Adele Makes It Two In A Row Atop Billboard 200

Former Floetry member Marsha Ambrosius lands at #2 with solo debut. By Gil Kaufman Adele’s 21 Photo: Columbia Records Cracking the American market has always been a challenge for British acts, but U.K. soul singer Adele is making it look easy. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, sales were down 52 percent, but that was still enough to beat out the #2 album, the solo debut by former Floetry member Marsha Ambrosius , Late Nights & Early Mornings, which had a good showing thanks to 96,000 units moved. The only other newcomers in the top 10 are the latest from Irish rockers Dropkick Murphys , Going Out in Style, which comes in at #6 (43,000), and Staind singer Aaron Lewis ‘ solo effort, Town Line, which is just behind at #7 (38,000). The latest sales totals for Mumford make them the first English band since 2009 (Coldplay, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends ) to sell 1 million copies of an album in both the U.K. and U.S. One of the most notable chart climbs belongs to the left-for-dead soundtrack to the Christina Aguilera/ Cher big-screen flop “Burlesque,” which rockets up 122 spots in the wake of Aguilera’s arrest for public intoxication , the movie’s release on DVD and the announcement that Aguilera will join the judging panel of “The Voice.” Also getting a boost following its Oscar win is the soundtrack to “The Social Network” by Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross , which climbs 66 slots to #59 (9,000). Further down the line, Different Gear, Still Speeding, the debut from former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher’s new band, Beady Eye , lands at #31 on modest sales of 13,000, and Swedish singer Lykke Li ‘s second album, Wounded Rhymes, debuts at #36 (12,000). Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Landslide’: Story Behind Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘Glee’ Cover

Holly Holliday revisited the classic made famous by Stevie Nicks on latest episode. By Aly Semigran Gwenyth Paltrow on “Glee” Tuesday Photo: FOX Gwyneth Paltrow is back, Gleeks, and she’s brought the legendary Stevie Nicks with her. After weeks of waiting, the Academy Award-winning actress, who has more recently been spending her time performing onstage at various awards shows, including the Oscars and the Grammys , finally returned to reprise her “Glee” character, flighty substitute teacher Holly Holliday. During her turn on Tuesday night’s (March 8) episode, titled “Sexy,” Paltrow, who made a lasting impression last time around thanks to her giddy (and squeaky-clean) take on Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You,” took on an entirely different sound when she sang the moving Fleetwood Mac classic “Landslide.” Accompanied by twangy guitars and a banjo, Paltrow drew on her country music chops (heard most recently in her 2010 drama “Country Strong”) as she covered the timeless tune. But even before getting the “Glee”/Gwyneth treatment, “Landslide,” written by Nicks, has long been considered a treasure of the Fleetwood Mac catalog. In 1973, 25-year-old Nicks penned the song during a stay in the snowy mountains of Colorado. Although there have been various theories regarding who — or what — the song is about, the singer set the record straight during a visit to VH1’s “Storytellers” in 1998. “Everybody, everybody seems to think that I wrote this song about them — everybody in my family, all my friends, everybody,” Nicks said on the show. “And my Dad, my Dad did have something to do with it, but he absolutely thinks that he was the whole, complete reason that it was ever written.” She went on to explain just how the song came to be, “[Bandmate] Lindsey [Buckingham] and I went up to Aspen and we went to somebody’s incredible house and they had a piano and I had my guitar with me and I went in their living room, looking out over the incredible Aspen sky and I wrote “Landslide.” The song, which includes such lyrics as “I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills/ ‘Till the landslide brought me down,” would become a turning point in the careers of Nicks and collaborator Buckingham, who was also her boyfriend at the time. As she told the “Storytellers” audience, “Three months later Mick Fleetwood called on New Year’s Eve 1974 and asked us to join Fleetwood Mac.” “Landslide” was initially released on Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled 1975 album, but it wasn’t actually released as a single (despite being a fan favorite) until 1998, when a live version of the song appeared on the Fleetwood album The Dance and hit airwaves. It peaked at #10 on Billboard ‘s adult contemporary chart and hit #51 on the Hot 100 that year. The sentimental and deeply personal song, with its simple, yet effective guitar chords and lyrics like “Well, I’ve been afraid of changing/ ‘Cause I’ve built my life around you” found its way into the hearts and onto the records of other inspired artists, most notably the Smashing Pumpkins and the Dixie Chicks. The Smashing Pumpkins released their version of “Landslide” on their 1994 B-sides album, Pisces Iscariot. The cover went on to be one of the rock band’s most-beloved tracks and even had the approval of Nicks herself. As she told fans during a 1998 online chat with SonicNet, “There’s nothing more pleasing to a songwriter than [someone else] doing one of their songs.”[‘Landslide’] also led me to being friends with Billy [Corgan] and the possibility that we’ll work together,” she said of the Smashing Pumpkins frontman. “Over this song, there’s been this incredible connection … he reached out … I believe that my poetry is really meant for everyone, no matter what age.” Nearly 10 years later, chart-topping country trio the Dixie Chicks created their own rendition of “Landslide.” Released on their 2002 album, Home, the trio’s cover also became a favorite among fans. With its debut on Glee, “Landslide,” proves that it continues to be a song that speaks to many generations, moving listeners years after Nicks first shared the song with the world more than 35 years ago. ‘Take Me Home Tonight’ Stars Teach The Kids About The ’80s

Anna Faris thinks of ‘big bangs, shoulder pads and jelly shoes’ when she looks back at the decade. By Kara Warner Anna Faris in “Take Me Home Tonight” Photo: Relativity Media In addition to being an entertaining and raunchy romantic comedy, “Take Me Home Tonight,” which features the acting and comedic talents of Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer and Dan Fogler, is also a cinematic homage to the 1980s. When MTV News caught up with the cast, we asked them to explain to the younger generations what the ’80s were all about — check out the embedded video to really get a feel for their trip down memory lane. “It’s like ‘Glee,’ ” Faris said with a laugh. “Is it like ‘Glee’?” Fogler questioned his co-star. “I don’t know,” she said, second-guessing herself. “How would you describe that decade to them?” Fogler followed up, taking over the interviewer job. “It was a time when the music was so influential and the style, it was so specific to the ’80s,” Faris explained. “You know, the big bangs and the shoulder pads and the jelly shoes.” “It’s in your face!” Fogler interjected. “No one really apologized for what they were wearing or doing.” Faris agreed: “Yeah, women wore a lot of super high-waisted bikinis — which men, I think, still kind of like.” “They do, because you saw more of the pelvis than you normally would,” Fogler explained, adding that the trend should make a comeback. Grace and Palmer took a different track in describing the ’80s. Grace chose to call out several famous music videos from our MTV archives in order to “describe” what was happening during the decade. “Let’s play a couple of [music videos] right now,” Grace instructed, proceeding to name his favorite ’80s artists and their hit songs. “Duran Duran, ‘Girls on Film’ — go! OK, ‘Hungry Like the Wolf,’ go to that video,” he said. “That is the opening-credit scene [for ‘Take Me Home Tonight’]. OK, now we are back. Now, do ‘Video Killed the Radio Star,’ ” he said. “The first video ever played on MTV. This video was going on when I was watching MTV.” “He’s good!” Palmer added, not able to comment properly on the happenings back in the day, since she was born in 1986. What are your favorite ’80s videos or trends? Tell us in the comments! ‘Glee’ Original Songs Slated For March Episode Hit The Net

Ryan Seacrest previewed soon-to-be ‘Gleek anthem’ ‘Loser Like Me’ and ‘Get It Right’ on his radio show. By Aly Semigran The cast of “Glee” Photo: FOX During the February 15 episode of “Glee” (titled ” Silly Love Songs “), Lea Michele’s character, Rachel, not-so-subtly foreshadowed the arrival of original songs on the show. But while new tunes “Loser Like Me” and “Get It Right” won’t appear on the hit series until March 15, Gleeks got a first listen on Friday morning (February 25). The two new original “Glee” tracks debuted on “On Air With Ryan Seacrest.” Ryan also tweeted out the information, posting on his page, “Attn Gleeks! Here’s the world premiere of #Glee’s first ever original songs ‘Loser Like Me’ & ‘Get It Right’: http://bit.ly/i5pNJv.” “Loser” features all of the New Directions members, led by Michele and Cory Monteith. The peppy pop ditty features lyrics keeping in tune with the themes of the show. After the opening guitar riffs, Michele croons, “Yeah, you may think that I’m a zero/ But hey, everyone you wanna be/ Probably started off like me/ You may say that I’m a freak show/ But hey, give it just a little time/ I bet you’re gonna change your mind.” Monteith later comes in with similar “we’ll show you” lyrics: “Pushed me up against the locker/ But hey, all I do is shake it off/ I’ll get you back when I’m your boss.” The rest of their castmates join them for the chorus, singing, “You wanna be/ You wanna be/ A loser like me.” Earlier this week, “Glee” music producer Adam Anders — the pair penned the numbers along with pop music powerhouse Max Martin — described “Loser” to Entertainment Weekly as a “Gleek anthem. It’s a very uptempo, kind-of-summery hit.” The Michele solo “Get It Right” was inspired by “Lea’s story line,” Anders told EW. In its opening moments, the Michele ballad sounds reminiscent of the Britney Spears hit “Everytime” thanks to its fluttering piano and breathy vocals, but comes into its own as it builds. The Golden Globe-nominated star cries in the chorus, “What can you do/ When your good isn’t good enough/ And all that you touch tumbles down/ ‘Cause my best intentions keep making a mess of things/ I just want to fix it somehow/ But how many times will it take for me to get it right?” Both “Loser Like Me” and “Get It Right” will appear on the album “Glee: The Music, Volume 5,” which will also feature season-two covers like Michele’s take on Katy Perry’s “Firework” and guest star Gwyneth Paltrow’s rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.” The fifth installment is due on March 8.
