In a statement to FOX Business , the drugstore chain said that it started selling CBD products–or products with cannabidiol–which is the non-psychoactive component of marijuana, last week in select states across the country. Curaleaf Holdings Inc. has announced that CVS is going to sell its CBD products in roughly 800 locations upon launch, per MarketWatch’s report on a Curaleaf earnings conference call held on Wednesday. CVS currently stands as the biggest drugstore chain in the entire nation, so this move is a huge step in the latest coup for cannabis commerce at large. “We have partnered with CBD product manufacturers that are complying with applicable laws and that meet CVS’s high standards for quality,” a company representative said about the announcement, adding that “as of last week” CBD products including creams and lotions were already being sold at locations in eight different states. More than 800 stores in Alabama, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, and Tennessee will now offer CBD products as part of a distribution deal with Canadian marijuana company Curaleaf Holdings Inc. Cannabis is currently legal for medicinal use in 33 states and D.C., with 10 states boasting the full-blown recreational legalization distinction. As a result, the legal weed industry bagged a whopping $10.4 billion in 2018 alone. CBD is not really what anyone is looking for in terms of a achieving a recreational high, but for some reason, it is still a source of mild controversy for some. Outgoing Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Scott Gottlieb predicted earlier this month that without some sort of action at the congressional level, the development of agency rules and regulations on the use of hemp-extracted cannabidiol in food could take years. CBD has been getting a lot of publicity from people suffering from certain mental health issues, with claims that it helps ease anxiety and other conditions. The product recently received a raving public testimonial from Lamar Odom , who partially credits it with saving his life. “It’s a perfect time to offer these cannabis solutions to the public who may be going through similar body issues as I am,” Odom told The Blast last year. Following the news of CVS’ new product addition, CEO Larry Merlo said on CNBC that the move was prompted by its customers, who have used CBD products in the past and said it helped with pain relief for arthritis and other ailments. New York City just released their new anti-hair discrimination guidelines that will prohibit schools and employers from denying opportunities to others based on the style of their hair. This is a monumental moment for people of color everywhere who’ve lived in fear that their natural hair had to be altered to fit in a professional setting. The very powerful guideline accurately depicts the experience most people of color have and how they’re experienced in the world. The legal guidance begins with, “ Anti-Black racism is an invidious and persistent form of discrimination across the nation and in New York City. Anti-Black racism can be explicit and implicit, individual and structural, and it can manifest through entrenched stereotypes and biases, conscious and unconscious. Anti-Black bias also includes discrimination based on characteristics and cultural practices associated with being Black, including prohibitions on natural hair or hairstyles most closely associated with Black people. 1 Bans or restrictions on natural hair or hairstyles associated with Black people are often rooted in white standards of appearance and perpetuate racist stereotypes that Black hairstyles are unprofessional. Such policies exacerbate anti-Black bias in employment, at school, while playing sports, and in other areas of daily living .” While it is sad that we live in a time where something like this has to be put into place, I am thankful that it happened. Over the last couple of years we’ve watched school children be refused from attending school, participating in special sports activities and people being told that they’d have to change their hair to complete their work. This kind of behavior teaches children that there is something wrong with their natural hair. We want to change the narrative from self-hate to self-love. Now, cases of discrimination can be met with legal action if they refuse someone’s rights or privilege because of their hair style. These small victories remind me of what it may have felt like when people of color slowly earned normalized rights like co-existing in the same space as a white person. In 2019, we are still fighting to have the same privilege as our white counterparts. Kudos to New York City for taking a stand for us but what about the rest of America? There are countless cases about people of color being fired from work or discriminated against in school because of their hairstyles. Just last April, a black woman was let go from her job because she refused to cut her loccs. When she took the employer to court, she learned that federal law protects people from discrimination based on immutable characteristics, but not their cultural practices, thus losing her case. New York may have won this battle, but we’re still fighting the war for equality. Jessie Woo leads the charge by talking to Trina about all the BS she has had to deal with in the industry. She comes to tears as she talks about how a popular producer raped her. Trina comforts her and is inspired to meet up with Tarana Burke after hearing Jessie’s story. Mind you, this is the first step toward taking hip-hop to task when it comes to sexual violence because the #MeToo Movement hasn’t caught on in the music space yet. Trina’s theory is that people are more afraid to burn bridges in hip-hop, which could true. It’s either that or, people just don’t want to come to terms with some of the misogynistic lyrics and real-life behavior they’re complicit in. I digress. The meeting resulted in Tarana interviewing Trina as a correspondent for Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Red Table Talk . They discuss Trina’s career, her unapologetic nature, her brother’s death and more. Tarana is also having another event in Miami related to the #MeToo Movement and Trina is invited. Hold that thought. Meanwhile, Joy finds out that if she stays in her marriage then she would be contractually obligated to pay Trick half of everything she makes due to his financial problems. So basically, she can’t start any businesses or really move forward right now. She knows she can’t count on Trick to come up with the money for the divorce ($50,000 or maybe even more), so she has a car wash fundraiser to make it happen. Trick crashes that fundraiser acts like a manbaby and tries to sabotage her. He gives her a condescending $40 before leaving but it doesn’t matter because she’s distraught. Then Trina comes through with her calming energy and asks her why she didn’t just ask her for the money. Joy doesn’t think it’s fair for that to be on Trina, but Trina blessed her cousin anyway. She gives her a check for an undisclosed amount and refuses to let Joy refuse it. Joy is finally going to get her divorce. The next moment is at Gunplay’s listening party. This is where Amara finally gets to talk to Keyara about the whole sliding in Gunplay’s DM’s situation. Mind you, Keyara and Gunplay are broken up now, but Keyara still feels some type of way. In short, they keep it classy. Keyara says she went through Gunplay’s phone and found what she was looking for. She said she saw Amara asking Gunplay out and flirting with him with emojis. Amara says she has no interest in Gunplay and that she’s naturally friendly and bubbly so the perceived flirting was misconstrued. She also said she wasn’t trying to kick it to him. She was actually trying to network since they’re both artists. It seems believable. Keyara buys it and she and Armara agree to let bygones be bygones. Look at them being mature! Finally, Tarana Burke invited some of the women to a panel she’s doing at Center for social Change discussing how she founded #Meetoo and healing from sexual violence. Trina, Jessie, and Chinese Kitty show up to support. Jessie breaks down in tears again thinking about what happened to her and the women in the room support her. She tells her story again but also explains how she’s bitter that the person who raped her is living an abundant life and doesn’t feel free when that person doesn’t seem to be facing any type of punishment. Then Chinese Kitty shares her story about being drugged, raped and thrown on the side of the road and just when you’re thinking that everyone is trash, Tarana steps up with her warm spirit and comforts them. She offers powerful words about finding and embracing the joy they already have in their lives in order to move forward. In recent weeks, Wendy Williams has been struggling with health issues that have prevented her from filming new episodes of her famously trashy talk show. Steve Harvey longs for a future in which you could channel surf for hours and see nothing but Steve Harvey with maybe the occasional glimpse of Kenan Thompson doing a Steve Harvey impression thrown in for variety. What do these two facts have to do with one another? Well, if a new report from Radar Online is to be believed, Wendy and Steve are embroiled in some sort of Shakespearean intrigue, and the media personality who emerges victorious will enjoy the coveted title of King or Queen of Syndicated Daytime Television. A source tells the site that producers are desperate for someone to fill in for Wendy while she’s on leave — and Steve believes he’s just the man for the job. “Wendy’s fans are very particular. They didn’t take well to Don Lemon when he stepped in. He lasted just one week,” a production insider tells the site. “It would take a very particular personality to step into Wendy’s shoes,” the insider adds. “The Fox guys see Steve as a big enough name, and word in the industry is the way he’s been treated by NBC, he feels they don’t deserve him.” That last comment refers to Harvey’s feeling that his current bosses are edging him out in favor of daytime newcomer Kelly Clarkson. NBC has apparently given coveted timeslots to Clarkson in several major markets, a fact that Harvey is clearly not thrilled with. As host of roughly 47 shows, Harvey obviously isn’t hurting for money, but those who know the host best say he has a competitive streak that cannot be contained. “Steve is all about one thing — winning,” says the insider. “He’s not going to let Kelly come out of nowhere, steal his time slot and get an easy ride.” Harvey reportedly feels a partnership with Fox will take him back to the top, and sees Williams’ show as an easy way to get his foot in the door. “If he goes back to a show run by a big network, they will pump lots of money into it — and he thinks it will get him back on top of the TV ratings,” the insider says. Unfortunately, for Harvey, Williams and Clarkson are not his only competition. Producers on Williams’ show are reportedly favoring Nick Cannon as a younger, hipper option. Back in 2016, Kesha alleged that she had been raped by Dr. Luke, an A-list music producer who has worked with just about every big name in pop over the course of his career. The allegations never resulted in any criminal charges, but Kesha’s lawsuit against Luke and his subsequent countersuit have led to countless headlines and many hours of sworn testimony. At least two of Luke’s other high-profile collaborators have provided depositions thus far. Back in November, testimony from Katy Perry revealed that while she sympathized with Kesha, she denied the singer’s claims that she had also been raped by Luke . Documents that were unsealed that same week revealed that Lady Gaga provided emotional support to Kesha as she grappled with the decision to go public with her allegations. Gaga’s testimony was made public this week, and while the singer says she was never assaulted by Luke, her sympathy for her fellow abuse survivor is obvious. Before she began her testimony, Gaga’s lawyer revealed that whole episode “has proved to be a trigger event” for her. “[S]he has experienced in the past few hours some PTSD reactions which is causing some trauma and emotional reactivity,” he said. “So she is crying now the record will reflect.” From there, Gaga recounted meeting with Kesha not long after Luke’s alleged attack. “What we discussed was what I recall was her immense sadness and depression and fear,” Gaga recalled. “She was visibly very different than when I had seen her before, and — but I can’t say specifically what exactly we spoke about. I just recall that it was emotional, and I wanted to be there for her.” Gaga went on to reveal what Kesha later told her about the assault. “She told me that he used power and manipulation in some fashion or some type of verbiage,” Gaga recalled. “I am not repeating exactly the words that came out of her mouth, but that he used power and manipulation to control her, and that she had been given a happy pill, that he offered her something and that she took it, and that she woke up and didn’t remember, and that’s what she told me.” Asked if she felt that Kesha’s claims would damage Luke’s reputation, Gaga aptly pointed out that there are bigger things at stake here than one man’s reputation: “Reputation, if you are asking about his reputation in the world, I don’t feel at liberty to speak for the entire world,” the singer stated. “So if you are asking what my view is of his reputation, I made my view of him and his reputation when I saw her in that back room. That was an image that — of something that happened to me, and I felt and knew in my heart that she was telling the truth, and I believe her.” Asked why Kesha would come forward after initially remaining quiet about the alleged assault, Gaga became irate: “And when this happens in this industry, it is kept extremely secret, and it is compounded by contracts and manipulative power scenarios that actually include this very situation that we are all in right now,” she told the court. “Why on earth would this girl tell the entire world that this happened? Why on earth? Do you know what it’s like for survivors? Do you know what it’s like to tell people? “Don’t you roll your eyes at me,” she told an attorney for Luke. “You should be ashamed of yourself.” The outcome of Kesha and Luke’s competing lawsuits remains to be seen, but whatever the case, Gaga in many others have made it clear that they will no longer be intimidated into silence by powerful men.
