Kanye West Tops Billboard Chart With My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Nicki Minaj a strong #2 with her debut, Pink Friday. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Ben Hider/Getty Images It’s an understatement to say that Kanye West is on a roll. As predicted, ‘Ye’s fifth album, the hotly anticipated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , will easily top the Billboard 200 albums chart next week, after selling a robust 496,000 copies, giving the Chicago MC his fourth #1 debut in a row. Just behind him at #2 is the debut from Young Money First Lady Nicki Minaj , who moved 375,000 copies of her Pink Friday . The pair of rap superstars lead a parade of new faces in the top 10 during the biggest week of new album releases of the year, which helped propel the top 11 discs past the six-figure mark. After nearly two years of mixtapes and guest spots on other artists’ songs for Minaj and months of leaking tracks by West, the two friendly rivals prove that the traditional way of setting up albums may officially be a thing of the past. In fact, Minaj’s total is one of the highest ever for a female MC’s debut, falling just short of the 423,000 copies former Fugees singer Lauryn Hill scored in 1998 with her smash The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Justin Bieber ‘s Walmart-exclusive acoustic disc, My Worlds Acoustic, comes in at #7 on sales of 115,000, with My Chemical Romance just behind at #8 (112,000) with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Also breaking into the top 10 is Ne-Yo , whose Libra Scale hit #9, as the in-demand singer/songwriter sold just a shade under MCR. The rest of the top 10 features Susan Boyle at #3 with The Gift (263,000), Taylor Swift ‘s Speak Now, which moves up five spots to #4 as sales picked up by 64 percent after five weeks in stores to 241,000, putting her within spitting distance of 2 million albums sold. Jackie Evancho ‘s O Holy Night EP falls a few spots to #5 (142,000), while Rihanna slips three to #6 with her latest, Loud (141,000), and the cast of “Glee” round out the top 10 with their first Christmas collection (108,000). Kid Rock ‘s time in the top 10 was brief, as his classic-rock-influenced Born Free falls six spots to #11 in week two on sales of 104,000, mirroring the tumble by popera singer Josh Groban , who slips eight slots to #12 in the second week for his latest, Illuminations (99,000). Despite a digital hit with “We R Who We R,” Ke$ha ‘s second album of 2010, Cannibal, has a modest debut, landing at #15 (74,000), even as fellow pop provocateur Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream shoots up 18 slots to #16 (72,000) as sales increased by nearly 180 percent from the previous week. The soundtrack to the Christina Aguilera/Cher movie “Burlesque” matches the so-so box-office returns of that hoofing drama, with a soft debut at #18 (63,000), and G-Unit rapper Lloyd Banks has to settle for a #26 bow (44,000) for his H.F.M.2 (Hunger for More 2). It was also not stellar news for a pair of greatest-hits collections, as Pink ‘s Greatest Hits So Far! drops 14 spots to #29 in its second week (41,000), and Jay-Z ‘s Hits Collection sneaks into the top 50 at #43 (28,000) in its chart debut. Things are also looking grim for season-nine “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze after his major-label debut, Live It Up, craters in its second week, nose-diving 74 slots to #93 as sales trailed off by 63 percent. DeWyze scored the worst-selling debut figures ever by an “Idol” winner last week. Over on the iTunes albums chart, it was mostly the same story, as Kanye took the #1 spot, followed by Nicki, the “Burlesque” soundtrack, the “Glee” Christmas album, Ke$ha, Rihanna, MCR, Swift, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More and Kings of Leon’s Come Around Sundown. Perry still ruled on the iTunes single tally with her latest single, “Firework,” with Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” just behind, Ke$ha holding at #3 with “We R” and the Black Eyed Peas hitting #4 with “The Time (Dirty Bit).” iTunes doesn’t provide detailed sales results, but Rihanna was probably happy with locking down #5 with “What’s My Name?” and #7 with “Only Girl (in the World),” with Bruno Mars slipping in at #6 with “Grenade.” Rounding out the top 10 was Mars again at #8 with “Just the Way You Are,” Far East Movement with “Like a G6” and Trey Songz with “Bottoms Up.” The battle for the top will start all over again next week with the arrival of the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The Beginning , as well as new albums from Chrisette Michele , Jazmine Sullivan , Tim McGraw and Flo Rida , as well as yet another “Glee” cast disc. ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’: From ‘Dirty Dancing’ To ‘Glee’

The classic tune seems to have had nine lives since its 1987 release. By Aly Semigran Dianna Agron and Chord Overstreet perform “Time of Your Life” on “Glee” Photo: FOX It is set to one of the most memorable dance sequences ever to hit the big screen. While the Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes duet “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” will forever be associated with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey’s hip-shaking finale in the hit 1987 film “Dirty Dancing”, the timeless song has had something of a revival as of late. Not only is it sampled in the latest Black Eyed Peas track, “The Time (The Dirty Bit),” but it also has done a running sprint and lift into a new generation’s hearts thanks to the cast of “Glee” covering it in that show’s latest episode, “Special Education.” Chord Overstreet and Dianna Agron took over Medley and Warnes’ duties, while the rest of the cast provided backup, for an appropriate (not to mention winning) choice for the sectionals competition. While the cast opted not to replicate the memorable dance that pretty much goes hand-in-hand with the song — recent “Dancing With the Stars” champ Grey also chose not to mess with the original — they did pay homage to a tune that has stood the test of time and has become even more sentimental for “Dirty Dancing” fans over the past few years. “Dirty Dancing” hit theaters in the summer of 1987 — and was re-released in theaters in 1997 — and the story of summer romance between Frances “Baby” Houseman (Grey) and Johnny Castle (Swayze) struck a major chord with audiences. And while the film surely has earned a solid place in pop culture history (“Nobody puts Baby in a corner!”), its soundtrack may have had an even bigger impact. Released on August 21, 1987, the original edition of the soundtrack catapulted to the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart and found itself there for 18 weeks. (released by RCA) (a 20th anniversary album featured 27 songs compared to the original 12) despite being the film’s final song, The astounding success of the soundtrack — music-rights organization RIAA has certified it 11-times platinum — not only came from the reaction to the film itself, but from its track list, which included classics like the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby,” as well as more contemporary numbers such as Eric Carmen’s “Hungry Eyes” and Swayze’s “She’s Like the Wind.” But, those tunes were no match for the power of “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” The cut, which was the album’s opening track and is even used as the tag line for its cover, was written by Franke Previte, John DeNicola, and Donald Markowitz. “The Time of My Life” not only had people, quite literally, dancing in the aisles, but handing over awards to Previte and crew, too. It reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in November 1987, and walked away with three of the industry’s most prestigious honors — an Oscar (Best Original Song, 1987), a Golden Globe (Best Original Song, 1987) and a Grammy (Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, 1988.) Previte, who also co-wrote “Hungry Eyes,” recently released a demo of “The Time of My Life” — it was originally sung by him and Rachele Cappelli and was played in the background while the classic scene was being filmed — as a digital download with all proceeds going to the Patrick Swayze Pancreas Cancer Research Fund. Swayze passed away on September 14, 2009, at the age of 57 after battling pancreatic cancer. For many, the downloads were a way to remember the beloved actor and donate money to his cause. As Previte explained it to NJ.com , “It’s like owning a piece of history, if you’re into the movie.” Of course, as Previte knows all too well, there is no shortage of people who are into the movie. He acknowledged in a statement , “Talk about being blessed. When I wrote ‘Time of My Life’ I never expected anything like this 23 years later. But the song has new legs and it’s running again — maybe even faster than the first time. The next generation has spoken and I love it.” The pop ballad has now spanned several generations, having been covered by the likes of Barry Manilow, sung on “American Idol” as a duet by 2006 winner Taylor Hicks and fellow contestant Katharine McPhee, and even featured in television ads for Sandals beach resorts. And, as it goes with any wildly popular song, it’s had its fair share of parodies, including a spoof during an episode of “Family Guy.” From its staggering late-1980s success in the states and abroad (it also reached #1 on both the Dutch Top 40 and the Australian ARIA Singles Chart) to its recent homages from the Black Eyed Peas and the “Glee,” the tune has gone from nostalgic soft-rock number to generational bridge gap. But, truly, more than anything else, for “Dirty Dancing” fans, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” is a tender reminder of Patrick Swayze. Lea Michele and Chris Colfer Tackle Evita: You Must Love Them?

“Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” is a Patti LuPone classic, a Madonna career-changer, a standard of the American stage, and now… yet another symbol of Rachel Berry’s haughty elitism. Yep, Glee , Lea Michele, and — strangely — Chris Colfer are attacking Andrew Lloyd Webber’s salute to Eva Peron, and the audio is ready for your constructive criticism and/or scoffs and/or LGBT sympathies.

Taye Diggs Remembers Making Poop Song On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Private Practice’ star recalls creating impromptu joint about feces on episode premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. By Mawuse Ziegbe Taye Diggs Photo: MTV News Taye Diggs has built a reputation as a Hollywood heartthrob, lighting up the screen in everything from “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” to “Brown Sugar.” But when the actor was 17, he was less of a hunk and more of a ham, constantly cutting up with his friends. “When I was 17, we were all performers. Wherever we were, we would always try to put on some kind of a show,” he remembers on the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” which also features Naya Rivera from “Glee” and NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony, premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. “They were always, always making up songs and singing them and joking around,” Diggs’ brother Gabriel recalls. One time, Diggs and his pals turned someone else’s crappy luck into a catchy tune. “I remember one time there was a fire drill, and me and my boy Shane saw this dude step in some dog doo,” he says. “We laugh … and then, right then, somebody drops a beat.” Shane recreates the beat, flapping and pursing his lips, before continuing the story: “Then [Diggs] joined in, “corn feces!” “And then it just breaks into a whole song,” Diggs recalls of the ditty’s inexplicable development. Then Shane breaks down the joint’s loopy lyrics for viewers: “I was walking down the street, rocking to the beat/ Clapping my hands and stomping my feet/ Look at the ground and what do I see?/ Corn feces staring right at me. Corn feces!” For Diggs, who was 17 in 1988, the impromptu, poop-inspired ode is still hilarious years later. “Corn feces!” the star proclaims, clapping his hands and cracking up. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Naya Rivera, Camelo Anthony and Taye Diggs — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV Related Videos ‘When I Was 17’ Episode 205 Sneak Peek Related Photos When I Was 17 (Season 2) | Ep. 5 | Naya Rivera, Taye Diggs, Carmelo Anthony Related Artists Taye Diggs
