‘Expendables’ Takes Top Box Office Spot

The action flick is expected to rake in a weekend total of $35 million. By Mawuse Ziegbe Dolph Lundgren and Sylvester Stallone in “The Expendables” Photo: Millennium Films The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Expendables” ($11.9 million) #2 “Eat Pray Love” ($8.2 million) #3 “The Other Guys” ($6.8 million) #4 “Inception” ($ 4.6 million) #5 “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” ($3.5 million) The action-packed hiney-kicking flick “The Expendables” continues to stomp box-office competition. The Sylvester Stallone-helmed vehicle, which was written and directed by Sly, was the #1 movie on Saturday with $11.8 million. The pulpy throwback to the firepower-packed ’80s films that Sly favored back in the day, was also the top draw at theaters on Friday as well. Featuring a cornucopia of muscled-up stars like Terry Crews and Mickey Rourke, the film is on track to own the entire weekend with an estimated $35 million in ticket sales. The big-screen version of Elizabeth Gilbert’s smash memoir, “Eat Pray Love, ” had a strong showing as well, pulling in $8.1 million. Droves of moviegoers checked out Academy Award-winning screen queen Julia Roberts munch and muse her way to enlightenment on Saturday and pushed the film to the #2 spot. “Love,” which also stars Javier Bardem and James Franco, held the second-place spot for the second night in a row after taking in $8.5 million on Friday. The film is expected to make $23.7 million over the weekend. “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” pulled in a modest $3.5 million on Saturday. The movie, which features Michael Cera as a determined beau ready to battle his new gal pal’s ex-boyfriends, continued to slog through the weekend as the third-place debut. Although the CGI-laden flick makes “Scott” a rom-com for the digital generation, the film wasn’t able to overtake the top two debuts, which tout well-worn screen names such as Roberts and Stallone. “Scott” is expected to pull through the weekend with $10.5 million. ‘The Expendables’ Wins Friday Box Office

‘Eat Pray Love’ takes the #2 slot. By ‘Eat Pray Love’ takes the #2 slot. Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone and Randy Couture in “The Expendables” Photo: Lionsgate The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Expendables” ($13.3 million) #2 “Eat Pray Love” ($8.5 million) #3 “The Other Guys” ($5.6 million) #4 “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” ($4.6 million) #5 “Inception” ($3.4 million) It appears it’s not summer of love for Julia Roberts’ much-anticipated, Ryan Murphy-helmed, soul-searching flick “Eat Pray Love.” The film version of the best-selling Elizabeth Gilbert memoir opened on Friday (August 13) in second place, behind the action star-studded movie, “The Expendables.” The hard-charging “Expendables,” which features a slew of beefy stars like Sylvester Stallone, Terry Crews and Mickey Rourke, debuted with 13.3 million, easily besting “Love” which raked in $8.5 million. The cop comedy “The Other Guys,” armed with an all-star cast that includes Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, dropped off to third place with $9 million after bowing at the top spot last week. “Scott Pilgrim v. The World,” which follows funnyman Michael Cera as he clashes with his girlfriend’s army of ex-lovers in several video game-themed scuffles, took fourth place with $5.7 million. The Christopher Nolan juggernaut “Inception” is still captivating moviegoers, taking in $3.4 million to land in fifth place. Friday’s haul tips the film’s total domestic gross over the $240 million mark. “Step Up 3D,” which features dancers such as Alyson Stoner and Stephan Boss in the third installment in the footwork franchise, failed to crack the top 5 in its second week in theaters. The dance movie took in $2.3 million last night with “Despicable Me” not far behind with $2.2 million. Both movies were closely followed by the Steve Carell-Paul Rudd vehicle “Dinner for Schmucks” which brought in $2 million. The action thriller “Salt,” featuring a raven-haired Angelina Jolie as a spy on the run, picked up $1.8 million.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Expendables,” “Eat Pray Love” and “The Other Guys.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com. ‘The Other Guys’ Uses Michael Moore Tactics to Vilify CEOs, Investors, Wall Street

When the credits are the most intriguing part of the movie, there’s a problem. In the new film “The Other Guys,” starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, two mismatched cops try to make a name for themselves by investigating a potential Ponzi scheme run by a corrupt investor. The villain is a pseudo-Bernie Madoff but rather than vilifying a single fraud, director Adam McKay (“Anchorman,” “Step Brothers”) lumped all investors together and attacked Wall Street as a whole. “The Other Guys” is a funny but not hilarious movie for 1 hour and 47 minutes but instead of simply rolling the credits and letting viewers leave smiling, McKay followed with graphics criticizing Wall Street and corporate executives. It was almost as if Michael Moore filmed the closing credits, as graphics included the anatomy of a Ponzi scheme, the ratio of CEO to employee salaries, a comparison of the New York Police Department’s pension fund to an average CEO’s pension fund, an average worker’s 401(k) account compared to a CEO’s, and the amount of taxes Goldman Sachs paid after the bailout. While the credits provided the most egregious anti-business attacks, there were other subtle pokes at business and Republicans within the film. For example, the villain, named David Ershon (whose last name rhymes eerily with ‘Enron’), is seen in a photograph with former President George W. Bush and is said to be friends with conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Other chides included Ershon stealing from both the lottery and the NYPD pension fund — essentially stealing money from the state and a labor union — and the villains’ drive SUV’s while the heroes drive a Toyota Prius. The film grossed $35.5 million its opening weekend and has been a hit with film critics in the liberal media. According to  rottentomatoes.com , “The Other Guys” has a 77 percent “fresh” rating from critics, with The Washington Post giving it a B and Entertainment Weekly giving it an A-. Of course, the film reviewers have reveled in the anti-Wall Street message, such as Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman: “A Wall Street villain (Steve Coogan) who embodies the sins of our time with a relative absence of cheek.” A.O. Scott, film critic for The New York Times, was disappointed by the “tease” of the end credits and pined for a stronger attack: “It may be that no team can humble the unrepentant fat cats of the financial sector, but it would be nice to give Mr. Ferrell and Mr. Wahlberg a shot.” In a way, Scott is correct: the film would have been a fun, goofy movie but the end credits suggested something more. It was almost as if McKay was adamant about attacking Wall Street but wasn’t confident that the film’s plot executed his attack, so he included the graphics at the end to reinforce his message. Given that McKay is a guest blogger for The Huffington Post and Ferrell’s history of impersonating Bush, another Hollywood film with a liberal agenda shouldn’t be a surprise. As the Business & Media Institute noted, TV characters are  21 times more likely to be killed by a businessman than the mob , and  50 percent of the villains  in 2005’s Oscar-nominated movies were businessmen. However, these movies relied on their plots and characters to promote their liberal agendas rather than colorful graphics over the end credits. Like this article? Mark Wahlberg Would Only Rap Again If Justin Bieber Asked Him

‘I’d do that for my daughter,’ Wahlberg said of a possible collaboration with the teen idol. By Jocelyn Vena Mark Wahlberg Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s been nearly two decades since Mark Wahlberg last released any music under the name Marky Mark. He hangs with a different kind of funky bunch now that he’s a certifiable Hollywood star, and he’s pretty much given up on going back behind the mic — although that could change if Justin Bieber, who is already pals with the likes of Diddy, Drake and Usher , came calling. “No. Not a chance,” the star of “The Other Guys” initially responded to a Time.com reader who asked if he’d ever return to the rap world. But then he softened a bit: “Actually, I’ll take that back. If Justin Bieber asked me, I’d do that for my daughter. She loves me to death, but she doesn’t think I’m very cool, so that might turn it around.” Wahlberg’s reluctance to going back to the hip-hop world is rooted a bit in his focus on acting. “Before Will Smith, most musicians who made movies were awful,” he explained. “When I decided to go into acting, I definitely wanted to make people forget about my music career.” While he’s not keen to jump back on the mic anytime soon, Wahlberg’s biggest regret has nothing to do with his rap career. “The one thing I will say [that I regret] is that stupid book I did [the 1992 memoir ‘Marky Mark’] that I dedicated to my penis,” he said. “I was trying to be funny and sarcastic. Of course, it’s something I get asked about all the time now.” Although he’s feeling shy about that particular life choice, it doesn’t seem to bother Bieber, who tweeted , “The Other Guys….haha…thanks Will for the one liners and Mark let’s make that rap song soon.” Would you like to see Mark Wahlberg and Justin Bieber on a track together? ‘The Other Guys’ Captures Audiences At Weekend Box Office

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s new comedy took first place from Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception.’ By Josh Wigler Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in “The Other Guys” Photo: Sony Pictures The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Other Guys” ($35.6 million) #2 “Inception” ($18.6 million) #3 “Step Up 3-D” ($15.5 million) #4 “Salt” ($11.1 million) #5 “Dinner for Schmucks” ($10.5 million) The dream is over, as Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” is no longer the reigning champion at the weekend domestic box office — that distinction now belongs to “The Other Guys.” Starring an A-List crew of comedians and action stars including Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “The Other Guys” easily took first place in its first weekend in theaters with a $35.6 million debut, marking yet another successful endeavor from frequent collaborators Ferrell and director Adam McKay. Additionally, the strong debut for “The Other Guys” demonstrates that both Ferrell and Wahlberg still have major box-office appeal, a notion that was somewhat questionable after the disappointing performances of Ferrell’s most recent “Land of the Lost” and Wahlberg’s “Max Payne.” Despite slipping from the top spot for the first time since its debut, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring “Inception” remained a strong contender at the box office this weekend, settling for second place with $18.6 million. The high-concept action flick has amassed $227.7 million at the domestic box office since opening four weeks ago. “Step Up 3D” entered the weekend competition with plenty of fanfare but only danced up an estimated $15.5 million bronze medal by Sunday’s end. It’s the weakest debut for any of the “Step Up” films to date, but not by too large of a margin. Fourth and fifth place belonged to the Angelina Jolie-starring “Salt” and comedy flick “Dinner for Schmucks” with $11.1 million and $10.5 million, respectively. Upcoming Releases Rock music, romance and video game references collide when comic book adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” arrives in theaters next weekend alongside Sylvester Stallone’s action extravaganza, “The Expendables.” The two geek-baiting films debut against the considerably less violent “Eat Pray Love,” starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem. Jonas Brothers Challenge Yankees, Kings Of Leon To Baseball Game

Before their Chicago tour kickoff, the guys pick their dream rivals for a Road Dogs game. By Jocelyn Vena Jonas Brothers get ready to kick off another Road Dogs season in Chicago Photo: Akshay Bhansali CHICAGO — On Friday (August 6), the Jonas Brothers kicked off another Road Dogs season on the eve of their big tour kickoff . They were not only there to pursue their love of all things baseball, but also to shed light on a cause they needs more attention. “We’re a part of the X the Text campaign with our sponsor Allstate, which is an amazing thing,” Kevin Jonas told MTV News only minutes before taking the field. “So many teen drivers and drivers out there have accidents texting while driving, and it’s such a [great] thing to bring awareness to this.” While this particular game was for a good cause, the guys had a few suggestions for who they’d like to see on the field at a future Road Dogs game to challenge the brothers, the band and their crew to a game. “The Yankees,” Kevin said. Nick added: “I think it’d be fun. I think the Yankees would be a challenge.” With a professional sports team chosen as a possible contender, the guys also nailed down a band they could see themselves playing against. “Kings of Leon,” Kevin said. “We challenge Kings of Leon to a game of softball. That’d be rad. They’re some Southern boys. I bet you they play some baseball.” While the guys had a good time on the field, they weren’t victorious. “Road Dogs played well,” Joe tweeted after the game. “We lost. 14-12 Next time we win.” Nick tweeted that, despite his performance, the guys couldn’t sail to victory. “We lost… But we played well. Final score 14-12,” he wrote. “We’ll get them next time. I hit a home run that was cool!” Who would you like to see out on the field against the Jonas Brothers? Share your ideas in the comments! Jonas Brothers Promise Old And New JoBros Hits On Summer Tour

‘I think from the minute you walk in to when the last note is played, it’ll be a full night of music,’ Kevin teased. By Jocelyn Vena Jonas Brothers Photo: MTV News CHICAGO — While the Jonas Brothers will be joined by Demi Lovato and a number of their “Camp Rock 2” pals for their big tour, which kicks off Saturday outside Chicago, the guys want their fans to know that this is still very much a JoBros tour. And fans will get a bonus treat, thanks to all the special guests. “When you’re coming in to see the show, I think from the minute you walk in to when the last note is played, it’ll be a full night of music and entertainment,” Kevin told MTV News during a break from rehearsals at the First Midland Bank Amphitheatre. “And we have so many friends out on the road and so many things to be able to integrate into our show.” But fans of Jonas hits like “Lovebug” and “SOS” shouldn’t fret; the guys have been making sure their own songs are getting plenty of airtime during the show. “We are doing a Jonas Brothers set, and it’s actually a lot,” Kevin added. He said fans will even be treated to some oldies but goodies. “We’re playing a lot of Jonas Brothers songs, and we’re integrating ‘Camp Rock’ and ‘JONAS L.A.’ songs [and] songs from our past. We’re really excited.” Not only should fans be excited to catch the JoBros and their pals onstage, but the show also means the guys have a lot more friends to hang out with on the road. “It’s been a lot of fun,” Joe said. “We had a great time shooting the movie with those guys, so to kind of be backstage, there’s a lot of people on this tour. It’s cool for us to hang out with them all the time.” Earlier that day at a news conference at the House of Blues , the guys said that if they did find any downtime at all, they had a few places they like to hang out in Chi-Town. “Millennium Park is always a lot of fun. On my tour back in January, I took a trip up there,” Nick said. “Also, just walking the riverfront is amazing. It’s such a beautiful city. The fans here are some of the best in the world, I think.” Will you be checking the Jonas Brothers out on tour? Let us know in the comments! Lindsay Lohan: The Pre-Prison Maxim Cover

The incarceration of Lindsay Lohan caused media mania last month. First there was her Complex spread , thrown together in the wake of her sentencing for probation violations. Now Lohan has landed the cover of Maxim . Somewhat surprisingly, the trashy men’s magazine doesn’t feature Lindsay Lohan nude except for her court-ordered ankle monitor, as we half expected. She does wear a jail-appropriate black and white striped bikini, however. Hey, it’s no orange jumpsuit cut off at the waist, but it will have to do … Lindsay Lohan apparently looked – and felt – good a week before doing time. “I am feeling strong,” she said of her imminent jail sentence for violating her probation. “I’ve experienced a lot in my life,” she added. What a warrior. “My mom has given me a lot of faith. This too shall pass.” The wreck, now being treated for drug addiction and mental issues at UCLA Medical Center following her release from jail, shared her post-rehab plans: “To focus on myself and my work and to move all press on me to focus on the work I do. Also, I’d like to do more work in India and travel to Malawi.” As for Lindsay’s advice to the fans she has left? “Stay true to yourself always. At the end of the day, you have to look at yourself in the mirror and be content with the choices you’ve made, and will make, in your life. Go with your gut!” Can she go with her gut and keep it clean?
