When you’re not going to win on points, you may as well try to shoot the moon — that seems to be the thought process behind Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance , the sequel to Marvel’s 2007 Ghost Rider . Realizing that their stunt rider who turns into a flaming skeleton-monster character and their star who turns in what are less performances than performance art were unlikely to result in a film that could be thought of as good in any traditional sense, the studios have aimed instead to make something that embraces its own lunacy. To oversee this endeavor, they brought in Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the directing duo behind the Red Bulled-out, always in motion Crank films, who ignore a good portion of what happened in the first Ghost Rider , plant their tongues firmly in cheek and loose Nicolas Cage to do his strangest. It’s not as wild or as fun as it may sound (or that it needs to be to hit the midnight-movie sweet spot for which it aims), but it’s a minor improvement on the unintentional silliness of the initial installment. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance moves the action to Eastern Europe, where sinister forces are trying to capture 13-year-old Danny (Fergus Riordan) for use in the fulfillment of a doomy prophecy. The kid and his mother Nadya ( The American ‘s Violante Placido) have been in hiding with the first of two sects of tough monks (the first is overseen by Anthony Head, the second by Christopher Lambert), until they’re chased down by a group of mercenaries led by her ex, Carrigan (Johnny Whitworth) who’ve been hired to bring the boy to become the new vessel for Roarke (Ciarán Hinds), the living embodiment of Satan (look, I don’t make this stuff up). An alcoholic French priest (Idris Elba) recruits Johnny Blaze (Cage) to help save the pair using his Ghost Riderly powers with the promise of curing him of the curse, though Blaze fears he won’t be able to control the demon that possesses him enough to not also devour the people he’s trying to save. Cage plays Blaze as a tweaker, a twitchy, shaky mess who pops skull eye whenever he struggles to control his inner monster. It’s a performance that starts off as awkward but gradually builds to new arias of weird; threatening a flunky from whom he’s trying to get information, he notes that the Rider is “scraping at the door! He’s SCRAPING AT THE DOOR! If you don’t TELL me what he needs to KNOW, I’m going to let him oooooooooout!” Cage jerks and flinches and laughs maniacally — in one of the more memorable shots, a camera affixed to the front of his motorcycle holds on him as he accelerates, cackling, through town, gaping black eye sockets warping his face and then getting tamped down. Neveldine/Taylor have apparently gotten Cage to also play the transformed Rider this time around, an addition that comes through in the demon’s odd head tilts and dancey fits. Cage is given a run for his money by Elba (who uses his character’s accent as one might use a swirling cape) and Hinds, who have a ham-off in their respective roles, though Cage emerges triumphant just from the sheer effort he puts into the role. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance scores some deliberate laughs — the Rider spins inexplicably in mid-air after getting shot by a bunker buster, a character who can make things decay with his touch finds the only thing that doesn’t crumble in his hands before he eats it is a Twinkie, and at long last the question of what happens when the Ghost Rider needs to pee is answers (it’s “like a flamethrower”) — but the smugness of the film grows wearying long before the end. Just because the people on and behind the camera are willing to acknowledge what we’re watching is ridiculous crap doesn’t really change the fact that, well, it is. For filmmakers as talented as Neveldine/Taylor are (and they are, as the exhilarating freedom of their camerawork attests), it’s a letdown, evidence that all the air quotes in the world won’t make your end project any better if there’s nothing sincerely good thrown in there as well. ‘Ghost Protocol’ star tells MTV News he’ll continue the series, ‘If I can make ’em at a level I want to make ’em.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz MTV News’ Josh Horowitz and Tom Cruise Photo: MTV News The last time we wanted to talk to Tom Cruise , we had to get on a plane, fly 12 hours across the Atlantic, and practically scale the 2,716-foot Burj Khalifa in Dubai . It was easier this time, as the New York City premiere for Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” took place at the Ziegfeld Theatre, just a few blocks away from MTV News’ Times Square headquarters. The Big Apple opening brought out an array of Hollywood talent in addition to Cruise: wife Katie Holmes, co-stars Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg, plus Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Queen Latifah, Robin Thicke, Jerry Ferrara and Adam Shankman. Oh, and a couple thousand fans screaming so loud for Cruise you’d have thought they were hanging by a shoelace from the top of the Burj Khalifa. In defense of these fans, it was freaking Tom Cruise they were cheering for, and it’s been more than five years since the last “Mission” film. And if he keeps delivering franchise installments the way he wants, these premieres might happen many more times in the future. “If I can make ’em at a level I want to make ’em,” Cruise told MTV News of continuing the series. “Thing is, I’ve never wanted to compromise. If we can figure that out, I love making them. As a producer, they’re a lot of fun. As an actor, they’re really a blast and challenging.” What it comes down to for Cruise is a deep love of the source material: the ’60s-era TV series starring Peter Graves, Martin Landau and others. “I just remember watching it at home on television. I loved the music and the whole thing with the gadgets and the team and the places they would go to. It was kind of a family event for us. When I went to Paramount the first time to produce it, they weren’t really turning TV series into movies, but I was pretty excited about it. To be today at number four is pretty cool.” Are you excited for the latest “Mission” movie? Tell us in the comments! Keeping with the trend of bringing movies to the stage , London’s musical adaptation of Ghost — the embarrassingly awesome ’80s classic featuring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg and the most erotic pottery wheel scene in the history of cinema — will hit Broadway this spring. Aussie twins tell MTV News they haven’t strayed from dance music roots in spite of ‘amazing’ Femme Fatale Tour experience. By Akshay Bhansali Nervo Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images With Britney Spears ‘ flashy Femme Fatale Tour closing out its remaining North American dates later this month, it’s fair to say that many of Ms. Spears’ concert-going fans have gotten to know Olivia and Miriam Nervo pretty well. In fact, when Brit first announced her Femme Fatale lineup back in April, promising on her website, “Nervo will get everyone on the dancefloor,” dance music fans were ecstatic about the inclusion of the DJ/producer twins whose writing credits include a song for Spears and David Guetta and Kelly Rowland’s “When Love Takes Over.” MTV News recently caught up with the Australian sisters (and former models), and they told us that bussing across the States and sharing the stage with Nicki Minaj, Jessie and the Toy Boys, and Brit herself, has been a stellar opportunity. “We’ve definitely seen both the girls, [Britney and Nicki], and we interact with them,” Miriam, a.k.a. Mim, told us. “You are traveling to each city and you see the same people every day and it really becomes a family. So it’s been an amazing experience.” “It’s an amazing show,” Liv added. “The girls, the lineup really works well together. You’ve got Britney, who I think is looking the best she’s looked in a really long time and who really gives it her all on this tour. And then you’ve got Nicki, who definitely brings her edge to it. I’d never seen Nicki live, and I’m just so blown away. The girl can sing, rap — total respect to her!” As the Femme Fatale Tour winds down Stateside before heading to Europe, Nervo are now looking to expand the fanbase they’ve built in the U.S. But while Liv and Mim have been a part of what might be considered the mother of all pop music tours, the duo insist that they intend to remain true to their dance music and DJ roots. “When we signed the record deal, it was really important to us that we could take our DJing seriously and release club records,” Liv explained of their Astralwerks label. “Yeah, we want to be DJ artists,” Mim added. “That’s what we love so, luckily, we can release some club records alongside our Astralwerks album,” Liv said. “It just so happens that the Astralwerks single that we’re coming out with is with two major club guys: Afrojack and Steve Aoki . It’s called ‘We’re All No One.’ We love it!” While Liv and Mim do the singing on “No One,” the beats are delivered by hard-hitting EDM producer Aoki and David Guetta prot
