Jay-Z Investigated By NBA For Wildcats Postgame Visit

Minority owner of the New Jersey Nets met winning Kentucky players. By Alvin Blanco Jay-Z Photo: Rob Loud/ Getty Images Photos of Jay-Z taken with the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team after their win over North Carolina in the Regional Finals of the NCAA tournament on Sunday have drawn the wary eyes of the NBA. CBSSports.com reports that the NBA will be investigating Jay-Z’s postgame congratulatory visit to the Kentucky Wildcats locker room at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Such visits normally would be considered harmless, but Jay-Z is a minority owner of the New Jersey Nets, and contact between NBA personnel and potential NBA prospects is prohibited. Kentucky has at least two possible lottery picks in Brandon Knight and Terrence Jones, should they declare for the NBA draft. The photos and video began making the Internet rounds the day after the win, showing Jay-Z posing with players in the locker room. During a postgame interview, Kentucky player Darius Miller, who one of the photos is credited to, was asked about his reaction to seeing Jay-Z after the game. “It was crazy. I kind of had to do a double take,” Miller told Louisville’s Courier-Journal. “I didn’t expect that at all. I just had to get a picture with him.” Hova congratulating the Wildcats didn’t break any NCAA rules, however the hip-hop mogul might face a fine from the NBA, considering that Boston Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge was fined $30,000 for sitting next to Kevin Durant’s mother while he was still playing for the University of Texas in 2007. While the New Jersey Nets declined to comment, a spokesperson for the NBA confirmed to MTV News that the league is indeed investigating the matter. A message to Jay-Z’s representatives was not returned by press time. Sound off on this story in the comments below! Related Artists Jay-Z

The R.A. Dickey Gallery

Mets’ knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is 5-0, with a 2.82 ERA over six starts. But that isn’t what makes him awesome. Pitch Face is what makes him awesome. That’s really all the introduction you’re gonna need. Diamondbacks Lose Again: More Change On The Way?

The Diamondbacks lost to the Red Sox tonight, Boston completing the sweep of Arizona. That’s nothing new. In fact, it marked the visitors’ thirteenth consecutive defeat on the road – the last time they won away from Phoenix was exactly a month ago, beating the Marlins in Florida. Since Arizona came into being in 1998, there’s been only one longer streak by a National League club – Washington lost sixteen straight road games in 2008-09. It seems that the team is beginning a rebuilding process, with the trade to Oakland earlier this week of Conor Jackson, one of the longest-tenured Diamondbacks – only catcher Chris Snyder had been with the team longer. Dan Haren commented after the deal, “Nothing that happens from here on out would be a surprise to me… We understand that things have to change.” General Manager Josh Byrnes seems to agree, saying… “We aren’t where we need to be in the standings and as far as sort of the things we’d like to do to adjust the roster, there’s also payroll considerations as we try to sort of get ready for next year.” The word around baseball is that Kelly Johnson is perhaps the next Diamondback to be traded. He has been performing brilliantly this year, and could well be the team’s lone representative at the All-Star Game. This would encourage the team to sell high, and with Johnson’s club-friendly contract, as well as him being under team control for 2011 (his third arbitration year), there would seem to be potential for a decent haul. However, it might not stop there, with the club willing to listen to offers for almost anyone currently on the roster. The only “untouchables” would appear to be third-baseman Mark Reynolds, right-fielder Justin Upton and starting pitcher Ian Kennedy, who has an ERA+ of 127 in his first full season, and could quite possibly be the best of the chips traded between Arizona, Detroit and the Yankees over the winter. Otherwise, after finishing last in the NL West in 2009, and looking likely to do so again this season, the Diamondbacks appear ready to rip it up and start again, less than three years after reaching the National League Championship Series.

PG Wall works out for Wizards (AP)

The seemingly inevitable selection of John Wall as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft came to bit closer to fruition Thursday when the Kentucky point guard worked out for the Washington Wizards. Wall showed his dribble-drive ability with both hands, hit pull-up jumpers and threw down dunks during a 30-minute session run by coach Flip Saunders and observed by general manager Ernie Grunfeld and new…

Borussia Dortmund ban the World Cup vuvuzelas

• ‘Our fans don’t want to have these trumpets’, says Watzke • ‘Horrid things will be forbidden from the Westfalenstadion’ The 2010 World Cup atmosphere will not be replicated in the Westfalenstadion next season after Borussia Dortmund banned vuvuzela horns from the arena. The sound of vuvuzelas has accompanied each match at the World Cup so far with opinion divided about their impact on the experience for fans and television viewers. The horns have already been banned from the majority of public events in Germany due to the alleged health risks related to the droning sound they produce, and Dortmund have become the first Bundesliga club to officially outlaw them. “Our fans don’t want to have these trumpets,” said Dortmund’s general manager, Hans-Joachim Watzke. “It is nerve-racking and completely drowns out any chanting.” The Westfalenstadion is the largest arena in Germany with a capacity of over 81,000 and is generally regarded as having the best atmosphere in the Bundesliga. And Watzke confirmed the law against their use in the stadium would be firmly enforced in a bid to maintain the venue’s reputation. “We have decided as a work group at Borussia Dortmund that these horrid things will be forbidden from the Westfalenstadion,” he said. “Anybody who does not abide by this will face the consequences.” Vuvuzelas Borussia Dortmund Bundesliga European football guardian.co.uk

Topeka Unofficially Renamed "Google, Kan."

Topeka's mayor says the city shall temporarily be referred to as “Google, Kansas – the capital city of fiber optics,” in an effort to persuade the Internet giant to test an ultra-fast connection in the state capital. Mayor Bill Bunten issued the proclamation Monday after no city council members objected to the month-long change. Bunten says the proclamation is mainly for fun, but that he hopes it will set Topeka apart from other cities vying for Google's fiber optics experiment, including Grand Rapids, Mich., and Baton Rouge, La. City attorney Jackie Williams says Topeka cannot legally be temporarily renamed, but that the proclamation asking for it to be referred to as “Google” was OK. Google didn't immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that a local group named Think Big Topeka initiated a campaign last month to gain support for Google's experimental fiber network to Kansas' capital. According to Jim Ogle, general manager of CBS Affiliate WIBW, Topeka's mayor in 1998, Joan Wagnon, had similarly issued a proclamation temporarily changing the name of the city to “ToPikachu,” in honor of Pokemon. http://www.wbbm780.com/Topeka-Unofficially-Renamed–Google–Kan–/6479262 added by: TravG73

NPR: Will legalizing Pot solve California’s budget woes?

Listen to the story at link – 4:14 By at least one estimate, California's largest cash crop is not milk, cheese, or oranges, it's marijuana. Some advocates say legalizing pot — and taxing it — could be a way out of the state's financial woes, and they recently secured enough signatures for a ballot initiative to do just that. But how much revenue a legal pot industry generates would depend on how prices are set. Transcript: Heres NPRs David Kestenbaum with our Planet Money team. DAVID KESTENBAUM: Right now, the price of marijuana varies a lot. The government actually studies these things. Researchers go into holding cells or if people have been arrested and asked questions like what do you pay for marijuana? According to a report published in 2004, pot in some parts of the country can cost two or three times as much as in another. Ms. ROSALIE LICCARDO PACULA (Acting Director, RAND Health; Co-Director, RAND Drug Policy Research Center): If youre close to the Canadian border and can get, you know, Canadian bud thats higher quality than ditch weed from Mexico. KESTENBAUM: Rosalie Liccardo Pacula is co-director of RANDs Drug Policy Research Center. She says some of the differences in price are just differences in quality. Ms. PACULA: Its just like wine. Theres really, really good wine and theres mediocre wine. KESTENBAUM: According to that report, hydroponically grown weed in New York can go for $1,000 an ounce. The marijuana market is a real challenge for economists to understand. Its not a black market anymore, and its not quite an open market either. Ms. PACULA: Yeah, we call it a gray market. (Soundbite of laughter) KESTENBAUM: Over a dozen states now allow marijuana for medical purposes. But federal laws still ban it. And strange things can happen when a commodity crosses that border from illegal to legal. For instance, when states began passing medical marijuana laws, Pacula assumed the price for pot would drop because now if youre growing the stuff, you didnt have to worry so much about being busted, you wouldnt need lawyers, guns, cars with secret compartments for smuggling. But this question has been studied and it looks like the opposite happened. The price of marijuana actually went up. Pacula thinks the big reason is that when pot became legal for medical purposes, more people started using it. Increased demand, more people wanting something, tends to push prices up. Kevin Johnson is the general manager of a medical marijuana dispensary in San Francisco called, Grassroots. The place is decorated like a turn-of-the-century saloon. And it does seem like more people are using marijuana these days to treat all kinds of things like insomnia. Mr. KEVIN JOHNSON (General Manager, Grassroots): Insomnia, I recommend something heavier. Any of the purple varietals tend to work very well for that, something like Purple Urkle or Granddaddy Purple or a Purple Kush. Those tend to be much dopier and sleepier. KESTENBAUM: Now, in a normal economic market, when demand goes up, suppliers -in this case pot growers – would just grow more Purple Kush, and prices would come back down. But Johnson says the marijuana market is still quirky. Before running the marijuana club, he used to run a bar, which he says was completely different. Mr. JOHNSON: When you, you know, make an order for your suppliers, for you booze, you know, its going to be delivered on time and you can get whatever Budweiser or Jameson that you need for that week. Whereas in this industry, youd never know when people are going to harvest, sometimes theyll just disappear. You dont know if they just gave up growing or they went on vacation. KESTENBAUM: If marijuana were completely legal, big corporations might start growing pot super efficiently. And people think the price could come down by at least half. After all, pot is just a plant not that different from growing tomatoes. And price is important because the cheaper pot is, the more people will use it. And whenever you think about more people smoking pot, that could mean more potential revenue from the tax. California has estimated that the tax could bring in $1.4 billion in revenue a year, though some economists think that number is high. A few weeks ago, supporters have legalization and taxation in California turned in enough signatures to put the question on the state ballot in November. http://media.2news.tv/images/0802027_marijuana.jpg added by: samantha420

Weatherman Reports Nine Inches of Snow, Self

Massachusetts meteorologist Pete Bouchard raised some eyebrows last week while giving viewers a rundown on snowfall totals in various Bay State municipalities. “In Princeton, we picked up 9 inches of snow, Billerica had 7,” he began. “The biggest amount that I could find … almost as big as me,” Bouchard said as he stepped closer to the camera, shifting his eyes sideways, “About nine 9 inches.” Uhhhh …
