Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi Renew Vows to Save Marriage

Just seven months since Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi celebrated 10 years  together, reports are coming in (again) that the couple is having trouble. But rather than calling it quits, Ellen and Portia are renewing their vows to save their marriage. According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, Ellen and Portia have been teetering on the edge of divorce for more than a year now.  They’ve even worked out separate living arrangements. The couple’s fighting has increased exponentially since Portia accused Ellen of sleeping with her close friend Tatum O’Neal. Ellen and Tatum are BFF, and, for a while, Portia didn’t think much of it.  But, in an interview, Tatum claimed she has started dating only women. Hearing that Tatum is dating women, Portia got uber jealous of Ellen and Tatum’s friendship. The practice of renewing wedding vows is common among troubled couples.  It looks like Ellen and Portia are buying into the vow renewal as a way of saving their relationship. Plus, with the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage, it’s perfect timing to say “I do, again.” Since the ruling, Ellen has gotten a ton of emails and tweets thanking her and Portia for paving the way for gay marriage to be recognized nationwide,” a source told Radar Online. “She knows that getting re-married in Louisiana, which has always been a very anti-gay state, would be rubbing it in to some people, but she does not care.” Some are surprised that Ellen and Portia haven’t divorced already.  And renewing their vows is just patching the wound. Ellen and Portia have been a pillar in the journey toward marriage equality, as exemplified by Ellen’s statement to a bigoted pastor .  We hope things work out for them.

Portia de Rossi Opens Up About Struggle with Bulimia

There’s a lot for Portia de Rossi to be happy about.  Just this past December, Portia celebrated 10 years with Ellen DeGeneres .   But life hasn’t always been so grand for the Scandal star. In the second season of the web series It Gets Better, de Rossi opens up about her battle with bulimia . It Gets Better is a series developed for teenagers struggling with their sexual identity.  It often features stars candidly discussing their past demons. Portia discussed her eating disorder and how it was tied the complicated emotions she felt about her sexuality. “I felt tremendous responsibility when I was 12 years old, and I was put up on a catwalk,” de Rossi reveals. She continues,  “My modeling agents had told me to go on a diet. So I didn’t eat for 10 days before the.” It wasn’t just the agents prodding at her self-esteem either.  Portia adds that even fellow models taunted her about her bushy eyebrows. The actress goes into detail about the difficult battle between her body and her damaging internal dialogue: “When I got in the car after that event and just opened up a bag of my favorite candy and just put my whole head in it and I think, ‘S**t, what have I done? I’ve just undid two weeks worth of dieting.’ So then I vomit.” Because of her eating disorder, de Rossi’s weight dropped to a dangerous 82 pounds. She states, “I didn’t want to think about being gay,” and the struggle with her sexual identity was a contributing factor toward her eating disorder. But as the title of the web series suggests, it does get better. Portia is in a better place, and she hopes her story can help young people who are confronting similar issues. “No matter what it is, you just have to go with whatever makes you smile.” It really does get better.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi Celebrate 10 Year-Anniversary, Pose for Makeup-Free Selfie

And they said it wouldn’t last! Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi took to Instagram this week to celebrate 10 amazing years as a couple, posing for a make-up selfie and looking more in love now than ever before. They didn’t include a caption with the following beach-based snapshot because, really, no words are needed to express the joy depicted here: DeGeneres and de Rossi dated for four years before saying they do on Augst  15, 2008. They continue to be one of Hollywood’s most fun and enjoyable couples, as evidenced by their mocking of the Kim Kardashian nude spread in Paper Magazine with their latest Christmas card. Seriously, how amazing is THIS ? Sadly, of course, the tabloids have been targeting Ellen and Portia for some time now, publishing erroneous divorce stories and even alleging over the summer that DeGeneres cheated on her wife . This prompted a response from Ellen. “The truth is, and this is corny, I fall more in love with Portia all the time,” she told People earlier this year, adding: “I really do. She surprises me all the time…It’s what anyone experiences when you find that person that gets you, wants to take care of you, wants the best for you. We’re really lucky because we know how rare it is.” 56 Stars Who Are Makeup Free and Fabulous 1. Lorde Without Makeup Lorde isn’t just wearing no makeup in this Twit pic. She’s wearing pimple cream!

On The Rocks? Ellen And Portia Allegedly Cancel Animal-Saving Charity Appearance After “Epic” Fight In The Car

Carpet-munchin’ martrimony-dom ain’t easy … Ellen Degeneres And Wife Portia Rumored To Have Had Major Fight Prior To Charity Event Via NYPost Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi didn’t show up at a charity fund-raiser for rescued animals after having a huge fight in the car on the way to Sunday’s event, sources tell Page Six. The power couple was on the way to the Saving SPOT! fund-raiser at Tiato in Santa Monica when they got into an argument and turned around without attending the event, even though they were listed and pictured on the invitation as hosts. Ellen and Portia on Monday insisted to Page Six they had informed the charity they would be unable to make it and their picture should not have been on the invitation. A source told us: “Ellen and Portia were supposed to be at the event at 5 p.m., but at 6:30 p.m., the media was still waiting for their arrival. Reporters were told they were on their way, until the head of the charity informed everyone at the end of the event that they weren’t going to make it due to ‘logistics.’” The source added, “Ellen and Portia were delayed and were in the car on the way, when they had an epic fight. They ended up turning around and not going to the fund-raiser.” Saving SPOT! is a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing dogs and providing them with caring owners. Ellen and Portia attended last year’s benefit in Beverly Hills and had been happy to be listed as hosts for this year’s event, we’re told. Ellen — a generous animal-welfare supporter — and Portia said in a statement to Page Six: “We were happy to lend our names as honorary chairs and the organization was always aware that we would be unable to attend. This is the first time we have seen our images attached to the invite. It was not approved and it is misleading.” DeGeneres’ attorney Marty Singer said, “The story is a complete lie. My client told the organizer they never agreed nor planned to attend the event. There was no fight that caused them not to attend.” The charity didn’t respond to requests for comment. Ellen recently slammed divorce rumors and reports of arguments on the season premiere of her talk show. “I had a great summer,” she said in September. “I went on a trip with Portia, my beautiful wife — who I am happily married to, but thank you for your heartfelt concern, tabloids.” Ellen better get right before Portia gets ready to sign them papers. Race Matters: Study Shows Having A “White-Sounding Name” Is Worth About 8 Years Of Work Experience

What’s in a name ? White-Sounding Name Is Worth About 8 Years Of Work Experience Via The Atlantic reports: Companies with names that are simple and easy to pronounce see significantly higher investments than more complexly named stocks, especially just after their initial public offerings when information on the stock’s fundamentals are most scarce. People with easier to pronounce names are also judged more positively and tend to be hired and promoted more often than their more obscurely named peers. There are more variables at play than just pronunciation, though. In competitive fields that have classically been dominated by men, such as law and engineering, women with sexually ambiguous names tend to be more successful. This effect is known as the Portia Hypothesis (named for the heroine of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice who disguises herself as a lawyer’s apprentice and takes on the name Balthazar to save the titular merchant, Antonio). A study found that female lawyers with more masculine names—such as Barney, Dale, Leslie, Jan, and Rudell—tend to have better chances of winning judgeships than their more effeminately named female peers. All else being equal, changing a candidate’s name from Sue to Cameron tripled a candidate’s likelihood of becoming a judge; a change from Sue to Bruce quintupled it. Names work hard: They can affect who gets into elite schools, what jobs we apply for, and who gets hired. Our names can even influence what cities we live in, who we befriend, and what products we buy since, we’re attracted to things and places that share similarities to our names. A name is, after all, perhaps the most important identifier of a person. Most decisions are made in about three to four seconds of meeting someone, and this “thin-slicing” is surprisingly accurate. Something as packed full of clues as a name tends to lead to all sorts of assumptions and expectations about a person, often before any face-to-face interaction has taken place. A first name can imply race, age, socioeconomic status, and sometimes religion, so it’s an easy—or lazy—way to judge someone’s background, character, and intelligence. A 2004 study showed that all else being equal, employers selected candidates with names like Emily Walsh and Greg Baker for callbacks almost 50 percent more often than candidates with names like Lakisha Washington and Jamal Jones. Work experience was controlled and the candidates never met face-to-face with the employer so all that was being tested was the effect of the candidate’s name. The researchers concluded that there was a great advantage to having a white-sounding name, so much so that having a white-sounding name is worth about eight years of work experience. “Jamal” would have to work in an industry for eight years longer than “Greg” for them to have equal chances of being hired, even if Jamal came from a privileged background and Greg from an underprivileged one. (Perhaps that’s why mega-celebrities can get away with giving their children peculiar names. A résumé with the name North West probably wouldn’t do as well as James Williamson—unless Papa Kanye called up the boss.) Do you think having a white sounding name is more beneficial than having a “ethnic” name in the professional world?

REVIEW: Tina Fey’s Class Clown Act Can’t Save C-Level ‘Admission’

Though smarter than your average dramedy, Paul Weitz’s  forced Admission faces some major identity issues. Tina Fey  plays a discombobulated Princeton admissions officer who must confront the limits of her morals when she learns that a potential Princeton applicant might be the son she gave up for adoption. What appears on paper to be an ideal three-dimensional, morally complex role for the quick-witted comedienne backfires in practice, relying on Fey to be funny in a movie that works better serious. Despite offering consolation to the world’s many Ivy League rejects that the gatekeepers sometimes make mistakes, low entrance levels await. Clearly, what Weitz wanted was to recapture some of Fey’s Baby Mama mojo (it earned a surprise $60 million, after all), relying on the actress to bring the same vulnerable uncertainty to another harried working-woman role. But that film was conceived as a traditional laffer, whereas Admission is based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s more nuanced novel, in which Fey’s seemingly straightlaced character is thrown for a loop by a highly unusual applicant. While the book treats this wrinkle as its big surprise, the more plot-driven adaptation serves it up as a central concept, positioning Fey’s Portia Nathan as an increasingly screwball character struggling (and mostly failing) to maintain her professional ethics amid a messy personal crisis. Through a series of clunky, on-the-nose character-development scenes, the pic establishes Portia’s life — or, more accurately, her current state of denial: She’s fallen into a predictable routine with her tweedy lit-professor b.f. ( Michael Sheen ), her fastidiously clean workspace and her general intolerance of kids. Instead of indulging auds’ natural curiosity with a look inside the closed-door world of college admissions, the pic leaves Fey and her co-stars to play dress-up in a wood-paneled office where Wallace Shawn amiably poses as the dean of admissions and everybody carries around orange folders like so many hyper-efficient Oompa Loompas. The impression essentially favors Princeton as it reveals the fair, yet relatively inflexible process by which Portia and rival Corinne (Gloria Reuben) evaluate high school seniors’ essays and extracurriculars. Each folder conjures a fresh, optimistic-looking teen at the edge of the reader’s desk, the majority of whom then plummet through an invisible trapdoor after failing to meet the high threshold. With Portia and Corinne competing for a promotion, Portia throws herself into her usual visits to prospective students, giving the same canned speech at every stop until she arrives at New Quest, a newly accredited — and highly experimental — school overseen by fellow Dartmouth grad John Pressman ( Paul Rudd ). Implausibly, John remembers the day and hour Portia gave her baby up for adoption and has somehow managed to match it to his star pupil, a freakishly smart but terribly awkward teen named Jeremiah (Nat Wolff). But Pressman’s timing in revealing the information couldn’t be worse: Not only is this a sensitive time at work, but Portia’s b.f. is searching for an opportunity to break things off, and her long-frazzled relationship with her mother ( Lily Tomlin ) is coming to a boil, all of which drives Portia to behave as only movie characters do, sobbing, smooching and puking at the most inopportune moments. Other New Quest students question the value of what they see as the sexist, racist, homophobic institution Portia represents, but Jeremiah wants to attend Princeton. Problem is, he lacks the grades to get in. Watching the final admissions process, one wants to believe the officers become this invested in everyone they consider. And yet Portia goes to extremes to boost Jeremiah’s chances, manipulating co-workers and even breaking in to alter his file. The comedy feels forced as Fey works overtime to insert unnecessary zingers at the tail of every scene. If the cast weren’t so endearing, her actions could easily sour an audience on the whole experience, and Admission digs itself a hole only an ensemble this appealing can escape. Tomlin in particular enlivens her limited screentime as an irrepressible free spirit — a woman who truly understands the meaning of acceptance. Follow Movieline on  Twitter .
