The original American Idol took the stage with a sexier look than we’re used to seeing, making her performance of “Dark Side” even more memorable. One-time Rutgers student Dharun Ravi was sentenced Monday to 30 days in jail for his role in the suicide of his former roommate, Tyler Clementi. Ravi was found guilty of invasion of privacy and hate crimes in March. The 20-year-old did not speak at his sentencing this morning. He will begin serving jail time May 31. Ravi cried as his mother spoke in court. “The media was ripping him apart with their misleading facts … He was absolutely devastated and broken into pieces,” Sabitha Ravi pleaded. “I do not believe he hated Tyler Clementi,” Judge Glenn Berman told the packed courtroom in announcing his decision. “He had no reason to.” “But, I do believe he acted out of colossal insensitivity.” Dharun Ravi was convicted of bias intimidation, witness tampering, hindering arrest and numerous other charges in connection with the case. This all stemmed from his role in using a webcam to observe Clementi’s date with a man in their dorm room in 2010, then Tweeting about it. Ravi (above, left) Tweeted about what he’d witnessed and invited others to watch Clementi (above, right) make out with his male love interest. That man’s name has not been revealed. Prosecutors said Ravi was motivated by a hatred. Ravi consistently has denied hatred of gays . In any case, Tyler Clementi killed himself. He jumped off the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22, 2010, after leaving a note on Facebook reading, “Jumping off the gw bridge. Sorry.” He was 18. In the days leading up to his sentencing, several prominent gay activists made public pleas for Ravi not to be sent to prison, reports ABC News. But the man captured on the webcam with Tyler Clementi did not agree. His attorney, Richard Pompelio, read his statement in court Monday. It said, “While I bear no anger towards Mr. Ravi, after much thought and many sleepless nights, I must say that Mr. Ravi should serve some type of confinement so that he can reflect on the serious harm he has caused.” “I do not believe that he has taken responsibility for his conduct, and to this day he seems to blame me for the actions he took.” Tyler’s father, Joseph Clementi, also said of Ravi: “He had no call to do what he did. Tyler never did anything to Mr. Ravi to cause him harm.” Ravi’s actions, said Joseph Clementi, were purely as a result of his seeing Tyler “as someone not deserving basic human decency and respect.” “All because my son was different from him [and] because he was gay.” In her own message, Jane Clementi, Tyler’s mom, called Ravi’s actions “mean-spirited, they are evil and, most important, they are against the law.” Before trial, Ravi had rejected a plea deal that would have placed him on probation and required community service – and spared him any time behind bars or the threat of deportation to his native India. Alan Dershowitz Says George Zimmerman Had A Right To Kill Trayvon Martin A medical report by George Zimmerman’s doctor has disclosed that Zimmerman had a fractured nose, two black eyes, two lacerations on the back of his head and a back injury on the day after the fatal shooting. If this evidence turns out to be valid, the prosecutor will have no choice but to drop the second-degree murder charge against Zimmerman — if she wants to act ethically, lawfully and professionally. There is, of course, no assurance that the special prosecutor handling the case, State Attorney Angela Corey, will do the right thing. Because until now, her actions have been anything but ethical, lawful and professional. She was aware when she submitted an affidavit that it did not contain the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. She deliberately withheld evidence that supported Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense. The New York Times has reported that the police had “a full face picture” of Zimmerman, before paramedics treated him, that showed “a bloodied nose.” The prosecutor also had photographic evidence of bruises to the back of his head. But none of this was included in any affidavit. Now there is much more extensive medical evidence that would tend to support Zimmerman’s version of events. This version, if true, would establish self-defense even if Zimmerman had improperly followed, harassed and provoked Martin. A defendant, under Florida law, loses his “stand your ground” defense if he provoked the encounter — but he retains traditional self-defense if he reasonably believed his life was in danger and his only recourse was to employ deadly force. Thus, if Zimmerman verbally provoked Martin, but Martin then got on top of Zimmerman and banged his head into the ground, broke his nose, bloodied his eyes and persisted in attacking Zimmerman — and if Zimmerman couldn’t protect himself from further attack except by shooting Martin — he would have the right to do that. (The prosecution has already admitted that it has no evidence that Zimmerman started the actual fight.) Wish we could say we are surprised, but we already know that there are a bunch of people that think that it’s cool for some scary-a$$ 28 year-old man to shoot a 17 year-old. This “teacher” looks freaky, but now has been captured and put on blast: A California high school teacher is under investigation after her arrest on charges that she allegedly had sex with a student. Megan Denman, 29, a social sciences teacher at Fresno’s Hoover High School, was arrested Monday on one count of sex with a minor and two counts of oral copulation with a person under 18, according to the Fresno Police Department and the Fresno United School District. The investigation is ongoing, and no evidence has emerged that other students were involved or that any illegal activity took place on school property. Denman was released from Fresno County Jail Tuesday evening, according to ABC News affiliate KFSN. “As we all know, there have been incidents throughout the state of teachers taking advantage of the student-teacher relationship,” said Fresno Unified Superintendant Michael Hanson said in a news release. “Unfortunately, we have learned of an alleged inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student in our own district. Words cannot describe my deep disappointment in this alleged breach of teacher-student relationship. ” Denman has been placed on paid administrative leave. Turn the page for the “Freaky” video.
