Busta Rhymes Recalls LONS’ ‘Yo! MTV Raps’ Breakup

‘I’ll never forget that day,’ Busta says of his group’s 1993 split on set of classic MTV show, which returns Sunday on MTV2. By Rob Markman, with additional reporting by Rahman Bugg Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News “Yo! MTV Raps” meant so much to so many people. More than just a weekly video show, “Yo!” brought fans into the then-undocumented worlds of their favorite rap stars. ” ‘Yo! MTV Raps,’ just in a nutshell, gave everybody an opportunity to look at artists as real people,” Busta Rhymes told MTV News of the groundbreaking series, which will make a return on Sunday on MTV2 at 12 a.m. ET. “You saw us when we were upset, you saw us when we were happy, you saw us when we were beefin’, you saw us when we were celebrating some sh–.” For Busta, who started his career as a member of the 1990s Long Island, New York, rap quartet Leaders of the New School , “Yo! MTV Raps” documented one of the most pivotal moments in his career. “Leaders of the New School broke up on ‘Yo! MTV Raps,’ with Fab Five Freddy hosting it,” Busta recalled. “I’ll never forget that day.” It was 1993 and LONS had just released their second album, T.I.M.E. (The Inner Mind’s Eye), which was anchored by their #1 Billboard Hot Rap Single “What’s Next.” Still, despite their growth as a group, Busta Rhymes and member Charlie Brown began collaborating with other acts as soloists. Bus had already delivered a scene-stealing verse on A Tribe Called Quest’s 1991 “Scenario” and appeared on Heavy D’s “A Bunch of N—as” with a then-unknown Notorious B.I.G. Brown had opened up doors for himself as well, also appearing on “Scenario” and Funkmaster Flex’s “Nuttin’ but Flavor” with Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Biz Markie. “Me and C. Brown, we ain’t really dig each other for a long time,” Busta said, citing a silent competition between him and his former bandmate. During the 1993 episode of “Yo!” all the members introduced themselves for the camera, shouting out Leaders in the same breath — all except Brown. “Just lounging, getting to know myself and what my capabilities are and what I’m gonna do in life,” he said. “The cameras is rolling and we’re looking at each other like, what the f— this n—a talkin’ about,” Busta recalled. “We’re steppin’ to Brown beefin’ like, ‘What is this?’ [And he’s like,] ‘I don’t wanna be in the group no more.’ ” Busta Rhymes went on to release his solo debut The Coming in 1996 and has enjoyed one of the most storied careers in hip-hop. On November 17, the Dungeon Dragon announced his latest deal with Cash Money Records and Google Music, but despite all of his highlights, the LONS split ultimately made Busta who he is today. “That was just a big moment. That was a defining moment for me,” he said. Watch “MTV2 Presents: Yo! ‘Wolverine’ R Rating Not ‘Off The Table,’ Hugh Jackman Says

‘There is even talk about us doing two versions,’ actor tells MTV News. By Kevin Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Hugh Jackman Photo: MTV News After months of delayed start dates and a change of directors, the best thing Wolverine fans have going for them is a star who is just as eager to get the man with the adamantium claws back on the screen. Hugh Jackman stopped by MTV News and gave an update on “The Wolverine,” its potential R rating, whether any familiar faces from the Marvel Universe would show up and a new hint about the setting. As of now, the darker follow-up to 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” has a director in James Mangold but no definite start date. So what should fans expect from “The Wolverine” once filming begins in Japan? First of all, there will be more locations. “Not all of it takes place in Japan. That’s my other little tip for you,” Jackman told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. Japan, up until now, had been a focal point for the concept of the film, which centers on Logan’s encounters with samurai. How Wolverine’s native Canada plays into the equation is yet to be seen. Any talk of taking the franchise “darker” is going to welcome the follow-up question, “Well, how dark?” In the case of “The Wolverine,” many older fans have held on to the hope of a more realistic, R-rated sequel, as sharp objects like adamantium claws tend to result in blood. “There’s such great temptation to make an R-rated ‘Wolverine.’ I’ve always felt that, and I know a lot of fans would like that,” Jackman said. “If there’s ever going to be a superhero that is going to be R-rated, it’s going to be Wolverine.” And while an R rating isn’t “off the table,” there are considerations to be made, specifically the character’s younger fans. “You see it in their eyes. He’s everything to them,” said Jackman, who’s concerned with alienating those fans with an R-rated film. “You need to have a really good reason to exclude those fans.” In the meantime, Jackman and Mangold may have come up with one possible solution to their rating dilemma. “There is even talk about us doing two versions, as in finding a way to do both while you shoot it, which could be really cool.” With Wolverine, there is always the unique question of the X-Men timeline and who might show up to the party, because the ageless mutant can more or less pop up in any era since the beginning of the 19th century. Jackson was less talkative on the subject of whether we’d see some familiar faces, but suggested that most of the cast would be filled with new characters, possibly leaving room for a cameo or two. Ever since “3:10 to Yuma” director James Mangold stepped in to replace Darren Aronofsky , the biggest obstacle has been Jackman’s starring role opposite Russell Crowe in Tom Hooper’s “Les Mis

Mary J. Blige To Celebrate My Life With Concert

New York show will be November 23, two days after Blige releases My Life II. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Mary J. Blige Photo: Mike Coppola/ Getty Images The true measure of a classic album is not its immediate impact, but rather its ability to stand the test of time. On November 29, 1994, Mary J. Blige released her groundbreaking My Life LP, and on November 23, almost 17 years to the day, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul will be celebrating with a special Mary J. Blige My Life concert at New York’s Terminal 5. “I think My Life is so relevant now and will always be relevant. It’s etched in stone in the music world and people’s personal lives because it was the very first time that someone said something that people were thinking,” Mary told MTV News while on the set of her “Mr. Wrong” video. “I was speaking from my own life and my own trials and tribulations. Turns out four million other people were feeling the exact same thing at the same time.” Soul-baring songs like “I’m Going Down,” “Be Happy” and the LP’s title track painted a picture of a love-torn woman on a road of self-discovery. The RIAA has certified the album three-times platinum, and My Life was named one of Rolling Stone ‘s 50 Essential Women in Rock Albums and 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. With all of the LP’s accolades, it makes sense for MJB to revisit her classic work. Just two days before the show, Blige is scheduled to release My Life II … The Journey Continues (Act I). “When something that big hits the universe — it’s a big deal. I think that’s why it’s around: It’s a self-help book to remind people of how far they’ve come or to let them know somebody can relate to your pain as well,” MJB said of the original 1994 album before relating it to the sequel. “And that’s what this album is about as well.” Tickets for Mary J. Blige’s November 23 My Life Concert are on sale now at Live Nation and start at $105. Related Artists Mary J. Blige

By Rob Markman Cali Swag District Photo: Courtesy of Checkmate Music Group/Capitol Records Cali Swag District has been making quite a few headlines of late. That’s not all; G-Unit’s newest addition Shawty Lo will be making an appearance on “RapFix Live” too. In June, the Atlanta rapper confirmed that he signed with 50’s crew . New Yorkers Celebrate ‘Groundbreaking’ Gay Marriage Passage

‘This couldn’t have come at a better time,’ says Gay Pride Week participant outside the Stonewall Inn. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker Photo: Spencer Platt/Getty Images NEW YORK — With the historic passing of the same marriage equality bill in New York State on Friday night, the streets of the city have since been flooded with excited members of the LGBT community and other supporters on what just happens to be Gay Pride Week. Crowds of people have continued to drop by the Stonewall Inn, the famous site that has come to be known as the birthplace of the world’s gay rights movement following the infamous “Stonewall riots” that followed a police raid on the bar in 1969. Erin Healy of Albany, New York, recalled the groundbreaking moment. “I was with my friends last night and everyone was like, ‘The bill’s going to get passed!’ So we were like, ‘Turn on the news!’ and then all of a sudden it was like, ’29 to 33, it’s passed!’ ” “I just think this is such a groundbreaking moment in gay history,” expressed 21-year-old Brianna McDonald. “This vote was so important to the young crowd because it actually gives us something to look forward to, to get married if we want to.” “We are in the gayest part of town!” laughed Tony Benninelli of Queens, who was out with his friends in the West Village celebrating Gay Pride. “This couldn’t have come at a better time.” Jesse Kissel was especially keen on noting the part that both the Stonewall Inn and New York City played when it came to this epic moment. “This is where it all started,” he smiled. “This was where the revolution began, where people started realizing that we need rights and privileges.” The passing of the act gave Miami resident Jorge Orobitg a new hope for his own state. “New York is a big state,” he said, “so that means we’re heading in the right direction.” ( Read how California residents reacted to the news. ) “Hopefully, this will sprout a nationwide thing,” Erin Healy said. “It’s just something ridiculous to me that it’s taken even this long to happen.” Share your reactions to New York’s same-sex marriage bill on Facebook. Rakim Calls His Longevity In Rap Game ‘A Blessing’

‘The MC’s life span in the game is maybe seven years, 10 years, 12 years,’ pioneering MC reflects to MTV News on 25th anniversary of Paid in Full. By Rob Markman Black Thought and Rakim Photo: MTV News In the 1980s, critics largely labeled hip-hop a passing fad, refusing to believe that the budding art form would grow into a respected genre. So for hip-hop pioneer Rakim , celebrating the 25th anniversary of his and DJ Eric B.’s 1987 debut album, Paid in Full, is rather humbling. “It’s a blessing to be in the game this long and to have your work recognized after 25 years,” Rakim told MTV News on Wednesday from his dressing room after performing the first of two shows with the Roots at legendary New York jazz club the Blue Note. Even though the RIAA’s website lists Paid in Full ‘s original release date as July 9, Rakim Allah celebrated early with Philadelphia’s (and “Late Nate With Jimmy Fallon” house band) the Roots. Together they ran through select cuts from the groundbreaking album. Fans were treated to spirited renditions of PIF classics like “Eric B. Is President” and “I Ain’t No Joke,” as well as other favorites like 1992’s “Juice (Know the Ledge).” “It’s a big thing,” Rakim said of the occasion. “The MC’s life span in the game is maybe seven years, 10 years, 12 years, so to be around and to get respect at this point is a blessing.” Roots rapper Black Thought can still remember the impact of Paid in Full and how “The R” changed things in hip-hop, particularly by introducing the teachings of the Five-Percent Nation to rap. Five Percenters, as the Nation’s followers are called, brought a heightened sense of spirituality to the music with their ideologies based on many Islamic principles. “Pre- Paid in Full, you didn’t hear too many records — there were MCs out there, I used to hear some types with MCs rapping about having knowledge of self and dealing with that type of spirituality — but before Rakim, like, pre- Paid in Full, it wasn’t out there like that. It was very much still a rarity,” Thought said. Ra opened the door for Five-Percent MCs, most notably, the Wu-Tang Clan who based many of their songs on the Nation’s teachings. But that wasn’t all. With Paid in Full, Rakim is credited not only with introducing a more sophisticated vocabulary to hip-hop, but also more complex flows and rhythms and an interlaced rhyme structure. “I’m not saying lyrics or rap was simple or simplistic before that,” Black Thought said, “but the complexity of it, the musicality of it changed after Rakim came out.” Share your memories of Paid in Full in the comments below!
