‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ Trailer Premieres

First sneak peek at Tom Cruise’s fourth ‘Mission’ teases death-defying stunts. By Kara Warner Paula Patton and Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: Paramount Pictures If there is one thing we can count on from Tom Cruise in a “Mission: Impossible” movie, it is mind-blowing action and stunt sequences. From his first foray into the spy-tastic world of Ethan Hunt to his fourth, the upcoming “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” Cruise has been one-upping himself in the stunt category. And judging from the first official trailer, which was released Tuesday evening (June 28), his work on the fourth “Mission,” directed by “The Incredibles” helmer Brad Bird, is no exception. The trailer opens with the ominous words of Tom Wilkinson, whose character name we have yet to learn, essentially laying out the nuts and bolts of the plot. “An hour ago, a bomb blew up the Kremlin,” he says, as footage of the Kremlin blowing up appear onscreen. “The president has initiated Ghost Protocol, the entire IMF has been disavowed,” he explains of Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) spy organization. “Now, I’ve been ordered to take you to Washington where they will hang the Kremlin bombing on you and your team, unless you were to escape after assaulting Brandt and me,” says Wilkinson, shown seated in a car with Brandt (played by Jeremy Renner) and Hunt. “But if any of your team is caught, they’ll be branded as terrorists.” “So what happens now?” Hunt asks. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it,” Wilkinson begins, recalling the series’ famous line before being cut off so he won’t spoil the plot entirely (although, if were to guess, the mission is probably to prove his team’s innocence in the Kremlin bombing). His words are followed by a series of quick cuts that showcase and introduce the various castmembers, potential villains, etc. Renner as Brandt, Paula Patton, a serious-looking Josh Holloway, Cruise as Hunt in a series of wardrobe changes ranging from dapper formal wear to more rugged leather. Then we see snippets of those famous Cruise-brand action sequences: car chases, underwater escapes, machine-gun fire, hand-to-hand combat, lots of running, more fighting and martial arts, more running, and plenty of spy-associated breaking and entering, which all leads up to a potential character reveal about Brandt. “Who are you really, Brandt?” Hunt asks, in a scene where the two characters apparently come to blows. “We all have our secrets,” Brandt responds. “Don’t we, Ethan?” Cue the famous bars of Lalo Schrifin’s “Theme From Mission: Impossible,” which plays over Hunt looking out over Dubai, standing on the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. This is followed by a quick cut to a previous scene wherein tech master Benji Dunn (played by Simon Pegg) shows Hunt how to use a pair of fancy gadget gloves, which we soon see help him scale the Burj. “You’re not going to make it!” Brandt yells to Hunt, who is climbing and jumping up and around the side of the building. “You’re not helping,” Hunt says, before the final shot, which shows the superspy repelling away from the Burj with a rope, which he loses midair and looks to plummet to the ground. Fade to black and the film’s official titling. Cruise’s wife, Katie Holmes , told MTV News recently that she was privy to a sneak peek of the film and that it’s “amazing.” “The movie is going to be very cool and intense and the best ‘Mission’ yet.” First-time live-action director Bird echoed Holmes’ sentiments , adding that Cruise did a lot of the craziest and most dangerous stunts himself. “It’s big and it is crazy,” he said. “I think the craziest thing is that [the stunts] are real they’re not digital. That’s Tom Cruise on the tallest building in the world, he’s doing all that stuff,” Bird said of Cruise’s death-defying stunts. “People won’t believe it, but we shot it in IMAX so it’s there for everyone to see.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Remembering Bill Erwin, the ‘Old Man’ from Seinfeld

Admittedly, when I’m flipping through channels and come across the episode of Seinfeld titled “The Old Man,” I never even considered the possibility that the old man in question in this episode, played by Bill Erwin, was still alive. This episode aired in 1993! And Erwin wasn’t someone who just looked old like Wilford Brimley (fun fact: This year, Tom Cruise, the guy filming a new Mission: Impossible movie, will be as old as Brimley was when he filmed Cocoon ) — Erwin was almost 80 when he filmed his role. Sadly, Erwin passed away this past week at the age of 96, but he leaves a treasure trove of popular culture appearances behind.

Jeremy Renner Talks Breakout Year, ‘Mission: Impossible’ And ‘Avengers’

‘Hurt Locker’ star is one of the actors we’re most thankful for in 2010. By Eric Ditzian Tom Cruise performs a stunt in Dubai for “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: Barcroft/Fame Pictures This time of year puts MTV News into a thankful spirit, as we look back at the actors and filmmakers whose work has kept our hearts warm through the winter months and has made us sweat with joy during the summer season. And so each year, we give our thanks. In the past, we’ve feted Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Reynolds and Quentin Tarantino . Thankful Week 2010 kicks off with a chat with Jeremy Renner, because his accomplishments over the past 12 months are not only impressive, but richly deserved. This year, his breakout turn in “The Hurt Locker” landed him at the Oscars with a Best Actor nomination, one of nine the Iraq war flick nabbed. Casting directors soon came a-calling. Having already signed up for Ben Affleck’s “The Town” (a role that led to some early Oscar buzz once again), Paramount tapped Renner to star alongside Tom Cruise in the resurrection of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. And this summer, the 39-year-old found himself at Comic-Con, standing besides the likes of Downey and Samuel L. Jackson, after being cast as Hawkeye in “The Avengers,” Marvel Studios’ upcoming superhero all-star flick. Mission, accomplished. These days, Renner is stationed in Dubai, where’s he’s pulling wicked stunts alongside Cruise in “Mission.” During a break from shooting, he called up MTV News to chat about his crazy year, his current production and why he’s so excited to get busy with “Avengers.” MTV : Congratulations on the stellar year. You start off the year with an Oscar nomination, you’re in “The Town,” you land “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and “The Avengers.” Does 2010 feel like a landmark year for you? Jeremy Renner : Over the last 20 years, it certainly is one of the bigger ones. It’s been a tremendous year. I feel very lucky in some ways and ready in other ways. I couldn’t be more blessed. I’m just excited to get to work. MTV : You’d been around and respected in the industry for a while, but you hadn’t notched that true breakout role until “Hurt Locker.” Were you starting to think it wasn’t going to happen? Renner : Well, I felt pretty happy over the decade working so much and getting to do some great films. It’s just to be able to do more and stretch and grow as an artist. It never felt like there was a timeline. I was ecstatic about where I was over the last 10 years. I’m almost 40, but I don’t look 40, and I don’t play 40, and I’m not going to for a while! MTV : Has there been one surreal point over the last year that kind of encapsulates everything for you? Renner : That’s almost every day, brother, for the last year. I say to my friends, “Is this real? Is this really happening?” I constantly pinch myself, because I can’t believe I’m in Dubai shooting “Mission: Impossible.” I embrace all of it, even the negative things that come along with this success. MTV : What’s been negative? Renner : I’m a pretty private individual, and I like to stay private. And I’m pretty free-spirited and pretty giving, and I get taken advantage of, just being too nice sometimes. It’s nice to go to Starbucks for a coffee, but it gets difficult when you have to have 19 conversations to get a cup of coffee. People are usually very respectful, but sometimes I don’t want to chat. It’s a wonderfully high-class problem. I just have to be conscious of what I do and what I say and where I go. I have to be careful about speaking off the cuff. I do have a mouth on me. MTV : I imagine standing up at Comic-Con next to all those guys was fairly surreal. What was going through your head at that point? Renner : That’s bananas. That’s bananas for everybody, for Robert Downey and Sam Jackson. You can never get used to that unless you’re Bono. Maybe he’s not used to that. It’s a strange thing, having 7,000 people scream at you, whether they love you or they hate you. I don’t know, it could have been half and half. MTV : Come on, the fans have embraced you! Renner : Yeah, I’m pretty lucky about that. But it’s intense! MTV : What’s been the biggest difference for you professionally since “Hurt Locker”? Is there less for you to prove in auditions? Are you getting the offers you didn’t before? Renner : Not having to prove anything — that’s been around for a while. Within the industry, that awareness has been around, which has been great. But now things happen faster and they happen more frequently. I’m attached now to big franchise movies. “Mission: Impossible” happened so quickly. And then “The Avengers.” This is going to be the next 10 years of my life. That’s strange, because I’m used to moving on and going to the next movie. MTV : And now you’re hanging out with Tom Cruise in Dubai. Renner : I go to work, and I can’t wait to learn from him. I just got to see a little teaser reel from the first couple months I’ve been filming. It was crazy. MTV : What’s the craziest stunt you’ve had to do? Renner : Everything. I haven’t gotten to work too much in terms of acting stuff, but the stunts have been insane. Tom has been doing loads. He’s crazy, that guy. It’s unbelievable. He’s fearless. He’s great to watch. He inspires me to want to be better. I’m training in the gym and working out and fighting and doing everything I can to try and keep up. I’m doing hand-to-hand combat, Muay Thai and kung fu and learning how to take someone out quickly. I need to look like I know what I’m doing! MTV : Well, we’re very thankful that “Mission” is coming back, and we’re very, very thankful “Avengers” is finally happening. Renner : I was just texting with Downey before I called you. MTV : Has there been a lot of communication between all you guys? Renner : We did a creative meeting with everyone months ago before everyone took off. We met with [director] Joss [Whedon] and the cast and Marvel, just in terms of the script and where we want it to go. It was a little powwow. It feels like a very collaborative effort. Right now we’re off and dividing and conquering, but soon we’ll link up and get the rest of the guys and work on that. I’m very thankful for everyone I get to work with. It’s a tremendous time in my life. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long. Jeremy Renner Signed For ‘Mission: Impossible IV’

Paramount announced addition of ‘Hurt Locker’ actor to star alongside Tom Cruise in next ‘M:I’ installment. By Kara Warner Jeremy Renner Photo: Kevin Winter/ WireImage From “The Hurt Locker” to Hawkeye in “The Avengers” to a role opposite superspy Ethan Hunt, Jeremy Renner’s career is on the rise, as Paramount announced today that the seasoned yet rising star will appear as an operative alongside Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible IV.” According to Deadline , Paramount production chief Adam Goodman feels Renner “has a Daniel Craig quality” that he wants for the role. Sources tell the site that the studio was also looking for an actor who might be able to continue on with the franchise, should Cruise choose not to return in the future (Cruise is expected to return for a fifth installment). Other actors considered for the role include Tom Hardy (“Inception”), Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Kevin Zegers, Christopher Egan and Renner’s “Hurt Locker” co-star Anthony Mackie. Although the production has had a few bumps and uncertainties along the way, Cruise has been vocal about his commitment to bring in new talent to the franchise. “My whole thing with the series is always having a new director come on and put their stamp on ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ” he told MTV News recently. “Brian De Palma was first, then John Woo, J.J. Abrams and now Brad Bird, so it will be Brad Bird’s ‘Mission: Impossible.’ ” Regarding his thoughts on the story line — which is, of course, heavily under wraps — Cruise said simply: “It’s sick. It’s fun, really fun.” Ever since his star-making turn in last year’s award-season darling (and Best Picture winner) “The Hurt Locker,” Renner has been lining up a slate of prestigious and high-profile projects. He’ll next appear in Ben Affleck’s much buzzed about Boston drama “The Town,” followed by a stint as superhero Hawkeye in Joss Whedon’s “Avengers,” and then his role in “Mission: Impossible IV.” The production, directed by Bird, with Cruise and J.J. Abrams producing, is set to begin shooting this fall. Justin Bieber Gives Fans A Chance To Be In His 3-D Movie

Beliebers can upload a video of themselves singing ‘That Should Be Me’ to get in the film. By Kara Warner Justin Bieber Photo: Frederick Breedon/ Getty Images Attention Justin Bieber fans (you might want to sit down while reading this, if you haven’t already seen the news on Bieber’s Twitter account): You have an opportunity to be in his new 3-D movie! That’s right, Justin Bieber and director Jon Chu made the announcement via Twitter on Tuesday (August 24) that they are hosting a 24-hour casting call for all the Beliebers out there to be in their new concert extravaganza. All it takes is a visit to the website BieberFever.com/movie . According to the site, fans have an opportunity to “be a part” of the movie, which could mean any number of things, as the details in the announcement are few (we recommend a thorough perusal of Paramount Pictures’ “terms of use” statement for further explanation before submission). To be considered, fans must submit a home video of themselves singing along to Bieber’s “That Should Be Me” or they should “Show us how ‘U Smile’ ” by sending in a photo or video. When Chu and Bieber made the Twitter-nouncement on Tuesday afternoon, Bieber followed up his initial tweet with an update that fans had already overwhelmed the website’s server. “Sorry u guys crashed the server!!” he tweeted. “Haha. It’s back up now!! Get in MY MOVIE!!! U got less than 24 hours!!” When MTV News caught up with Chu recently (who also directed “Step-Up 3-D”), he said the Bieber movie will be for everyone — not just his devoted fans. “[It’s] a movie for his fans, a movie for people who don’t know him, and we’re gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from,” Chu said. “There’s not going to be acted-out scenes and I can’t talk about the rest. It’s not your typical concert film and it’s not going to be a biopic … but it is about his life. I think it’s more of a documentary. We’re going to figure it out as we go.” As for how much of it will be in 3-D, he said, “You’ll have to see it. We’re figuring that out now.” The Justin Bieber 3-D movie is set to open on Valentine’s Day weekend. Will you submit a video to be in Bieber’s movie? Let us know in the comments! ‘Mission: Impossible IV’ Casting Tom Cruise’s Co-Star

Anthony Mackie, Kevin Zegers and Christopher Egan reportedly auditioning with Cruise. By Eric Ditzian Tom Cruise Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Earlier in the summer, as Tom Cruise’s action comedy “Knight and Day” struggled at the domestic box office, there was open speculation about whether Paramount would move forward with a fourth installment of the Cruise-starring “Mission: Impossible” franchise. But “Knight and Day” has now passed the $220 million mark worldwide, thanks to hefty overseas business, and development on “M:I IV” is continuing apace. In the latest development, Deadline New York reports that Cruise and director Brad Bird are set to begin screen-testing actors this week to star opposite the A-lister. Three of the candidates are reportedly Anthony Mackie (“The Hurt Locker”), Kevin Zegers (“Frozen”) and Christopher Egan (“Letters to Juliet”). There remains ongoing speculation about the exact nature of Cruise’s role in the flick. As far back as June 2009, The Hollywood Reporter dished that Cruise might hand the starring role over to a younger actor, or even to an ensemble, potentially setting up a new generation of “M:I” films. Might that be the role for which Mackie, Zegers and Egan are auditioning? ” ‘Mission: Impossible’ is a brand,” an unnamed former studio chief told THR last year. “It didn’t have anything to do with Tom Cruise in the beginning.” Regardless of which actors join the franchise, Cruise has been adamant about his commitment to new creative blood. “My whole thing with the series is always having a new director come on and put their stamp on ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ” he told MTV News recently. “Brian De Palma was first, then John Woo, J.J. Abrams and now Brad Bird, so it will be Brad Bird’s ‘Mission: Impossible.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible IV.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
