According to the Phuket Gazette, Bourne Legacy star Jeremy Renner was maybe-sorta (okay not really) involved in an insane-sounding bar brawl this week in Thailand in which an associate was attacked and stabbed by a host of bar employees. Oh, I’m sorry: Bar employees wielding knives and a freaking homemade battle axe . But fear not! It seems Renner, most recently seen in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and currently in Thailand shooting his Bourne flick, hightailed it out and escaped unscathed . Wish we could say the same about his reported acquaintance, one Vorasit Issara, who took injuries to his stomach and neck in the melee. [ Phuket Gazette , ETonline ]
Odds are if you visited a movie theater recently, you might have been there to see Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol or War Horse. The former has been deservedly sitting atop the box office charts since its release and the latter is the latest, tear-jerker live-action drama from one of our most beloved filmmakers, Steven Spielberg. And while the fact they’re both currently playing in theaters is… Broadcasting platform : Vimeo Source : /Film Discovery Date : 01/01/2012 21:28 Number of articles : 2

‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ easily wins #1 spot over long holiday weekend. By Ryan J. Downey Tom Cruise in “Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: Paramount This Christmas, Tom Cruise was “impossible” to beat at the box office. “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” was the #1 movie over the long holiday weekend, easily beating competition from two competing sequels with an additional $46.2 million as it expanded into wide release. The fourth entry in the Tom Cruise franchise, this one directed by Brad Bird (“The Incredibles”), has racked up $78.6 million in domestic receipts since it debuted in limited release 11 days ago. “Ghost Protocol” is the best-reviewed entry in the franchise, which kicked off in 1996 with an inaugural film (based on the popular late ’60s TV series) directed by Brian De Palma (“Scarface”). Action maestro John Woo (“The Killer”) helmed “M:I 2” four years later. The J.J. Abrams-directed “Mission: Impossible III” grossed $134 million during its theatrical run in 2006. Meanwhile, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” was reviewed far less favorably than its 2009 predecessor. The film, which reunites Robert Downey Jr. in the title role with Jude Law as his faithful partner, Watson, was #2 at the box office with $31.8 million for a two-week total of $90.6 million. “Downey may think this interpretation is an insight, or funny, but it pushes what was already a rude rewriting of the classic characters into eye-rolling camp,” wrote the Newark Star Ledger. The first film sits at 70 percent on film review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes’ “Tomatometer,” while “Game of Shadows” was at a “rotten” 59 percent at press time. The #3 movie at the box office, itself the third in a series, continues a franchise-long tradition of poor reviews. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” carried a series worst 13 percent score on the “Tomatometer” as it collected $20 million for an 11-day $56.9 million total. Neither “Game of Shadows” nor “Shipwrecked” appear likely to get anywhere near the $200 million grosses of their predecessors. Four of the other five new releases in theaters were from major filmmakers. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” the highly anticipated American adaptation of the popular Swedish book from director David Fincher (“Fight Club”), has made $27.7 million since it opened Tuesday night. Steven Spielberg has two new movies out, “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse,” which landed at #5 and #7 on the box office chart, respectively. “Tintin” has made $24.1 million while “War Horse” has made $15 million. The latest from director Cameron Crowe opened even lower than his last movie, “Elizabethtown.” “We Bought a Zoo,” at #6, earned just $15.6 million despite star power in the form of Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. Rock journalist turned filmmaker Crowe has worked with box-office topper Tom Cruise twice: first with “Jerry Maguire” in 1996 and later with “Vanilla Sky” in 2001. Finally, alien invasion horror flick “The Darkest Hour” opened at #8 with just $5.5 million. The film was not screened in advance for critics, but The Hollywood Reporter, which reviewed the movie, blamed a “flatlining screenplay and the absence of even a single compelling character.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . We’ve been following Tom Cruise’s road back to the ‘M:I’ series, leading up to the film’s release Wednesday (December 21). By Kara Warner Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: Paramount After a five-year hiatus, Tom Cruise is back as superspy Ethan Hunt in “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” This is Cruise’s fourth foray into the world of fancy gadgetry, high-stakes missions and crazy action sequences, with “Incredibles” director Brad Bird at the helm of his first live-action film. To celebrate Cruise’s long and winding road back to Hunt and the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, here is everything you need to know about “Ghost Protocol,” which releases wide Wednesday (December 21). The Return of Ethan Hunt Although Cruise’s third “Mission” film was a bona fide box-office success following its $134 million gross in 2006, the green light for a fourth film was a long time coming. First, director J.J. Abrams confirmed that he would not be back to helm the film, though he would stay on as a producer, then in February 2010, Cruise announced he’d be back , and the hunt was on for a new director. New Blood In May 2010, Paramount announced that Pixar mastermind and director Brad Bird would take on the fourth “Mission” with Cruise , which was followed by casting announcements of new leading lady Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner and “Lost” alum Josh Holloway. Returning castmember Simon Pegg promised us that his character had an improved bag of tricks in the form of a “promotion” in IMF . We also soon learned the film’s proper title: “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” Cruise Defies Death, Scales World’s Tallest Building As soon as photos emerged of Cruise scaling Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, interest in the film picked up considerably. How can you ignore one of the world’s most famous film stars dangling from and then standing atop the world’s tallest building? You can’t. Bird told us that people wouldn’t believe that it was actually Cruise performing the “crazy” stunts and assured us that no CG was needed for those scenes. Amped-Up Action Once the first trailer arrived , we put it through our expert analysis , and it was obvious that once again, Cruise and Co. had upped the ante with regard to ridiculously complicated action sequences. Even Cruise’s wife, Katie Holmes, admitted Cruise’s stunts were “intense,” alongside Guillermo Del Toro, who provided the very excellent bonus trailer reaction by humming the theme song and comparing “Mission: Impossible” to his diet . All Systems Go As we got closer to the film’s release date, more trailers , posters and clips started rolling in. Then it was time for the press junket, which, incredibly enough, Paramount hosted in Dubai, from where two members of our intrepid MTV News team sent in daily reports of their experiences and interviews , the highlights from which include a Tom Cruise “After Hours,” Cruise revealing the most interesting and mundane facts about himself, and just how many more “Mission” films Cruise has in him. ‘Ghost Protocol’ star tells MTV News he’ll continue the series, ‘If I can make ’em at a level I want to make ’em.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz MTV News’ Josh Horowitz and Tom Cruise Photo: MTV News The last time we wanted to talk to Tom Cruise , we had to get on a plane, fly 12 hours across the Atlantic, and practically scale the 2,716-foot Burj Khalifa in Dubai . It was easier this time, as the New York City premiere for Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” took place at the Ziegfeld Theatre, just a few blocks away from MTV News’ Times Square headquarters. The Big Apple opening brought out an array of Hollywood talent in addition to Cruise: wife Katie Holmes, co-stars Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg, plus Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Queen Latifah, Robin Thicke, Jerry Ferrara and Adam Shankman. Oh, and a couple thousand fans screaming so loud for Cruise you’d have thought they were hanging by a shoelace from the top of the Burj Khalifa. In defense of these fans, it was freaking Tom Cruise they were cheering for, and it’s been more than five years since the last “Mission” film. And if he keeps delivering franchise installments the way he wants, these premieres might happen many more times in the future. “If I can make ’em at a level I want to make ’em,” Cruise told MTV News of continuing the series. “Thing is, I’ve never wanted to compromise. If we can figure that out, I love making them. As a producer, they’re a lot of fun. As an actor, they’re really a blast and challenging.” What it comes down to for Cruise is a deep love of the source material: the ’60s-era TV series starring Peter Graves, Martin Landau and others. “I just remember watching it at home on television. I loved the music and the whole thing with the gadgets and the team and the places they would go to. It was kind of a family event for us. When I went to Paramount the first time to produce it, they weren’t really turning TV series into movies, but I was pretty excited about it. To be today at number four is pretty cool.” Are you excited for the latest “Mission” movie? Tell us in the comments!
