The Verge: Teresa Palmer

It can’t be argued that Australian men are having a bit of a moment in Hollywood — just ask actors like Ryan Kwanten or the Hemsworth brothers, tapped to play roles that America’s slender man-boys can’t quite muster up the strength for — but what of the Australian actresses who’ll follow in the footsteps of Nicole Kidman or Naomi Watts? Enter Teresa Palmer. The 24-year-old Adelaide native has appeared in productions like December Boys and Bedtime Stories , but things are about to ramp up considerably; next month, she’ll be seen as Jay Baruchel’s love interest in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice , then she’s primed for a big action moment in the alien adventure I Am Number Four , where she’ll star alongside other rising stars like Alex Pettyfer and Glee’s Dianna Agron. Palmer called up Movieline last week to chat about the crazy training regimen she’s currently undertaking for Number Four , the big movie she swears she isn’t actually attached to (no matter what IMD b says), and how the swerves of her early career have made her stronger.

The Spyder III, Is a Real Life Lightsaber

Built with the blue-laser diode of a dismantled Casio Green Slim projector, the $200 Spyder III is the world's most powerful portable laser. It can permanently blind you and set your skin—or anything else, really—on fire almost instantly. The diodes in Casio's new mercury-free Green Slim projectors apparently allow for unprecedentedly powerful portable lasers, and Wicked Lasers has gleefully harvested them for the 1 Watt Spyder III. Comparing it to the $2000 Sonar, the company's reigning portable laser powerhouse, Wicked Lasers explains that the blue Spyder III laser is 2000 times brighter to the human eye, and, at $200, 1/10th the price. http://gizmodo.com/5560206/the-spyder-iii-pro-arctic-is-a-real-life-lightsaber added by: pjacobs51

Does Glee Need New Characters When It Already Has These Two?

Now that Glee’s wrapped up its freshman season, everyone wants to know what the writers have planned for season two. Executive producer Ryan Murphy has promised that the show will add three more characters to its already overstuffed cast: love interests for both Kurt and Mercedes, as well as a Christian moralist who’ll go toe-to-toe with Rachel. My question is, do they really need to add new actors when some of those roles could go to its two most underserved actors?

‘Glee’ Book Series Set To Hit Shelves In August

The first of the Fox-authorized publications will be a prequel to the TV series titled ‘Glee: The Beginning.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe The cast of “Glee” Photo: FOX “Glee” may have wrapped up its first season , but Gleeks jonesing for more Slushie-drenched drama will soon be able to hit the books and bone up on all the musical theater madness — literally. Entertainment Weekly reports that publisher Little, Brown Books for Young Readers will publish a collection of tomes based on the hit TV series. Unauthorized books based on the breakout show are already on the market, but the Fox TV team behind “Glee” will work with Little, Brown on the content for the upcoming volumes. The first book in the series, “Glee: The Beginning,” a prequel to the TV show, is set to land on bookshelves in August. The volume will arrive with a poster and is expected to be available by the time “Glee” heads back to the airwaves for its second season. Books aren’t the only “Glee”-inspired merchandise headed down the pike to fans. The Los Angeles Times reports that a “Glee” clothing line will hit Macy’s department stores just in time for back-to-school shopping. In addition, New Directions wannabes will also be able to pick up “Glee” accessories at teen trinket haven Claire’s by the fall. Even with the monster buzz the show has generated in its high-octane first season, Fox executives said they wanted to take their time rolling out product for the show’s cultish fans. “We didn’t want to just slap a ‘Glee’ logo on a shirt,” executive vice president of Fox Licensing Robert Marick told the Times. “The product has to reflect the creativity of the show.” Fans have already proved their buying power when it comes to “Glee” offerings with the show’s insanely popular soundtracks. Chock-full of earnest revamps of classic and contemporary hits, the albums have ruled the charts, with “Glee”: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers and “Glee”: The Music, The Power of Madonna both landing at #1 on the Billboard albums chart .

‘Glee’ Season Two Had Better Answer Some Questions

Where are Rachel’s dads? Can Brittany sing? And other mysteries not resolved in the season finale By Jean Bentley Matthew Morrison and Jayma Mays on the season finale of “Glee” Photo: FOX Sure, the “Glee” season finale was relatively cliffhanger-free. William McKinley High’s ragtag New Directions weren’t able to outperform the soulless automatons of Vocal Adrenaline, but got a stay of execution anyway from Sue Sylvester, allowing them to stick around for another year. Hooray! But not all of the loose ends were tied up. We were left with several unanswered questions that we’d like to see resolved in season season two. Can Brittany, Other Asian (sorry, Mike Chang) and Matt Rutherford sing? We know Santana (Naya Rivera) can belt out a tune (see: “Like a Virgin,” “The Boy Is Mine,” “Bad Romance”), but can the other three popular-kids-turned-gleeks? Heather Morris, Harry Shum Jr. and Dijon Talton are fantastic dancers, but as their roles on the show grow, we wonder if they’ll get to perform anything but backup. Pretty much every single other character has gotten a solo (even Emma and Terri!), so it’s about time we heard from those three — unless they’re terrible. Why haven’t we met Rachel’s dads? Since Rachel finding her birth mother was such a big plotline in the second half of the season, it’s surprising we never heard from the two men who actually raised the ultra-talented, ultra-driven girl. We’re expecting to see them in season two and hoping the “Glee” gods cast actors who look exactly like the goofy guys in the photo booth strip we saw in the pilot episode. Speaking of families, will Quinn forgive her mother and move back in? And what’s up with Finn’s living situation? Quinn went into labor before she was able to resolve her issues with her mother. After being so horribly treated after her parents found out she was pregnant, it will probably take some time for her to forgive them. As for Finn, after Burt Hummel kicked him out for using a gay slur, it wasn’t really specified where he went to live. We’re going to assume he just moved back into his old house, but wouldn’t he have had to explain things to his mother? Did Burt forgive him after he dressed in drag to protect Kurt? Why doesn’t the piano accompanist ever smile? Seriously, that dude’s heart must be made of coal to not at least get a little warm and fuzzy listening to New Directions beat the odds and inspire people all the time. Plus, the energetic “Glee”-ification of every song is contagious. Everything’s possible! Yeah! See, we’re writing with extra exclamation points just thinking about it! Can’t piano dude crack a smile just once? How can Cory Monteith play the drums so well but not have any rhythm when he dances? This is one question we fear may never be answered. Cory is so confident on the skins, but watching him flail around when he tries to dance sometimes makes us feel uncomfortable, like watching bad “American Idol” auditions. Amusing, but cringe-inducing. (We kid. He’s really not that bad, but it is baffling.) What other questions would you like to see answered in the second season of “Glee”?

Movieline Forecasts Glee’s Second-Season Character Arcs

To paraphrase The Treasure of the Sierra Madre : Cliffhangers? Glee don’t need no stinkin’ cliffhangers! The season finale of America’s current obsession felt like a series finale with the way it neatly wrapped up all the plot strands that had accumulated throughout the season: New Directions was canceled, but then saved; Rachel and Finn got back together; Quinn had her baby and gave it away; Other Asian had a line of dialogue. Where can the show go from here?! Movieline breaks out the crystal ball and predicts what lies ahead for the denizens of William McKinley High School.

Jack Johnson’s To The Sea Floats To Top Of Billboard

Justin Bieber inches back to #2, and Taio Cruz debuts at #8 with Rokstarr. By Gil Kaufman Jack Johnson Photo: Karl Walter/ Getty Images If it’s summertime, then it just makes sense that ultimate surfer-dude Jack Johnson should be bobbing at the top of the Billboard 200 album charts. The mellow wave-rider’s latest, To the Sea, will easily grab the #1 spot next week thanks to sales of 243,000 in one of the best debuts of the year, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That tally easily bested the week’s #2 album, Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 , which nudges up one spot to #2 after moving another 52,000 copies. The only other newcomers in the top 10 are Taio Cruz , whose Rokstarr lands at #8 (24,000) and former “American Idol” runner-up Clay Aiken , who hits #9 with his oldies covers album, Tried & True (22,000). The rest of the top 10: Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers (#3, 45,000), Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now (#4, 41,000), Usher ‘s Raymond v. Raymond (#5, 35,000), Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame (#6, 33,000), Carole King and James Taylor ‘s Live at the Troubadour (#7, 25,000) and Ke$ha ‘s Animal (#10, 20,000). Business was way down for reunited rockers Stone Temple Pilots , whose self-titled comeback album shed 71 percent of its first-week business, dropping 14 spots to #16 on sales of 18,000. The fall was not quite as hard for Nas and Damian Marley , whose Distant Relatives falls eight spots and 32 percent to #18 in week two (17,000). Discount sales on iTunes help the indie supergroup Broken Bells jump 29 spots to #38 (9,000), while emo stalwarts Hawthorne Heights hit #50 with Skeletons (7,000) and blog-hot noise duo Sleigh Bells rocket back up 110 slots to #55 with their month-old debut, Treats (7,000). Though very little he does is quiet, the chart debut from Russell Brand ‘s “Get Him to The Greek” band, Infant Sorrow, sneaks in at #148 (4,000), no doubt thanks to such NSFW anthems as “Going Up,” “F.O.H.” and “Little Bird.” Look for the top 10 to get a makeover next week with new albums from Christina Aguilera , the “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack, another “Glee” compilation and discs from rappers Lil Jon and Plies . John Stamos: Coming to Glee!

On last night’s season finale of Glee , Will declared his love for Emma. But the curly-haired teacher will have competition for this guidance counselor’s affections in the fall, as multiple sources confirm that John Stamos will come aboard the show in a recurring role. The former Full House star will portray Emma’s dentist and love interest. Stamos may forever be Uncle Jesse to viewers of that sitcom, but he possesses an extensive singing background, having starred in Broadway musicals such as Bye, Bye Birdie and Cabaret . Stamos will be the latest big name to guest star on Glee . In just one season on the air, the creative comedy attracted such stars as Neil Patrick Harris, Josh Groban, Olivia Newton-John and Kristin Chenoweth. It also paid tribute to Madonna and Lady GaGa via multiple renditions of their singles. It’s a really good show. You should watch it.

Lady Gaga Fans Call ‘Alejandro’ Video ‘Brilliant,’ ‘Scary’

‘Words can’t describe how awesome and revolutionary this video is!!’ one fan gushed. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga in “Alejandro” Photo: Interscope Records Lady Gaga’s latest video opus, “Alejandro,” is a dizzying array of provocative imagery, roping in everything from Weimar Germany to S&M to (of course) Madonna. And as expected, Gaga’s dedicated army of “little monsters” hit the web to take it all in. While the clip’s moody, brooding visuals are a departure from the gleefully demented camp of hits like “Telephone” or the futuristic disco of “Bad Romance,” Gaga’s fans are largely into “Alejandro” ‘s sleek, retro vibe . The clip “had my blood boiling the whole time,” reader Andrew commented, adding that the video, whose sullen imagery nods to German films of the ’20s and ’30s, is “cinematic genius, pure brilliance.” “The video is effin’ brilliant!!” reader Journey wrote, echoing fellow Gaga fan Andrew. “Gaga does it yet again — it’s sleek, sexy and a bit scary. I knew she would slay.” With her machine-gun bra, simulated orgies and Catholic iconography, Gaga goes for shock value in “Alejandro.” Ralfy posted, “WHAT???? She makes SUCH a big statement with this video! Criticizing religion, homophobia, political repression, sexism!!! Words can’t describe how awesome and revolutionary this video is!!” “Oh my gosh lady gaga wears a pair of pants for the first time,” Faith observed, pointing out that the conservative wardrobe choices might prove shocking to fans accustomed to Gaga’s high drama. “As crazy as she is i loveeeee lady gaga!” she added. Still, with all of the sinister, shadowy imagery, some fans were left in the dark. “I don’t think the video was boring, ’cause I was like omg what is she going to do next in this video, BUT IT WAS A LITLE TOO CREEPY FOR ME! O.K. ALOTTTT!” ashcuptink13 commented. And although the 80s pop-culture references are numerous and hard to miss, Jennifer defended Gaga’s penchant for paying homage. “You can say she is copying Ace of Base, Madonna, [Michael] Jackson, etc., but in my opinion she is referencing them in her own unique works of art, a wonderfully grounded and respectful gesture to those who paved the way before her.” With “Alejandro” Gaga gave her fans the unexpected, which is exactly what her little monsters crave. As Samuel posted, “U do ur thang gurl GAGA> > LIVE ON MOTHER MONSTER.” What did you think of Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” video? Let us know in the comments!
