Actor plays title role in Sam Raimi’s ‘Wizard of Oz’ prequel, which also stars Mila Kunis, Zach Braff. He’s an Academy Award-nominated actor. He’s the author of a collection of short stories called “Palo Alto.” He directs, produces and writes his own films. He’s cast in project after project, including Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers” and the new Nick at Nite series “Hollywood Heights.” He’s even directing a documentary based on the world of pornography, all the while attending school in some fashion, as either a student or a teacher. We can hardly keep up! One of the most anticipated projects on his plate is the Disney film “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” in which Franco plays the title role alongside Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff. When MTV News caught up with the ever-talented actor, he told us that he enjoys being attached to a multitude of ventures, especially something as legendary as “Oz.” “I do like to do a lot of different things, and I think there is something really nice about being part of a bunch of institutions by being in this film,” he explained. “Disney is a place that’s been a big part of my life, and a lot of people’s lives, since I was a kid. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ has also been a huge part of my life. The [L. Frank] Baum books were some of the first books I read on my own, so I like being attached to something as iconic as this.” The film, directed by Sam Raimi , is a prequel to “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” that explains how the wizard came to power in the land. And while the cast is tight-lipped about their roles in the movie, Mila Kunis offered up a tiny explanation about her character, Theodora, to MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. “She’s a good person who gets her heart broken,” the actress explained. “What happens to young ladies when their heart gets broken?” “They turn into horrible, evil witches,” Horowitz answered. When you think of barely-legal Disney Channel celebs Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez , the first things you think of are sniffing glue, killing cats, and eating spaghetti in a filthy bathtub, right? Yeah, us either. That’s why we were surprised (to put it mildly) that Spring Breakers , starring Vanessa, Selena, and baby-faced babes Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine , is being directed by indie bad-boy Harmony Korine . Harmony put all of the above and more (like Chloe Sevigny ‘s boobs, left) into his provocative directorial debut Gummo (1998). And Korine hasn’t mellowed with age- Julien Donkey-Boy (1999) is a meditation on schizophrenia with a disturbing incest subplot, Mister Lonely (2007) stars a bizarre family of celebrity impersonators, and Trash Humpers (2009) is exactly it sounds like, a shot-on-VHS transmission from another galaxy where deviants in old-man masks hump garbage bags. So he’s a strange choice, to say the least, for a big-budget studio pic like Spring Breakers , currently filming in Florida and accompanied by a tidal wave of news coverage that usually reads something like ” OMG SELENA GOMEZ SPOTTED DRINKING WHAT WILL JUSTIN BIEBER THINK?!? ” So has Harmony sold out, or are we about to see a side (hopefully the front, but the side would do too) of these tween idols that we could never have imagined? By James Montgomery The Black Keys Photo: MTV News By now, you’ve probably seen the Black Keys ‘ new video for “Gold on the Ceiling,” which premiered Monday on MTV and is a marked departure from the band’s previous efforts, which were heavy on stuff like dancing security guards and Todd Bridges cameos . Mostly because it’s a live clip, of course. Still, that doesn’t mean the ‘Keys didn’t want their latest video to follow in the WTF-worthy tradition of their previous. In fact, they actually shot a second video for the song, one directed by oddball auteur Harmony Korine. And, as they told MTV News immediately following the “Gold on the Ceiling” premiere, that never-before-seen clip is most certainly a Harmony Korine production. “We did a video with Harmony, but it’s not really for ‘Gold on the Ceiling,'” frontman Dan Auerbach said. “Well, it is, sort of,” drummer Patrick Carney added. “It’s for whatever music we want to put to it. ‘We’re going to take a break from music,’ Gomez, who is working on several movies, announces. By Jocelyn Vena Selena Gomez on “Wizards of Waverly Place” Photo: Disney Selena Gomez will wave her magic wand one final time on January 6 when the series finale of “Wizards of Waverly Place” airs. And as she looks forward to what’s next in 2012 , she says one thing she won’t be doing is releasing new music. “We’re going to take a break from music,” Gomez told E! News . “My band and I are going to chill on that for a second. I’ll be doing two films in the beginning of [2012], which I’m excited about. They are both different and things I’ve never played before and will be fun for me.” As she closes the door on “Wizards” for good, and on her music for now, the teen superstar says that saying goodbye to her Disney show is bittersweet. “[My fans are] definitely not [ready for it to end], according to my Twitter feed and everything else,” she said. “Of course, we could stay on, but we want to move on and stuff. But the show will live on forever and we’re all grateful for that. I spent more time with them than my own family. It was amazing.” But fans of the star should prepare for what’s next. Gomez will shoot the darker “Spring Breakers” in early 2012 and has been rumored to be attached to a film called “Hot Mess.” For “Spring Breakers,” Gomez will work with director Harmony Korine (the man behind the super-dark ’90s classic “Kids”). The movie revolves around a group of college girls who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break. After they land in jail, they become entangled with the drug and arms dealer who bailed them out. James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens and Emma Roberts are also attached to the project. “It’s a different character than I have ever played before,” Gomez told MTV News about the project. “It’s a different kind of vibe, I think, than people are used to seeing me in. The network announced on Thursday that Cinema Verite — the awesome-looking ’70s period piece about the dawn of reality television with James Gandolfini, Diane Lane and Tim Robbins in leading roles — will premiere on Saturday, April 23. It’s not TV, etc.
