Of Course Jean-Claude Van Damme Went Method On The Set Of Expendables 2

Some time after turning down a role in 2010’s Expendables (the part he was offered lacked substance, legend has it) Jean-Claude Van Damme thought better of opting out of the Sylvester Stallone throwback, which went onto become a hit. But perhaps things worked out for the best: In this week’s Expendables 2 , Van Damme steals away with the spotlight as the eccentric and hilariously disdainful uber-villain Jean Vilain (yes, really) with an over-the-top performance that called for full commitment to character on set. At least, Van Damme believed his turn as Vilain required cultivating an icy rapport with his fellow action veterans on set. And so as Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger , Bruce Willis and Co. chummed it up during filming , the Muscles from Brussels stayed in character so well he only made nice after the bulk of filming wrapped. “I said to [Sylvester] Stallone, ‘How do you want me as a villain? Do you want me, like, an extravagant villain, or do you want a guy who’s completely serious and believes in what he’s doing and why he’s doing that,'” Van Damme recalled to journalists recently in Los Angeles. “Then I said, ‘By the way — why am I doing that?’ and he said, ‘Because you love money.’ I said, ‘Fine.’ So, I became that type of villain.” So committed was Van Damme to Vilain’s persona, he even found himself sneering at the crew. “When I saw all those cameras around me, I said, ‘Who are those bunch of clowns looking at us with those lenses and the lights and everything?’ I was really into the atmosphere of Expendables .” When it came to treating his peers and personal heroes like enemies, Van Damme didn’t hold back. “I’ll tell you what, those guys were like role models for me, because we have to be honest, we need to look at something to have a goal,” he recalled. “I saw Rambo . I saw Rocky . I saw Conan . I saw Die Hard . So to me, they were like heroes. I was back in Belgium watching them on the screen, buying tickets and dreaming of becoming like them. I wanted to be an actor since I was eleven, twelve years old, and now here I am and they’re chasing me.” Van Damme credits his acting skills to having worked with directors like Ringo Lam ( City on Fire ), who directed him in Maximum Risk (1996), Replicant (2001), and In Hell (2003). He counts Kirk Douglas and Charles Bronson among his screen idols and emphasizes the importance of finding truth within a scene, though his proclivity for doing something different in each take gave producer Stallone and director Simon West a challenge and a boon in the editing room. “If you do a good take,” Van Damme said, “you cannot repeat the same one.” His chilly treatment of his on-screen rivals was an extension of that truth-seeking imperative. “When I came on the set I didn’t talk to nobody,” Van Damme remembered. “I didn’t want to see them because, you know, Arnold is like bop, bop, bop and I was talking more to Stallone about the part than anything else. So, I believe, and I felt when I was looking at them, it was like, ‘Who are you?’ Nothing [in] the eyes. I felt like I didn’t like them. I took it very seriously.” “Of course, when the movie was finished I was like, ‘Hey, guys, I really admire you, but I didn’t talk to you in the beginning because I wanted to have that type atmosphere, that type of tension.’ I think you can see that when you look at the lens, when I look at all them and I’m like, ‘Go down to the floor, guys, bark all of you like dogs.’ It’s hard for me to say that to my heroes, but it was the only way, and then when the movie was going to end, that’s when I started to knock on trailers and say hello to everybody. ‘Hey, Chuck [Norris], how are you?’” Stay tuned for more from The Expendables 2 , which hits theaters Friday. Nicki Minaj to Twitter: Good F-cking Bye!

Twitter, you no longer have Nicki Minaj to kick around. On Sunday, following an exchange with a fansite that leaked one of her singles online, the hip hop star shut down her account with a very simple message: Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good f-cking bye.” Minaj had been one of the most popular celebrities on Twitter, amassing more followers than Oprah. With this move, though, she’s only the latest in a long line of stars to at least take a break from that online world. Chris Brown has deleted his account on more than one occasion, while John Mayer, Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato have all dropped out here and there, as well. All eventually returned, however. Will Nicki do the same? Only time, and fan pressure, will tell! [Photo: WENN.com]

In 1998, when he created and produced the Donny & Marie talk show, I realized that was truly the hardest working man in show biz. And, now in 2012, I will always remember him as one of the most honorable men in show business. Thank you, Dick, for every great way you encouraged me in my career. You are loved.” President Barack Obama: “With ‘American Bandstand,’ he introduced decades’ worth of viewers to the music of our times. He reshaped the television landscape forever as a creative and innovative producer. And, of course, for 40 years, we welcomed him into our homes to ring in the New Year. But more important than his groundbreaking achievements was the way he made us feel — as young and vibrant and optimistic as he was. As we say a final `so long’ to Dick Clark, America’s oldest teenager, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends — which number far more than he knew.”

New York Fashion Week Debuts Styles For All Fashionistas

MTV News talks to Whitney Port and other designers to find the latest trends that appeal to all fashion personalities. By Christina Garibaldi Whitney Port presents her collection during New York Fashion Week 2012 Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — Fall Fashion Week took over New York City as the top designers showed off their collections for the Fall/Winter 2012 season. Thousands of fashionistas descended upon Lincoln Center to get a glimpse of what will be hot for fall, but MTV News was able to give you a front-row seat to all the action. All week long, we learned about the hottest trends for the fall, and depending on what your fashion personality may be, we have found the perfect look for you. Carefree And Laid-Back Fashionista If you are more a laid-back girl who likes to glam it up every now and then, we suggest taking a look at Whitney Port’s line , Whitney Eve . The former “The City” star, who told MTV News she was “pretty nervous” about showing her line for the first time as a solo designer, mixed traditional yet fun dresses with unique patterns, perfectly translating her kaleidoscope inspiration for the collection. “This line is obviously really near and dear to my heart, I’ve been working on it for quite some time,” Port told MTV News backstage at her show. “It’s really reflective of my aesthetic, it’s kind of that easy Los Angeles girl mixed with like the little funky streety vibe of New York. [There are] really fun prints, great embellishments, lots of texture. Glitter And Glam Fashionista If you love a little glitter and glam in your wardrobe (what girl doesn’t?) then check out Alice + Olivia . Worn by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Selena Gomez and Jessica Alba , designer Stacey Bendet mixed bold colors with sequins and leather, making this line not only incredibly fashionable, but also extremely wearable. “The thing for this season was vixen Lolita character,” Bendet told MTV News about the inspiration behind her collection. “The colors are really rich. It’s sort of an interesting palate of taking these bright but rich colors and mixing it with black, white and browns in an autumnal kind of way, so it feels sort of happy, but rich and fresh. It makes you smile.” Futuristic Fashionista If you are looking to stand out in a crowd, take a peek at Michelle Smith’s collection, Milly . Her 2012 fall collection showed off a futuristic flare, catching everyone’s eye with her choice of vibrant colors of pink, greens and cobalt blue, which added a dramatic pop to her array of dresses, coats and skirts. “I started with very technological fabrics, bounded double wools, textured tweeds a lot of lamination techniques,” Smith said. “Very modern, futuristic fabrics, but they’re cut in more traditionally classic couture silhouettes.” To get a full recap of 2012 New York Fashion Week, check out MTV Style.

Jay-Z Dons The Crown As #6 Hottest MC

Legendary MC teams up with Kanye West for landmark Watch the Throne album and a spot on Hottest MCs in the Game list. By MTV News staff Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Jay-Z ‘s legacy in rap is unparalleled. Hov probably best summed up his career on 2003’s “What More Can I Say” when he spit, “There’s never been a n—a this good for this long/ This ‘hood or this pop, this hot or this strong.” But were the God MC’s past accomplishments enough to rest on in 2011? Over the past year he continued to raise the bar, teaming up with “little brother” Kanye West to drop the groundbreaking Watch the Throne album and earning himself the #6 spot on MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. “If you talk about the Throne, yeah, top five, no question. But Jay himself? From January to August, what was going on?” asked Rahman Dukes, MTV News’ director of hip-hop news, pointing out Jigga’s inactivity apart from WTT. “Kanye was moving.” Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! Indeed, Yeezy was rolling creatively after the November 2010 release of his critically acclaimed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, while Jay hadn’t dropped a solo effort since 2009, when his triumphant Blueprint III made him our #1 Hottest MC . When it came to recognizing Jay for the recent success of the Throne, however, many members of the Hip-Hop Brain Trust argued that much of the credit should go to Kanye, not Jigga. HOT STREAK Album: Watch the Throne with Kanye West as the Throne Selected Mixtapes: None Singles: “H.A.M,” “Otis” and “N—as in Paris” (as the Throne); “Glory” (featuring B.I.C.) Street Bangers: “No Church in the Wild” (as the Throne) Key Guest Appearances: Rihanna’s “Talk That Talk,” J. Cole’s “Nice Watch” and Young Jeezy’s “I Do” Meteoric Metrics: Captured another #1 with now-platinum Watch the Throne, scored a #1 Rap hit with “N—as in Paris” and topped Forbes’ Hip-Hop’s Top Earners list Business Ventures: New Jersey Nets minority owner broke ground on Brooklyn’s Barclay Center arena, where he plans to move the NBA team Tours: Grossed more than $448 million on the Watch the Throne Tour, played two dates at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall Monumental Moment: Hov and Yeezy did what no superstar rapper in recent memory has been able to do: kept their album from leaking and thus created a moment Forecast: Jay’s no stranger to the “Hottest MCs in the Game” list. It’s a safe bet that Hov will be back next year if he releases his planned solo album and the WTT follow-up. “You can’t divorce [the album] from Kanye. It really feels like Jay rode shotgun on it,” said Rebecca Thomas, an editor/writer at MTV News. “That project has Kanye’s footprints and handprints all over it.” The truth is, outside of WTT, Hov didn’t do the kinds of things that help an MC bolster his stats. Instead, the rap mogul was focused on his many business ventures — from his Brooklyn-bound Nets to re-launching the 40/40 Club in New York. Although few could argue that when he released “Glory,” days after the birth of daughter Blue Ivy Carter, he created quite the musical moment. And it was hard to ignore the impact and cultural significance of Watch the Throne, even if Jay’s contribution was collaborative, not solo. Bypassing a traditional album rollout, the Throne serviced only two records to radio prior to their LP release: “H.A.M.” and “Otis.” They also went with a digital-only release initially, electing to postpone sending physical copies of WTT to stores until four days later. The pair placed a premium on their music — and it paid off. They avoided an album leak , a near impossibility in the digital era. When the joint LP was finally released on August 8, it seemed as if the entire hip-hop community was listening at the same time, dissecting it on Twitter and spawning multiple trending topics. It hit #1 on iTunes in 23 different countries a day later. “At the end of the day, that album is an ‘event album.’ You’re never going to get an album like that ever again,” said Yomi Desalu, MTV’s senior director of music and talent. When first-week sales were tallied, the Throne had sold 436,000 copies and landed at #1 on the Billboard 200. The album’s third single (second, if you don’t count bonus track “H.A.M.”) proved to be its biggest. “N—as in Paris” not only topped Billboard ‘s Rap chart, it became a quick fan favorite that prompted the Throne to perform the track multiple times at each stop on their tour. So when it comes to the “Hottest MCs” criteria, Hov largely hits the major points. He has proven his impact on the game is enduring and maintained a buzz in the streets, even if he didn’t make as much noise in early 2011. Jigga was a lock in the sales department and, at 42 years old, he remains among rap’s top lyricists. On “Otis,” he reminded fans who invented swag, so style wasn’t a problem, and Jay had enough side hustles that you could write a book about them. (Seriously, you could: check Zack O’Malley’s “Empire State of Mind: How Jay-Z Went From Street Corner to Corner Office.”) Perhaps a solo LP would’ve given Jay that extra push. Makes us wonder what might go down on Hottest MCs VIII if Hov does drop that tentatively planned 12th solo album and a second Throne LP . Who gon’ stop him then? Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch ” MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts ,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT before capping the night off with ” Sucker Free Certified ” at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Avril Lavigne Says ‘Wish You Were Here’ Single ‘Feels Right’

Song about missing someone ‘represents the album’ well, singer says. By Jocelyn Vena Avril Lavigne Photo: MTV News Avril Lavigne lets her guard down on her Goodbye Lullaby single “Wish You Were Here.” The poignant track is about pining away for that one person you let slip away. The emotional pull of the track, produced by Max Martin and Shellback, is the perfect tune for anyone who’s not able to be with the ones they love this holiday season. “I’m excited about ‘Wish You Were Here’ being the single because it’s a ballad and the song kind of represents the album definitely more so than the first single,” she told MTV News about the song, which she performed during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade last week. “That was kind of more my older stuff and more pop rock and aggressive and a lighter subject. Goodbye Lullaby, for me, was a record that I was writing for myself.” “Wish You Were Here” and its simple, Dave Meyers-directed video really sum up the album for Lavigne. “It was more raw and stripped-down and more emotional and I wasn’t holding back,” she said of working on the album. “[It’s] sort of more song driven and the production was mainly just like a lot of acoustic guitars and loops and just all about the vocal; the vocal being clear and having an honest emotion to it. And saying that, yeah, the first two singles [ ‘What the Hell’ and ‘Smile’] were more pop rock, and so now finally with this one, ‘Wish You Were Here,’ being released, it feels right.” The song comes from a place deep inside and is very much about someone in Lavigne’s life. “I love this song. I like this song because I wrote it about missing somebody and that’s something that we all go through at some point in our lives,” she explained. “It’s just about looking back and remembering all those good times you shared with somebody, all the crazy moments. And that’s life. We all experience that at some point, but it has a positive message.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Avril Lavigne Related Artists Avril Lavigne
