Should ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Take Cues From ‘Hunger Games’?

Batman and Katniss duke it out to be champion of the 2012 box office, in The Weekly Rising. By Kevin P. Sullivan Tom Hardy in “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. What is going on with “The Dark Knight Rises” and its lack of a marketing campaign? We’re four months out from what is supposed to be the biggest movie of the year, but all we have to show for it are two trailers and new theater standees . This past weekend’s box-office domination of Jennifer Lawrence and “The Hunger Games” stands as a testament to the power of a strong marketing campaign when you have a rabid fanbase helping to carry the load. Warner Bros. has so far taken an entirely different route when it comes to promoting the final film of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. It’s no secret that “The Dark Knight Rises” is coming out and that everyone wants to see it. The mania around “The Dark Knight” established a subculture of raspy-voiced Batman parodies and every male teen attempting Heath Ledger’s Joker makeup and ensured a huge box-office take for the eventual third film. But with so much of the movie industry now focused on “The Hunger Games” and its “bigger than we could have imagined” success, can “The Dark Knight Rises” afford to coast into theaters in July without a similarly mega-huge marketing campaign? And how high can a big-budget movie like “The Dark Knight Rises” fly without the increasingly common deluge of marketing? Box-office experts weighing in on the success of “The Hunger Games” give credit to the balance of a hard marketing push and dedicated fanbase. Lionsgate got the word out early and often that “The Hunger Games” was a phenomenon that wouldn’t and couldn’t be missed. For the most part, the campaign fit the property. The three best-selling books had a huge following, but Katniss Everdeen wasn’t exactly a household name heading into last weekend. If a 30-year-old guy didn’t know the Suzanne Collins novels, the commercials could have been enough to entice him. The approach to marketing “The Dark Knight Rises” should be different. No one needs to be told who Batman is. Everyone and their English butler went to go see “The Dark Knight” in 2008 and would probably be interested in seeing a third film. But what’s new? Fans can look forward to Bane, Catwoman and the Batwing, but there isn’t a news hook like Ledger’s death that makes it something more than the next big movie to see. When the returns from “The Hunger Games” rose and rose and crept ever closer to the record previously held by “The Dark Knight,” there may have been a slight panic from Batman fans. What if 2012 has already seen its biggest weekend at the box office and Katniss Everdeen has already been crowned the champion? It would be ignorant to suggest that “The Dark Knight Rises” can’t succeed without an all-encompassing viral marketing campaign and commercials airing every other minute, but what “The Hunger Games” may have proven is that without those elements, Batman might have to settle for second place. Hot Women Pandering to Nerds: The Supercut [VIDEO]

Produced by Oliver Noble over at the FilmDrunk blog, this video lays out the increasingly popular phenomenon Skin Central likes to call “Munning”: the marketing of a hot actress as a “nerd” in an attempt to appeal to the geeky guy demographic. Now, we don’t know Olivia Munn personally, so we can’t say if her Star Wars love is real or not, but it’s certainly skinteresting to see them all side by side: So what’s your take on this phenomenon? Think these girls are faking the fandom or are they really devoted dorks? More importantly, does it put the plasma in your lightsaber or leave you as cold as the snow drifts of Hoth? Let us know in the comments!

Amber Tamblyn on Playing House with Hugh Laurie, Complex Roles and Her Favorite ‘Crazy Girl’ Film Moment

In the last year, Amber Tamblyn has turned over her detective badge from ABC’ s under-appreciated The Unusuals , inserted a welcome dose of estrogen into Danny Boyle’s limb-sawing film 127 Hours , co-starred with her boyfriend David Cross in the IFC series The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret and released a book of poetry . As if that weren’t enough, the Santa Monica-born actress is also practicing medicine on House , the Fox series where Tamblyn has declared residency for a 13-episode arc.

50 Cent Gives Up Twitter To Work On Album

MC says he won’t tweet until September 6 to work on The Return of the Heartless Monster. By Mawuse Ziegbe 50 Cent Photo: MTV News 50 Cent’s Twitter followers are going to have to find other ways to amuse themselves this weekend. The MC says he’s giving up tweeting to pen his next effort, The Return of the Heartless Monster. “Ok ladies and [gentlemen] I’m writing my new album. I will not be on twitter again till Sept 6,” Fif wrote Wednesday (September 1). “This album will be a classic,” added the MC, who announced the album title on Twitter . 50 has been putting in work on his new material. Swizz Beatz recently told MTV News that he has been in the studio with the G-Unit boss, after 50 reportedly shelved much of the dance-music-friendly sound he originally envisioned for his upcoming music. While the arrival of Kanye West and his multifaceted musings on the micro-blogging website has sparked major fanfare from fans and the media, 50’s missives have ramped up in both frequency and ridiculousness over the past few weeks. Some days, Fif has been introspective and candid, sharing the inner-workings of his subconscious with followers. “Just woke up I had a dream I put stars On my head like baby [of Cash Money]. then I was at church they told me take my hat off I said I just wanta pray lol,” 50 typed Sunday. “That’$ crazy why wa$ baby on my mind. oh I wa$ looking at old xxl magazine$ la$t night. anyway$hout out to baby I know that [hurt].” Other times, the Queens MC has added his voice to the public discourse about the state of the economy, and even doled out advice to our increasingly embattled president. “Obamas ratings are down cause he didn’t include pimpin and hoein in stimulus package. Good hoes would boost male moral and fix the recession,” 50 asserted Saturday. The “Baby by Me” rapper later added, “Sh– I should run america. first thing I’d do is cut my taxes then tell yal chill the f— out ima get to the rest of the problems. You know me and george bush was born on the same day july6. Speaking of birthdays everybody on twitter should send me just 1 dollar cool?” The Before I Self Destruct rapper has even mused about his tough childhood. “My aunt sylvia didnt like me growin up cause she was the baby till I came,” 50 also wrote Saturday. “We had roaches so she put roach spray in a bowl and kill my dog.” Of course, it wouldn’t be 50’s Twitter page if he didn’t take a swipe at the competition. “I just looked at kanye page what the f— kind a spaced out tweets are those,” the MC typed earlier in the day. “F— that I aint never looking at that sh– again.” Although 50 has built an empire on his super-tough persona, the MC has conceded that his words may be a wee bit harsh for his Twitter fans. “Look man I’m sorry I’ve been cursing,” 50 said. “But f— that sh– I gotta express myself, bitch.” Will you miss 50 on Twitter? Former Bush campaign manager Ken Mehlman finally comes out – Republican Party – Salon.com

Former head of the Republican National Committee and Bush '04 campaign manager Ken Mehlman has finally come out as a gay man. Mehlman broke the “news” to The Atlantic's Mark Ambinder. Everyone in politics basically suspected/”knew” this for years, but Mehlman says he only came to grips with it personally this year. “Mehlman's leadership positions in the GOP came at a time when the party was stepping up its anti-gay activities,” Ambinder writes, and boy howdy. But Mehlman has decided to become an open advocate for gay marriage, and the moderation of the GOP on gay issues. He participated in a fundraiser for the American Foundation for Equal Rights — a group supporting the legal challenge to Proposition 8 in California — last September, and he “has become a de facto strategist for the group,” attracting major Republican donors. “It's taken me 43 years to get comfortable with this part of my life,” Mehlman tells Ambinder. Plus he recently moved: Mehlman said that his formal coming-out process began earlier this year. Over the past several weeks, he has notified former colleagues, including former President Bush. Once he realized that the news would probably leak, he assembled a team of former advisers to help him figure out the best way to harness the publicity generated by the disclosure for the cause of marriage rights. He is worried that some will see his decision to go public as opportunistic. Mehlman recently moved to Chelsea, a gay mecca in New York City. Hm. Well, welcome to being on the right side of one issue, Ken. (And this marks another one that Mike Rogers was right about.) added by: toyotabedzrock

Could self-aware cities be the first forms of artificial intelligence?

The cities of the future will be huge and super-dense — but will they also be alive? Could the increasingly complex systems needed to manage the next generation of megacities become our first true artificial intelligence? People have speculated before about the idea that the Internet might become self-aware and turn into the first “real” A.I., but could it be more likely to happen to cities, in which humans actually live and work and navigate, generating an even more chaotic system? http://io9.com/5619183/could-self+aware-cities-be-the-first-forms-of-artificial-… added by: unimatrix0
