30 Seconds To Mars Call Kanye West Collabo An ‘Unexpected Surprise’

‘It’s one of the strongest things that he’s done,’ Jared Leto tells MTV News of ‘Hurricane.’ By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars’ Jared Leto Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News Last year, when 30 Seconds to Mars were still laboring on This Is War, more than a few eyebrows were raised when Kanye West posted a photo on his blog of him, Jared Leto and the Killers’ Brandon Flowers in the studio, where the trio had apparently just finished recording a “dope-ass song.” Later, Leto explained to MTV News that the “dope-ass song” was called “Hurricane,” and it featured West singing, minus the Auto-Tune he’d been dabbling with at the time (there was no mention of Flowers’ involvement). It sounded like a promising collaboration, but, sadly, fans never actually got to hear it: When This Is War hit stores, “Hurricane” was on there, but West’s work wasn’t. Leto explained that the band had to remove Kanye from the track at the last minute, due to some rather restrictive deadlines and a lot of back-and-forth between record labels, but he and his 30STM mates were so impressed with West’s contributions that they pledged that someday, somehow, the song would see the light of day. And, as it turns out, they kept their promise. On November 2, 30STM will release a deluxe edition of This Is War, featuring a DVD, a pair of live tracks recorded for the BBC (including a version of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”) and, at long last, the full, Kanye West-ified version of “Hurricane.” It’s been a long time in the making, but, as Leto told MTV News on Friday (September 24), the song is worth the wait. “Let’s put it this way: It’s a collision of two worlds, and I think it’s a completely unexpected surprise. He’s not only on the track, but he’s phenomenal on the track. … It’s one of the strongest things that he’s done, in my opinion,” he said. “His singing is incredible on it, and he’s done a lot of really wonderful work, and I think this only adds to his work as a whole. … Working with him was an incredible experience.” Leto said the new/old version of “Hurricane” (he prefers to call it “an alternative experience”) doesn’t stray all that far from the version that ended up on This Is War — they’re both decidedly bleak ruminations on death and lust and sacrifice — but it does feature West getting darker than he’s ever gotten before. “It was an interesting time. … I remember, he started here at the house, where we made the record, and then we finished in Hawaii,” Leto said. “It is a song that’s on the darker side of things. It’s the flipside of ‘Kings and Queens’ — which has a through line of optimism and hope, and a really strong spirit to it — this song explores a different territory, and his lyrics do the same.” Leto added that, if it were up to him and West, the song would’ve ended up on the original version of This Is War, but now that 30STM are gearing up to shoot a video for the track , it does present a rather interesting opportunity — perhaps a cameo by Kanye? “I think that would be an interesting element to add for sure,” Leto laughed. “We’ll just have to see.” Are you happy the Kanye/30STM collabo is finally seeing the light of day? ‘Glee’ Tackles Britney Spears’ Snake-Charming VMA Set

Heather Morris rocks a boa and bikini similar to Spears’ 2001 Video Music Awards performance. By Mawuse Ziegbe Heather Morris on “Glee” Photo: Adam Rose/ Fox Hold tight, Gleeks! The all-Britney Spears episode of “Glee” is just days away, and details about the pop star’s tribute are trickling in. We already know the McKinley high-schoolers are going to revamp Brit’s debut smash ” … Baby One More Time” and her Madonna match-up “Me Against the Music.” The song-and-dance crew has also reached beyond Spears’ trendsetting clips to one of her iconic stage performances: the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards rendition of “I’m a Slave 4 U.” A picture surfaced Friday (September 24) of the megastar’s “Glee” namesake Brittany (played by Heather Morris) rocking a bejeweled green-and-blue two-piece similar to Spears’ skimpy VMA ensemble, with a yellow boa draped over her shoulders. Morris recently opened up about the arc of Tuesday’s episode, dishing that the glee clubbers rebel against Schuester’s ban on retooling Spears’ hits. “Through a special substance, I go under and have a couple of dream sequences — not only myself, but with Santana [Naya Rivera],” Morris told Australian magazine TV Week. “A lot of it has to do with Will [Matthew Morrison] not allowing us to perform Britney Spears songs, because he doesn’t agree with what kind of entertainer she is, so it’s our fight to do Britney. But it’s not just us doing Britney in show choir; there are other sequences — it’s our homage to her.” Tuesday’s show is shaping up to be a busy one for Morris, who is also vamping it up opposite Spears herself in their reworking of “Music.” However, the actress insisted her previous encounters with Spears helped her stay cool around the pop icon. “It wasn’t really nerve-racking, because I’ve met her before and I wasn’t really overwhelmed by who she is,” she said. “But the idea of what she has given us for the show and, for me, getting to dance with her and play with her on set, I was just staring at her at one point and thinking, ‘This is just so frickin’ awesome.’ ” Are you excited for the Britney takeover on “Glee” next week? ‘American Idol’ Auditioners ‘Super Excited’ About New Judges

‘I pretty much almost fainted,’ one ‘Idol’ wannabe told MTV News about Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez announcement. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images The big news is out: Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler are officially “American Idol” judges. MTV News first consulted a few experts on the topic , and then we hit the L.A. “Idol” auditions, at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California, to chat with the wannabe singers to see what they thought of the new faces they would soon be seeing in the audition rooms. “I’m super excited,” Kaeli Filpi said. “I’m a huge fan of Steven Tyler. My parents are all into ’80s classic rock, so I’m a huge fan of him. I’m so excited.” Fellow hopeful Vonabell Sherman echoed the Tyler love. “Oh my gosh, I could not believe that Steven Tyler and J.Lo were on [the panel], and I’m thrilled,” she said. “If I get to see Steven Tyler, I don’t even know what I’m going to do. I think I might just, like, break down. He’s awesome!” “I pretty much almost fainted,” Keeira Lyn Ford admitted about hearing the news. “Because, honestly, Jennifer Lopez has been, it sounds corny, but she’s been my American Idol forever. She does everything I’ve ever wanted to do — music, fashion — she’s just an icon, and she’s the one I’m most excited about.” Erin Shelton had an alternative suggestion for the show: add a fourth and familiar face back into the mix. “I’ve heard rumors who it’s going to be, who’s going to be here and who’s not going to be here, and I wanted them to bring Paula [Abdul] back. Come on, bring her back! Why not? She’s hilarious,” Shelton said, before redirecting her thoughts at the actual new judges. “They’re going to bring in completely different aspects of music. We’ve got a rocker and a girl who’s been in pop forever.” “I think they’re going to bring a lot of energy, definitely newness. Out with the old, in with the new,” “Idol” hopeful Aaron James said. “I think they’re definitely going to pump it up and to try to do some different things to make the show completely different. That’s what’s going to keep people watching.” Katie Heart said she hopes Lopez will put more emphasis on the performance/dance side of things. “I love that whole performance part, and [Tyler] will bring more of a rocker’s edge.” Finally, Krihste Rhodes spoke about the fact that “Idol” fans knew what to expect from Cowell and Abdul, but that Lopez and Tyler’s tastes and preferences are a total mystery. “From Simon and Paula, it’s going to be so different, because they’ve had the same mind-set for all these seasons and the same kind of thing they’re looking for. J.Lo and Steven Tyler, who knows what they like? Nobody knows yet,” Rhodes pointed out. “It’s just going to be so interesting to see the kinds of things they come up with.” What do you want to see from Lopez and Tyler? Dancing? Rock and roll? Gwyneth Paltrow To Guest-Star On ‘Glee’

‘Gwyneth is a great singer,’ creator Ryan Murphy tells the BBC. By Mawuse Ziegbe Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty The hallways of William McKinley High are looking more and more like A-list red carpets. The hit show “Glee,” which just kicked off its second season, boasts upcoming cameos from Britney Spears and Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem ready to rock the small screen. Now, another superstar is slated to drop in on the song-and-dance powerhouse: Gwyneth Paltrow. “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy recently told the BBC that the Academy Award winner and “Iron Man” star will showcase her pipes in two upcoming episodes in the second season as a substitute teacher for Will Schuester (played by Matthew Morrison). Murphy insisted that Paltrow, who is already renowned for her acting skills, can rip the mic as well. “Gwyneth is a great singer,” Murphy said. “She’s done it a little bit, but I really want to show it off and show everyone how great she is.” Paltrow is no stranger to the music scene. In addition to crooning in the 2000 movie “Duets” (and being married to superstar Coldplay frontman Chris Martin), Paltrow portrays a drug-addled country belter attempting a comeback in the upcoming movie “Country Strong.” “I played a country music singer. It’s all new, original work. It was incredible,” Paltrow told MTV News in May. Paltrow said she worked on building her musical skill set for the film, which features country hitmaker Tim McGraw and fellow music-dabbling actress Leighton Meester . “I had to learn how to play guitar, and I took singing lessons. It was a real challenge, but I felt like I pretty much pulled it off.” Paltrow’s song “Country Strong,” which she recorded for the movie, hit the Web in July. What’s On: Glee-for-All

We’re in for a freakishly resplendent season of Glee , complete with insane cameos (Gwyneth Paltrow, anyone? Barry Bostwick, anyone?) and more romance, melodrama, and harmony than a Fleetwood Mac coke bender. Elsewhere on TV, Detroit 1-8-7 proceeds with procedural flair, The Biggest Loser gets educational, and Dancing with the Stars loses a star.

Explaining the popularity of the Tea Party: it’s the witchcraft, stupid!

Many of us have been hard pressed to find a rational explanation for the rise in popularity of the tea party movement. At first it seemed to be something of a blue collar class thing, but that turned out to be untrue—tea partiers are better educated and better off financially than the average American. Then we moved on to the racism meme, and that explains a lot, certainly—the immigrant bashing, the Obama cartoons. But that in itself didn’t explain the number of otherwise reasonable people who are perfectly prepared to throw the fruits of progressive government of the past seventy years into the trashcan. Of course, white privilege is rebelling against the prospect of modestly higher taxes for the rich, but that doesn’t alone explain the outright glee with which the tea party wants to worsen poverty in America, or take away the recent expansion in healthcare coverage. None of this makes rational sense. added by: hoosierdaddy
