pop status with her hip-hop background and used her recent Grammy performance to contextualize things. “That’s just who I am. I was a theater major; I studied theater,” Nicki Minaj told MTV News. “It’s funny because, even with the Grammys, that wasn’t the first time I’ve done theater. Like ‘Moment 4 Life,’ I did a skit I was pretending to be an old lady, Martha, when I did ‘Right Thru Me,’ I did a skit. I always try to do that when I have the forum to do it.” Before she took the stage to perform “Roman Holiday” at the 2012 Grammy Awards ceremony, Nicki prefaced her stage show with the “Exorcism of Roman” mini-movie. Her recent theatrics, which have drawn a ton of criticism, aren’t a far cry from the skits that appeared in her “Moment 4 Life” and “Right Thru Me” videos. Nicki may have started out a rapper, but she has grown to be so much more. A number of her recently released songs, which are being used to set up her sophomore Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, have been pop affairs. From the RedOne-produced “Starships” to “Roman Holiday,” there will be songs that will exist outside of the canon of traditional hip-hop. However, Nicki’s recently released “Roman Reloaded” single featuring Lil Wayne proves that she can still spit bars with the best of them. (After all, she did rank #4 on MTV News’ “Hottest MCs in the Game” list.) Still, Nicki insists that she is merely being herself. “I guess I am pop culture just because what I’m doing seems to be popular. When people want to do what you’re doing, it’s kinda popular,” she reasoned. “I don’t ask girls to wear pink hair; they just do it. It’s not about black or white; I think it’s just a statement. It doesn’t matter which color you are; it’s just a statement of being fearless.” Being fearless is also about knowing when to cut an interview short. “OK, bye, y’all. Get out of my dressing room,” Nicki joked. What did you think of Nicki Minaj’s performance at the NBA All-Star Game? Leave your comment below! What Is Justin Bieber’s Top Moment?

As Bieber celebrates his 18th birthday, we’re counting down his 18 best moments so far. Check out #1! By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Valery Hache/ AFP/ Getty Images Moment by moment, we have finally arrived to Justin Bieber ‘s top milestone. This week, we kicked off a countdown of his 18 greatest moments , and having already made our way through most of the list , we have reflected on the singer’s incredible rise to fame through vintage videos and reliving some of the classic memories that have made Bieber the star he is today. What else made the list of top Bieber moments? Well, keep reading for the remainder of the list, including our pick for #1. 5. My World Goes on the Road Kicked off in June 2010 in Hartford, Connecticut ,Bieber took the hugely popular tour around the world. With plentiful stops, the spectacle was filled with smooth moves, catchy tunes and tons of love. For his Madison Square Garden show, Bieber brought out famous friends Miley Cyrus and Usher , and he filmed the performance for “Never Say Never.” He wrapped up the tour in October 2011 in Venezuela. 4. 2010 Video Music Awards Bieber went into the 2010 VMAs as one of the biggest pop stars in the world. He took home the Moonman for Best New Artist, got to hang with his pals like Drake , and performed “Baby” and “Somebody to Love” in a manner fit for past teen idols like the Beatles. “Wow,” he said when he took the stage to accept his prize. “This means a lot to me. Thank you to everybody here.” 3. Chopping Off His Hair February 22, 2011 is a day marked in history. It’s when Bieber debuted a shorter hairdo , lopping off his signature floppy style. Since then, Bieber has experimented with his hair, but no style has been quite as headline-making as that initial haircut. “We knew it was going to be a big deal,” his hairstylist Vanessa Price explained to MTV News at the time. “We knew it was going to shock fans, but we also knew it was going to be a change in terms of growing up. I think that’s something that people adjust to.” 2. 2009 VMAs At the 2009 VMAs , Bieber arrived at the show with Diddy, shouted out one lucky fan and instantly went from Internet star to real-world sensation thanks to the high-profile red carpet debut. And, in the end, he ended up being a part of VMA history. Shortly after the Kanye West/VMA outburst, Bieber and Nick star Miranda Cosgrove took the stage to announce Taylor Swift’s performance, moments after the rapper interrupted her, making him one of the folks involved in turning a negative into a positive. 1. His First YouTube Video Five years ago, under the moniker KidRauhl, a very, very, very young (OK, he was 13) Justin posted a YouTube video of himself singing Ne-Yo’s “So Sick.” Displaying his soulful chops and ear for pure pop melodies, it was the video that kicked off a phenomenon. The videos posted after that, where he covered tracks by everyone from Justin Timberlake to Chris Brown, and the frenzy they incited caught the eye of his now manager Scooter Braun, which led to a heated battle between Usher and Justin Timberlake to see who would sign the teen dream. Usher won and the rest is, as they say, history. Share your birthday wishes for Justin and weigh in on the top 18 moments on our Facebook page! Happy 18th birthday, Justin Bieber ! Now that we’ve counted down the superstar’s 18 greatest moments, stick with MTV News as we celebrate the milestone all day. Related Videos Happy Birthday, Justin Bieber! Stateside portion of first tour since Clarence Clemons’ death begins March 18 in Atlanta. By James Montgomery Bruce Springsteen Photo: Mike Coppola/Getty Images Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band had been teasing a lengthy run of U.S. shows in support of the upcoming Wrecking Ball album, and on Tuesday (January 24), they finally revealed the first leg of dates. Kicking off March 18 in Atlanta, the first stateside portion of the Wrecking Ball World Tour sees Bruce and the Band playing arenas in cities like Tampa, Boston, Philadelphia, East Rutherford, New Jersey — of course — New York, Detroit and Los Angeles, before coming to a close with a May 2 gig in Newark. Select dates go on sale as early as Friday. For more information, check out the Boss’s . The shows mark Springsteen’s first U.S. gigs since the death of founding E Street member Clarence Clemons last year. Much like the title of the tour implies, they’ll be playing songs from the upcoming Wrecking Ball album , which hits stores on March 6. Just last week, Springsteen premiered the first single off the album, a surging slice of Americana called “We Take Care of Our Own,” and early reports seem to indicate that the new disc may very well be a heavy, heady thing, featuring guests like Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello and Pearl Jam’s Matt Chamberlain, and tackling issues like economic injustice. In his first game of the season after being re-signed to the New Jersey Nets, Kris Humphries was loudly booed by the crowd at Madison Square Garden, their home arena.
