‘Hollywood Exes’ Is A ‘Relatable Show,’ Stars Say

‘The exes were the common denominator but not the show; they wanted to focus on us,’ Will Smith’s first wife, Sheree Fletcher, tells MTV News. By Kara Warner “Hollywood Exes” stars Mayte Garcia and Sheree Fletcher Photo: The stars of VH1’s “Hollywood Exes,” premiering tonight (June 27), knew they’d have to stand out from the pack of reality shows — and stand out they do. The show revolves around Nicole Murphy, Sheree Fletcher, Jessica Canseco, Andrea Kelly and Mayte Garcia. Their initial ground for group bonding is the fact that they all have famous ex-husbands. When MTV News caught up with three of the five lovely ladies, we asked what made them agree to let cameras into their personal lives. “The reason I decided to do the show was, first of all, the castmembers, the women,” said Garcia, who was married to Prince. “The idea that was pitched to me was it being about us. Yes, we were married to them, but we’re all individuals. I’m an artist, she’s an artist, she has a business. It’s about showing who we are, so I decided to do it. Especially after meeting [the show’s creators], I knew it was going to be good. I’m old enough now to trust my gut.” “I loved the vision of the creators,” added Fletcher, who was Will Smith’s first wife. “I loved their concept, like a sorority of sorts, women coming together with similar experiences, and that was kind of the common denominator. The exes were the common denominator but not the show; they wanted to focus on us. They wanted to see us in our many facets of life, be it moms or businesswomen or artists, what have you, and life after divorce. It’s got a lot of different dynamics, and I think it’s a very relatable show.” The ladies promised that the audience will get to see them go through good times and challenging times, and no matter what impression you may have had about them beforehand, they’ll win you over with their independent spirits, business savvy and strength. Watch “Hollywood Exes” Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on VH1.

On the Heels of Veep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus Catches the Indie Bug with Paris

Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus debuted her new HBO series Veep over the weekend, and she — along with husband/director Brad Hall — appears eager to add independent filmmaking to her repertoire. The pair hit the Tribeca Film Festival with their new short Picture Paris , teasing the project at an Apple Store event and hinting that this will not be their last foray into the indie space. Starring Dreyfus, the film follows a woman with an extraordinary obsession with Paris and a surprising past. “It was a way to dip our toes into the independent film world,” Dreyfus said at the event co-hosted by Indiewire. “It was like being in our old theater days, so we called in favors from friends and it was a great experience.” “The short is based on true life,” Hall added. “We had a kid heading off to college and it’s a major life-changing event. So I wrote a script by chance and I showed it to Julia. It has a good amount of twists and turns, and Julia said, ‘maybe we should just make it.'” Hall and Dreyfus are used to working together, but noted that this project allowed them to call the shots, which they are hoping to replicate on a future feature. “I’ve written other shorts about Paris,” Hall said, “but then we realized that we can’t really recoup our money making shorts, so we are going to do an independent feature, but keep the same group together.” Hall also contributed a complimentary gush about the French capital where they shot their short over six days, calling it “the Buenos Aires of Europe.” As for Veep , Dreyfus apologized for the onslaught of posters around New York City at the moment promoting the new HBO comedy in which she plays a fictional vice president of the United States. She said the show’s tagline is that the “buck stops somewhere near here,” but noted also that it is decidedly non-partisan. “This is a show about political behavior,” she said. “You’ll never see the actual president, and you’ll never know which party I belong to.” Read all of Movieline’s Tribeca 2012 coverage here .

Daniel Radcliffe’s Next Role Is Poet Allen Ginsberg

‘I’m hoping to make this year just about film, film, film,’ ‘Woman in Black’ star tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe While we are still anxiously awaiting the release of “The Woman in Black,” Daniel Radcliffe ‘s first big post-“Harry Potter” film, it’s never too early to start thinking about what other projects the young superstar will be considering after “Black” opens. When MTV News caught up with Radcliffe recently, we asked him to give us some clues as to what we might expect from him in the next year, specifically whether he’d officially signed on to a new film following the release of “Black.” “Closer and getting closer every day, but not anything confirmed yet, unfortunately,” Radcliffe said of his 2012 working schedule and several film roles he’s considering. “Hopefully I’ll definitely have three weeks off in February and then shortly after that, I would hopefully be making a film and it would hopefully be over here,” he said of his wishes to continue working Stateside, following his run on Broadway in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” “That would be an entirely new experience for me; I’ve never filmed in America. I’d really like to do that, with an American crew and have that experience,” he said. “I’m hoping to make this year just about film, film, film and then maybe get back onstage maybe in the next two years.” While he was cagey about exactly which films he’s considering, one Radcliffe role MTV News can now confirm is poet Allen Ginsberg in the independent film “Kill Your Darlings,” which is about how Ginsberg and fellow Beat Generation icons Jack Kerouac and Lucien Carr first met. “It’s one of the things that’s on the table absolutely. It would be amazing and I’m very, very enthused for that script and that young director,” he said of the John Krokidas-helmed project, which is also set to star Elizabeth Olsen, who recently raved about Radcliffe’s talent and her excitement to work with him in “Darlings.” “It’s an independent film, it’s welcome to the world of independent film — from one day to the next it could happen or not happen. Until I’m there on the set, I’m not going to say anything about it.” Would Daniel Radcliffe do well in the role of Allen Ginsberg? Tell us what you think in the comments! REVIEW: If You’ve Seen One Demonic-Possession Movie and It’s The Devil Inside, You’ve Seen Them All

The characters who manned the cameras in  The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield weren’t pros, providing an excuse for the shakiness and dizzy-making whip pans. Michael (Ionut Grama), the guy who’s supposed to be shooting the faux documentary  The Devil Inside,  is a filmmaker, so the fact that he can’t seem to keep anything in focus and frames shots so awkwardly is bewildering. Does this guy actually have a faux filmography, or is this his faux debut? And why does he mount cameras in multiple locations around his subject Isabella Rossi’s (Fernanda Andrade) car when he’s always with her anyway — does he imagine himself the Abbas Kiarostami of exorcism exposés? There’s a lot of downtime in which to consider issues like this in  The Devil Inside , a film co-written and directed by William Brent Bell ( Stay Alive ) that obviously aims for the same lower-budget found footage niche as the Paranormal Activity franchise. Like those films,  The Devil Inside ‘s most substantive aspect is its marketing — I cowered at its trailer whenever it ran before various holiday season offerings, and the poster highlights a shot from one of the two genuinely creepy possession sequences, featuring Suzan Crowley showing off the upside down cross carved on the inside of her lip. But the reality of  The Devil Inside is that it’s a half-hearted patchwork of ideas blatantly lifted from better films, with characters who have to act increasingly foolish in order to allow the action to go forward and an ending so anticlimactic and abrupt that the audience at the screening I attended erupted in enraged boos as the credits rolled. Crowley plays Maria Rossi, a housewife and the mother of Isabella, who one night in 1989 killed the nun and two priests who were attempted to exorcise the demons within her. Judged insane, she was transferred to a mental hospital in Rome, though the oddness of this (is that covered by her health insurance?) never seems to occur to Isabella, who’s grown up into a pretty twentysomething when she agrees to be the subject of Michael’s documentary. The two travel to Italy, where Isabella plans to visit her mother for the first time while also exploring the Vatican’s exorcism school, portrayed as a kind of Catholic Hogwarts with classes into which you can wander. At one of these lectures she meets priests Ben (Simon Quarterman) and David (Evan Helmuth), a pair of vigilante ordained exorcists (totally) who take an interest in her case. Isabella’s initial encounter with her mother at the hospital and the exorcism to which Ben and David later take her are both effective within  The Devil Inside ‘s low-budget parameters, thanks to the performers. Crowley, disheveled and bug-eyed, presents an uneasy combination of drugged-up dissociation and ominous flashes of lucidity, and the film’s switching between cameras makes the situation more unpredictable. The second sequence, in which the two priests attempt to cleanse a possessed girl named Rosa (Bonnie Morgan), has the benefit of contortionist Bonnie Morgan, who knots her body into wince-inducing shapes that would seem to require supernatural aid to maintain, then spits and screams and bleeds from her crotch. Neither offers anything new — if you’ve seen one demonic-possession movie and it’s  The Devil Inside , then you’ve seen them all, because it borrows liberally from every one of them. But both show more signs of focus than the rest of the film, which relies on meandering interviews and to-camera confessionals to pad out what little action there is to be had. And while this is a hardly a feature intended to be held up to close scrutiny, each subsequent twist the latter half takes is ever more laughable — why is a man allowed to just walk away after almost committing infanticide? Why do these characters who are obsessed with possession, who live and breathe it, not notice that it’s taking place under their own roof? Does it end the way it does because the filmmakers simply ran out of ideas, or did they become as fed up with these characters as we have? The found footage/fake documentary approach has plenty of benefits for the horror genre: It doesn’t require stars, it offers workaround for lower budgets and limited effects capabilities and it’s supposed to look a little cruddy. But good films in this subgenre have great concepts and demonstrate ingenuity in terms of filmmaking.  The Devil Inside just comes across as lazy and unnecessarily serious given how silly it becomes — if it had just a touch of lightness, at least it’d feel like we were laughing with it instead of at it.

Steven Soderbergh: ‘It’s Always Good to Kill Movie Stars’

Anyone who’s seen Contagion (or, let’s be honest, even just the trailer for Contagion ) knows that Steven Soderbergh is not precious about keeping his biggest stars breathing for the duration of his films. And when you think about it, that is kind of an awesome against-the-tide trend that few directors — okay, few studios — have the wherewithal to attempt. Chatting with the UK’s Independent about Contagion and Haywire , Soderbergh dropped some science on the art of manipulating the very essence of stardom in movies to great effect. “It’s always good to kill movie stars,” he told the Independent. “I think that the two most important things that have happened to that aspect of movies in the last 50 years are Hitchcock killing off Janet Leigh in a way that nobody had ever dreamed of doing – taking his heroine and killing her off after 40 minutes – and… Mike Nichols casting Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate . That changed everything.” “Now it’s back to the way it was before that single decision totally turned the world upside down in terms of what was people’s idea of a movie star. That one stroke ushered in the great actors who followed, De Niro, Pacino and Nicholson.” So how does one shake up audience expectation again in movies chock-full of A-listers? [ Spoilers ] Have them pummeled to a pulp by unknown MMA fighter-ladies! Cut their brains open in the first act! Blame it all on chickens! [ End spoilers ] All hail Soderbergh! Kill your idols! (Figuratively speaking.) [ The Independent via Movie City News ]

The Only Matthew Lillard Interview You’ll Ever Need

“Nobody makes a Scooby-Doo 2 and goes, ‘Oh, we’re going to make a…’ And I don’t think Scooby-Doo 2 is a bad movie; I think Scooby-Doo 2 is exactly what it’s supposed to be for exactly the audience. It’s just that people who are tastemakers are like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to deal with the kid who was in that movie.’ Now, I’m the same guy who was in SLC Punk and I’m the same guy who was in Dead Man’s Curve and every other independent movie in the world. But, you know, it’s just that thing where it’s like somehow, someway, you get kind of labeled this guy who was in a Freddie Prinze Jr. movie too many. And Freddie Prinze Jr. — it’s not his fault, either — it’s just these are the things that happen.” [ Moviefone ]
