She lost her leg because of Toxic Shock Syndrome…something you may remember learning about in Health Class, or from some hipplie chick in the late 90s showing off her “Keepa Menstrual Cup”….but that you probably haven’t heard of since, since you don’t get your period… The idea is that shoving a tampon in you, seeing as it is a foreign object, normally not sterile, and made with chemicals, fucks up your system, directly to your blood source, causing a bacterial infection that can lead to death or I guess amputation… The story of her realizing she was sick, to being hospitalized is terrifying, but she’s still here even after heart attack to tell the story and remind girls that this exists and is an issue, She’s also in the process of suing Kotex / Kimberly Clark and getting things more regulated in goverment…because this should not happen to anyone…. There’s a lot for Portia de Rossi to be happy about. Just this past December, Portia celebrated 10 years with Ellen DeGeneres . But life hasn’t always been so grand for the Scandal star. In the second season of the web series It Gets Better, de Rossi opens up about her battle with bulimia . It Gets Better is a series developed for teenagers struggling with their sexual identity. It often features stars candidly discussing their past demons. Portia discussed her eating disorder and how it was tied the complicated emotions she felt about her sexuality. “I felt tremendous responsibility when I was 12 years old, and I was put up on a catwalk,” de Rossi reveals. She continues, “My modeling agents had told me to go on a diet. So I didn’t eat for 10 days before the.” It wasn’t just the agents prodding at her self-esteem either. Portia adds that even fellow models taunted her about her bushy eyebrows. The actress goes into detail about the difficult battle between her body and her damaging internal dialogue: “When I got in the car after that event and just opened up a bag of my favorite candy and just put my whole head in it and I think, ‘S**t, what have I done? I’ve just undid two weeks worth of dieting.’ So then I vomit.” Because of her eating disorder, de Rossi’s weight dropped to a dangerous 82 pounds. She states, “I didn’t want to think about being gay,” and the struggle with her sexual identity was a contributing factor toward her eating disorder. But as the title of the web series suggests, it does get better. Portia is in a better place, and she hopes her story can help young people who are confronting similar issues. “No matter what it is, you just have to go with whatever makes you smile.” It really does get better.

After five decades in the health and fitness industry, Nidetch passed away today at her home in Ft. Lauderdale. She was 91 years old. Today, the company that Nidetch founded from her kitchen in Brooklyn is a globally-recognized brand with A-list celebrity spokespersons. Stars like Jessica Simpson have slimmed down with Weight Watchers , and its products are sold in more than 30 countries. Nidetch was overweight throughout her childhood and began coming up with strategies to drop the extra pounds while in her late-30s. She was 5’7″ and weighed 214 pounds at the time and she came up with some simple guidelines (don’t skip meals, eat fish five times a week) that she found worked not only for her, but for the friends that she advised in their own efforts to “reduce.” In 1978, the Heinz corporation purchased Weight Watchers from Nidetch for $71 million.
