What does it take to revive a passion for one’s work, years on, whether said vocation is saving the world or churning out sequels in a blockbuster franchise? How does one reclaim human contact in today’s isolating, gadget-dependent world? These are questions IMF agent Ethan Hunt and his portrayer Tom Cruise face in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol , Cruise’s fourth outing in the spy series, directed entertainingly enough by Pixar veteran Brad Bird . If the hoodied Cruise evokes a touch of Eminem-level moodiness in the posters, it’s with good reason: Stopping a maniacal supervillain may be on the docket yet again, but this time around Ethan Hunt has gone emo.
What keeps Tom Cruise relevant after 30 years in Hollywood? Take this hint from his Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird: “You look at the directors he’s worked with It’s a who’s who. Scorsese and Kubrick and Spielberg and Oliver Stone — when Oliver Stone was making better movies — and Michael Mann and Sydney Pollack and on and on and on. It’s kind of stunning. Not every one of them was a great movie, but he’s worked with great directors over and over again, and you can engage him in those conversations.” Or Paul Thomas Anderson. Or Ridley Scott. Or Brian De Palma. Or John Woo. Or Neil Jordan. Isn’t Quentin Tarantino hiring at the moment ? Let’s make that happen. [ LAT ]
Why would openly gay Andy Cohen — programming bigwig at Bravo and self-appointed talk show host — employ a raging homophobe like Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger? When Lil Wayne sold a million units of “Tha Carter III” in 2008, the number was impressive but not shocking. Weezy was on fire, and songs like “A Milli” and “Lollipop” made the album highly anticipated. The sales of CDs have been on a steady decline as digital music has gained popularity. As a result, many of music’s biggest stars have a hard time selling 1 million CDs during the promotional run of the project. So for anyone to sell that many copies in a week beyond huge. Lil Wayne’s follow up “Tha Carter IV” was released digitally after the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards aired on August 28th (the night he rocked leopard print jeggings), and it sold 362,000 copies. Plus, it broke iTunes’ record for the most album sales in a single week, dethroning Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Watch The Throne” after only three weeks. “Tha Carter IV” was forecast to sell about 850,000 digital and physical copies combined, but Lil Wayne beat that number easily by selling 964,000 in CDs alone, according to Billboard.com . (Digital and CD sales combined bring “Tha Carter IV” to over 1.3 million units sold in one week.) Did Lil Wayne actually sell that many copies? He’s not as hot now as he was when he sold 1.1 million copies of “Tha Carter III” in one week back in 2008. “How To Love” and “She Will” are number 7 and 17, respectively on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, but their buzz doesn’t match the heat “A Milli” and “Lollipop” generated. Did Cash Money Records, the label Lil Wayne’s signed to, purchase copies to boost the record sales so Weezy could have the bragging rights of selling over a million units in one week twice? Or did Weezy really do what seemed like the impossible? Cash Money CEO Birdman denies this rumor during an interview with Sway on his Shade 45 morning show by stating, “That’s hustling backwards; we ain’t in it for that.” We want to know what you think. Did Lil Wayne’s team help him by buying up copies of “Tha Carter IV” or not? Let us know what you think in the comments section below! Michelle Money has done the impossible. The former Bachelor cast member has not only improved her image significantly on this summer’s Bachelor Pad , she made a true personal connection on the show! Months after filming wrapped, Michelle Money and Graham Bunn, a Bachelorette cast member from DeAnna Pappas’ season, say they are closer than ever . “Graham and I talk multiple times a day,” Money said. “We both knew he was going back to New York and I’m going back to Utah, and we live different lives.” “We don’t live close to each other by any stretch of the imagination, so we knew it was like, ‘We’ll see what happens.’ But since then, we have grown closer.” Money says her relationship status with her Bachelor Pad costar is “not definable,” but she attracted to Graham Bunn “Right when he walked in the door.” “I was like, ‘Okay, this is going to be really fun,'” she says. “He’s got these eyes that just kill you right when you see him. It’s like, ‘Okay, I’m done!'” But for the single mother of daughter Brielle, the attraction extends beyond Bunn’s physical assets. She calls him “an incredible human being.” “He’s so much more than just beautiful on the outside. His heart is beautiful. His soul is beautiful. He’s just a really incredible guy all around.” When Michelle signed on for Bachelor Pad , it was only for the … well, Money. “My intention in going on the show was to win the money – end of story,” she says. “I never in a million years thought I would meet someone that I would want to continue seeing after the show was over. It was a really pleasant surprise.” This new Michelle Money may seem like a far cry from the woman who aggressively pursued Brad Womack on the last season of The Bachelor . “I went on The Bachelor to find love, and in order to find love in eight weeks, you have to really utilize your time with someone,” she says. “I took the approach of just taking advantage of every second, whereas on Bachelor Pad , there was no goal at the end to have a relationship.” Money also stands by her claim that she’s been a victim of editing. “I’m not any different than I was in The Bachelor, ” she swears. “They’re just choosing to show different sides of me [now]. There was a sweeter side of me on The Bachelor; they just never showed it.”
After scoring a critical and commercial hit with his directorial debut, 2009’s Zombieland , director Ruben Fleischer decided to make the relatively humble crime comedy 30 Minutes or Less (in theaters Friday) as his follow-up, rather than take on some huge Hollywood work-for-hire gig like Mission: Impossible 4 , which he was once in the running to direct. And as he tells Cinema Blend, when he watched the first trailer for the Brad Bird-helmed spy sequel, he knew he’d made the right decision.
Pixar watchers and action fans alike were waiting to see what Oscar-winning animation veteran Brad Bird might do with the reins to the Mission: Impossible franchise, and the first wave of promo materials offers an answer: Pretty much what anyone would do with a slick, globe-trotting, high-octane Tom Cruise vehicle. Can we find greater detail in the first batch of stills from Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol ?
“The president has initiated Ghost Protocol,” intones an über-serious Tom Wilkinson at the start of the trailer for Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol . “The entire IMF has been disavowed.” Yikes! What happens now, super agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise)? “So, what happens now?” Yes — just asked that question. Stop being difficult and just cue up some Eminem — the first trailer for the fourth Mission: Impossible film is live and online.
