‘Dark Knight Rises’ Star Anne Hathaway Talks Catwoman

‘It’s just a matter of doing your homework and getting underneath the character’s skin,’ actress says. By Kevin P. Sullivan Anne Hathaway in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros While it may feel like the trailers and photos from “The Dark Knight Rises” have shown us a lot from Christopher Nolan ‘s third and supposed final trip to Gotham City, we have yet to see that much from Catwoman. After spy photos from the set forced their hand, Warner Bros. released an early look at Anne Hathaway ‘s take on Gotham’s most notorious cat burglar astride the Batpod, but aside from that photo and her brief but enticing appearance in the theatrical trailer, Selina Kyle’s role in “Rises” remains a mystery. Hathaway did, however, open up to the L.A. Times ‘ Hero Complex during a visit to the London set of “The Dark Knight Rises.” She spoke at length about why she loves her so-far divisive costume and how her Catwoman fits into Nolan’s Gotham. Check out our photo analysis of Hathaway’s Catwoman. When Warner Bros. released the first photo of Hathaway in full Catwoman attire, fan reaction ranged from full-fledged support to outright hatred. Hathaway has always stood by the costume’s unusual take on the classic look, and she once again made her case to Hero Complex. “I love the costume because everything has a purpose,” she said. “Nothing is in place for fantasy’s sake, and that’s the case with everything in Christopher Nolan’s Gotham City.” Once Hathaway won the highly coveted role, she dove deep into research, taking in Catwoman’s classic comic book appearance and the original inspirations Bob Kane and Bill Finger used to create the character. Hathaway said she drew inspiration from actress Hedy Lamarr to help shape her performance. “[Lamarr] takes these long, deep, languid breaths and exhales slowly,” Hathaway said. “There’s a shot of her in [the 1933 film] ‘Ecstasy’ exhaling a cigarette and I took probably five breaths during her one exhale. So I started working on my breathing a lot.” From there, a lot of the heavy lifting belonged to Nolan and his brother Jonathan, who co-wrote the script with the director. According to Hathaway, this Catwoman follows the pattern set by Nolan’s other Gotham City residents. “You look at Heath’s performance as the Joker, there was a lot of madness there but there was also a grace and he had a code there. There’s a lot of belief and codes of behavior in Gotham and my character has one, too,” she said. “A lot of the way she moves and interacts with people is informed by her worldview. Chris has given us all such complex, defined, sophisticated worldviews that it’s just a matter of doing your homework and getting underneath the character’s skin.” Do you think Anne Hathaway will kill it as Catwoman? Robert Pattinson ‘Impressed’ Paul Giamatti In ‘Cosmopolis’

‘He’s a good judge of other actors,’ director David Cronenberg tells MTV News of RPattz co-star’s glowing review. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon in “Cosmopolis” Photo: Caitlin Cronenberg’s Twitter Last month, when MTV News asked David Cronenberg about working with Robert Pattinson on his upcoming film “Cosmopolis,” the director put his feelings about the “Twilight” heartthrob simply: “He’s sensational.” Cronenberg said that “Twilight” fans would see Pattinson in a way they aren’t used to, since the role shares more in common with the actor’s lesser-known films like “Little Ashes” and “Remember Me.” When the director walked the red carpet last week at the Gotham Independent Film Awards in support of his film “A Dangerous Method,” he stopped to speak again with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz, revealing which scenes in particular were the most challenging for Pattinson. “Probably the last couple of days was where there was just a long, long, maybe 15-minute scene with Paul Giamatti , just the two of them in a couple of rooms,” Cronenberg said. In “Cosmopolis,” Pattinson plays Eric Packer, a young millionaire who just wants to get his hair cut. Things go awry when his limo gets stuck in traffic and a stalker, played by Giamatti, causes even more trouble. Cronenberg said that one of the biggest testaments to Pattinson’s skill as an actor was the effect he had on his Academy Award-nominated co-star. “They were both brilliant, and Paul was really impressed,” he said. “If Paul’s impressed, he’s a good judge of other actors, and he said so publicly.” The director is simultaneously promoting “A Dangerous Method” and putting the finishing touches on “Cosmopolis.” Cronenberg said that juggling both has never been an issue: “I’ve edited ‘Cosmopolis,’ and I’m about to go to Paris next week to do the sound mix of it, but I can switch over. It’s like having two kids. When one kid comes through the door, you’re there for that kid.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Cosmopolis.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Michael Jackson’s Family Not Out For ‘Revenge’

‘There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back,’ Joe and Katherine Jackson say in a statement read at Conrad Murray hearing. By Andrea Duncan-Mao, with reporting by Gil Kaufman Katherine Jackson arrives at the Los Angeles Superior Court for the sentencing of Dr. Conrad Murray on Tuesday Photo: Toby Canham/ Getty Images At Tuesday’s (November 29) sentencing hearing for Dr. Conrad Murray — where Michael Jackson’s former personal physician received four years in jail for involuntary manslaughter — a statement from Jackson’s parents was read in court. “We still look at each other in disbelief: Is it really possible he is gone? It is simply against the natural order of things,” Joe and Katherine Jackson said in the statement, read by Jackson family attorney Brian Panish. “We are not here to seek revenge. There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back.” Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook. Along with Katherine, Michael’s siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie were also reportedly in attendance at the hearing. In regards to the sentence, the family said in the statement: “We respectfully request you impose a sentence that reminds physicians they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder.” The judge agreed, lamenting that due to a new California law to address overcrowding in prisons, he was unable to sentence Murray to state prison. Stating that Murray practiced “horrible medicine” and had “absolutely no remorse,” Judge Michael Pastor declined the defense’s motion for probation and handed down the stiffest sentence possible — four years — which Murray will most likely serve in a Los Angeles county jail or on home confinement. Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael’s brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, “No.” Katherine told local TV station KTLA, “Four years is not enough for someone’s life. It won’t bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair.” Related Videos Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray Sentenced Related Artists Michael Jackson

‘Dark Knight Rises’ Commissioner Gordon ‘Very World-Weary’

‘He’s a little reminiscent of the Gordon you see in ‘Batman Begins,’ ‘ actor Gary Oldman says. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Gary Oldman in “The Dark Knight” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures This holiday season, fans looking forward to next year’s release of “The Dark Knight Rises” should be thankful for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and all the press its star Gary Oldman is doing. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz caught up with Oldman, who stars in both of those films, on the red carpet for the Gotham Independent Film Awards and noticed something different about his face. The iconic Commissioner Gordon mustache was missing. After wrapping the film recently, Oldman lost the mustache in favor of a cleaner look. “The Gordon mustache is retired,” Oldman confirmed. “They gave me a shadow box, and it has my badge, my glasses and the mustache. He is retired.” Empire magazine’s recent on-set feature dropped the detail that “The Dark Knight Rises” will take place seven years after the end of its predecessor “The Dark Knight.” This obviously leaves a lot of time out of the story and a lot of changes for the characters, including Gordon. Oldman said that his character has a return to an earlier form for the trilogy’s finale. “He’s a little reminiscent of the Gordon you see in ‘Batman Begins.’ They’ve tidied up the city, but there’s still work to be done. He’s very world-weary,” Oldman said. One of the more mysterious cast additions, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as beat cop John Blake, meant an extra man in Gordon’s Gotham PD. Oldman described his time working with Gordon-Levitt as a little distracting, but in a good way. “Someone that talented, I do these scenes with him and you can’t put a pin through an insincere moment,” he said. “It’s wonderful. You come out of character sometimes because … you’re in the scene and you find your head going, ‘Wow. He’s pretty good.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
