Gotham Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: The Kids Are Not Alright

We met the mother on  Gotham Season 2 Episode 2 . Veteran actress Carol Kane stopped by the new Fox hit as the mother of The Penguin Oswald Cobblepot, making the character every bit as eccentric as one would expect from the woman who brought this young villain into the world. We also watched as Cobblepot hitched a ride into the country with a couple unfortunate teenagers who made the mistake of referring to him by a certain nickname, but make no mistake: he isn’t running away from Gotham. He’s settling into a trailer (for $100 per month) and plotting his return and his revenge against all who have wronged him. And that’s a very long list. But the crux of this installment was on a different villain-to-be, as Selina Kyle and the kids of Gotham took center stage. Mostly ignored by the adults in this decaying city, many homeless youth are being snatched up by those involved in some kind of child-trafficking plot, as they pack up the kidnapped children and ship them off to… who knows where?!? Who wants to know where, really. Kyle exerts her independence and her maturity throughout the episode, as Gordon and Bullock eventually track down the culprits (after literally coming to blows inside the police station) and the Mayor shows some dark colors of his own. In order to clean up the streets, he orders the kids to be sent upstate to juvenile detention. Gordon confronts him about this decision, but he gets nowhere. To close the episode, however, Kyle gets somewhere with Gordon: she beckons him over and asks for a deal. Will he help her NOT be sent upstate in exchange for the information she can provide? That information? Selina says she witnessed the murders of the Wayne parents and can pick out the shooter. The episode cut to black on that statement, but also worth noting is an earlier scene between Fish Mooney and Carmine Falcone. The latter clearly is hip to the former’s plan to try and take him down, beating up Mooney’s lover as a way of proving his dominance. We later see Fish complaining to Butch, still intent on rising to the top rank at some point. She wants to kill Falcone with her bare bands. Isn’t it always fun when the bad guys themselves don’t get along? It adds some layers and some shades of grey to the overall product. What did everyone else think of this follow-up episode? Go watch Gotham online if you need to catch up and sound off on Episode 2 below!

Gotham Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: Can There Be Light?

Forgive us, but we have to say it: Welcome to Gotham, bitches! Sorry. But with Ben McKenzie of The OC prominently involved in this new Fox series, it simply had to be said. McKenzie, of course, is involved as Commissioner Detective James Gordon, as the drama is taking quite the risk by airing a Batman series… without the presence of Batman. Yes, on  Gotham Season 1 Episode 1 , we were introduced to a 12-year old Bruce Wayne, once again witnessing the murder of his famous parents. Unlike the film versions of this iconic story, however, we didn’t fast forward beyond that killing. We stayed in the present day and watched as Gordon comforted the child, telling him to be strong and promising that there will be “light” to overcome the city’s “darkness.” Someday. But viewers know it will take a very long time to ever get there, as villains such as The Penguin, The Riddler, Poison Ivy and Catwoman already reside in Gotham, just as children. The series will focus on their transformation into bad guys who will eventually do battle with Batman. It will also focus heavily on McKenzie’s Gordon and Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, a veteran cop who has a tight relationship with Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), a leading mobster in town. But is he truly corrupt? Or he just doing what he can to survive? Or is Bullock playing some kind of long con where he bides his time and then swoops in to rescue the residents of Gotham? Both McKenzie and Logue are perfectly case in their roles, with their partnership enough to carry this series even if it didn’t have any connection to Batman. However, it’s Robin Lord Taylor who steals the opening episode as Oswald Cobblepot, the young man who will grow into The Penguin. He hates that nickname at the moment, though, as we see him try to overtake Smith’s Mooney during the opening hour. He isn’t successful, but the premiere concludes with Cobblepot killing an innocent fisherman and then the camera panning to a dark Gotham City, teasing a series of dangerous events to come. With solid performances and an intriguing concept, Gotham is one of the few fall pilots that appears to be very promising. We thought that before seeing the premiere and we think it now. What did everyone else think?

‘Dark Knight Rises’: What’s The Future Of John Blake?

After Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, an all-new adventure starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Gotham’s finest doesn’t seem likely. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake in “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros.

New Dark Knight Rises Poster: Batsplosion!

Another Chris Nolan Batman movie poster, another juxtaposition of the Gotham City skyline in disarray featuring the Bat-symbol carved artfully in the air out of debris and angsty madness — this time, with more Batman! Get a gander at the new Batsplosion-ey poster for The Dark Knight Rises , which hits July 20 promising that “A Fire Will Rise.” (In your pants, amirite?) A second tagline also gives the poster a feeling of baddie Bane’s presence, even if he’s nowhere to be found: “The Legend Ends…” Or maybe that’s just Nolan’s way of telling us he’s almost done with his superhero opus. Either way, July’s right around the corner. [via Facebook ]

The Dark Knight Rises Viral Campaign Harnesses the Power of Graffiti

With The Dark Knight Rises release fast approaching, Warner Bros. has launched their latest bit of buzz-driving viral marketing by teasing a brand-new trailer for the July release. But in order to see that trailer, Bat-fans must first “help” the Gotham City Police Department “find” Batman by tracking hundreds of pieces of Bat-graffiti strategically placed around the world; for each bit of graffiti located and tagged via social media, Warner Bros. will unveil the new trailer one frame at a time . Graffiti: it’s not just for Oscar-nominees anymore! Tucked away in a dossier containing Batman’s GCPD criminal file (posted to TheDarkKnightRises.com ) are documents detailing where Batman stands following the events of The Dark Knight : Namely, at the top of the city’s hit list, having taken the rap for murder, kidnapping, and aggravated assault. In a viral call to action cleverly disguised as a police memo, “officers” (that’s you, Bat-fans) are directed to find pieces of pro-Batman graffiti stenciled across Gotham City (that’s every box office-targeted metropolis, right?) in an effort to stamp out grassroots support for the caped crusader. “Officers should also be directed to report any and all information pertaining to the investigation to the designated contact (#tdkr07202012 or tdkr07202012@gothampolicedepartment.com). This includes submitting photographic evidence of graffiti related to any movement in support of the vigilante’s return so we can suppress it before it becomes a problem. Officers should make sure that location services or store location is on in their camera settings.” The campaign has already unlocked a number of frames from the trailer (see below, courtesy Coming Soon): I’m sure Warner Bros. doesn’t endorse graffiti — except in bat form, and leading up to July 20, 2012, and in chalk, of course. And it’s a brilliant way to get fans in a tizzy over seeing a trailer ONE FREAKING FRAME AT A TIME. But isn’t this guy who shaved the Bat-signal into his facial hair (via Reddit) just as effective a piece of viral marketing? Move over, Movember! It’s time for… Bat-stache-uly? [via Coming Soon ]
