Watch Taylor Swift’s Hunger Games Music Video: ‘Safe & Sound’

When I first heard Taylor Swift ‘s Hunger Games soundtrack single, the twangy country ballad “Safe & Sound,” I wasn’t so keen on how Swifty channeled teen heroine Katniss Everdeen, T-Bone Burnett’s support or no. (I did, however, dig the gentle melodics of country folk duo The Civil Wars, who back Swift on the song and share songwriting credits with her and Burnett.) Now the music video for the single has debuted, a dreamy nature-themed joint that lovingly follows Swift as she traipses barefoot around the woods sharing meaningful glances with deer and twigs. While “Safe & Sound” has grown on me as a song, I still can’t totally sign off on Swift as a Katniss figure (the lyrics are inspired by Suzanne Collins’ book, and suggest the inner life of Katniss as she leaves her family behind in District 12 to fight in the Games). But Swift is lovely to look at, even if this video could easily be passed off as an Anthropologie ad or, you know, a tribute to Cold Mountain . The backdrop is a nice nod to Katniss’s imagined home in the region otherwise known as the Appalachians, where District 12 has been delineated in the nation of Panem in The Hunger Games trilogy. And, look! Swift finds a mockingjay pin in her disheveled country cabin! I’d have loved to have seen Swift pick up a bow and arrow and go hunt down that deer, or hide from intruders in the dirt, or wrassle with a gang of murderous youngsters, but I get it. She’s Taylor Swift. She is pristine in her white muslin dress, warbling beautiful melodies all alone in her thoughtful solitude. She is more Primrose than Katniss. Meanwhile, the shortest stick drawn goes to Joy Williams of The Civil Wars, who’s stuck playing third fiddle to Swift. For a full minute I thought she was playing Katniss’s near-catatonic mother. Anyways, check it out below and tell us what you think – an appropriate accompaniment to the March 23 pic? Kendall and Kylie Jenner Strike a Chic Pose

It’s really only a matter of time before Kendall and Kylie Jenner are on the red carpets of Las Vegas and/or headlining their own reality show. For now, though, the 14-year old and 16-year old are simply following in their sisters’ modeling footsteps, the latest example being a shoot with celebrity photographer Nick Saglimbeni. A rather grown up, chic shoot at that: Kylie Tweeted the photo above last night, as the siblings are going all glam in trendy black dresses and some serious hairdos. Might modeling take the place of college for the twosome? It sounds that way, based on a recent quote from father Bruce Jenner: “If they want to go to college, certainly, I think it’s a good idea. But I’m not the advocate of, ‘You’ve got to go to college!’ I think by the time they graduate from high school, they will probably be in a position to go right to working.” Let’s just hope neither is pitching the same product as their mother any time soon.

Kelly Rowland Pushes for U.S. X Factor Gig

Simon Cowell may not have offered Beyonce $100 millon, but he made it clear in a recent interview that he’d love for the former Destiny’s Child singer to sit at the judging table on season two of The X Factor . We wonder if he’d settle for another ex-member of that group, however. Speaking to CNN this week, Kelly Rowland – who served as a panelist in Great Britain – made it clear she’d embrace the same role here on Fox. “It would be awesome to be a judge over here for The X Factor ,” the artist said . “I really enjoyed my time over in the U.K. being a judge. That was a great opportunity and a great experience, and I would love to do it again.” But is Rowland a big enough name to help Cowell boost the ratings of a series he swore would outdraw American Idol ? We doubt it. Stay tuned. [Photo: WENN.com]

Kevin Youkilis Engaged! To Tom Brady’s Sister!

Kevin Youkilis is keeping it all in the Boston family. The Red Sox third baseman is engaged to Julie Brady, according to The Boston Herald , the sister of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Youkilis first met Julie – a teacher and the mother of a five-year old daughter – at a 2010 party thrown for the Patriots party after they was knocked out of the 2010 playoffs. She’s one of the signal caller’s three sisters. The engagement announcement comes as a time when both Boston stars could use some good new: Brady and the Pats lost in the Super Bowl last weekend, while Youkilis and the Red Sox made history with a September 2011 collapse that cost them a spot in the American League playoffs.

‘Hunger Games’ Won’t Be Narrated By Katniss

Director Gary Ross tells MTV News the first-person perspective will be shown ‘cinematically,’ not through voice-over. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Gary Ross Photo: MTV News For our fellow “Hunger Games” fans who are following each and every detail released about the upcoming big-screen adaptation, one of the key questions is how the filmmakers will address the fact that a large amount of the story is told via Katniss’ inner monologue. Will we be hearing Jennifer Lawrence narrate throughout the film via voice-over or will we see the action from multiple characters’ perspectives? Today is our lucky day, because we have an answer straight from director Gary Ross himself, who told MTV News recently that after much careful consideration he is not using any voice-over. “I’m not using voice-over for her. This thing is all from Katniss’ perspective,” he said of the story. “It is a first-person point of view. How do we put the viewer immediately and urgently in that experience they had when they read the book and they’re in Katniss Everdeen’s shoes? A lot of that is done cinematically. I spent a lot of time wondering and thinking about at the beginning of this process, ‘What does it really mean to be in the character’s point of view cinematically?’ I looked at a lot of really interesting references for that, but it comes down to: You don’t know more than the character knows.” Ross said we will be experiencing everything from Katniss’ perspective; we just won’t be hearing her talk us through it. “You wonder about what she’s wondering about, you worry about what she’s worrying about,” he explained. “You don’t know things she doesn’t know, and as such, you wander and experience things through her eyes, so that’s the first job: How do we make people feel they’re walking in Katniss’ shoes and encountering the same obstacles and challenges she is?” he said. “A lot is done cinematically and a lot is having someone as good as Jen Lawrence.” The “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit” helmer was cagey when asked about the specific look and style of the film but did promise they did everything they could to make things as realistic and believable as possible. “I don’t want to start giving specific scenes away, I know you understand that. I will say movies can do a lot in imagery where you can assimilate at lot of the world there pretty quickly,” he said when asked how much backstory he felt he needed to include or whether he’ll just jump right into the story at the start of the film. “The trick there is to make the world as real and as specific as it was when you read the book, be very precise about the production design and what this world looks like, and I think we’ve created a pretty vivid world.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Can Bruno Mars’ Hooligans Take Home Grammy Gold?

MTV News takes a look at the history of Album of the Year nominee Doo-Wops & Hooligans. By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars Photo: Redferns Bruno Mars showed he was more than just B.o.B and Travie McCoy’s hook guy when he dropped Doo-Wops & Hooligans back in October 2010 — and he’s got an Album of the Year nomination at Sunday’s Grammys to prove it. With an ear for vintage-sounding details and a love for a good melody, Mars unleashed an album that would spawn megahits and make the Hawaii native (and former Elvis Presley impersonator) a household name, not to mention the go-to guy for the likes of hip-hop legends Eminem and Lil Wayne. For the smash debut, Mars hooked up with his production team, the Smeezingtons (Mars, Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine), as well as A-list talent like songwriter Claude Kelley, producer and collaborator Damian Marley and former Fall Out Boy leading man Patrick Stump. The result: an album that paid homage to Mars’ love of, you guessed it, doo-wop and proved that he has a talent for crafting modern-day pop songs that could connect with a wide-ranging audience. Never forgetting his roots, he also worked with “F— You” collaborator Cee Lo Green and brought B.o.B on the album. “I want the world to fall in love with my music, that’s what I’m doing music for. I want to be able to do shows and have people come and see me do my thing,” Mars explained to MTV News back in 2010 about the album. His wish certainly came true. When it dropped, Doo-Wops & Hooligans debuted at #3 on the Billboard albums chart and has since sold nearly 1.5 million copies. The love didn’t end there: “Just the Way You Are” and “Grenade” topped the charts, and “The Lazy Song” peaked at #4. Mars found a way to keep everyone talking, displaying his creativity not only in song, but also in videos. The clips for those tracks were almost as buzzworthy as the songs themselves. The VMA-nominated video for “Grenade” managed to capture the sadness of the song, with Mars dragging a piano through the streets of Los Angeles only to find that his lady love no longer loves him. “It was my concept,” the singer explained about the video. “I said, ‘I want to drag a piano.’ I got my friend Nabil to come direct it, and it was a risk, because I still hear jokes to this day like, ‘What the hell you doing dragging a piano?’ ” he said. “But it’s my art, so shut up!” He also had everyone buzzing when he dropped his video for “The Lazy Song.” Where “Grenade” relied on heart, the “Lazy” video was all about making everyone laugh. It featured dance crew Poreotics (from “America’s Best Dance Crew”) done up in monkey masks dancing alongside Mars. In fact, it even got a Best Choreography nod at the VMAs . “We worked really hard on it, and we wanted to give people something to laugh at and show personality in the song and what we’re talking about,” he said. ” ‘The Lazy Song’ is not necessarily the song you want to hear in the club, but we put our monkey dance to it.” Now his focus is on trying to take home a shining Grammy statue come February 12. And it’s not just his album the Grammys have recognized, but also his heartbreaking ballad “Grenade,” which is up for three awards at the show including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. “Worked extremely hard on ‘Grenade.’ That was the hardest song on the whole album to finish, because we knew we had something and to get all that emotion out,” he explained. “I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we’re really happy that that song is being recognized, because that’s like our trophy song. “Incredible. We worked really hard,” he added about all the recognition the album has received. “We worked hard in the studio right down the street, actually. And it’s a little tiny shack, but for the two years we were in there, we just locked ourselves in that room and came up with Doo-Wops & Hooligans. ” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss Sway and James Montgomery live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com.
