‘Catching Fire’ In IMAX: Time To Embrace The Big, Big Screen?

In this week’s Hobnobbing, we wonder if the new format is really worth the five extra bucks. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: We interrupt your regularly scheduled Finnick speculation to bring you this special announcement: “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will light up IMAX theaters come November 2013! (OK, the news broke Wednesday, but I don’t write my column until Thursday.) Anyway, this is big (as in 70 feet tall) news … if you like that sort of thing. While “The Hunger Games” was re-mastered for IMAX screens, director Francis Lawrence intends to shoot entire “Catching Fire” sequences in the larger-than-life format. As my colleague Kevin P. Sullivan noted , this will be only the sixth major studio film to be partially shot in IMAX — news to which my reaction was roughly, “Okie doke…” See, I’ve never really understood the appeal of IMAX. Isn’t it just for people with poor eyesight who need to see things really large? And why should I pay roughly five extra bucks for the privilege? I have good vision! To wit, I’ve never purposely sought out an IMAX screening. One time on vacation in Seattle my friend insisted we see “The Lion King” (nearly a decade after its initial release) in IMAX, and since I didn’t want to be a chump, I went along. I’ve probably been to one IMAX movie since (it wasn’t “Avatar,” by the way, my hometown theater is lame), but I can’t help but wonder if I’m missing something. According to conventional wisdom and my previously mentioned colleague Kevin (who graciously humored my IMAX questions and concerns), the format is considered the height of immersive movie-going technology. (So much more worth the price than 3-D, he says.) Everything’s huge! Everything’s so detailed! Everything else in the theater just disappears! It’s like that guy in the front row wearing the bowler hat festooned with Christmas lights doesn’t exist! Fine, fine. I get it. And I’m willing to give it another try because Katniss and Peeta deserve as much. (It will also give me another ready-made column idea come next Thanksgiving!) And with speculation swirling that the IMAX-friendly filming will likely focus on the nifty new Quarter Quell arena, I’m simultaneously thrilled and sick to my stomach over the idea of being completely immersed in the bloody battle. Nonetheless, let the IMAX Games begin! “Catching Fire” hits theaters November 22, 2013. Are you excited to see “Catching Fire” in IMAX? Or is it much ado about nothing? Breaking Dawn First Images: Bella and Edward Welcome Renesmee, Lautner Insists Imprinting Not Creepy

Oh hey, remember Twilight ? That book that was a movie that spawned a gazillion-dollar franchise before The Hunger Games and Fifty Shades of Grey made you momentarily forget about sparkly vampires? Well, it’s back, and the latest EW cover serves to remind us all that Breaking Dawn – Part 2 — the franchise ender, due in November — is just on the horizon. Forthwith, your first look at Vampire Bella, Daddy Edward, and, uh, Uncle Jacob with Breaking Dawn ‘s preternaturally mature baby Renesmee. EW teases their June 22 issue with family portraits of Bella ( Kristen Stewart ), Edward ( Robert Pattinson ), Jacob ( Taylor Lautner ), and little Renesmee, a new character introduced in Breaking Dawn – Part 2 . Per Stephenie Meyer’s final Twilight novel, Renesmee is the half-human, half-vampire baby whose birth pretty much kills Bella at the end of Breaking Dawn – Part 1 , necessitating Bella’s transformation into a vampire and kicking off the final chapter of zany events in the series. Among the stranger details of Breaking Dawn – Part 2 : Renesmee is a hybrid creature baby who grows at an accelerated rate, hence why she looks more like Siri Cruise than a normal infant. (Forget Twilight – let’s get to the untold story of Matt Leblanc, amirite?) Eleven-year-old newcomer Mackenzie Foy nabbed the role of Renesmee, and from the looks of EW’s preview she gets considerable face time with not only her vampire parents (and Jacob — more on that in a bit) but with the various assembled international vampires that gather to rally around the Cullen clan as the evil Volturi vamps head to America to wipe them out. EW’s Twilight issue hits stands June 15, along with new images from the film. Take a look at the Cullen brood… And the various global vampire clans that gather in Breaking Dawn – Part 2 : Of course, Dakota Fanning returns with the Volturi… …and Vampire Bella is strong enough to arm-wrestle Emmett… …but let’s talk about Jacob and Renesmee and the love that dare not speak its name: Imprinting. Scans of the EW cover story have already leaked, revealing bits of the cast and director interviews discussing the set, casting Foy (“Even our hands look similar,” marvels Stewart), etc. But let’s jump right over to the elephant in the room, shall we? Lautner addresses his Breaking Dawn challenge — making Jacob “imprint” on his soulmate, baby Renesmee, without making it feel, you know, creepy (via Nessie-Mackenzie.com ): …talking to Stephenie Meyer and diving back into the book got him more comfortable with the notion of being in love with a child. “Everyone likes to tease me about it,” he says. “Everyone thinks it’s so funny, and I laugh along with them, but it’s important for me to keep in my mind that it’s as simple as a lifelong bond. It’s not nearly as creepy as everybody likes to joke.” That “everybody” includes Pattinson, needless to say. “Oh, I can’t wait till he has to do live TV,” Pattinson says of Lautner with a gleeful cackle. “Did you ask him if his taste in women has changed? The first scene I saw them together, I literally could not stop laughing. I wouldn’t have been able to do it.” Well, good luck to Lautner. I don’t care if Stewart had to wear uncomfortable contact lenses, he’s officially got the hardest job of anyone on Twilight . Look for more in EW’s June 22 issue. [ EW ]

Catching Fire Casting: Philip Seymour Hoffman in for Hunger Games Sequel?

After inheriting the reins of the Hunger Games franchise from director Gary Ross, Francis Lawrence is making casting moves as the YA series sequel, Catching Fire , comes into view. According to THR, the first new cast addition may be Philip Seymour Hoffman , who has reportedly been offered a key role that will figure into the next two installments in the franchise: New Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee. If you recall, Wes Bentley’s Seneca Crane didn’t fare so well at the end of The Hunger Games, having failed to do his job in allowing Katniss Everdeen to become a symbol for rebellion. His position now vacated, Crane is replaced in Catching Fire by Heavensbee, who has a few surprises of his own to reveal. If you’ve read the books or know what happens in Catching Fire and beyond, the casting of this character in particular is all more intriguing, given what transpires in the plot-heavy next installments. Without spoiling it, I’ll just say this: Seeing someone of Hoffman’s caliber in the role makes Catching Fire (and the trilogy-ender Mockingjay) very promising, indeed. No confirmation yet as to whether or not Hoffman is a go for Plutarch Heavensbee; filming, meanwhile, is set to begin in September. [ THR ]

Who Might Philip Seymour Hoffman Play in Catching Fire?

Who will portray Finnick Odair in Catching Fire ? Let’s table that debate for a moment and focus on another key role from The Hunger Games sequel. Multiple sources confirm that Oscar winner and 2012 Tony Award nominee Philip Seymour Hoffman has been offered the character of Plutarch Heavensbee, the Gamemaker at the Capitol who takes over for Seneca Crane and who is far savvier than his predecessor. He plays a pivotal part in the world of Katniss, Peeta and company over the course of the next book/film chapter. Hoffman, one of the most respected actors alive, would be a major coup for new director Francis Lawrence. He just finished a run as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman on Broadway . No word yet from the star or the studio, but come on. This has to happen, right? [Photo: WENN.com]

‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Fever Hits ‘Rock Of Ages’ Ladies

‘I just think more men should be reading it,’ Julianne Hough tells MTV News. By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Malin Akerman Photo: MTV News It seems like the “Rock of Ages” stars are living up to the phrase “sex, drugs and rock and roll.” Well, not the drugs part. But the stars are certainly onboard for a little S&M with “Fifty Shades of Grey.” When MTV News caught up with Julianne Hough, Malin Akerman, Diego Boneta and director Adam Shankman for Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week, where they brought us an exclusive look at their new film, we put them through a rapid-fire round of questioning. When asked to choose between “Fifty Shades” and “Hunger Games,” Hough and Akerman revealed their pick in unison saying, “Fifty Shades of Grey!” before promptly giving each other a high-five. “I just think more men should be reading it,” Hough said. “I’m just saying.” Akerman agreed, letting us know why: “To know what to do.” The erotic novel follows the sadomasochistic relationship between billionaire tycoon Christian Grey and recent college graduate Anastasia Steele. It begins as a purely physical attraction, and the book has more than its fair share of steamy scenes. But as the couple become engrossed in each other, their sexual affair blossoms into a romance. Boneta and Shankman, on the other hand, showed a gender divide when they both said their preference is Suzanne Collins’ dystopian thriller. Although, the director did reveal that he’s one to judge a book by its cover. “On the third book [‘Fifty Shades Freed,’ I] saw on the cover some handcuffs,” he said, “so I might go with the third in the series.” Our other big question of the night was what movie or album the stars want a sneak peek of that doesn’t currently exist. “Oh, ‘Dark Knight [Rises],’ ” Shankman immediately said throwing his hands up. “I mean, I saw 10 minutes of it. I’m just saying.” Boneta approved the director’s movie pick and named his most anticipated album as U2’s next endeavor. “I’ll go with ‘Dark Knight’ too,” Akerman said of her movie choice. “This is great.” “Yeah, we’re all ‘Dark Knight’!” Julianne agreed. There you have it, the hottest picks of the summer: “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Do you think Christian Bale could play Christian Grey? Have Angelina Jolie, Miley Cyrus Caught ‘Fifty Shades’ Fever?

Jolie rumored to be in talks to direct the film, while Cyrus is currently reading the E.L. James novels. By Jocelyn Vena Angelina Jolie Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It seems that everyone has the fever these days. That fever is for the steamy erotic novel “Fifty Shades of Grey.” And there are two more Hollywood A-listers who are potentially getting all hot and bothered. Well, one of them is, at least. Angelina Jolie had been rumored to be in the running to direct the big-screen adaptation of the E.L. James novel. Deadline reported that the film’s studio had had a “conversation or two” with the actress about possibly helming the sexy film franchise. The trilogy follows the S&M relationship between shy college coed Ana Steele and her domineering billionaire beau, Christian Grey. However, Jolie’s rep tells The Hollywood Reporter that there haven’t been any talks with the studio, Universal Pictures’ Focus Features, about her coming on board to direct. Well, with the studio on the lookout for not only a director but also a leading lady, they might want to call up the newly engaged Miley Cyrus . One day after announcing her impending nuptials to “Hunger Games” star Liam Hemsworth, she tweeted , “Reading 50 shades of grey next to the oldest dude ever. #awkward.” Even if Cyrus doesn’t get the part of Ana, she is working on her own sexy project. The singer is currently hard at work on her next studio album , which sources say will be “very adult and sexy.” The insiders add that Miley’s music is reflecting her personal life, as she plans her wedding and approaches her big twentieth birthday later this year. The insider continues, “We are watching a young girl turn into a young woman.” But back to “Fifty Shades.” Since the phenomenon took off, everyone from Julianne Hough to Nina Dobrev to Ian Somerhalder has opened up to MTV News about the novels, whether because they are fans or because they have an interest in tackling one of the roles. Miley Cyrus Planning ‘Sexy’ Album Before Marrying Liam Hemsworth

Sources say Miley is working on music that is ‘very adult and sexy and believable.’ By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus Photo: Getty Images Miley Cyrus is hard at work on her fourth studio album. And while she attempted to branch out into a more adult sound on 2010’s Can’t Be Tamed, sources say this next studio release will be “very adult and sexy” and, more importantly, “believable.” Sources tell E! News that the former Disney princess, who just announced her engagement to Liam Hemsworth , is “having fun making music for the first time in her career.” She’s reportedly sexing things up with producers Pharrell Williams and Hit-Boy, recording music in Miami and Los Angeles. The insider continues, “We are watching a young girl turn into a young woman.” Cyrus is also taking other steps towards a more mature sound. She’s working with music manager Bruce Flohr of Red Light Management and is no longer with the manager she had when she was closely associated with Disney. The source adds that people in her camp are referring to the musical move as “Miley 2.0.” The fact that Miley is focused on her career might make her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, happy. Sources tell Radar Online that he’s hoping his 19-year-old daughter won’t rush to the altar. The source adds that neither Billy Ray nor Miley’s mother, Tish, was surprised by the engagement. In fact, Hemsworth asked for their permission before he popped the question. “They knew it was coming,” the Radar source said. “Liam lived with Miley and her parents when they began dating in 2009. Billy Ray and Tish love him like a son. However, Billy Ray is concerned about how young they are and he hopes that they aren’t in a rush to get married. Billy Ray hopes the engagement will be very long, but he isn’t opposed to the marriage at all. Billy Ray got divorced from his first wife Cindy, though, and he just doesn’t want Miley to go through a similar heartbreak.” The same day the news broke, Billy Ray tweeted his congratulations to his little girl, writing, “All I ever hoped for as a Daddy was to see my kids reach their dreams. To find happiness … peace of mind … and someday know … true love.” Hemsworth asked Cyrus to marry him on May 31, after three years of dating. They met on the set of “The Last Song.” So what kind of ring did he get her? Well, she’s rocking a 3.5-carat diamond in a Neil Lane-designed setting that Hemsworth helped create. Josh Hutcherson Wants ‘Some Sort Of Friendship’ With Kristen Stewart

‘Hunger Games’ star reconnects with his ‘Zathura’ co-star at the MTV Movie Awards for the first time in five years. By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson backstage at the MTV Movie Awards Photo: MTV News “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight” collided over the weekend at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards when Josh Hutcherson ran into his “Zathura” co-star backstage. “I actually got to talk to Kristen Stewart tonight for the first time in five years, at least,” Hutcherson revealed to MTV News. “That was awesome to connect with her again, especially after everything that’s happened to the both of us [with ‘Twilight’ and ‘The Hunger Games’]. It’s nice to just kind of be able to talk again and hopefully have some sort of friendship. She’s fantastic.” “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” slayed the dystopian thriller out of the Best Kiss and Movie of the Year awards, but the actor promised there are no hard feelings between the two franchises. “Honestly, you know what? I’ve never really felt it to be a competition. And I wish I could pretend like it was ’cause it’d be fun, [but] it’s so not. Their cast is fantastic, our cast is fantastic and there’s never been any bloodshed. … Not yet,” he teased. Hutcherson certainly didn’t go home empty handed. Thanks to his adoring fans, he took home the Golden Popcorn for Best Fight along with the honor of Best Male Performance . “Just to be here is always fun, and then to be nominated on top of that is amazing, but to actually win something is surreal,” he said. “Best Male means so much to me. The people I was in that category with, like Ryan Gosling, I’ve said publicly how much I want to be him. The fact that I’m considered on the somewhat same level, it’s just mind-blowing.” The excitement for the actor didn’t stop there. He caught one of the most iconic performances of Movie Awards history when Johnny Depp took the stage with the Black Keys to perform “Gold on the Ceiling.” “I missed Fun., which I was disappointed in ’cause I wasn’t there — as one does when they miss something,” he laughed. “But Depp and Black Keys, one of my favorite actors and one of my favorite bands combined, I was just like, my mind was exploding. It was incredible. “I was like, ‘How are there not more people losing their minds?’ ” he added. “It was pretty insane. I didn’t know he played the guitar, let alone could be a rock guy rockin’ out and do all these things. It was pretty awesome.” And like everyone else with a semblance of interest in this summer’s box office, Hutcherson was thrilled to take in some never-before-seen footage of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” “I’m a huge Batman fan. Growing up I actually thought I was Batman,” he said. “I wore a Batman mask and cape around until I was like 14 years old. For me, that movie is going to be the most epic thing of the summer, for sure.” Once he helps Katniss save the citizens of Panem, maybe he can take over Christian Bale’s role and rid Gotham of its evil? ” No. No way,” he said with a laugh. “Bruce Wayne, I have to stay away from that. It’s too much.”
