Coveted nomination follows #1 debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, and a string of well-received mixtapes. By Nadeska Alexis J. Cole Photo: C. Flanigan/FilmMagic It’s been a long road to release for J. Cole, who finally dropped his debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, in September after putting out several mixtapes. Now, the Roc Nation signee is seeing his hard work pay off with a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammy Awards . Cole World debuted at #1 in September and has sold more than 500,000 copies to date, making it an impressive freshman LP for a rapper. Make no mistake, though, Jermaine Cole’s success has been a long time in the making. After dropping his mixtape The Come Up in 2007, the North Carolina native polished his craft and released The Warm Up two years later, catching the ear of Jay-Z — specifically with the hit single “Lights Please” — and landing himself a record deal at Roc Nation. Even with Hov as his mentor, however, Jermaine continued to push things along with his own solo efforts. His debut album was hit with a series of delays and he made up for the wait by releasing his late 2010 mixtape Friday Night Lights. Between his tapes and a few free-floating singles he’d recorded over the years, Cole had enough material to warrant an opening spot on Rihanna’s Loud Tour in June. When that wrapped, Cole kicked off his Any Given Sunday series in the summer of 2011, which found him releasing new tracks or EPs weekly, leading right into the debut of his first studio album. That persistent grind resulted in noteworthy album sales and a Grammy nomination, which Jay-Z said is well-deserved . “I think it’s great for him, because I’m sure it’s a dream of his. We grew up seeing Michael Jackson, and I’m sure he grew up seeing whatever moment stuck in his mind, so I know it’s great for him to do that,” Hov told MTV News. “I think he’s already won Best New Artist, to me. His journey is what I’m really excited about.” Tune into the Grammys on Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m. ET to see if Cole takes home the award for Best New Artist. His competitors in the category are Nicki Minaj, Skrillex, Bon Iver and the Band Perry. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Lady Gaga and Adele also up for two major pop trophies at Sunday’s show. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her video for “Firework” Photo: EMI The pop stars nominated at this year’s Grammy Awards couldn’t be more different from one another, both visually and sonically. In the two biggest pop categories, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance, every spectrum of pop is represented: from soulful to candy-colored and everything in between. As the Grammy Awards approach, MTV News will break down the contenders in both categories. So, here we go. Best Pop Vocal Album Adele’s 21 has six nominations under its belt at this year’s show, including the biggie, Album of the Year. Since its release nearly a year ago, Adele’s heartbreak opus reigned on radio, the charts and the collective hearts of the lovelorn everywhere. It boasts production from Ryan Tedder, Paul Epworth and Rick Rubin, and tracks the singer’s heartbreak after a split from a former beau. Cee Lo Green gave the world a big “F— You” with his The Lady Killer , which dropped in November 2010, and the album has sustained its momentum thanks to that one track (and Cee Lo’s “The Voice” gig). The album got some songwriting and production help from fellow nominee, Bruno Mars, and in addition to this nod, its track “Fool for You” is also up for some gold. Lady Gaga’s love-yourself album, Born This Way, is a metal-disco composition about romance, New York City and couture. With production from RedOne, Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow, the album was released last May, and while the sound looked to the future, it also paid homage to her past when she enlisted the late Clarence Clemons from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and Brian May of Queen. Bruno Mars crooned his way to the top of the charts with his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Displaying his love for melodies and lyrics about love and loss, Mars’ experiment in mixing doo-wop and new millennium production value managed to make him a household name and a big-time nominee. Album of the Year-nominated Loud was Rihanna’s return to form. After a dark turn on Rated R, Ri was feeling sunnier, saucier and sassier on the 2010 album that featured production from Stargate and Tricky Stewart and tracks like the fist-pumping “Only Girl (In The World)” and the reggae-influenced “Man Down.” Best Pop Solo Performance On “Someone Like You,” Adele’s big voice and knack for heartache was on full display. The second 21 single got a songwriting and production assist from Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson (the guy who gave us “Closing Time” in the ’90s) and follows Adele as she comes to terms with the loss of her former flame. Like Adele, Bruno Mars put his heart and soul on the line on the Doo-Wops & Hooligans uber-ballad, “Grenade.” The song, produced by the Mars-fronted the Smeezingtons, tracks a distraught man as he realizes the woman he loves doesn’t feel the same way about him. Lady Gaga had been teasing “You and I” for some time, but before the finished version appeared on Born This Way, no one could have guessed what May, Gaga and super producer Mutt Lange could have cooked up. What they released was a funky, smashing ode to reclaiming lost love. Katy Perry hadn’t touched on deeper issues on earlier singles, but when it came to her Teenage Dream feel-good anthem, “Firework,” she went there and it took on a life of its own. With Ester Dean and Stargate working with Perry on the song, it topped the charts and became the fourth in a record-breaking string of #1 hits off that album. Like Perry, Pink gave a voice to the disenfranchised on “F—in’ Perfect” (off her greatest hits collection that dropped in 2010). Working with Max Martin and Shellback on the track, she hit the top of the charts and empowered her fans thanks lyrics like, “You’re f—ing perfect to me.” Who do you think will “pop” at the Grammys this year? TheWrap reports that Xtina is onboard for season three, which could debut in the fall opposite ‘X Factor.’ By Kara Warner Christina Aguilera on “The Voice” Photo: NBC We are only two episodes into the second season of “The Voice,” and already there is some news about the hit NBC show’s third season. According to TheWrap , Christina Aguilera has signed a contract to continue her stint on the judging panel for a third season of the singing competition. Aguilera is the first of the four judges to ink her deal, a payday for which is supposedly in the $10 million realm. TheWrap also reports that the third season could premiere in the fall rather than waiting until 2013; this would potentially put “The Voice” in direct competition with Fox’s “X Factor.” When MTV News reached out for comment from NBC, a show insider said no decision has been made about season three. It is expected that Aguilera’s fellow judges Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton will all renew their contracts in the coming weeks and that the third season will tape from September through December of this year. “The Voice” has proven to be a major hit for NBC. The season-two premiere following the Super Bowl on Sunday earned NBC’s best ratings for an entertainment show in six years. Monday’s episode earned the network’s best numbers for that particular timeslot in nearly eight years, save for broadcasts of the Olympics. When MTV News caught up with the show’s new social media correspondent Christina Milian recently, the singer/actress gushed about the lovefest on set. “It’s been fabulous. I’ve had fun working with the cast already,” she said. “Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Cee Lo, Carson Daly — it’s an awesome super team they have, and from day one, they treated me like family. “This show is about music, it’s about talent, and it’s about this passion and this dream of becoming a star,” Milian added. “Still to this day, every day that I wake up, I have that same dream, so to be involved with the show, [it’s amazing] to watch what they incorporate and how the coaches act as advisers and mentors to the artists and really truthfully help them and push them and want them to be the best so they can win.” Are you hoping all four “Voice” judges are back for season three? Guess the change in his pocket was enough. Cee Lo Green reunited with his boys from Goodie Mob this week, inside an Indianapolis strip club and TMZ has learned the crew treated the stripper ladies to a five-figure thunderstorm: Cee Lo and his boys met up in Indy for some pre-Super Bowl partying Wednesday night … and decided to take the festivities over to a local gentlemen’s establishment around 1:00 AM Thursday morning. Sources inside the club tell us … Cee Lo requested lap dances from “the baddest b*tches in the club” … and the group rewarded their good behavior by making it rain with roughly $10,000 in cash. We’re told there were other famous people in the club at the time — including some NFL players — but they were no competition for Team Cee Lo, who easily commanded the girls’ attention. ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ ‘ tease will air on ‘American Idol’ this Thursday, followed by full-length premiere on Friday. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage Madonna teased her new music video last week with a simple phrase: pom-poms. Well, the Queen of Pop wasn’t lying. In a new blink-and-you’ll-miss-it clip from her “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” video , Madonna is definitely getting her cheerleader on. The tease appears in an ad for this week’s “American Idol,” where a preview for the video will make its world debut ahead of the video’s proper Friday premiere. The Mega Force-directed video was shot in December and made headlines when Nicki Minaj tweeted that she and Madge shared a kiss on set. In a sea of quick-cut images from the fuller “first look,” Madonna dons all black (leather jacket, short shorts) while she hangs with rappers Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., who are wearing red and black cheerleader uniforms. Madge is also spotted hanging with football players in the same color uniforms. The debut of the video fittingly comes two days before Madonna plays in front of real cheerleaders and football players at the Super Bowl game on Sunday, where Nicki, M.I.A., Cee Lo Green and LMFAO are all rumored to be hitting the stage with her when the New England Patriots face off against the New York Giants in Indianapolis. This is going to be a big week for Madonna fans. On Friday, not only does the video for “Give Me” arrive, but the song also finally hits iTunes. Her movie “W.E.” also opens that day. “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” is the lead single off her new album M.D.N.A. , which drops March 26. Related Artists Madonna
Full-length video for Madge’s new tune will premiere day after Thursday’s ‘AI’ episode. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: Getty Images Madonna is truly an “American Idol,” so it’s probably fitting that the Queen of Pop has chosen the Fox reality show to debut a tease of the highly anticipated video for her upcoming single “Give Me All Your Luvin’. ” “AI” will premiere a preview of the video during Thursday’s episode, a day before its proper debut on Friday, which also happens to be the day the single hits iTunes (a version was leaked late last year). Fans will finally get to hear Madge, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. in all their sassiness. (Oh, yeah, Madonna’s film “W.E.” hits theaters that day too!) Along with producer Martin Solveig, Madge, Nicki and M.I.A all co-wrote “Give Me All Your Luvin’, ” while the “W.E.” director was also onboard to co-produce the track. “Luvin” is the lead single off her upcoming album, M.D.N.A., which is now set to drop on March 26, according to Idolator . Fans are just getting a glimpse of new artwork for the single, which features Madge sporting only a sweater in a trio of shots. On each sweater, there’s a star and a portion of the song’s title. In one shot, Madge has her eyes closed with her lips pursed together. In another, she’s shouting; and in the third image, she has her hands in her hair, eyes closed and a smile on her face. Other production credits for the album include William Orbit, the Demolition Crew, Marco “Benny” Benassi and Alessandro “Alle” Benassi, Hardy “Indiigo” Muanza and Michael Malih. Madonna recently spoke to MTV News about working with Orbit. “With William, I didn’t really have a discussion,” she said. “We’ve worked on stuff for so many years that we kind of finish each other’s sentences. He knows my taste and what I like. Magic happens when we get into a recording studio together.” Not enough Madonna for you? Well, she’ll hit the stage for the Super Bowl halftime show next Sunday, February 5, where, rumor has it, M.I.A., Nicki Minaj, Cee Lo Green and LMFAO will join her. While we don’t know much about her performance, the pop superstar teased that it would include a lot of pom poms. Are you excited to hear the official version of “Give Me All Your Luvin’ “?
