‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Director Jon Favreau Offers Trailer Play-By-Play

Favreau sits down with MTV News to talk about opening scene, villainous Harrison Ford and a ‘mistake’ fans found in the sneak peek. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jon Favreau Photo: MTV News “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau sure knows how to cut a trailer. Going back to his sneak peek for the first “Iron Man” — which brought down the house at that year’s San Diego Comic-Con — to the debut of the highly anticipated “Cowboys & Aliens” trailer last week, Favreau seems to be an expert at getting fans into a frenzy. Due in large part to the response from the trailer, and our own excitement for Favreau’s upcoming flick, MTV News caught up with the man himself at his editing bay in Santa Monica, California, for a play-by-play look at his titillating teaser. “This is new for me,” Favreau said of commenting on his trailer. “I’m already doing a commentary track on a [trailer]. I’m in the middle of [editing] my director’s cut.” Beginning with the first shot — in which a rough-and-tumble Daniel Craig wakes with a start to discover a mysterious metal band on his arm — Favreau addressed the challenge of melding two genres: western and sci-fi. “When you’re doing a mash-up of two genres, if you play with either of them tongue-in-cheek, the combo is not going to be what’s special,” he said. “It allowed us to play western pretty dead straight.” Also, that opening shot will likely be the film’s opening sequence too. “It’s the first shot — I’m in my director’s cut, but right now, this is essentially how the movie starts,” Favreau revealed, adding that the credit for that opening goes to executive producer Steven Spielberg. “The writers told me when Spielberg was developing the script, this was one of his big ideas, this [opening] image.” Another arresting image in the teaser is iconic actor Harrison Ford looking not-so-Harrison-Ford-like but rather grizzly and villainous. Favreau explained that he wants fans to see another side of their favorite actor, with shades of Han Solo and Indiana Jones. “When Harrison comes into the movie, how do you separate him from everything he’s done? How do you present him in a way that I, as a fan, would want to see him?” Favreau said of the challenge in having Ford portray a seemingly villainous character. “He was always this bastard with a big heart; that’s the archetype I like for him. “Everybody’s got kind of a rough edge,” Favreau added. “This is a genre film.” One more aspect to touch on, via hundreds of comments on the Internet, is a certain shot in which fans claimed that they could see a wire pulling an actor into the air; Favreau said that was no accident. “When you see more about the way the aliens work, there is a device that they abduct people with that that is a practical element of,” he explained. “It’s not a mistake — we didn’t miss the paint-out — but thanks to the people playing at home. If you could catch that, I’m very proud.” Favreau ended his first trailer play-by-play with a good-natured “thank you” to all the fans. “We’re working hard. Thanks to all of you for putting wind in our sails,” he said. “I’m glad you liked what we put out there.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Cowboys & Aliens.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . The Verge: No Ordinary Family’s Jimmy Bennett

The first time you probably saw 14-year-old actor Jimmy Bennett was when he was jumping out of a plummeting car in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek as “Young James T. Kirk.” The funny thing about Bennett though is that he’s been an active member of Hollywood since his sixth birthday, appearing opposite such heavy hitters as Harrison Ford, Steve Carell, Bruce Willis, Ryan Reynolds and Eddie Murphy. How did you spend your childhood?

‘Glee’ Guest Star Darren Criss Not Yet A Series Regular

‘It’s never really been officially confirmed to me,’ Criss says of his rumored promotion. By Amy Wilkinson Darren Criss Photo: MTV News Darren Criss has been hitting all the right notes with “Glee” fans. A week after his November 9 debut on the Fox musical series, Criss’ rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” is a top-selling song on iTunes and the first “Glee” single to become a Billboard #1 single. Not surprisingly, the Internet’s been buzzing with rumors that Criss is being bumped from a recurring role to a series regular on “Glee.” But if that’s the case, it’s news to the actor. “The weird thing about that is, I hear it from all these different blogs and interviews. … It’s never really been officially confirmed to me,” Criss told MTV News. “I think the option is there and that they want to keep Blaine around.” Promotion speculation began swirling a day after Criss’ “Glee” debut as an openly gay glee club member from rival Dalton Academy (and potential love interest for Chris Colfer’s character Kurt). Deadline broke the news that Criss was in talks to become a series regular — a status that would take effect during the show’s already green-lit third season. Creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy seemed to confirm as much in an interview with AfterElton . “Darren has become such a sensation in one week, which I love,” Murphy told the website. “I think there’s a hunger for him and a positive relationship role model. He’ll definitely continue through the year and longer. We just signed a deal with him, so I don’t know.” Criss, who originally auditioned for the role of footballer heartthrob Finn Hudson (played by Cory Monteith), said that regardless of a potential promotion, he feels blessed to be a part of the hit series. “As of now, I’m just a guest star. And I’m even happy with that,” he said. “I’d be happy to be a regular, and I’d be happy to stick around as long as they let me.” Do you want to see Darren Criss promoted to a series regular? ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Trailer: The Five Coolest Moments

Daniel Craig’s cuff, Harrison Ford’s nastiness and more caught our attention. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Craig in “Cowboys & Aliens” Photo: Universal Pictures Jon Favreau gives good trailer. Look no further than the first “Iron Man” footage , which in the span of two minutes managed to transform a C-list Marvel Comics superhero into the star of one of the most anticipated movies of 2008. The director once again finds himself with a lesser-known comic book property in “Cowboys & Aliens,” and he once again delivers one heck of a trailer. Here are our picks for the five coolest moments: Daniel Craig’s Cuff Craig’s Jake Lonergan wakes up in the late-19th-century Wild West looking seriously confused and sporting an anachronistic metallic cuff on his wrist. How’d he get it? What is its function? We soon learn that it’s some sort of high-tech weapon that can take out some nasty alien invaders. Humans vs. Aliens Make no mistake: Craig’s cuff isn’t some cheese-tastic weapon out of Will Smith’s “Wild Wild West.” The tone of “Cowboys & Aliens” is dark, humanity-in-peril stuff. The trailer delivers an awesome WTF moment when the cuff comes to life and unleashes some sort of pulse that takes out an alien craft. Kudos to Favreau for giving us a quick glimpse of that alien ship — small, winged, glowing with lights — and the sort of explosion-heavy battle that will be the lifeblood of this movie. Humans vs. Humans At least to begin, though, “Cowboys & Aliens” isn’t just about frontiersmen fighting extraterrestrials. The trailer’s first moments show us Craig in far more brutal form than in his James Bond flicks. He’s got no problem attacking people, blowing them away with a shotgun, and then stealing one of their hats, just ’cause he’ll look cool in it. Coldblooded! Note to aliens: You might not want to mess with this dude. Harrison Ford Goes Bad Even if this trailer doesn’t erase the memory of “Morning Glory,” it certainly gives us a taste of a Harrison Ford we haven’t seen in far too long. Here, he’s grizzled and nasty, and we dig it. “I want that man,” he spits. “You give him to me now, or I’m gonna take him.” Olivia Wilde Remembers Perhaps the most compelling bit of plot exposition in the film — aside from, of course, the arrival of those alien crafts — is a moment when Olivia Wilde saunters into a saloon to chat with Craig. “Do I know you?” he asks. “You don’t remember anything?” she responds. No, he does not. Apparently, he’s a wanted man with a $1,000 bounty on his head for being a “scourge
