‘Snow White And The Huntsman’: Charlize Theron Vs. Her Costume

‘The costumes were more damaging than the actual fight sequences,’ actress says during ‘MTV First,’ tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Charlize Theron in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: Universal Studios Of all the things to be psyched to see in Kristen Stewart’s upcoming action adventure “Snow White and the Huntsman,” we are most enthused about the A-list girl-on-girl action that is Stewart’s Snow White vs. Charlize Theron ‘s Evil Queen Ravenna. With just a few more hours to wait until “MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman,” starting tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV, here’s a little sneak peek of Theron talking about those highly anticipated fight sequences and the surprising culprit responsible for her on-set bruises. “The costumes were more damaging than the actual fight sequences,” Theron revealed. “I was way more bruised from my costume than I was from [fighting with Stewart]. Doing a fight sequence in your sweatpants is different than wearing an 80-pound steel thing. I don’t know, you were in leather,” she said to her co-star Chris Hemsworth. “It’s different. [Stewart] was in full metal, I was in full metal, just getting down, it took us four hours,” she said, speaking of the complex setting involved in filming her showdown with Stewart. The “Young Adult” actress has been reluctant to divulge any gory details about their climactic fight scenes, but she did offer up some praise for the “Twilight” star. “She was a good fight,” Theron said . The bitch brought it!” Speaking of those precarious costumes, the film’s Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood recently told us that despite the metal confinements, Theron knew how to work it in her dark and dangerous-looking wardrobe. “You can’t design for [Queen] Ravenna without having Charlize to work the costume. We had a great time,” Atwood said . “She wanted to have fun with it and not be too strapped into the clich

‘Snow White And The Huntsman’ Stars Bring Exclusive Clip To MTV!

MTV News is very proud to announce that we will be offering fans an exclusive first look at the film via “MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman” on Tuesday, May 8. Stewart and co-stars Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin will be live on MTV’s airwaves at 7:56 p.m. ET to premiere the exclusive clip, after which they will stick around for a Q&A on MTV.com hosted by MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. Fans can get in on the action by submitting their reactions to the clip in the comments section or on Twitter (using @MTVNews, hashtag #MTVFirst). During “MTV First,” the four stars will also answer your Twitter questions and dish on the very latest news. In order to help tide you over until the big reveal next week, here’s a little interview snippet from Stewart in which she discusses her preparation for mastering the English accent required for her role as the titular Snow White. “I worked on it for a while, so I was really lucky, I didn’t have to jump right in,” Stewart said of her ample pre-production time. “I would have been terrified [if I had to jump in], so I felt really confident with it when I went into it. I didn’t feel like I was attached to specific lines and stuff, which I would kill myself if I felt that I had to know exactly what I was going to say.” Stewart has received rave reviews for her performance from director Rupert Sanders. “Kristen is a very driven, visceral, intuitive actress. From a director’s point of view, it’s great to get into her headspace,” Sanders told MTV News . “We did a lot of work together on the script and character, and she really helped inform me how that character was feeling, which really helped my process getting the character onscreen. Kristen was doing a lot of her stunt work, she was riding horses, she was jumping from high precipices into freezing cold water, she was fighting dwarves — she’s gung-ho.” Don’t miss “MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman” on Tuesday, May 8, at 7:56 p.m. on MTV, followed by a Q&A with Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin on MTV.com! ‘Snow White And The Huntsman’ Sequel In The Works?

It’s more than a month until first Kristen Stewart film is released, but David Koepp is reportedly in talks to pen a sequel script. By Kara Warner Chris Hemsworth, and Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: Universal Studios Despite the fact that we’re still a little more than a month away from the release of “Snow White and the Huntsman,” there are already rumblings of a sequel. According to Deadline , Universal has apparently already begun talking to screenwriter David Koepp about writing a sequel to the film, which is one of this summer’s most highly anticipated movies. Koepp certainly has enough credibility in drafting scripts for big blockbusters: He has screenplay credits on “Jurassic Park,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Spider-Man,” “War of the Worlds” and “Men in Black III.” Naturally, we don’t know what happens to the characters over the course of the film, but star Kristen Stewart has already expressed interest in reprising her role as the titular Snow White. “To be totally candid and honest with you, when I first signed on to this thing, the idea of doing another franchise was like, ‘Wow, [we’ll] cross that bridge when it comes.’ It was something so far outside my realm of thinking,” she told MTV News when asked if she’d be game for more action and adventure as the fairest one of all. “I was so focused on the first one, and I thought, ‘Maybe, maybe,’ but I’ve got stars in my eyes. I’m literally over the moon about what I’m doing right now,” she said of her work on “Huntsman.” “Yes, I would love to [do more ‘Snow White’ films].” “Huntsman” director Rupert Sanders is reportedly Universal’s choice to helm the sequel if it happens, and judging from his positive comments about working with Stewart , it seems likely the pair could team up again. “Kristen is a very driven, visceral, intuitive actress. From a director’s point of view, it’s great to get into her headspace,” Sanders said. “We did a lot of work together on the script and character, and she really helped inform me how that character was feeling, which really helped my process getting the character onscreen. Kristen was doing a lot of her stunt work, she was riding horses, she was jumping from high precipices into freezing cold water, she was fighting dwarves — she’s gung-ho.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Snow White and the Huntsman.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Florence Welch Inspired By Evil Queen Ravenna For ‘Snow White’ Track

Welch says she got a lot of material for ‘Breath of Life’ from Charlize Theron’s beautifully wicked character. By James Montgomery Florence Welch Photo: Samir Hussein/ Redferns When Florence Welch was asked to write a song for the upcoming “Snow White and the Huntsman” soundtrack, she was given the opportunity to watch a select few scenes from the film itself … and almost automatically, she found herself drawing inspiration from a rather unlikely source: Namely, Charlize Theron’s wicked Queen Ravenna. “The Queen is just this incredible character; so hungry for life but so dead inside. She’s sort of eternal, but inside there’s nothing. She’s kind of like charcoal or something,” Welch told MTV News on Thursday (March 29). “[There are] these amazing scenes where she’s kind of picking out birds’ hearts and eating them. [She has] this thirst for youth and for life, but for what kind of life? This darkness, but she’s so beautiful, so it’s this kind of juxtaposition between beauty and, ultimately, death.” So, in a bit of a, uh, non-traditional move, Welch ended up writing a song called “Breath of Life,” which is sung very much from the perspective of the Queen herself (“I got a lot of material from her!” she laughed. “Beauty, death, life … it was pushing all of my buttons.”) So you can imagine her surprise when, after submitting the song, she found herself sitting in London’s Abbey Road studio, watching it all come together under the care of famed composer James Newton Howard. “We went in and demoed the track, these big, clattering drums, huge bass sounds and everything was very intense … and then we sent that to the guys in L.A. who composed it. And it was amazing to see the music we played being turned into this amazing orchestral thing,” Welch laughed. “You feel in a bit of a way like you’re kind of making it up as you go along, and then when you see it done, laid out before you in such a beautiful, orchestral fashion, it’s really incredible. And then we all went into Abbey Road and it was one of the best days of my life; I love choirs and I love choral music, and there was a 60-piece choir singing the vocal parts that I had written. When the baritones came in, I nearly wept, it was so emotional.” And thanks to all that, in a still-growing career that’s seemingly one highlight after the next, Welch said that writing and recording “Breath” was perhaps her favorite moment to date. Even if the whole 60-member choir thing did give her management team palpitations. “My manager was looking at me going ‘Do not get used to this. We cannot afford this 60-piece choir!’ ” she laughed. “It was just wonderful. Me and Isa [Summers, Welch’s Machine partner, and co-writer of the track] were in there, these young women who made music for love, but with not much money or much reason. … It was a really proud day for us. And, musically, for the composers at Universal to have understood the song and see it played out so beautifully, it was an amazing day. We felt a bit proper.” Who else do you hope to hear on the “Snow White and the Huntsman” soundtrack? Leave your pick in the comments section below! Snow White And The Machine: Florence Welch Tapped For ‘Huntsman’ Soundtrack

‘Breath of Life’ to be featured in Kristen Stewart movie, arriving June 1. By James Montgomery Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine Photo: Universal/ Island Records “Snow White and the Huntsman” doesn’t hit theaters until June 1, but we already have information about the film’s soundtrack — and just who will be involved in it. Namely, Florence and the Machine , who will channel all their ethereal, otherworldly magic into a brand-new song — called “Breath of Life” — for the “Huntsman” soundtrack. We’ve yet to hear “Breath,” but thanks to the good folks at Universal, we know it’s one of many songs featured on the soundtrack and comes backed by a full orchestra and choir. At press time, there’s still no info on who else will join Florence Welch on the soundtrack or when it will be released, but Flo definitely seems like a natural fit for the film, which stars Kristen Stewart as the titular heroine, Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen and Chris Hemsworth as the other titular character, the Huntsman. Judging by an early trailer for the film , this most certainly isn’t your mom’s adaptation of Snow White. Instead, it gets plenty dark and features Snow in full battle mode, armor and all. Late last year, Stewart praised the film and said she was having such a good time filming “Huntsman” that she was already open to making sequels . In particular, she loved punching Hemsworth in the kisser. “It made such a sound, it was in a scene,” Stewart recalled of the big moment. “Girls, if you’ve ever wondered if it works, it works. It literally spun him right around. I was supposed to miss him by this much. I basically knocked him right out of his close-up. It’ll definitely be in the movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Snow White and the Huntsman.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . GALLERY: Tarsem on the Late Eiko Ishioka and the Fairytale Look of Mirror Mirror

He’s painted cinematic landscapes of psychosexual kink ( The Cell ), childhood fantasy ( The Fall ), and ancient Greek 3-D abs ( Immortals ), but in this week’s Mirror Mirror director Tarsem takes a turn into uncharted territory: The family-friendly fairytale. Turning his attentions to the story of Snow White , Tarsem creates another visually rich fantasyland of imagination — and gives the fabled princess a post-modern streak to boot — with the help of the late Oscar-winning costume designer and longtime collaborator Eiko Ishioka ( Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters , Bram Stoker’s Dracula , Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark ), who passed away in January at the age of 73. In an exclusive chat, Tarsem takes Movieline through his work with Ishioka and the whimsical, inventive, and utterly imaginative designs of Mirror Mirror that comprise their final collaboration on film. GALLERY: Tarsem on Eiko Ishioka and the Fairytale Look of Mirror Mirror Head over to the Mirror Mirror Gallery here for Tarsem’s notes on the costumes, design, and visual inspirations for Mirror Mirror , or scroll down for additional thoughts as Tarsem discusses his relationship with Ishioka, his approach to the Snow White mythology, and his plans to take a break from heavily visual storytelling with his next project. ON HIS LONGTIME COLLABORATION WITH EIKO ISHIOKA Tarsem says he was looking for a break from his heavily visual films when he decided to take on Mirror Mirror for the chance to work one last time with Ishioka, who succumbed to cancer only months after production wrapped. “On a personal level I did not want to do more than three visual films,” he said, “but the reason that really pushed it together was that I knew that Eiko did not have more than a year to go. She did not have more than a movie left in her. I said, okay, let’s do a visual film. Eiko’s kind of like me, unfortunately – she has only two gears, full speed or off, and I just knew that she wanted to work.” ON THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING SNOW WHITE A HEROINE CAPABLE OF SAVING HERSELF Tarsem’s Snow White (played by Lily Collins ) springs into action as a swashbuckling bandit princess in Mirror Mirror’s post-modern take — a far cry from the original Disney animation. Tarsem sought to make a family film that simultaneously rejected the “damsel in distress” angle. “I had done three R-rated movies and thought I wanted to do a family film,” he said. “Everyone asked me again and again if I wanted to do a gritty, R-rated Snow White and I said no! The original story, as beloved as it is, is a ten-minute story. It’s just about vanity. I’d never seen the original animation until about a month ago, and I thought I would like to have a different take on it.” ON THE OTHER SNOW WHITE MOVIE, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Tarsem had to scrap plans to release Mirror Mirror in 3-D in order to get into theaters ahead of the competition — Rupert Sanders’ action adventure Snow White and the Huntsman , starring Kristen Stewart . “We had to come out first because we are a smaller movie than the big, grand action-adventure,” Tarsem explained. “It’s always easier to sell those on a trailer. I said, ‘We have to come first.’ They could afford to come second, but we couldn’t afford to come second.” ON HIS NEXT MOVIE — A ‘NON-VISUAL’ PROJECT “By that I don’t mean handheld, gritty, running around stuff — it’s not going to be Law & Order – but a contemporary tale. The film I’m going towards right now is a very simple drone attack from the perspective of the guys who fly the planes that are actually flying in Africa, but they do it from a little container in the desert. It’s a drone attack, so what are the politics involved in saying, ‘Go ahead and do this’ and just watching the collateral damage of when you can give a go-ahead and when you cannot, and how the same act feels completely different on the ground than for the people in the sky who come and knock them out? It’s what right now I’m gearing towards, but anything that’s interesting right now that isn’t fantasy oriented, a tale that isn’t completely designed, is what I want to do. This is the closest I’m to it right now and I’m going to go for it.” GALLERY: Tarsem on Eiko Ishioka and the Fairytale Look of Mirror Mirror Mirror Mirror is in theaters Friday. ‘Snow White’ Trailer Focuses On Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart Rivalry

Clip show Theron’s cold-hearted Queen Ravenna on the hunt for Stewart’s sword-wielding Snow White. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart in the “Snow White and the Huntsman” trailer Photo: Universal “Snow White and the Huntsman” is certainly the antidote to “Mirror Mirror.” For every giggle that Julia Roberts throws about in the trailer for “Mirror,” Charlize Theron (Queen Ravenna) throws a cold stare and an even colder threat in a new “Show White” trailer released Monday (March 19). Bathed in dark images and darker themes, this “Snow White” blockbuster focuses on the bloodthirsty queen in her hunt for revenge and eternal power. The key to continue her tyranny and remain the fairest of them all is Snow White’s (Kristen Stewart’s) heart. Enter the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), who has been ordered to get that heart, or else. With the classical premise laid out, the trailer is full of a sword-wielding, chainmail-clad Snow White, out to use her innate good to destroy the queen’s evil. The trailer focuses on the good-versus-evil plot while teasing the film’s eye-catching effects and landscapes. Where Ravenna brings destruction, Snow brings light, love and life. Much of Stewart’s role in the trailer relies on her ability to look both tough and vulnerable. “I see what she sees,” Stewart’s Snow reveals at one point. “I can kill her.” The trailer closes with Ravenna pledging, “Let them come,” as her evil cackle plays out the trailer. When Theron and Stewart stopped by the “Today” show Monday (March 19), Theron talked about reviving fairytales for modern audiences. “I think these stories, thematically, bleed into a lot of stuff that’s relevant,” she said. “So I’m not shocked that we’re having an outbreak of a lot of these kinds of classic fairytales being retold. There’s a way to do them in different worlds, and I think that’s the case with this. They were definitely made for very specific audiences and very different audiences.” So, was Stewart shocked by turning “Snow White” into an action film? “It is [an action movie]. It had a reason,” she told the “Today” show on Monday (March 19). “It never felt like it was a movie where you were just trying to have a strong girl character be badass. You want to join the cause, like any good script you read. I believe in it so much.” What do you think of the “Snow White and the Huntsman” trailer? Leave your comment below!
