Black Keys, My Chemical Romance Lead Musical March Madness’ Midwest

U2, Metallica, Nickelback and more battle it out in a heavyweight region. Voting in all first-round matchups is now live! By James Montgomery U2’s Bono and Dick Vitale Photo: Getty Images MTV’s third-annual Musical March Madness tournament tipped off Monday, with voting opening in all first-round matchups. But with a bracket busting with bands — 64 in all, each battling to hoist the championship trophy when the tournament ends April 3 — we realize that choosing your favorites in each contest can be a daunting task (unless your favorite happens to be Tokio Hotel — they’re having no problem racking up the votes). After all, sometimes even the selection committee has a difficult time distinguishing between AWOLNATION and Five Finger Death Punch. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! So with first-round voting open until Sunday (polls close at midnight ET), we’re going to spend the next few days breaking down each Musical March Madness region, starting with the mighty, meaty Midwest, a bracket loaded with meat-and-potatoes rock acts … and, uh, Bon Iver, too. Can the top-seeded Black Keys run the table? Will MMM superpowers My Chemical Romance continue their tradition of deep tournament runs? Or, like last year, will the Midwest go to an upset-minded underdog, like Chevelle or Sum 41? Read on for our picks in each opening-round tilt. #1 The Black Keys vs. #16 AWOLNATION: On the surface, the Keys should win this one with ease. Then again, as any MMM historian will surely tell you, the three-year history of the tournament is littered with jaw-dropping upsets (like #16 the Hold Steady knocking off #1 Nickelback in 2010, or 16th-seeded Sum 41 dumping #1 Arcade Fire last year). Still, with so much momentum — back-to-back breakout albums, a sold-out arena U.S. arena tour — we like Auerbach and Carney over a very game Aaron Bruno. #2 Bon Iver vs. #15 Sum 41: The pride of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, faces off against the pride of Ajax, Ontario, in this opening-round barn-burner. Bon Iver was a surprise second seed in the Midwest (geography was a determining factor, as always), while one could argue that, based on last year’s MMM run alone, Sum 41 should be way higher than a 15 seed. Bad news for the bearded one, we’re taking tourney-tested Sum 41 for the upset. #3 Pearl Jam vs. #14 Five Finger Death Punch: It’s rock legends versus fast-rising, faster-playing metallers here, and though Pearl Jam currently hold a rather-sizeable lead so far, we’re not writing off Five Finger Death Punch just yet. Hard-rock bands tend to do surprisingly well in MMM (they’re fans vote equally hard), which is why, we think by week’s end, it’ll be the Death Punch who roll to round two. #4 U2 vs. #13 Modest Mouse: Last year, U2 were a surprise early exit, losing to eventual champs Green Day in round two, while Modest Mouse have never made it out of the first round of the tourney. Based on that alone, we’re taking Bono and Co. here, though, after one day of voting, this one is still pretty close. #5 My Chemical Romance vs. #12 Death Cab for Cutie: MCR are the only band in MMM history to make the Final Four twice, including a heartbreaking championship-game loss to Coheed and Cambria in 2010. Death Cab? Uh, yeah … they’ve been to the second round. Once. This one won’t even be close: MCR are going far in this tourney. #6 Kid Rock vs. #11 Chevelle: It’s Michigan versus Illinois in this first-round barnburner, which could have been an actual NCAA tournament matchup if Illinois didn’t suck so bad this year. Kid Rock has been getting in touch with his Seger side in recent years, while Chevelle roared back in 2011 with the (actually pretty great) Hats Off to the Bull , and so far, it’s the rockers who hold a commanding lead over the Kid. Can they hold on? We’ll say they do, and advance to the second round. #7 Metallica vs. #10 Guns N’ Roses: A true clash of the titans, this one could go either way (though it hopefully won’t end like the pair’s 1992 Montreal show did, with both James Hetfield and the city set on fire). Understandably, this one is currently the closest matchup in the entire tournament, with the Gunners holding a .02 percent edge. There’s a whole week still to go, but this one might be too close to call. #8 Nickelback vs. #9 Rise Against!: A total style clash in every conceivable way, Rise Against! jumped out to an early lead, but thanks to some feverish tweeting , Nickelback have swung things in their favor. It’s still close, but we think Kroeger and Co. pull it out — if only because we suspect a Black Keys/Nickelback second-rounder will be, uh, interesting . MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament is underway! Voting in the first round runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 18, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Videos Musical March Madness Returns! ‘The Voice’ Sends Home Six More Singers In Battle Rounds

Whitney Myer and Sarah Golden are among the contestants sent packing on Monday night. By John Mitchell “The Voice” judges Cee-Lo, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton Photo: Getty Images Last week on “The Voice,” the battle rounds began and Monday night (March 12), they continued with a bang as judges Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton chose six more hopefuls to continue on to the live shows … and sent six others home. With a recording contract with Universal Republic Records on the line, the stakes couldn’t be higher for this diverse group of mega-talented singers. Team Christina First up was Team Xtina and two of her most soulful vocalists, hotel clerk Sera Hill and 51-year-old Geoff McBride. Gathered around the piano, the pair wowed Xtina with their powerhouse voices and the coach seemed in her element working with two seasoned vocalists. Sera was paired with mentor Jewel, who complimented the emotion she brought to Aretha Franklin’s classic “Chain of Fools.” Geoff was teamed with Lionel Richie and seemed at first in awe of the pop legend. “When Geoff walked in, his delivery was unbelievable,” Richie said. “[But] he’s got to give us the personality, he’s got to give us the character.” Adam felt Geoff was more “in the moment” during their face-off in “The Voice’s” pop boxing ring, but said that Hill put on “an excellent show.” Christina complimented Sera’s technique throughout both the rehearsals and the final performance, saying she admired the preciseness of her vocal runs. Ultimately, Sera’s ability to hit her notes and execute her ad libs was enough to carry her though the tough showdown and get Xtina’s vote of approval. For her second pairing, Christina pitted her two most unique voices, Lindsey Pavao and Lee Koch, against each other to tackle Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box.” Jewel encouraged Lee to really learn the song (Lindsey is a big Nirvana fan and already knew the song inside out) and make Kurt Cobain’s highly personal lyrics his own. Their performance was “inventive and original,” according to Cee Lo. Adam chose some different adjectives, calling their take “delightfully creepy,” while complimenting the pair on delivering a truly unique take on Nirvana’s song. Impressed with the character and improvement she brought to her vocal, Aguilera chose Lindsey. “What tipped the scales was that Lindsey is extremely versatile in her vocal approach,” Aguilera said, “and I can’t wait to see what becomes of her.” Team Blake “I chose Lex versus Charlotte for a very simple reason: their personalities,” Shelton said when he announced that outgoing Jersey girl Charlotte Sometimes would hit the ring against the more quiet Lex Land to sing Foster the People’s hit “Pumped Up Kicks.” Lex is admittedly very shy, and Blake wanted to see if being paired with the much more extroverted Charlotte would bring her out of her shell — something he believes she needs if she wants to succeed on the show. And while Lex did rise to the challenge by stepping out of her comfort zone and bringing her distinct and sultry sound to the song, she also had some pitch problems. Charlotte didn’t have any such issues, and Shelton chose her more consistent vocal performance to move forward. Team Cee Lo For his first battle of the night, Cee Lo went with two very different singers, gravel-voiced rocker Juliet Simms and folk singer Sarah Golden, singing Rod Stewart’s “Stay With Me.” Sarah was teamed with Babyface, who supported Sarah’s choice to keep close to her simple, folky roots. “The only way I’m going to beat Juliet is to stay true to who I am,” Sarah admitted. “The only thing I would tell you is to pick your spots,” mentor Ne-Yo told Juliet, recommending she not over-sing the song, but rather pick the right moments to let her unique voice shine. Juliet delivered the raspy vocal Cee Lo expected, and while Blake was a fan of how Sarah’s unique, near-country delivery complimented the band’s shredding guitars, the other judges urged Cee Lo to go with Juliet … which he did. Cee Lo’s final pairing of the night was an emotional one — the music Renaissance man paired Jamar Rogers and Jamie Lono to take on Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Though the two had become good friends, in a winner-take-all competition like “The Voice,” it’s every man for himself. Jamie was having trouble with his voice cracking throughout rehearsals, and mentor Babyface advised him to “do what your voice tells you.” Paired with Ne-Yo, Jamar got the encouragement he needed. Ne-Yo told the young singer that a song like “I Wanna Know What Love Is” is all about the emotion the singer brings to it. And Jamar certainly has plenty of life experience to draw upon — the young man was once a heavy drug user who overcame his addiction, but as a result of his drug use contracted HIV. “If I win this, it will be a victory for anyone who has ever overcome anything,” Jamar said on his way into the battle ring. Jamar’s strong vocal performance won over Adam and Christina, while Jamie’s style earned Blake’s vote. But the final decision was Cee Lo’s, and he chose Jamar to move forward to the live shows. Both singers were left in tears singing the other’s praises during their interviews following their performance. Team Adam Whitney Myer, who got all four judges to turn their chairs during the blind auditions, found her nerves wracked immediately when Adam paired her with Kim Yarbrough, a far more seasoned vocalist who is two decades her senior. Both Adam and mentor Alanis Morissette encouraged the young singer to not even try to overpower Yarbrough but instead opt to spotlight the strong personality in her own voice. Kim’s mentor Robin Thicke pushed for her to embrace the emotion of the song and not focus so intently on showing off her already-developed chops. “I truly felt like I was watching one of those diva concerts,” Blake said of the vocal Olympics that was Kim and Whitney’s performance of Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama.” Unable to be of any assistance, Blake declared, “I pick Carson [Daly].” Meanwhile, both Christina and Cee Lo picked Kim, feeling the song better fit Kim’s more mature vocal. It was a tough decision that clearly weighed on him heavily, but Adam ultimately sided with his fellow judges and chose Kim. Moving on

Santigold Gets Real On Master Of My Make-Believe

New album is about ‘accepting that your fantasy is actually your reality,’ Santi tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Santigold When it came time for Santigold to begin work on the follow-up to her breakout self-titled debut, she had to change more than just her name; she had to readjust her entire view on reality. “I really had to get a grasp on what the process was for this record … and what I was experiencing. And, really, the process for me of making this record was mastering my make-believe,” she said. “It was really about navigating through my own reality; navigating through my mind, my emotions and realizing that I was in control. I had to trust my vision and my creativity and really own the art I was making and own my experience in life, and claim it. I really do believe that our view on the world is what the world is; how we view ourselves is what we are … we really are in control of our lives and ourselves and our world, but only if we take control.” And take control she does on the upcoming Master of My Make-Believe, an album that is, first and foremost, a mission statement, Santi’s ode to self-empowerment and self-awareness. But despite what the title may suggest, it is most definitely not an escapist fantasy. Rather than withdraw from the increasingly surreal times in which we live, she’s suggesting we do the complete opposite. “It’s about accepting that your fantasy is actually your reality, and trusting your imagination, and trusting that your imagination is actually a real sense of knowing, ” she explained. “It was my second record, so I really wrongly thought I had it all under control going into it. I was like, ‘OK, I got this, I know how to make a record, I know who I’m working with,’ so the first thing was to realize that was completely wrong. The other thing was, last time I had John Hill sort of as my partner throughout the record; I worked with a lot of people, but John was always there. This time, the only person that was always there was me. That was a big change, and I had to grow into accepting that. It took a tremendous amount of trust in myself.” While all that may lead you to believe that Make-Believe is all heady and conceptual, well, take a listen to first single a staggering, swaggering slab of electro strut (courtesy of producer Ricky Blaze) and guitar stabs (courtesy of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner) that is — as Santi put it — very much “for the clubs.” But it’s also a lot more. “That song took me, like, three months to write the lyrics. First, Ricky sent me a track that was amazing, and visually, it reminded me of this day when me, Diplo and John Hill went out on this boat, and John was seasick; he was throwing up over the side,” she laughed. “And we were going really fast on this speedboat, and I was just holding on, sitting cross-legged on the very front of the boat, and my body was just, like, flying, like I could have been thrown off at any minute. And this guy was playing this old reggae through these little speakers, and it was blown out and distorted, and it was such a visual memory that stayed with me, and this song kind of felt like that. “But lyrically, I was trying to talk about what I want for the world and what I want people to be,” she continued. “The youth are the hope of the future, and I want people to have the courage to trust their own vision and instincts and make up the truth for themselves and question what’s told to them.” Will you check out Santigold’s new project? ‘Dark Shadows’ Photos Reveal Faithful Fashion

Vanity Fair character portraits prove Tim Burton is sticking with the aesthetic of the ’60s series. By John Mitchell Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros Another week has passed, and we still don’t have a “Dark Shadows” trailer . For those keeping tabs, we’re just over two months out (70 days, to be exact) from the scheduled release of Tim Burton’s campy vampire blockbuster. But to whet increasingly impatient fans’ appetites, in this month’s Vanity Fair, Burton and company have released some character portraits of Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard and Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman. The images — which are not yet available on Vanity Fair ‘s website but you can see here — are nothing we haven’t seen before. But hey, at least it means Warner Bros. is doing some promo, right? Taking a close look at the portraits — and, really, we might as well, because there isn’t much other “DS” material to stan over — it’s striking just how closely Burton and costume designer Colleen Atwood have kept Depp’s big-screen styling to the Barnabas “Shadows” series creator Dan Curtis developed for actor Jonathan Frid all the way back in 1967. The more we see of Depp in character, the more we’re reminded of Frid, who also appears in the film. “Johnny’s very open about what things are in the process, but he really lets people present things to him. He never really pushes at all,” Atwood told MTV News late last year about Depp’s costuming for “Shadows.” “Sometimes he doesn’t even look in the mirror in his fittings. It’s so funny. It’s pretty amazing. People would be surprised, because I think they have this image of Johnny, because he’s so stylish always, but he really feels his costumes, more than looks at them, and the movement and the feeling in them is really important.” From the hair and pale, monstrous makeup to the penchant for 18th-century bling, it’s kind of amazing how closely Burton is hewing to the look already established for the characters in the late-’60s series. And that’s true of nearly all the key players in his adaptation: He’s taken famed brunette Eva Green blonde, as Angelique (played by Lara Parker) was on the show, given Bonham Carter’s eccentric Dr. Julia Hoffman the same sweeping ’60s ‘do worn by Grayson Hall and has Pfeiffer sporting dark, regal ensembles similar to those worn by Joan Bennett to play Elisabeth Collins Stoddard. One notable exception is Chlo

Jesus Take The Prophylactic: 5 Year-Old Girl Must Undergo Numerous Tests After Attempting To Blow Up A Used Condom Found On The Playground

Ewww, gross… A 5-year-old girl is getting ready to undergo a battery of tests after she found a condom on her school playground and thought it was a balloon. The condom was found in wood chips on the playground at Acres Green Elementary School in Littleton on Thursday. “One of my daughter’s friends brought it over to my daughter and gave it to her as a gift,” the father told 7NEWS. “At that point, my daughter attempted to blow it up.” After playing with the condom, the girl put it in her pocket. “My concern is not knowing if it was used or not (and) my daughter putting it to her mouth,” the father said. We are not naming the father or girl to protect her. B-b-but wait it gets worse… 7NEWS discovered the condom the girl found on the playground was not the only one. “The school went out as soon as they found out about it and went through the playground and did find a few other items, condoms, out on the playground,” said Randy Barber, spokesman for the Douglas County School District. Says the little girl’s father about the incident: “It’s not something I ever thought I would deal with in my life or even conceive of dealing with,” said the father. “It’s real. It can happen, and I think parents need to step up and really take a stronger role in the grounds of the school and what is going on in the schools.” This is some of the most terrifying isht we ever heard of. ‘Dark Shadows’ Trailer: Where Is It, Tim Burton?

With just 77 days until the film’s release, we’re still waiting for even a taste of the campy Johnny Depp feature. By John Mitchell Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. Today is February 24. Tim Burton’s anticipated summer blockbuster adaptation of the vampire soap opera “Dark Shadows” is set to hit theaters on May 11. There are 77 days between now and the release of the film. And we still don’t have a trailer — not even a teaser. Special-effects-heavy blockbusters opening much later in the summer, including July’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” have already debuted multiple trailers to satisfy the bloodlust of fans hungry for just a taste of the movies they are counting down the days for. But we “Shadows” devotees have been kept waiting in the dark too long, not unlike Barnabas (Johnny Depp) locked up in a coffin and hidden away in the Collins family mausoleum. But lo, what’s that in the distance I hear? Buzz that consumer surveying of two potential trailers, a shorter teaser and longer full trailer, took place earlier this week. To be fair to all involved, by “buzz” we really mean “Internet gossip,” but it’s pretty much in line with what we’ve been able to pull together about the film from interviews with Burton and Helena Bonham Carter from late last year — namely that the director is injecting the film with an undercurrent of dark comedy. The GIF warriors over at Oh No They Didn’t got word on Tuesday from a variety of tipsters that testing on varied trailers was underway. And the buzz is … good? We’ve long been hopeful that the film would be “vintage Burton.” By that we mean dark, weird and kind of funny, and from what the ONTD tipsters are saying, that’s exactly what we may be getting. At his best, the director was capable of a balancing act few others would dare attempt. He made us care about a very odd man who had scissors for hands, after all, and laugh at the strange and colorful suburban world around him. Much of the comedy in the film appears to stem from Barnabas’ trouble acclimating to the modern world (well, 1972) when he is aroused from his centuries-long slumber by Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley). According to tipster Ross2287, Depp’s delivery is spot on when he hears a car for the first time and calls out, “Show yourself Satan!” Later, during a fight with Eva Green’s evil witch Angelique, Depp earned laughs from the audience when he requested she “strategically place your wonderful lips upon my posterior and kiss it repeatedly.” More choice one-liners arise when Barnabas is introduced to his descendants. Based on these accounts of the alleged in-the-works trailers, it’s looking like the always lovable Chloe Moretz (who plays Caroline Collins) may well be a scene stealer. When Depp’s Barnabas is introduced to her and finds out she is 15, he can’t help but warn, “And no husband? You must put those birthing hips to good use at once lest your womb shrivel up and die.” Later, in what is said to be the full-length trailer, Depp sees television for the first time and is astounded, asking, “What sorcery is this?” before he rips the back panel off and yells, “Reveal yourself, tiny songstress!” Moretz then looks to her 200-year-old vampire cousin and says, “Are you stoned or something?” Is any of this even true? Looks like we’ll have to wait and see, though we decided to run with it because it’s all we have. Do you hear that, Tim Burton? It’s all we have. When it comes to this trailer, we can’t help but repeat one of Depp’s lines from the alleged mystery trailer: “Show yourself!” Do you think the ONTD tipsters have it right? Is Tim Burton readying a dark comedy with his “Dark Shadows” adaptation? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @JohnMitchell83 with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns! LMFAO Make No Apologies In ‘Sorry For Party Rocking’ Video

RedFoo and Sky Blu throw epic house party in cartoon-like clip featuring David Hasselhoff. By Jocelyn Vena LMFAO Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images First they had us shufflin’. Then they introduced us to the wiggle. And for their latest video , for the club-thumping track “Sorry for Party Rocking,” the guys of LMFAO are throwing the ultimate cartoon-like house party. The clip, which premiered Monday night, opens with an older couple (played by LMFAO’s Sky Blu and RedFoo) arguing over the ruckus of a nearby house party, hosted by LMFAO’s very own Sky and Red. When the older gentleman makes his way over to the party to complain, he gets the door slammed in his face. Inside the party, the guys and their colorful crew are wearing their animal-print and neon-colored clothes, dancing and drinking the night away. When they refuse to shut down the party, the older man calls the police. But instead of shutting it down, they join the madness. So does everyone else: from pizza delivery guys and sexy nurses to truck drivers and David Hasselhoff (who appeared with the guys onstage during their 2011 American Music Awards performance). And, while the older man is trying to shut the party down, he finds his wife inside enjoying the festivities. Who could not be charmed by a house party thrown by Red and Sky? As the video begins to come to a close, RedFoo falls over from all the good times. When he is whisked away by an ambulance, he drops his phone, which is later picked up by someone who begins to party rock to “Anthem.” Christopher “Kid” Reid (from Kid’N’Play , who know a thing or two about house parties) arrives at the scene as the party seems to be winding down to complain about all the noise. In the final seconds, the video very quickly references the hospital scene that opens the group’s very memorable “Party Rock Anthem” video , where they fought off a zombie-like dancing epidemic. Perhaps this party had something to do with the origins of the plague in that video. Directed by Mickey Finnegan (who directed “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It” as well as clips for Cee Lo Green and Soulja Boy), the whole video takes place in a world made up of cardboard cutouts and animations, making it a surreal escape. The video includes smooth dances moves from former “America’s Best Dance Crew” dance crews Quest Crew and the Beat Freaks. What do you think of LMFAO’s new video? Leave your comment below! Green Day Start Recording New Album

Band hits the studio on Valentine’s Day to begin sessions for follow-up to 2009’s 21st Century Breakdown. By James Montgomery Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News While you were wasting time with flowers, candy and/or restraining orders on Valentine’s Day, Green Day were getting down to business, beginning sessions for a brand-new album. That’s according to frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who broke the news (and a four-month Twitter hiatus) on his personal account Tuesday — and coined a rather amazing euphemism for recording in the process. “Happy Valentine’s Day!” he tweeted . “Officially started recording the new record today. It’s F— TIME!!!!” Yes, we’re aware “It’s F— Time” is also a song by Green Day’s side-project, the Foxboro Hot Tubs , though it works well in the recording context too, so we’re sticking with it. No word on just who Green Day have brought in to helm said f— time (an email to their publicist was not responded to by press time), but the sessions will bring forth the first studio album since the band’s 2009 effort 21st Century Breakdown. Last year, they played a secret show in California that included a reported 15 new songs, though it’s not known if those songs will make the new album. Of course, as any Green Day fan will surely tell you, Valentine’s Day also holds a rather significant place in the band’s lore: In 2003, the band recorded an entire album called Cigarettes and Valentines, though the master tapes were supposedly stolen, and the band decided to scrap the project in favor of the album that would reinvigorate their career: American Idiot. During the band’s 21st Century Breakdown world tour, they began working the title track from that lost album into their set list, and it made the cut for the 2011 live album, Awesome as F—. And with that, we’ve officially set a new record for most uses of the F-word in an MTV News story. History in the making, people! Are you excited for new Green Day music? Let us know in the comments!
