Daniel Radcliffe Talks ‘Harry Potter,’ Gay Rights In Out

Actor says he’s been ‘running around chasing girls’ but speaks out against homophobia. By Eric Ditzian Daniel Radcliffe on the cover of Out Photo: Here Media Inc. Earlier this year, MTV News witnessed firsthand Daniel Radcliffe’s commitment to gay rights, when we hung out while the “Harry Potter” star taped a public service announcement for the Trevor Project, an LGBT support group. That dedication to working for the issue was not a one-time thing, as Radcliffe makes clear in a cover story in the new issue Out magazine. The 21-year-old was interviewed by transgendered musician Our Lady J. — an artist whose friendship with the actor raised eyebrows in the tabloids last year — and their talk ranged from gay rights to Broadway to movies to Radcliffe’s dating life. “I was in a relationship with somebody for just about three years, and we broke up just shortly before we hit that mark,” he said. “But [the breakup] was very amicable. At the moment, I’m just being single and running around chasing girls. I’m not getting too many responses, but, yes, I’m having a go.” When it comes to other people’s love lives, Radcliffe is hoping the rest of the world soon adopts a more inclusive philosophy. He realizes, though, that acceptance of differing sexualities is going to take time. “I think that with every generation, people become more open to those ideas and more aware and more educated,” he said. “But it’s a really, really slow process. If you take any family with parents who are bringing their kids up in a narrow-minded way that includes homophobia, it will take a very profound moment of realization to change those deep-seated views.” Out conducted the interview shortly after the final “Harry Potter” film wrapped production, and Radcliffe confessed that he kept a few souvenirs from the set. “I’ve got two pairs [of glasses] from the seventh film and the pair I wore in the very, very first movie — which are really tiny on my head now!” he said. As he leaves Hogwarts behind, the actor is gearing up to head to New York, where he’ll perform on Broadway in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” “I love the city as a whole, absolutely, but I love Broadway,” he said. “[T]he community is amazing, and if you get involved with all those events, and you show how much you love and appreciate being there, you really get nothing but generosity and kindness back.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Harry Potter’ Has Employed ‘All My Family,’ Emma Thompson Jokes

Thompson’s sister, Sophie, is also in ‘Deathly Hallows,’ which was ‘incredible’ to shoot, Emma tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Emma Thompson Photo: MTV News Emma Thompson has been so busy with her “Nanny McPhee” films (she wrote and starred in both) that her visit to the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” set was very brief. When MTV News caught up with the actress to talk about “Nanny McPhee Returns,” Thompson said stepping into the shoes of her kooky “Potter” character, Professor Trelawney, for the last time was short but sweet. “They were very quick,” she admitted of her two days on set. “I just had to do a bit of waving of a wand and a bit of ‘ooooo-ing’ over dead people, because of course they just had to fit absolutely everyone in.” Thompson said the guest-actor-heavy shooting schedule felt like a “conveyor belt of characters, as this extraordinary machine came to its end.” Still, Thompson said she made the most of her “Potter” time and was able to reconnect with friends/co-stars she hadn’t seen in a while. “It was incredible to see everyone and just sort of quickly say hello and goodbye.” When we mentioned that it seemed like every working actor in the U.K. has appeared in at least one “Potter” film, Thompson heartily agreed. “Absolutely everyone in equity has been in it,” Thompson said of the franchise’s lengthy cast list. “Including all my family, practically. My sister just finished. I don’t know what the name of her character is; she’s got a major role in this last one.” (Thompson’s sister Sophie plays Ministry of Magic employee/ Proper Use of Magic enforcer Mafalda Hopkirk.) Thompson revealed that she has seen her sister in action, via a photo of Sophie as Mafalda, with Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) himself. “I’ve got a photo of her with Daniel dragging her off somewhere … so I don’t know what [they’re doing]; I haven’t seen it yet.” What scene do you think is in Thompson’s photo? Is Sophie a good fit for the role of Mafalda Hopkirk? Share your thoughts in the comments! Olive Uniacke Rumored as Danielle Radcliffe Girlfriend

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe didn’t celebrate his 21st birthday alone last month. The actor was spotted out with Olive Uniacke, the stepdaughter of David Heyman, who has produced many of the Harry Potter movies. According to a source, speaking to London’s The Daily Mail : “Olive and Dan have known each other a long time… They were close a few years ago but the relationship fizzled out then. Even so, they have always remained friends. And in the last few months they have grown closer again.” Uniacke, studied at the Gordonstoun school in Scotland, the same institution that educated Prince Charles. Moreover, this 19-year old knows how to party! “Olive is renowned for holding some of the best house parties, really great bashes,” said the insider. “She can be quite wild. She loves to drink champagne, particularly Moet, and she chain-smokes Camel cigarettes. She also loves to go nightclubbing.” This is all terrible news for Ginny Weasley, of course. How can Ron’s sister’s possibly compete with all that?!?

‘Harry Potter’ Actress Bonnie Wright Dishes On Growing Up With Ginny

‘Being the person who sort of ends up with the hero of this franchise is never something I ever would have imagined,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Bonnie Wright Photo: MTV News It’s hard to believe that Bonnie Wright was only 9 years old when she first appeared onscreen in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Though looking at production stills of Wright in “Sorcerer’s Stone” through the teasers for “Deathly Hallows,” it’s easy to see the evolution of the young girl grown into the young woman she is today. When MTV News caught up with the actress at the recent opening of Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter , we asked Wright to reflect on how her character, Ginny Weasley, has evolved along with her over the course of the eight “Potter” films. “Being the person who sort of ends up with the hero of this franchise is never something I ever would have imagined,” she said of her character becoming Harry’s love interest. “It’s just been so exciting, so lovely to have something that develops further, and you can make [Ginny] my own and take things from your own life growing up and put those things into it.” Regarding the much-discussed, heavily hyped epilogue , Wright said the “full-on scene” is a fitting end to the series because the filmmakers chose to shoot it as a stand-alone ending, not just a background for the end credits. She added that one of her last scenes in the epilogue was a particularly surreal moment, because her character started and ended her “Potter” journey in the same place. “It wasn’t my last scene, but it was one of my last scenes. That’s where I started the journey of ‘Harry Potter,’ on the platform, and then to see the girl who’s playing our daughter was just psychologically, it was very weird, because she’s the same age as me. It was literally having a whole cycle of the journey.” Wright hopes audiences will appreciate that final scene as much as she did. “I hope it’s well-received. In terms of the prosthetics and creativity of it, they took months and months — I must have done 100 tests and costume fittings. A lot of energy went into making that moment perfect.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Harry Potter’ Star Tom Felton Says Farewell Scene Is All About ‘Presence And Look’

‘I had a monologue prepared, but time was short,’ actor joked about the ‘Potter’ epilogue. By Kara Warner Tom Felton Photo: MTV News While the recent trailers and TV spots for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” have proven to be sufficient teasers for Potterheads — showcasing a darker, more serious film and more harrowing action sequences — fans can’t seem to get enough news about the series’ much-discussed/hyped final scene: the epilogue. When MTV News caught up with celebrated villain and MTV Movie Award winner Tom Felton , we asked him if in his big final scene, which is set 19 years in the “Potter” future, Draco Malfoy closes the series with any sweeping dialogue. “I had a monologue prepared, but time was short,” he joked. “No, it was all in the presence and the look.” So Draco Malfoy’s farewell is all in his menacing presence? “This is the idea, that’s what they told me,” he said. “Hopefully that reads. It was a lot of fun.” Adding to the epilogue fun is the fact that Felton’s real-life girlfriend, “Potter” stunt assistant Jade Olivia, plays his wife in that final shot. “She was at first reluctant, but I pulled her arm and twisted it,” Felton told MTV at last month’s Movie Awards of convincing Olivia to step in and play Astoria Malfoy. “She was filming with me for three days at King’s Cross [railway station in the U.K.]. We were very excited.” “It gave me a chance to see what she’s going to look like in 19 years,” Felton added. “And if that’s what she looks like, I’m doing pretty well for myself,” he laughed. “But I look terrible ,” he said of his own aged visage. “The years have not been kind to me in the slightest. But what can I do? I’ve gotta just roll with it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Harry Potter’ Actress’ Father And Brother Threaten To Kill Her

The father and brother of Afshan Azad are accused of threatening to kill the star because of her relationship with a Hindu man. By Mawuse Ziegbe Afshan Azad Photo: Getty Images The father and brother of actress Afshan Azad, who plays Padma Patil in the “Harry Potter” franchise, have been accused of threatening to kill the star. Her brother has also been accused of assaulting her at her home in Manchester, England. According to CNN , a spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said the actress was allegedly attacked on May 21 because her family disapproved of her relationship with a Hindu man. Azad’s family is Muslim. Azad’s father, Abdul Azad, and brother, Ashraf Azad, recently appeared in Manchester Magistrate’s Court via video link, according to the Manchester Evening News . The actress was also present at the hearing and the two men have been released on bail. Bail conditions stipulate that neither father nor brother can travel to London and must adhere to a curfew. The paper also reports that the pair will appear again in court later this month and that “it is understood” that Azad’s father and brother plan to plead not guilty. Azad was a student with no acting experience when she was cast as Padma Patil, a classmate of Harry’s. Azad reportedly tagged along to an audition with some friends “for a bit fun.” She has since appeared in four movies, and the Manchester Evening News reports that she is expected to appear in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which is set to hit theaters next year. John Wolfson, a lawyer for Azad’s brother Ashraf, said, “I hope for the whole family’s sake this matter can be resolved quickly and happily.”
