We still have nearly a year to go until Catching Fire hits the theaters, but Hunger Games fans are in for a thrill this week: The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly features Jennifer Lawrence on the cover as Katniss Everdeen – and also Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair! It’s our first look at this British actor in the key role: Claflin tells the magazine that he was petrified to film the infamous scene in which Finnick interacts with Katniss while donning nothing but strategically placed netting, explaining: It was “the scariest moment of my life. I’m on Twitter and so many people have been like ‘Don’t mess this up, or we will kill you.’” Considering the rising star is still alive – and in the running to play Four in Divergent – it’s safe to assume he nailed the role. This copy of EW will be available newsstands Friday, January 11.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire , The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Iron Man 3 are among the most anticipated blockbusters of 2013. The survey also ventures into who potential audiences are eyeing as potential breakouts over the year. 2012 was a strong year for film , delivering numerous high quality event movies and also a ton of very excellent serious fare as well. But perhaps it’s the overall high quality that made us take note of the moments in which we were wrenched out of our suspended disbelief, or maybe it’s just that the gods of moviedom knew something had to be done to prevent people from taking themselves too seriously. Either way, the year was blessed with some rather amazeballs moments of unintentional awkwardness that really forced us to step back and gasp, “Did that really happen?!” [ SPOILERS! ] Talia Al Ghul’s death in The Dark Knight Rises We can spend hours picking apart the problems with The Dark Knight Rises ( and we did! ), but the film probably could have glued itself together were it not for the moment Marion Cotillard was revealed ( da-da-daaaa ) to actually be the daughter of Ra’s Al Ghul (Liam Neeson) from Batman Begins . Not only did this reveal come out of nowhere, but it turned very quickly into a punchline when she died less than 10 minutes later, delivering her death monologue like she was having a ham-off with William Shatner. “My father’s work… IS DONE! Gasp. Gasp. GASP!” (Bonus points for the goofy look of disbelief on Jim Gordon’s, Batman’s and Selina Kyle’s faces. Even they know how silly this is.) Javier Bardem ‘s Dentures in Skyfall Skyfall is almost the perfect Bond film, right down to the amazing theme song. But the film nearly ground to a halt during the contractually obligated moment where Javier Bardem’s Silva has been captured and is interrogated by M – not because the scene isn’t awesome, but because for some reason, Silva’s already-creepy personality and damaged brain wasn’t enough for the film’s creative management. So they went and gave him the worst dentures ever. Every other moment Bardem is onscreen is truly terrifying, but this just felt like a bad parody. Jacob’s Love For A Baby In Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part Two It almost seems unfair to mention it, but even a film series littered with spectacular amounts of knowing camp managed to take itself very, very seriously at precisely the wrong moment: The moment in which a werewolf TOOK A TODDLER AS HIS SOULMATE. The Twilight series’ discomfort that began in Part One with Jacob’s baby-imprinting peaked in the Breaking Dawn Part 2 flash forward that showed Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and a grown Renesmee canoodling as a happy and ostensibly legal-and-totally-not-creepy-anymore couple. Every time Gale shows up in The Hunger Games I feel bad for Liam Hemsworth because he did a perfectly fine job playing Katniss’ childhood bestie/first love interest, Gale. Unfortunately, Hemsworth interpreted Gale as though he just walked in from the cast of Magic Mike , delivering the bro-iest take on an oppressed citizen of a dystopic, post-apocalyptic dictatorship in recorded history. I saw The Hunger Games three times in the theater. One of them was a press screening and even there, I heard snickers every time the camera panned to Hemsworth. Hopefully he bros it down a notch for the sequel. What about you, readers? Let us know your favorite moments that disrupted disbelief in comments. Year on year, Hollywood’s box office receipts rise. And while the 2012 numbers came in higher than 2011, the year marked a specifically good turn for the movie industry: the number of actual tickets sold went up for the first time in three years. The year’s big numbers come despite a generally slow summer blockbuster season. The number of admissions have had a general decline for a decade, with the number of tickets sold flat lining in 2011 with 1.29 billion, which was the lowest number since 1995, according to A.P. Dollar amounts typically rise despite the decline of audiences numbers due to the rise in ticket prices. But for 2012, ticket sales rose 5.6 percent to 1.36 billion by December 31. The number is still significantly below the peak of 1.6 billion sold in 2002. On the overall revenue side, the domestic box office should top out 6 percent ahead of the $10.2 billion figure last year and also top Hollywood’s previous $10.6 billion record set in 2009. Leading the list of box office hits was Disney’s The Avengers with $623 million domestically ($1.5 billion worldwide) and Warner Bros.’ third Batman installment The Dark Knight Rises with $448 million domestically ($1.1 billion worldwide). Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games grossed over $408 million ($686.5 million) while Sony’s James Bond pic Skyfall reached nearly $280 million as of Sunday (and will likely surpass $1 billion this week); The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 has a domestic total so far of nearly $282 million ($759.1 million worldwide); The Amazing Spider-Man topped out at just over $262 million in the U.S. ($752 million worldwide). Other big 2012 titles included Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted ($216 million) and Ice Age: Continental Drift ($161 million). And Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has totaled $157 million domestically since opening December 14th in the U.S. While it’s good news for Hollywood, the future of the box office dollar continues to like overseas. International audiences used to amount to less than half of a typical release, but that figure has swelled to two or even three times dollars spent domestically. Even pics such as Battleship and John Carter which tanked in the U.S. came out decently overseas ($209.7 million abroad for John Carter and $237.6 million for Battleship ). The domestic market has also been hampered with the advent of ever-sophisticated home entertainment systems, portable devices and video games. Still, most agree the big screen experience with an audience is the best way to see a movie. “Every home has a kitchen, but you can’t get into a good restaurant on Saturday night,” Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros told A.P. “People want to escape. That’s the nature of society. The adult population just is not going to sit home seven days a week, even though they have technology in their home that’s certainly an improvement over what it was 10 years ago. People want to get out of the house, and no matter what they throw in the face of theatrical exhibition, it continues to perform at a strong level.” [ Sources: A.P. , Box Office Mojo ]

There’s nothing like a good bit of alternate “What if?” casting to make you appreciate a movie whose stars’ chemistry works, so picture what might have been if David O. Russell had made his Oscar contender Silver Linings Playbook a few years back… with Vince Vaughn and Zooey Deschanel . “I wrote this five years ago and I rewrote it 20 times,” Russell told The Huffington Post . “And I thought I was going to make it with Vince Vaughn and Zooey Deschanel before The Fighter . And then it didn’t happen, for any number of reasons that were out of my hands.” Head here to read the full Silver Linings chat, in which Russell big ups stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence and offers little hope that we’ll ever see the infamously stalled Nailed . Meanwhile, as awards pundit Anne Thompson notes , Silver Linings is flagging in the crowded Oscar race after enjoying a burst of momentum in previous weeks. Maybe a celebrity endorsement from Oscar-winner Charlize Theron will help? Here’s Theron waxing enthusiastic over Lawrence in EW’s Entertainers of the Year cover story: “How is it that she can just stand there, not saying a word, and make us feel so much? Her talent is undeniable, and she is a force to be reckoned with.” Theron should know; she starred as the older version of a pre-fame, pre- Hunger Games Lawrence (or vice versa — Lawrence starred as the young Theron, opposite Revolution ‘s J.D. Pardo) in 2008’s The Burning Plain . [ Huffington Post , EW , Thompson on Hollywood ]
Because I know how much you guys enjoyed those pictures we had the other day of Jennifer Lawrence in a bikini , I’ve got more pictures of her at the beach again today. Granted, she’s in a full-body wetsuit because she’s busy filming the Hunger Games sequel, so it’s not quite as exciting, but let’s just say the suit hugs her in all the right places. Much like I hope to do some day, if I play my cards right. » view all 16 photos Related Articles: Jennifer Lawrence Stretches Out Her Shirt Jennifer Lawrence’s Tasty Front Meat Jennifer Lawrence Pumps It For Me Jennifer Lawrence Bikini Pictures For Thanksgiving Photos: Fameflynet , PacificCoastNews
