According to NY Daily News The eldest son of Zimbabwe’s First Lady has been fined $800 after being convicted of manslaughter. Russell Goreraza, the stepson of long-time leader Robert Mugabe, knocked down and killed a man in Harare, the country’s capital, reports the BBC . The judge said he had decided against jailing the 31-year-old — and taking away his license — because of the defendant’s remorse. Goreraza was also a first-time offender. “I regret and want to apologise for the incident,” he said in court. The BBC claims the lenient sentence has shocked many in Zimbabwe. San Antonio Snacker Finds Cocaine Bag Inside Her Granola Bar Via KENS5 The San Antonio Police Department has confirmed narcotics detectives are investigating how a small bag of cocaine ended up inside the wrapper of a granola bar eaten by a local woman. “It’s a somewhat disturbing case,” Sgt. Javier Salazar told KENS 5 Wednesday. “You think of a child getting a hold of a package that’s got interesting symbols on it, dollar signs in this case, and ingesting something like cocaine that could have a possibly dangerous effect, maybe even deadly on a child,” added Salazar. Cynthia Rodriguez reported the incident to SAPD March 18, after the bag of cocaine fell from the wrapper of a Nature Valley granola bar. Rodriguez said she originally thought she won a prize. She called Nature Valley and a company representative told her to report the incident to her local police department. Rodriguez said an officer and a detective first tested the substance to see if it was heroin. The detective then tested it for cocaine. “He tried for cocaine and they both looked at each other and he goes ‘oh my goodness, its high quality cocaine,’” said Rodriguez. Student Suspended From University Of South Carolina Over Racist Snapchat Her parents must be so proud. Via WISTV reports: A student at the University of South Carolina has been suspended after a photo of the student who appeared to be writing a racial slur went viral Friday. The photo, which appears to be taken from Snapchat and posted on several social media sites, shows a list of reasons why “USC’s WiFi blows.” On the top of that list is the N-word. The University of South Carolina said it actually took place inside a study room. President Harris Pastides said the student was suspended Friday and a code of conduct investigation has begun. The course of action endorsed was also endorsed by the Board of Trustees, Pastides said. “The unfortunate and disappointing act of a student in a study room has challenged the Carolina community to reflect on our values and tell the world what we believe,” Pastides said in a statement. “Respect for all is at the heart of the Carolinian Creed, the code by which we agree to abide. Racist and uncivil rhetoric have no place at the University of South Carolina.” The student, who was not named, could also face expulsion. Following the incident the NAACP released the following statement: “A recent tweet that shows a student at the University of South Carolina listing the N-word as one of her grievances against the institution brings to mind a famous quote attributed to the French writer Alfonse Karr, “the more things change, the more they remain the same”. Such negative attitudes have existed since the first European explorers visited the land we now call America. It is disappointing but no longer shocking to see a college student following what appears to be a growing trend in our state and nation. Scenes such as this while captured in still shots from time to time through social media, sadly reflect what people of color often experience in many communities. In the midst of the positive portrayal of University of South Carolina students over the past several weeks, we once again face a stark reality: even at our highest points as a society there are those among us – including the young – who wish they were still in Dixie. Another Racist Incident For Duke University, Noose Found On Campus Racial tensions continue to rise on the campus of Duke University . The second incident in just a few weeks has students rattled. According to Duke Chronicle reports : A noose was discovered hanging from a tree on the Bryan Center Plaza early Wednesday morning. Reports on social media showed a photo of the noose, made with a thin yellow rope, with several students linking the incident to racially charged motivations. The noose was removed from the tree prior to 2:45 a.m. Wednesday. Two police officers were on the scene speaking to a group of several concerned students shortly after reports surfaced online. The incident comes approximately two weeks after students allegedly chanted a racist song at a black female student, which prompted President Richard Brodhead and Provost Sally Kornbluth to send an email to the student body affirming Duke’s commitment to racial equality. The Duke University Police Department deferred comment until the morning. The Duke People of Color Caucus, an anonymous group that emerged following the alleged chanting, released the following statement on Tumblr along with a photo of the noose: To all black students, staff, faculty, and/or Durhamites on campus and in the area: Please take care of yourselves and each other. This campus is not a safe space, and has proven beyond any doubt that it is a hostile environment for any and all black people. One reblogger of the post commented, “I don’t feel safe on my own campus.” Damn can you blame them? NY Daily News published part of a statement from the University on the incident: The thin, yellow rope was cut down around 2:45 a.m., Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta said in an email to students Wednesday, according to WRAL. “To whomever committed this hateful and stupid act, I just want to say that if your intent was to create fear, it will have the opposite effect,” Moneta wrote. The North Carolina university is investigating, he said. Via Click Orlando reports: Orange County deputies arrested a man after they say he exposed himself to a Wendy’s drive-thru worker on Friday morning. Nicholas Garrison, 23, has been charged with exposure of sexual organs in the incident at the Wendy’s on Central Florida Parkway. Deputies said Garrison drove up to the window and ordered a glass of water at 1 a.m. Friday and when the worker opened the window, Garrison was touching himself inappropriately. The workers took pictures and video of the incident and called 911, according to the report. Garrison was arrested on by deputies and booked into Orange County Jail. Former University Of Mississippi Student Indicted For Hanging Noose On James Meredith Statue The DOJ has brought civil rights charges against Graeme Phillip Harris for hanging a noose and confederate flag on a statue of the Ole Miss ‘first black student. Additionally members of Sigma Phi Epsilon are believed to have played a part in the incident. NBC News reports: A former University of Mississippi student was indicted Friday on federal civil rights charges for allegedly hanging a rope and a flag featuring the Confederate battle flag around the neck of a statue of James Meredith, the university’s first black student. Graeme Phillip Harris was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of conspiracy to violate civil rights and using a threat of force to intimidate African American students because of their race or color, the Department of Justice said. The rope and an old version of the Georgia state flag, which displays the crossed bars and stars used as a battle flag by the South during the Civil War, was placed around the neck of the statue in the early morning hours of Feb. 16, 2014. Meredith was the first black student after the university was desegregated in 1962. “This shameful and ignorant act is an insult to all Americans and a violation of our most strongly-held values,” U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement. “No one should ever be made to feel threatened or intimidated because of what they look like or who they are.” A spokesman for the university said Harris withdrew from Ole Miss in the spring of 2014, not long after the incident. There were others involved, the Department of Justice said. Three members of the University of Mississippi Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter were thought to have hanged the rope and flag around the statue. They have never been named, but the national fraternity suspended the chapter and expelled the three members from the organization a week after the incident. Sigma Phi Epsilon CEO Brian C. Back in January, Suge Knight killed a man in an alleged hit and run. Knight was arrested for murder and is currently locked up while awaiting trial. There were several witnesses to the incident, but conflicting testimony has made it unclear whether Suge was attacked (as he claims), or if the hip hop mogul simply ran over and killed Terry Carter as a result of his famously violent temper. Now, TMZ has obtained footage of the incident, but the issue of what really happened that day is still being disputed. Prosecutors are reportedly arguing that the clip supports their claim that Suge ran over Carter unprovoked. It’s unclear from the video what actually went down, but it does seem to show Sloane holding a weapon.
