NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders was honored by his former team, the Atlanta Falcons, during halftime of yesterday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Deion was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio in August, but he chose to accept his Hall of Fame ring in the city that he says he never wanted to leave. Deion won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys and played for the Redskins, Ravens and 49ers after being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons. His flashy personality earned him the nickname “Prime Time” and endured him to entertainers and rappers alike. Lil Wayne was at the Georgia Dome ceremony and Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube both attended Deion’s Hall of Fame induction in Ohio. Hindsight being 20-20, Oscar winner Hilary Swank says she probably should have negged an invite top the birthday party for the President of Chechnya last week. You know, with the dude being accused of torturing and killing people and stuff. Swank, Jean Claude Van Damme and others attended a concert in Chechnya for president Ramzan Kadyrov on October 5, to the dismay of human rights groups. Hilary Swank Greets President of Chechnya “I deeply regret attending this event. If I had a full understanding of what this event was apparently intended to be, I would never have gone,” said Swank. The actress says at the time she accepted the invitation to the concert, she had no idea the event was intended to honor Ramzan Kadyrov personally. Swank gave a speech at the event, however, and even wished him a happy birthday. Asked how she knows that, she replied, “I read … I do my research.” Kadyrov has been accused of torturing and murdering his political rivals, though Kadyrov claims that’s all lies, made up by opponents to make him look bad. Mission accomplished in that case.

Troy Davis was laid to rest on Saturday (October 1st) at Jonesville Baptist Church in his hometown of Savannah, GA. Over 1,000 attended his funeral, including NAACP National President Ben Jealous, comedian and activist Dick Gregory and gospel artist Deitrick Haddon. Rev. Raphael Warnock of Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church also spoke during the service. Troy Davis funeral is being held today: A funeral service is set for Saturday morning for Troy Davis, a convicted cop killer who was executed despite pleas by many that he was actually innocent. The funeral service at Jonesville Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia, is being billed by organizers as a celebration of Davis’ life. Ministers, activists and NAACP President Ben Jealous are among those scheduled to speak at the event. The event is open to the public. Davis was put to death by lethal injection last week for the 1989 killing of an off-duty police officer in Savannah. His case had drawn international attention because of the many critics who thought Davis was innocent. The case had been battled in many courtrooms before his execution. A jury and several judges on appeal determined that Davis killed Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989. Spencer Lawton, Davis’ prosecutor, has said the case withstood every legal challenge but couldn’t win the battle of public opinion. Former President Jimmy Carter, who along with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Pope Benedict XVI was among the most influential voices calling for clemency, said as much in his statement after Davis’ lethal injection. “If one of our fellow citizens can be executed with so much doubt surrounding his guilt, then the death penalty system in our country is unjust and outdated. A Georgia middle school adjusted its lessons after a father complained that his daughter’s homework assignment promoted Shariah law. According to the Marietta Daily Journal , the assignment was supposed to teach students at Campbell Middle School about the pros and cons of school uniforms. Troy Davis was executed last night (September 22nd) in Jackson, Georgia for being convicted of killing an off-duty Savannah police officer, and several celebrities reacted strongly via Twitter. His case received international attention after an informer’s testimony that helped convict him turned out to be false, and several witnesses recanted. Davis was supposed to die by lethal injection last night at 7 pm, but it was delayed as the Supreme Court reviewed his case. His appeal for a reprieve was denied, and Davis was pronounced dead at 11:08 pm. Davis was 42. Davis’ lawyer stated, “Tonight the state of Georgia legally lynched an innocent man. Tonight I witnessed something tragic.” Many others agree and call Davis’ execution a miscarriage of justice.
