In Funny White Folks News: NBC Announces Jimmy Fallon To Take Over ‘The Tonight Show’ From Jay Leno In Spring 2014

Congrats Jimmy ! Jimmy Fallon To Replace Jay Leno Via HuffPo reports: NBC has officially announced that Jimmy Fallon will take over “The Tonight Show” in 2014, and Jay Leno will end his run as the host of the show. Bill Carter of The New York Times reports that Fallon, currently the host of “Late Night,” will begin hosting the show in February. Fallon has hosted “Late Night” since 2009, and along with his house band The Roots, has developed a variety show that blends music, celebrity impressions and an enthusiastic approach to the talk show format to make it one of the most unique late night programs on the air. Lorne Michaels executive produces Fallon’s current show, and will produce “The Tonight Show” in addition to his “Saturday Night Live” duties. The news follows months of rumors that Fallon would take over the show when Leno’s contract expires next year. The show will be taped at 30 Rock in New York, the first time the show has been taped there since Johnny Carson left in 1972. In a statement, departing host Leno said, “Congratulations Jimmy. I hope you’re as lucky as me and hold on to the job until you’re the old guy. If you need me, I’ll be at the garage.” NBC has attempted a “Tonight Show” host transition once before. In 2004, they announced that Conan O’Brien, then the host of “Late Night,” would take over “The Tonight Show” in 2009. By the time the transition occurred, Leno was still on top of the ratings, and NBC gave Leno a primetime show to prevent him from going to another network. However, faltering ratings of both programs led to NBC installing Leno as the host once again. The network did not mention O’Brien’s stint as the “Tonight Show” host in its press release about the Fallon transition, instead claiming that Leno has hosted “The Tonight Show” since 1992. Leno told the Times that he felt better about this transition. “The main difference between this and the other time is I’m part of the process. The last time the decision was made without me. I came into work one day and — you’re out.” This transition was largely initiated by the threat posed by “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, which moved from midnight to 11:35 earlier this year. Although Leno’s program continues to be number one in both overall ratings and the 18-49 demographic, Kimmel’s show has proven to be competitive. And in the Fall of 2014, Jay Leno will take back the Tonight Show. Jordan Strauss/Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP

Jimmy Fallon Not Hosting Oscars: ‘It’s An Honor To Be Asked’

Rumors had swirled that late night host Jimmy Fallon could host the 2012 Oscars telecast, with none other than SNL / Late Night producer Lorne Michaels potentially coming aboard to produce the annual extravaganza. Speaking with Matt Lauer Wednesday on the Today show, Fallon seemed to corroborate the speculation but revealed that he will not be hosting. “No, I’m not going to do the Oscars,” Fallon said. “It’s an honor to be asked by the Academy, but it’s not my year.” So wait — Fallon was asked to host, and he turned them down? Semantics, etc. Between the departure of ex-Academy president Tom Sherak and the new tenure of his successor Hawk Koch, the reported objections ABC had to hiring NBC figure Fallon, and the fact that Fallon’s late night rival Jimmy Kimmel is already hosting the Emmys — which Fallon did in 2010 to positive reviews — who knows why the Academy and Fallon couldn’t make it happen this year. If the gig’s still open, who, if not Fallon/Michaels, could finally make the Oscars telecast great again? (Put your hand down, Ratner .) Sound off, Oscarwatchers! [ THR ]

Where’s Billy Crystal on the New Oscars Poster?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the poster for the 84th Academy Awards, and it’s… nice? I mean, Oscar looks sexy as ever, and all those foggy images of awards-night glories past recall both the champagne-fueled afterparties and the preponderance of white folks who take this hardware home every year. But isn’t something missing? Like, the host? After all that hullabaloo about Brett Ratner and Eddie Murphy that the Academy worked to deflect, and after all the lengths that the Board of Governors went to just to replace Murphy with an ultrasafe, ultrastable emcee, and after years of advertising hosts from Chris Rock to Jon Stewart to Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin to Anne Hathaway and Anne Franco, where is Billy Crystal? If I’m a casual viewer, I’m far likelier to take positive notice of the host than of the centrally positioned reminder that Driving Miss Daisy actually won Best Picture once upon a sad, sad time. Also: Can’t we get some more color in here? Sidney Poitier? Denzel Washington? Mo’Nique? If it has to be Best Picture alums, maybe Poitier and Rod Steiger from In the Heat of the Night ? Even Anthony Mackie and Jeremy Renner from The Hurt Locker . I’m not sure what this says about the young demographic that the aging Academy claims to covet; I doubt they’re watching Giant and/or The Sound of Music . Or maybe they are! Are you “young” and obsessive-compulsively watching Gone With the Wind on a DVD loop in honor of white, uptight, vaunted Academy legacies? Tell us in the comments! [via Awards Daily ]
