VIDEO: Shame Prompts Awesome ‘Den of Sin’ Campaign in South Carolina

Remember Shame ? The NC-17 one featuring Michael Fassbender as a sex addict, Carey Mulligan as his off-kilter sister, a couple of notorious ” late-night lovers ” and a thriving awards-season profile that imploded a month ago like a dying star, seemingly having taken the film with it? Right, that one. Now, as per the rules of the cosmos and/or art-house schemes in Columbia, S.C., that star has finally exploded back into consciousness in perhaps the best way possible. The flier pictured above was spotted in and around Columbia over the holiday weekend, urging local moviegoers to avoid the “den of sin” known as the Nickelodeon Theater. The 75-seat venue had finally booked Shame for a run, and without the benefit of a sustained Oscar campaign for erstwhile front-runner Fassbender , the fliers seemed to play right into the hands of Nickelodeon management. Too good to be true? WLTX Channel 19 is on the scene ! (Sorry in advance about the commercial.) The Onion would be proud. Sort of. Anyway, nicely played, Andy Smith! [ WLTX via Pullquote ]

Fanboy or Fascist?

“What the box office success of the re-released Special Editions told Hollywood is that the only way to create another global phenomenon is to make a new STAR WARS movie. 1997 was the start of the modern-day fanboy/geek culture that now runs Hollywood. Fanboy culture (Comic-Con, Harry Potter, Twilight , The Hunger Games, The Lord of the Rings , J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon, Marvel comics, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Glee , Aint-It-Cool-News, Attack of the Show ) is a groupthink mentality that claims to be democratic, what with its we-know-what’s-best-because-we’re-fans ethic, but is really pop culture fascism. And it’s the fans’ demand (remember, fan is short for fanatic), that led to Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace — the most hyped (and possibly most reviled) blockbuster in movie history.” [ Some Came Running ]

‘Hunger Games’ Film Shows ‘Flashier’ Seneca Crane

‘I used my understanding of show business and sort of magnified that to get a clear-cut vision of Seneca,’ Wes Bentley tells MTV News. By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate On Thursday, we treated our fellow “Hunger Games” fans to a fun and candid discussion with star Wes Bentley about his character’s curiously shaped beard and how its unique design and personality enhanced Bentley’s performance in the film as game master Seneca Crane. Now we have yet another snippet from that interview, in which we tackle some more serious issues, like what secretive scenes Bentley was most excited to film, as well as what kind of Seneca Crane we’ll see on the big screen come opening day, March 23. “It was all of it for me,” Bentley told MTV News about what scenes he was most eager to film. “I was curious to get on set and see what was going on. It was secret for everybody, so to get on and see what the look was and how it was feeling, I was excited to be a part of it every day.” The “American Beauty” actor admitted that because author Suzanne Collins doesn’t provide a meaty character arc for Crane, he wasn’t exactly sure how they were going to interpret him for the film. “For anyone who reads the books, he’s not mentioned much in the books, mostly because it’s told from Katniss’ first-person perspective, so I had no idea what kind of angle we were going to take on it, and I really didn’t have an idea until I got to set,” Bentley said. “[Director] Gary [Ross] had such a clear idea of it that it made it easy to dig into.” Bentley was hesitant to describe his version of Crane in detail, but after a bit of prodding, he did reveal that he took a few cues from his experiences in Hollywood to flesh out Crane’s persona a bit. “The idea of him was a flashier idea than what you would think. He’s more a flashy producer,” Bentley said. “I’m still a tech-y kind of guy, still a producer at heart, so I used my understanding of show business and sort of magnified that to get a clear-cut vision of Seneca. “He goes big. He’s all about the show,” he added about Crane’s all-for-the-sake-of-the-Games showmanship. “I went as far as I could without [going over the top], but what he’s about in his show is flashy, his look is very flashy, but he still tried to play it like he’s a cool cat.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Hunger Games’ Star Wes Bentley’s Beard ‘Did Half The Work’ For Him

Bentley, who plays Seneca Crane, tells MTV News his beard ‘took two hours to groom every day.’ By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz Wes Bentley Photo: MTV News For those of us who’ve been following the news surrounding all the comings and goings of the lucky “Hunger Games” castmembers, one of the most intriguing is Wes Bentley in the role of Seneca Crane . Not only does Bentley bring a sense of gravitas to the character, but as we’ve seen in the released photos, his costume and makeup design is especially interesting. MTV News recently caught up with the “American Beauty” actor to discuss his pivotal role in the film and how much fun he had sporting that curiously shaped beard, which, sadly, he no longer has. “I would have loved to have kept the beard but that beard took two hours to groom every day,” Bentley said. “I don’t want to spend that much time in the bathroom.” We then brought up the fact that the beard has caused quite a stir among fans, spawning its own Facebook page as well as our own tongue-in-cheek interview with the fancy fuzz . “I saw that. I had no idea my beard was so clever,” Bentley said of the interview, adding that he is flattered by all the attention the beard has received. “It’s such a cool look. Ve Neill, the makeup designer, did such an amazing job. It’s exciting that it’s getting that kind of attention.” Bentley insisted that all the credit for the design of the beard goes to Neill, and that all he did was grow out everything as much as it could go. “I usually come to set with a beard and my hair as long as I can get it so there are options. I saw Ve before we started shooting and she was excited I had a beard because she had something special in mind. It was all her. She went at it for like three hours trying to find the right shape; it was cool.” Bentley joked that having the peculiar design on his face did half of his acting work for him and that he sometimes wishes he kept it. “The beard did half the work,” he joked, later admitting that he got a few curious glances whenever he ventured out to run errands during filming. “I did go into Target a few times late at night with the beard, because my son was there, it was a little odd buying baby formula with this beard and some of the makeup on.” What questions do you have for Wes Bentley’s beard? Taylor Swift Reveals ‘Hunger Games’ Nods In ‘Safe & Sound’ Video

Just-premiered clip includes plenty of imagery from the best-selling book series to tide fans over until film’s release. By John Mitchell, with reporting by Sway Calloway Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News Talking exclusively to MTV News following the premiere of her new video for “Safe & Sound” from “The Hunger Games,” Taylor Swift revealed that the clip contains several references to the best-selling YA book series that fans should recognize. “I felt like I was really needing to pay tribute to this movie and tell this story,” Swift said. “There’s this moment in the music video where I find this mockingjay pin and hold it up.” For those who have not read the books, the mockingjay pin is one of the most iconic symbols from the series. It was given to the main character, Katniss Everdeen (played in the film by Jennifer Lawrence), as a token to take into the arena to remind her of her home district — District 12. The mockingjay and the pin itself are both symbols of rebellion in the books. The mockingjay is a species of bird inadvertently bred when the Capitol released “jabberjays” throughout the nation of Panem in an attempt to spy on its citizens. After the mission failed and the citizens of Panem learned how to feed lies to Capitol spies through the jabberjays, the Capitol ended the project but the birds bred with mockingbirds in the wild, creating the mockingjay, which the Capitol was never able to eradicate. We won’t spoil the rest, but the third book in the series is titled “Mockingjay,” and that isn’t just a reference to the bird or the pin anymore. “Having a music video with that much symbolism in it is something I’m not used to,” Swift continued. “Everyone who is a ‘Hunger Games’ fans knows what it means when there’s fire in the trees and they know what it means for the house to be burnt and they know what it means for the ‘Hunger Games’ pin to be covered in rust and old. Everybody can take their own meaning away from it, but it all goes back to the symbolism of the book.” To avoid spoiling the books and film, the only bit here that we’ll address are the burning trees, which can be seen throughout Swift’s video and briefly in the film’s second trailer. In the arena, the Gamesmakers use fire to keep the tributes from hiding in trees and to push groups of them into the same area so they can fight to the death for all to see. Swift’s “Safe & Sound” video has us psyched for the release of “The Hunger Games,” due March 23. “I’m now sort of like an infomercial for it,” Swift, a fan of the books, joked to MTV News about the series. Though it’s expected we’ll see main robot characters like Optimus Prime return, summer of 2014’s Transformers 4 — Trans4mers ? Tr4nsformers ? — will be a reboot, di Lorenzo says, because of course we need a Transformers reboot already. Of course. [ MTV ]
