Foster The People Grammy Performance ‘A Piece Of History’

Sharing stage with Beach Boys and Maroon 5 for Sunday’s Grammys ‘icing on the cake’ in breakthrough year, frontman tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Mark Foster of Foster The People Photo: Getty Images LOS ANGELES — Foster the People don’t want to reveal too much about their performance at Sunday’s 54th Grammy Awards , where they’ll share the stage with the surviving members of the Beach Boys (together for the first time in more than 20 years) and Maroon 5. But they will tell you what song they won’t be playing: their signature hit, “Pumped Up Kicks.” “I think my head would explode if [the Beach Boys] were playing ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ with us,” frontman Mark Foster told MTV News during Grammy rehearsals Thursday. “I would probably have to say ‘No, no, no. That’s unacceptable.’ No, we’re going to be playing with them. ” Both FTP and Maroon 5 will honor the reunited Boys — Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and early member David Marks — by singing a medley of their classics, before teaming up with the surf (and psych) legends for a triumphant final take on the seminal “Good Vibrations.” And though all three bands have been rehearsing the performance for two days now, Foster is still having a difficult time believing it’s actually happening. “We walked into the rehearsal room and met all of the Beach Boys for the first time yesterday, and it was a trip for all of us,” he said. “We grew up listening to their music since we were little kids — I probably wouldn’t be in music today if it wasn’t for them. So, to see them all in the same room together, and then playing with them, it’s wild. It’s a dream come true.” So much so that, in a year that saw FTP not only score a certified smash with “Kicks,” but tour the world and earn a pair of Grammy nominations, Sunday’s performance unquestionably will be the highlight of their young career. “I think out of everything we’ve done so far, this is the top for us. This is the icing on the cake,” Foster explained. “We were talking about it yesterday: Exactly a year ago, we were playing in front of 250 people in L.A., and so much has changed since then. It’s all kind of a blur looking back on it, but we were reflecting on it yesterday … our album came out five, six months ago, and now we’re playing with the Beach Boys at the Grammys. Things have changed pretty quickly.” So, win or lose on Grammy night (and, for the record, Foster seems to think his band is going to get creamed in both the Best Alternative Music Album and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance categories), Foster the People are going to be just fine. After all, they’re playing with the freaking Beach Boys. And it doesn’t get much better than that. “I think people that are tuning in are going to see a piece of history. This is the first time the Beach Boys have played together in over 20 years,” Foster said. “They’re one of the best bands of all time. Brian Wilson has left such a mark on musical history, to be able to see him up there with the other guys doing what they do, it’s amazing.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! J. Cole’s Grind Earns Him Best New Artist Grammy Nod

Coveted nomination follows #1 debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, and a string of well-received mixtapes. By Nadeska Alexis J. Cole Photo: C. Flanigan/FilmMagic It’s been a long road to release for J. Cole, who finally dropped his debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, in September after putting out several mixtapes. Now, the Roc Nation signee is seeing his hard work pay off with a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammy Awards . Cole World debuted at #1 in September and has sold more than 500,000 copies to date, making it an impressive freshman LP for a rapper. Make no mistake, though, Jermaine Cole’s success has been a long time in the making. After dropping his mixtape The Come Up in 2007, the North Carolina native polished his craft and released The Warm Up two years later, catching the ear of Jay-Z — specifically with the hit single “Lights Please” — and landing himself a record deal at Roc Nation. Even with Hov as his mentor, however, Jermaine continued to push things along with his own solo efforts. His debut album was hit with a series of delays and he made up for the wait by releasing his late 2010 mixtape Friday Night Lights. Between his tapes and a few free-floating singles he’d recorded over the years, Cole had enough material to warrant an opening spot on Rihanna’s Loud Tour in June. When that wrapped, Cole kicked off his Any Given Sunday series in the summer of 2011, which found him releasing new tracks or EPs weekly, leading right into the debut of his first studio album. That persistent grind resulted in noteworthy album sales and a Grammy nomination, which Jay-Z said is well-deserved . “I think it’s great for him, because I’m sure it’s a dream of his. We grew up seeing Michael Jackson, and I’m sure he grew up seeing whatever moment stuck in his mind, so I know it’s great for him to do that,” Hov told MTV News. “I think he’s already won Best New Artist, to me. His journey is what I’m really excited about.” Tune into the Grammys on Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m. ET to see if Cole takes home the award for Best New Artist. His competitors in the category are Nicki Minaj, Skrillex, Bon Iver and the Band Perry. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Spider-Man ‘Belongs To Everybody,’ Andrew Garfield Says

‘I approached the character like any fan would: with real reverence and terror,’ the ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ star tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andrew Garfield Photo: MTV News With the release of the new trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man,” fans got their first extended look at Andrew Garfield ‘s take on the wall crawler before the movie hits theaters in July. He’s darker and a bit more sarcastic, but with a series reboot coming so soon after the three films directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, comparisons between the two are bound to dominate much of the conversation. Garfield doesn’t necessarily see the need for comparison and told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz that he would have a hard time describing any differences. “I can’t answer that, really. I don’t know. I know that I saw the Sam Raimi/ Tobey Maguire version before it was legally out. I was so excited to see it, I got a pirate copy,” Garfield told MTV News before a screening event Monday. “I was blown away. [Tobey has] been Spider-Man in my imagination since then, in my mind’s eye.” The star explained how “The Amazing Spider-Man” was made with the series’ history in mind and how that added to the story. “Thinking about those movies outside of just knowing the history that was supporting our movie, we are just another chapter in the legacy,” he said. “I approached the character like any fan would: with real reverence and terror and attempt to do it justice.” Garfield has never kept his own fandom a secret, having even appeared at San Diego Comic-Con in store-bought Spidey regalia. That passion played a big part in how he thinks about the role. “I do feel like he’s in me, like all true fans do,” he said. “That’s what being a fan is of a character like this: feeling like there’s no separation between you and them and that you have ownership over them. Ultimately, you have no ownership over it, because he belongs to everybody.” When it comes down to it, the actor in the suit doesn’t actually matter, according to Garfield. “The symbol is bigger than any actor playing him and any particular movie or comic book,” he said. “The symbol of the mask, the symbol of the suit, it doesn’t even matter who’s in it, as long as somebody’s in it to keep the symbol alive. That’s what’s important to me.” But as Uncle Ben said, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” Though it may not matter to Spider-Man fans who is in the suit, getting up every morning to play the man is a different story. “In terms of how I approached it, I just approached it every day I woke up. My first thought was ‘Oh, boy,’ ” Garfield said. “Then my second thought was, ‘Remember, just go from a place of being a fan and caring as deeply as you do.’ You have to just let go and trust from there on. If people like it, people like it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Amazing Spider-Man.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Adele Opens Up About Throat Surgery Before Grammys

‘It was really hard. I love talking,’ singer says during ’60 Minutes’ special. By James Dinh Adele Photo: Getty Images Sunday is shaping up to be quite a big day for Adele . Not only is the big-voiced diva up for six awards at the Grammys , but she will also open up about her recent throat surgery in a “60 Minutes” interview, airing on CBS immediately before the awards show. In a teaser for the TV special, the British songstress speaks with Anderson Cooper about her vocal-cord procedure as well as how she dealt with the post-surgery restrictions. “They put lasers down your throat, cut off the polyp and kind of laser your hemorrhage back together and fix it,” Adele wearily told the news anchor. She was ordered not to speak a word throughout the months of November and December, but the songstress made the best of a not-so-bright situation by using notepads and a text-to-speech cellphone application to communicate with others. “It was really hard. I love talking,” she said. The singer confessed that the advances in technology made it a little difficult to say what was really on her mind. “I love to swear, and most of them you can’t swear on, but I found this one app where you can swear, so I’m still really getting my point across,” she said with a smile. Adele’s road to recovery will come full-circle when the singer performs at Sunday night’s Grammys . The U.K. songstress recently tweeted her excitement about returning to the stage: “Ima be, Ima be singing at the Grammys. It’s been so long I started to forget I was a singer! I can’t wait.” Chaos! Katy Perry to Perform at Grammy Awards, Super Bowl Pre-Party

Katy Perry has booked her first U.S. performances since breaking up with Russell Brand late last year. It looks like she’s got a busy week ahead of her, too. The 27-year-old hits the stage at a private pre-Super Bowl party in Indianapolis Saturday, then will do double duty on Grammy weekend in Los Angeles. On February 10, she’ll be among the headliners honoring Paul McCartney at the MusiCares benefit. Then it’s on to the 2012 Grammy Awards February 12! Perry is a nominee for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Solo Performance, and has enjoyed a record-setting year, making the Grammys a fitting return spot. Katy has performed abroad as a single woman, just not in the U.S. In her first show since Russell Brand filed for divorce , Perry planted a kiss on a lucky fan’s cheek. A pic of Perry smooching the surprised, shirtless male onstage caused quite a stir on the Internet. Katy set the record straight on Twitter afterward, though: “I have *kissed* 1 boy, picked randomly out of the audience, on the cheek as part of my show for all 125 tour dates,” she tweeted. “Simmer down now.” LOL. Sure … but were you single then, Katy?! [Photo: WENN.com]

Chris Rock Perplexed By Spike Lee’s Sundance Tirade

‘I just asked a normal question,’ Rock tells MTV News about what prompted the director’s passionate criticism against Hollywood. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Chris Rock Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — The old refrain of “more money, more problems” seems to apply to Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer,” the director’s new drama he unveiled at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday. During a Q&A session following the screening of the filmmaker’s religion-focused feature, actor and comedian Chris Rock (at Sundance for his new film “2 Days in New York” from Julie Delpy) asked Lee if he would have done anything differently had he “actually gotten… studio money” for the film. Lee’s response was a fiery one, fueled with comments that condemned the Hollywood studio system for knowing “nothing about black people.” “We never went to the studios with this film. I bought a camera and said we’re gonna do this mother[bleeping] film ourselves. I didn’t need a mother[bleeping] studio telling me something about Red Hook! They know nothing about black people,” Lee said in response to Rock’s question, according to the New York Post . “And they’re gonna give me notes about what a 13-year-old black boy and girl do in Red Hook? [Bleep] no!” Lee’s response was nothing short of perplexing to Rock, who told MTV News that he “just asked a normal question.” “I just asked him how it would have been different if he’d had it financed by a studio. If he had more money,” he continued. “That was it. That’s all I said. Everything else, I don’t know. You gotta ask Spike.” In “Red Hook Summer,” Lee tells the story of a young boy sent by his mother from Atlanta to spend the summer in Red Hook, Brooklyn, with his grandfather, a strict preacher he’s never met. The film stars Clarke Peters, Jules Brown and Thomas Jefferson Byrd. Do you think Spike Lee’s criticism at Sundance out of line? Sound off in the comments section! Chris Brown and Rihanna NOT Getting Back Together … But Totally Have Been Hooking Up, Source Says

Chris Brown and Rihanna have in fact been hooking up on the sly again recently, but they aren’t considering a full-fledged reconciliation, according to a new report. “They’ve probably hooked up no more than half a dozen times in the past year. It’s unlikely Rihanna and Chris would ever get back together though,” a source said. “Rihanna doesn’t care if she were to get public backlash if they were to reconcile,” the insider adds . “But, she is the one calling the shots now, which she likes.” Therein lies her reluctance: “Rihanna knows that if they were to get back together, she wouldn’t be able to maintain that strong role, and Chris would lose interest.” It has nothing to do with his infamous attack on her, in other words, but simply that “they are both very young, Rihanna likes being in control now, and would never be able to trust Chris because he has problems staying faithful.” Apparently. Sorry, Karrueche Tran . Rumors have swirled about Rihanna and Chris Brown in recent weeks, and both stars are expected to be on hand when the Grammys are handed out February 12. Brown is nominated for three Grammys: Best R & B Album, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Song. Rihanna will perform with Coldplay at the show. Plenty of people wish that Chris and Rihanna would give it another go, in spite of all that went on between them – Brown’s mom Joyce Hawkins included! “Joyce LOVES Rihanna, and she often calls her the daughter that she never had but always wanted,” the insider claims. “Joyce would love for Chris and Rihanna to continue to spend time together, and maybe down the line, get back together.” What do you think? Should Ri and Chris give it a go?
