Exclusive: Eminem To Perform At The Grammys

Other performers for February 13 show will be announced Thursday. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage Consider Eminem ‘s comeback complete. The superstar MC will take the stage at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards next month in Los Angeles, MTV News has learned exclusively. The Recording Academy will officially announce Em and other performers on Thursday; Pitchfork reported Wednesday (January 12) that Arcade Fire will also be performing at the awards show. The performance is the latest in a line of accomplishments for Eminem since he released Recovery, which is up for Album of the Year. The Detroit lyricist scored a pair of #1 singles from the album with “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna. Those songs helped Em earn 10 Grammy nominations . It’s quite a turnaround from his last project, Relapse. That album debuted at #1 but received mixed reviews, despite winning Best Rap Album at the 2009 Grammys. With Recovery, however, Em has returned to form. Now, he’s set to take center stage at the prestigious event. Twelve months ago, he joined Drake for the then-upstart’s “Forever” performance. But for this year’s telecast, the multiple Grammy winner will take top billing. He’s already been featured in the show’s promotional campaign . A touching 30-second spot showcases Em’s musical legacy , from the loss of his friend, fellow MC Proof, to his struggles through drug dependency and his rise back to the top of the hip-hop game. There’s no question the veteran MC will be the star of the festivities. In December, when nominations were revealed, the rapper led the pack, besting Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, who received seven and six nominations, respectively. The Grammys air Sunday, February 13, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. What song are you hoping Eminem performs at the Grammys? Let us know in the comments! Katy Perry Producer Likes Teenage Dream’s Grammy Chances

‘Being nominated is great, but winning is even better,’ Tricky Stewart tells MTV News of Album of the Year nod. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Tricky Stewart Photo: MTV News Despite debuting at #1 on the Billboard albums chart and spawning three massive hit singles, some in the industry were surprised earlier this month when Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream grabbed a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year . Tricky Stewart was not one of them. “You know, I did four songs on that record, so I’m really proud of it,” he told MTV News. “And not just because it’s [nominated in] the Album of the Year category, but because Dr. Luke did an amazing job on the singles and Stargate did an amazing job on the singles … but all of us together, we put that album together, and I think it’s pretty flawless.” And while, at this point, Grammy noms are nothing new to the super-producer — this marks the second-consecutive year he’s in the running for Album of the Year (Beyonc

Phoenix Recall Meeting ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Snooki

‘We’ve become friends!’ guitarist Laurent Brancowitz laughs to MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Phoenix Photo: MTV News Back in January, worlds collided when “Jersey Shore” star Snooki met Phoenix , the world’s hugest rock band (from France). Their chance encounter occurred on the red carpet of the Grammys, where the Snookster was serving as MTV News’ special correspondent and Phoenix were, uh, walking (they’d go on to win Best Alternative Album too). The end result was 83 seconds of lost-in-translation awkwardness, an “interview” that was amazing for several reasons, most of them having to do with the fact that neither party had any idea who the other was (though we also like the part where Snooki tells Phoenix guitarist Laurent Brancowitz that he looks like “the vampire Edward”). Not surprisingly, the video of their meeting became an Internet sensation, to the point where, for the remainder of 2010, Phoenix were forced to answer questions about Snooki everywhere they went (Snooki, on the other hand, has since moved on to bigger and better things ). So, naturally, when MTV News caught up with the fabulous French foursome over the weekend at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas, we decided to continue the trend. But rather than just ask them about their run-in with Snooki, we also wondered if their relationship had grown any. “We’ve become friends!” Brancowitz laughed. “No. People talk about it a lot, but we always manage to let it be very blurry. We have absolutely no idea of the details. It was a very nice encounter.” We suspect that was just him being polite, but we’ll let you be the judge. Above is our latest interview with Phoenix plus the original clip of them meeting Snooki for the first — and, we’ll assume, last — time. Watch it and try very hard not to cringe yourself to death. Rick Ross Responds To Latest Grammy Snub

Miami MC congratulates nominees, and says ‘it’s just something else for me to work towards.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Audrey Kim Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Although he’s been passed over by the Grammys for the second consecutive year, Rick Ross is taking his latest snub in stride. The Miami lyricist was shut out of this year’s nominations, despite the success of the certified-gold release Teflon Don and street smashes like “(B.M.F.) Blowin’ Money Fast” and “MC Hammer.” When MTV News caught up with the MC at Power 106 ‘s Cali Christmas Friday night, the boss maintained he doesn’t have any beef with the Recording Academy, and gave props to his peers who received nods. “Everybody that was nominated this year for the Grammys, I congratulate them, and I feel like everyone deserve it,” Ross said. Despite being overlooked for the second year in a row , Ross shrugged off the issue, saying that snatching a trophy is another goal he could focus on — if he felt like doing so. “As far as me, I feel like it’s just something else for me to work towards, you know, if that’s something that I’m really, really trying to achieve,” Ross added. The “Super High” spitter chose to instead focus on the banner 2010 he’s wrapping up, which includes a #2 debut for Teflon, collaborations with a colorful lineup of game-changers from Kanye West to Erykah Badu , a top-five Hottest MCs ranking and The Source magazine’s Man of the Year title. “Other than that, I had a wonderful year and I really couldn’t ask for no more,” Ross said. While Ross was a major player in the rap game this year, missing out on trophies has become a recurring theme for the mic-ripper, who briefly stirred up controversy after reportedly left the 2010 Soul Train Awards early after losing an award to Eminem. However, Ross maintained that his premature exit was due to issues with the event’s production and not his loss to Em. “I been going to award shows for a long time and I’ve never had a problem with who won. I’m happy I’m recognized,” Ross recently told The Source. “We were in the trailer, going over these particular [performance] issues [with the show’s producers]. Out of respect, we came back out there to give them a reaction to the nomination. They gave the award to Eminem. I applauded. Big record. That wasn’t the issue. Like I said, the things we requested weren’t met.” What do you think of Rick Ross getting passed over for a Grammy nomination? Let us know in the comments! Jethro Tull, New Vaudeville Band and Katy Perry: A Historical Tribute to the Worthlessness of the Grammys

On Wednesday night CBS aired the Grammy nominations in the form of a big concert, but the music died sometime in the first hour: Katy Perry earned an Album of the Year nomination, Glee garnered one for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals (come on ), and typically tepid Grammy bait like Lady Antebellum picked up six noms. While the Grammys are supposed to represent music’s biggest night on television, the ceremony remains what it has always been: a valentine to the recording industry, where popularity and obligation supersede quality. We’ve lined up our favorite reasons to loathe the Grammys (which is saying a lot coming from award-show junkies like us), and we hope you’re dragging the needle onto your prized Jethro Tull LP as you read along.
