The Duggars: What Religion Do They Practice?

In recent years, the name Duggar has gone from a synonym for a certain brand of squeaky-clean family-friendly entertainment to something very different. These days, the name is polarizing at best, or at worst, a byword for the sort of hypocrisies and scandals often found at the heart of the most secretive cults. It’s impossible to separate the family’s controversial religious beliefs from their rise to the the near-top of the reality TV totem pole. After all, a great many of the practices that have made the Duggars fascinating to millions of outsiders are rooted in their faith. Of course, it wasn’t so long ago that the same belief system nearly brought the Duggar empire tumbling down like the walls of Jericho. For as much as we know about some specific details of the Duggar creed (sex is for procreation between man and wife only;  women are forbidden to wear pants or hold jobs, etc.), a lot of the larger questions regarding their religion remain sources of debate and speculation. For example, the biggest Duggar-related mystery of all may be a simple but profound one, and have more than one answer:  What religion do they even practice exactly? The family has been accused of giving misleading answers when asked the simple question of what faith they belong to. Remarkably, it’s a question that you’ll never hear the Duggar kids – even the grown, married adults – fielding publicly. Instead, they defer to Jim Bob, who’s stated (on the rare occasions he’s addressed the issue himself) that he and his family are Independent Baptists. Despite their name, Independent Baptists are an ultra-conservative lot with little tolerance for personal freedom. They exist on the fringes of American Christianity, and are not a recognized sect, so much as a loose network of individual congregations. Ultra-conservative televangelist Jerry Falwell abandoned the Independent Baptist Church for the more moderate Southern Baptists. That should tell you all you need to know about how extreme the IB belief system is. Amazingly, the Tontitown, Ark., family falls far to the right of even the most conservative Independent Baptists on most issues. This has led many to the conclusion that Jim Bob is taking his cues from somewhere other than the leadership of the IB Church. To answer the question of where the most extreme Duggar beliefs and practices originate, we need to turn our attention to the Quiverfull  movement. There’s debate as to who founded the movement, but it’s widely agreed that Quiverfull was popularized by the Reverend Bill Gothard in the late 1970s. In 2015,  Gothard resigned  in disgrace from his post with the Quiverfull-centered Institute for Basic Life Principles amidst a flurry of sex assault and harassment allegations. He and his organization have shelled out an undisclosed amount of cash to keep the accusers at bay, but dozens of new allegations have surfaced. In just the past couple of years, the movement’s extreme right-wing beliefs have received such negative attention that the Duggars are keeping their distance. At least to the point where they’re hesitant publicly associate with the Quiverfull movement, though there’s no question that they adhere to Gothard’s teachings. First and foremost, the  Duggars use Quiverfull teaching materials in homeschooling their 19 children (and counting). They also refer to the spiritual teachings of this movement when addressing topics such as sex and sexual abuse: After the first of Josh’s two sex scandals, which involved the molestation of five young girls, including his sisters, the family tried to deal with it “in-house.” When they sent Josh Duggar to rehab after he was outed as an Ashley Madison client, they chose a faith-based facility with the approval of Gothard’s IBLP. The Duggars cut ties with Gothard (publicly, at least) following allegations that he groped and assaulted dozens of young male and female employees. Prior to that, they called the religious leader a close family friend and “an inspiration” as recently as 2014. The most telling sign that the Duggars are Quiverfull devotees, however, is the fact that it was Gothard who first espoused the notion that defines them: That it is the duty of Christians to have as many children as physically possible. Explains USC assistant professor of religion Cavan Concannon. “In the Quiverfull movement, your kids are blessings from God and they are also weapons in the culture war.” “Some people in the movement would say that part of having a lot of kids is an attempt to birth more conservative Christians in a world that doesn’t have enough of them.”  Some have wondered how the Duggars can reconcile their wealth and fame with their devotion to a religion that preaches the importance of poverty and humility. (Recently, Jessa Duggar teaching a seminar on how to dress and act modestly – while charging $20-50 a ticket – illustrated this disconnect.) Simply put, they see themselves as soldiers in an apocalyptic culture war, and they believe that TV is the most important weapon in their arsenal. While they often talk about putting God first, the Duggars have left little mystery as to which of these messages they value more.

Bill Gothard: Duggar Church Founder Sued For Sexual Abuse

In March of 2014, Institute for Basic Life Principles founder Bill Gothard resigned in disgrace amidst allegations that he had sexually abused dozens of female employees.  Last month, after more than a year away from the public eye, Gothard – who might be best known for his close relationship to the Duggar family – relaunched his website and social media accounts, and was immediately bombarded with accusations of sexual assault . His alleged victims said it was their way of sending Gothard the message that his crimes have not been forgotten, and that they intend to see him in court. Yesterday, five of those women – Gretchen Wilkinson, Charis Barker, Rachel Frost, Rachel Lees and a Jane Doe – made good on that promise by filing a lawsuit against Gothard in which they each seek $50,000 in damages. Obviously, the suit could prove profoundly damaging for Gothard and his ministry, particularly since it may inspire more of his alleged victims (over 30 in total) to take legal action.  It may also have a negative impact on the reputation of Gothard’s most famous followers – the Duggar family. The 80-year-old pastor has been linked to the Duggars for decades and may be responsible for some of their most controversial beliefs and actions. Gothard was involved in “counseling” Josh Duggar  after the Michelle and Jim Bob’s eldest admitted to molesting his sisters. In addition, his IBLP provided the Duggars with homeschooling curricula that teaches children that victims of sexual assault are partially to blame for their attackers’ actions.  While the family is in no way directly linked to the allegations against Gothard, if a court finds that the minister used his power to “cover up sexual abuse and harassment” (as the suit alleges), the Duggars’ already-shrinking fan base may be reminded of the ways in which the 19 Kids and Counting clan did the same. Jinger Duggar and Lawson Bates: Courting?!

Are TV’s two most famous conservative Christian families about to be united in matrimony and shared hopes for a lucrative spinoff? It certainly looks that way, as fans are buzzing about rumors that Jinger Duggar is courting Bringing Up Bates star Lawson Bates. The chatter about a possible Lawson/Jinger courtship – which follows reports that Jana Duggar shot down Zach Bates – began earlier this month. Fans realized that the 23-year-old aspiring singer was in attendance at Amy Duggar and Dillon King’s wedding that took place Labor Day weekend. Jinger and Lawson didn’t engage in any sort of lusty devilry, such as hand holding or dancing, but photos from the wedding show them awkwardly standing in relatively close proximity to one another. In Duggar Land, that means more than it otherwise would … they might as well be picking out wedding venues and baby names at this point. The photos have prompted a good deal of speculation from Duggar fans, many of whom have commented on the family’s Facebook page: “Lawson and Jinger make a good looking couple!” commented one fan. “Is [there] something we should know about Lawson and Jinger?!!! They would make a perfect couple!!!” wrote another. “Yes, I see Lawson in the pic standing beside Jinger. I really think they are a couple now or getting to know each other,” added yet another. The Duggars have yet to respond to fan queries, and their silence may speak volumes. For all the online chatter, however, most telling comment comes from an interview that Lawson’s sister Erin Bates gave during in interview back in February: “I personally think, hey you have 19 kids on each side, I think it’s almost inevitable somewhere down the line,” Erin said. “As much as we see each other, I think there’s going to be an attraction somewhere. I don’t know where yet, but I think it’s gonna happen.” Granted that was before the Josh Duggar sex scandal cost the Duggars their show and reputation, but as devoutly religious young folks with 18 siblings each, we’re guessing they still found it pretty easy to hit it off.

Lindsay Lohan is a Cokehead, Loses Lawsuit

Back in February,  Lindsay Lohan tried to sue Fox News after a commentator stated on the air that Lindsay does coke with her mom. The case finally went before a judge today, and TMZ is reporting that was immediately thrown out of court. The reason? Lindsay totally did coke with her mom – probably on several occasions. The judge – who must frequent celebrity gossip sites – dismissed the case on the simple grounds that “the truth is a defense.” In other words, “Everyone knows Lindsay Lohan is a cokehead , and Dina is certainly no better.” The judge didn’t cite any examples, but if he wanted to, he could’ve reminded Lindsay of the time she called her dad and specifically told him that Dina is on coke . We don’t blame the man for not getting into specifics. Instances that prove Lindsay Lohan is on drugs and Dina Lohan is the worst kind of enabler are so plentiful that no one would make it home this weekend if the judge started listing them all.  As of right now, Lindsay’s cases against Fox News and Sean Hannity have been officially thrown out. There’s no word on the outcome of the Lindsay’s suit against the guest on Hannity’s show who made the comment, but we’re guessing that one’s dun-zo, as well. If not, the defendant should just take a camera to the Chateau Marmont this weekend, where he will 100% see Lindsay consoling herself by burying her face in a pile of blow that would make Tony Montana weep.

Bill Gothard: Duggar Family’s Minister Bombarded With Sexual Assault Accusations on Facebook

Last year, Institute for Basic Life Principles founder and CEO Bill Gothard resigned in disgrace after 34 young women accused him of various forms of sexual misconduct. Today, Gothard is best known as the former minister for the Duggar family  who outlined Jim Bob and Michelle’s controversial beliefs regarding sex and relationships. When Josh Duggar was sent for “counseling” after confessing to molesting five young girls , it was Gothard and the IBLP who helped conceal his crimes from the authorities and attempted to “cure” him through highly unconventional methods. For some reason, Gothard thought today would be a good day to break his silence after over a year in hiding. He was wrong: “I am so thankful for the outpouring of thoughtfulness and support during the last 18 months as I have faced the greatest trials of my life,” Gothard wrote on Facebook. God has been so faithful and even in discipline has stood with me and encouraged me like never before. “Through all of this He has given me treasures and insights I could never have imagined. It is my earnest desire that I will be able to see His blessing ministered into the lives of each of you with the time and strength He continues to give me.” Gothard’s Facebook followers, many of whom were personally victimized by the former preacher, were apparently forgiving mood. Some highlights: “Until you apologize publicly for molesting minors and turn over the money you stole from us, you are still nothing more than a common criminal.” “When you meet our Lord he will cast you down to hell for the many sins you’ve committed.” “You disgusting pervert for raping so many women. You will burn in Hell.” “You’re an evil man who has raped women and never apologized for it. By the metrics of your own faith you will not go to heaven. Hope you’re okay with that!” “I was only 17 when you were 60. You were molesting my girlfriend while listening to me confess my intimate girlish thoughts. You took advantage of me.” A statement from the IBLP reminded Facebook users that Gothard is still barred from any involvement with the organization. Those who have watched the thread closely claim that more than 200 comments have already been deleted from Gothard’s status update. Miley Cyrus: I Masturbate Away the Hate!

Miley Cyrus has a very simple, very enjoyable way to deal with the criticism that often comes her way: She touches herself. Down there . On a frequent basis. The not-shy singer took to Instagram yesterday and posted yet another racy image, this time sharing a picture of someone (herself, we presume) taking a ride to self-pleasure town. ” a masturbate a day keeps the haters away ,” Miley wrote as a caption to the provocative photo (above, right). Cyrus has been on quite the racy (read: naked) role of late. Earlier this week, she stripped down completely for V Magazine, only covering her private parts with some soapy bubbles. She also sat down naked while surrounded by books and chewing on her fingernail in another NC-17-rated snapshot. These instances came on the birthday suit-based heels of a nip slip the artist managed to get past Instagram censors, as Cyrus has long been a part of the Free the Nipple campaign, which urges society to pretty much chill the eff out over female nudity. Based on the picture above, along with her affiliated message, it also seems as if Miley is starting her own Free the Orgasm campaign via social media. God help us all. 11 Miley Cyrus Crotch Shots 1. Duggar Cult Damaging Kids? Former Followers of Religious Leader Say Family May Be in Too Deep

For fans, the Duggar family of TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting fame has long been a symbol for old-school Christian values and the virtues of family life. However, critics claim that there’s something much more nefarious going on behind the family’s wholesome facade, and now they may have found the proof. Testimony from several former cult members does not paint a pretty picture … In the past, the proud parents of those 19 kids, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, have publicly stated that they were followers of disgraced minister Bill Gothard . Before becoming involved in a sex scandal that brought down his career, Gothard was the leader of an organization known as the Institute of Basic Life Principles. Following allegations of harassment and claims that he helped cover up cases of child abuse, Gothard stepped down and several of his former followers have since spoken out about the leader who’s shaped much of the Duggar’s belief system: “I have no problem calling it a cult,” ex-IBLP member Micah Murray tells Radar . “What the Duggars are doing is putting Gothard’s philosophies on display as a positive thing, and they are not positive.” “From my experience, it has all the hallmarks of what makes cults so damaging – abusive authority structures, the way that people’s thinking and behavior is controlled, the way that people aren’t taught to trust themselves and trust their leader unquestioningly.” “I have seen a number of episodes [of 19 Kids and Counting] and it makes me very uncomfortable.” 9 Things BANNED in the Duggar Family 1. Dates Without Chaperones The Duggar parents often accompany their kids on dates in order to maintain “accountability” and “keep things from going in the wrong direction,” per Jim Bob. The girls are fine with this, as being alone with men puts them in grave “moral danger.” When the parents aren’t available, their older siblings will often tag along, making every date a group date and a family affair. “I think the Duggars are probably very nice people. I think they are very sincere people. But I think that the teachings of Bill Gothard are destructive.” Murray grew up in the IBLP and broke away from the organization at age 21. He says that seeing the Duggars’ method of raising their children brings to mind his own severely strict upbringing, during which he was forced to abide by a dress code and a bizarre set of rules regarding inter-sex interaction, in accordance with IBLP teachings. Kari Underwood is another former IBLP member who founded the organization Recovering Grace in order to expose the Gothard and his more destructive teachings. She says the Duggars are quite clearly victims of Gothard and company’s sophisticated brainwashing tactics. “They seem like a lovely family,” Underwood says. “I see the Duggars as sincere people as my parents were…I believe they have made some decisions for their family that are not healthy.” Underwood points to the Duggars’ strict courtship rules , as famously depicted at length on the popular reality TV program, being particularly problematic: 5 Duggar Family Dating Rules 1. It’s Called COURTING! Dating means you’re shopping around, says Jim Bob Duggar, while courtship is the path toward marriage. Courting is getting to know each other in a group setting, both families spending time together and the couple setting goals together to determine if they are meant to marry or not. “Bringing up your children in such a way that the father makes all the decisions, sons have no choices until they’ve moved on, women have no choices, it’s a hierarchy of protection. But it’s no protection.” She adds that the family’s decision to star in a reality show is the only manner in which they’ve broken from Gothard’s teachings, but that the leader is likely accepting of this choice, as it helps bring in donations. However, such a decision may prove confusing to Michelle and Jim Bob’s children: “The children probably don’t watch much television, yet they’re on a TV show,” Underwood says, adding that right now, “Their life is confusing and inconsistent… It’s important to be consistent when you have that many rules.” Hit the comments below and tell us what you think, and watch 19 Kids and Counting online to decide for yourself if the Duggars are what critics say they are. Are they victims of an insidious cult or simply a devoutly religious family living in an increasingly secular world? We turn the discussion over to you … 13 Biggest Duggar Family Scandals 1. Jessa Gets Strapped Jessa Duggar and her then-boyfriend Ben Seewald began courting controversy almost from the moment they started dating, posing for photos like this one – a picture that now seems tame considering what they’ve been stirring up more recently.
