Henry Cavill Reveals How He Became Superman

Director Zack Snyder says actor exuded ‘crazy-calm confidence.’ By Eric Ditzian Henry Cavill Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images Less than three weeks after Henry Cavill was tapped to be the latest actor to pull on Superman’s tights in Warner Bros.’ rebooted take on the iconic hero, the 27-year-old actor is stepping into the public eye as the face of the franchise. Cavill graces the upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly , not suited up like the Man of Steel but wearing a faded “S shield” T-shirt underneath a leather jacket. Of course, he did have to don Superman’s duds to win the role. In fact, according to director Zack Snyder, the tights he tried on were a replica of the ones worn by former Superman Christopher Reeve. “If you can put on that suit and pull it off, that’s an awesome achievement,” Snyder said. While Cavill had packed on muscle for Tarsem Singh’s action-fantasy, “Immortals,” he had to shed the weight for his latest gig — a starring role opposite Bruce Willis in “The Cold Light of Day” — and the prospect of trying on Superman’s costume had him feeling more than a little anxious. “All I could think was: Oh, god. They’re going to look at me and go, ‘He’s not Superman. Not a chance,’ ” Cavill admitted. “The actor inside me was going: ‘You’re not ready! You’re not ready!’ ” Cavill could certainly be excused for his apprehension. The Brit had numerous close calls with major franchises. He was previously attached to a role as Superman, but lost out after McG exited the project and Bryan Singer eventually signed on to direct. Cavill also was reportedly considered to play Batman, James Bond and Green Lantern , but was passed up each time. This time, however, Snyder took one look at Cavill in the Super-suit and knew he could play the Man of Steel. “He walked out, and no one laughed,” the director said. “Other actors put that suit on, and it’s a joke, even if they’re great actors. Henry put it on, and he exuded this kind of crazy-calm confidence that just made me go, ‘Wow.’ OK: This was Superman.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Meet The New Superman: Henry Cavill

British actor known for ‘The Tudors’ was once attached to McG-helmed reboot. By Mawuse Ziegbe Henry Cavill Photo: Michael Loccisano/FilmMagic He’ll be flying into movie theaters in 2012, but who exactly is the newest Superman, Henry Cavill? The latest screen star to don the famed crimson cape has gained fame as a castmember of Showtime’s period romp “The Tudors,” and will hit the big screen in the upcoming Greek mythology epic “War of the Gods.” But before he was tapped to play the iconic superhero, he was super close to portraying everyone from Twilight’s Edward Cullen to James Bond to, ironically, Superman in another filmmaker’s vision of the superhero. He was up for Superman before British screen star Cavill has been making a name for himself stateside as Sir Charles Brandon on the saucy historical drama “The Tudors,” but he’s come close to portraying Superman before. MTV News caught up with Cavill back in 2009, and the then 25-year-old star told us he was set to zip through the sky as the Man of Steel in director McG’s (“Terminator Salvation”) take on the American icon. However, a shuffling of filmmakers resulted in Cavill getting dropped from the project, which eventually became the 2006 flick “Superman Returns.” “I was attached to the McG ‘Superman’ movie,” Cavill told MTV News “Then Bryan Singer came on and took the helm and he made his movie. “[The McG and Singer versions] were two different movies,” Cavill explained. “So it wasn’t so much of a sting because it was like, ‘Oh, I got [the role],’ and then the movie just didn’t happen.” He also reportedly missed out “Batman” … and “The Green Lantern” Cavill was rumored to be on the shortlist of leading men up to vanquish Gotham-area baddies in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” franchise, a role which eventually went to fellow Brit Christian Bale. Ryan Reynolds also reportedly beat out Cavill for the “Green Lantern” series. He lost Edward Cullen to Robert Pattinson Thanks to RPattz, Cavill missed out on one of the biggest movie franchises in recent years, “Twilight,” even though he had some strong support in his corner. “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer once said that Cavill was her dream choice but Mother Nature thwarted the casting. “The only actor I’ve ever seen who I think could come close to pulling off Edward Cullen is Henry Cavill. Henry was Albert, the young son in ‘The Count of Monte Cristo.’ Can you see it? I know I can!” Meyer blogged in 2007. However, after some delays in development, Meyer conceded that Cavill had aged out of “Twilight” territory. “The most disappointing thing for me is losing my perfect Edward.” “By the time the movie came around, I didn’t look right for the character,” Cavill explained to MTV News in 2009, adding, “No one even called me or my agent.” … And he was almost James Bond The actor also auditioned for the role of 007 in “Casino Royale,” but instead Daniel Craig knocked back shaken martinis and coolly took out henchmen as the world’s first blond Bond. He may not have played Bond but he does drive the character’s famed car In a 2009 interview with JustJared.com , Cavill opened up about his biggest splurge, which he said was an Aston Martin — the same sleek, high-end ride that’s been associated with Bond. “It was one of those things that just ended up happening, like, ‘Right, okay, just treat yourself,” he said. The star also dished that he enjoys video games like World of Warcraft and shows like “Dexter.” Related Photos Henry Cavill Imagined As The New Superman

Live Blogging the Recently Released Captain America Footage

Finally! I’ve been patiently waiting for any officially released footage from Captain America: The First Avenger from the day it was announced; Green Lantern only comes out one month before Captain America and I feel that I’ve already seen half the film. Well, as you may have heard, today is that special day as the early footage of Captain America is heating up the Internet in the form of a promo for a promo that will air on Wednesday’s installment of Entertainment Tonight . In celebration, I’ve decided that I will live blog the footage, a la Harry Potter , so I can get my initial reactions down. All right, I’ve just downed two Coke Zero’s in preparation, so…let’s do this!

Enough, Already, About Natalie Portman’s ‘Norbit’

Listen, let’s just make this quick: Friends With Benefits is not Natalie Portman’s Norbit . Don’t let anybody tell you differently. Of course, they won’t tell you per se — they’ll ask or insinuate or poll (or offer some epic, perverse combination of the three), pretending to be on the forward edge of a significant moral-cultural quandary that will define this year’s Oscar race for Best Actress, advancing and attempting to rationalize a conversation with no rational foundation in the first place. We’re better than this, folks, and now is the time to eradicate this non-issue from the Oscar 2010 books.

The 10 Most Anticipated Movies and TV Shows for 2011 — Mike’s Picks

To be honest, I hadn’t given a lot of thought to anything coming up in 2011. Usually, I wait until the last minute to think about anything — Christmas gifts? That’s Thursday’s problem! — let alone a movie that might still be twelve months away. Now, being forced at gunpoint (figuratively; a literal description would be more my Gchat being on a constant loop with the words, “Where’s your list?!”), to look ahead to 2011, there are quite a few things that I’m excited about for the New Year. Admittedly, I’d like to throw on a few movies that you’ve never heard of — just to create the illusion that I possess some sort of eclectic knowledge to make myself feel better — but that would be lying. So here’s my actual, make-fun-of-it-if-you-want list.

Christina Aguilera Defends Her ‘X Factor’ Performance

‘I don’t think there is such a thing as too raunchy when it comes to the art form of burlesque,’ singer says. By Jocelyn Vena Christina Aguilera Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Christina Aguilera once went by the moniker Xtina, but apparently that didn’t give her permission to be racy when she performed on “The X Factor” this week. The Daily Express reports that her performance of “Express” from her Golden Globe-nominated movie “Burlesque” received more than 1,000 complaints after Aguilera and her dancers shimmied around on the stage provocatively during the prime-time broadcast. But Aguilera is standing by the performance. “I don’t think there is such a thing as too raunchy when it comes to the art form of burlesque,” the singer explained at the U.K. premiere of the film. “It’s very empowering to women to feel confident in their own skin and in their bodies and this represents that. Everyone in the spotlight is judged and there are many opinions out there, but I stick true to what I believe in.” While that performance may have left a bad taste in some people’s mouths, Aguilera also hit the stage with “X Factor” contestant Rebecca Ferguson, who said that performing “Beautiful” with the singer was a career high. “She’s an amazing artist. I was so starstruck,” she told Echo.co.uk . “I still can’t believe I got to sing with her.” Ferguson added that Aguilera helped calm her nerves before the performance. “We rehearsed it through and I was worried I would sing her lyrics, so she said we would work it out onstage. She told me to keep eye contact with her,” she said. “I thought she was really sweet. I liked her. Don’t get me wrong, she was a professional, but at the same time, she didn’t have to record a good luck message for me.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Christina Aguilera Related Artists Christina Aguilera

Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson: A Look Back

Reynolds recently referred to Johansson as his ‘best buddy.’ By Jocelyn Vena Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds in September 2009 Photo: Pacific Coast News It’s been a bad week for celebrity relationships. First came news that Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron had broken up , and then Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson announced that they were splitting after two years of marriage. While the two had remained relatively private about their relationship, which began in 2007, they always had the kindest things to say about their marriage and each other. Shortly after getting married in 2008, Johansson admitted that she loved having a private wedding, opting out of the lavish Hollywood affairs many of her peers tend to throw. “It was my mission to have a moment of privacy, to do something for myself,” Johansson told the Los Angeles Times about the wedding, which took place in Canada. “I was happy with the results of that.” She opened up about her decision to marry in Glamour last year, saying, “I never really thought about getting married — it just kind of happened. It seemed natural, the right thing to do. It was kind of a celebration of the time.” The actress and sometime singer expressed her happiness about having that special someone in her life. In the May issue of InStyle, Johansson opened up about being married to the “Green Lantern” star , saying, “I mean, you’re married, and suddenly you have your own family. There’s a nice comfort in that. That part of your life is certain, in a way. You’ve got your home in that other person.” Reynolds expressed a similar sentiment to People when he was declared the Sexiest Man Alive. Of being married to Johansson, he said, “You get to hang out with your best buddy every day.” At the Tony Awards in June, when Johansson took the stage to accept an acting award for “A View From the Bridge,” she gave a nod to her husband , thanking “the Canadian I live with.” The two had very bustling careers, and Reynolds noted in GQ this fall that kidsweren’t in the plans just yet. “A few years down the road, having a family,” he said. “That’s years away at this point.” Related Photos The Way They Were: Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson
